The Complete Idiot's Guide to Movies, Flicks, and Films ReviewA great introduction to the entire world of film -- not just Hollywood, but a host of world cinemas from European to Latin American to African and Near Eastern. The examples used are well explained and are always pertinent to the points at hand. My favorite chapters were one on film theory (which made obscure concepts accessible to the beginner) and one that used all the concepts introduced in the book to explain the German silent film "Nosferatu." I had just seen the new movie "Shadow of the Vampire," which is based on the making of "Nosferatu"; this book made me understand for the first time what a complex piece of art that early movie is. I highly recommend this book as an affordable intro to film criticism that, while accessible and fun to read, does not talk down to its audience.The Complete Idiot's Guide to Movies, Flicks, and Films OverviewIf you love movies, this entertaining, user-friendly manual offers you a selective guide for finding what you like and for discovering films that are new to you, from 1920s French films to classic Westerns. It covers Hollywoods entire hundred-year history and explains film genre and terminology.

Making the Transformational Moment in Film: Unleashing the Power of the Image (with the films of Vincent Ward) ReviewI'm probably Vincent Ward's biggest fan. At least I've never met a bigger fan. I have all his movies (including his student films) and all the memorabilia for all of this movies (posters, press kits, etc.)
Boy, was I looking forward to this book, as there currently exist, as far as I know, no books about Vincent Ward, other than the one he wrote himself: Edge of the earth: Stories and images from the antipodes.
I was hoping for a lot of inside information on Ward's life, his philosophy, and the circumstances behind many of his films.
There is some of that, but for the most part this book is not really about Vincent Ward's films as a whole. It's a film book, written for film students and directors. It lays out the cinematography of certain scenes and how they handle emotional progression, etc. The author also has a thesis (think of the title): that the films of Vincent Ward can be profitably studied for how they handle filmic moments where there is a turnaround, something the author opines that Ward handles well.
Maybe so, but this isn't what I was interested in. It's a lot of technical talk. What I was looking for was more of an appreciation of Ward's life and his films, and the story behind that. As I say, there was precious little of that, and quite a lot of pretentious theorizing about visual theory.Making the Transformational Moment in Film: Unleashing the Power of the Image (with the films of Vincent Ward) OverviewThis book is a bold exploration that gets under the skin of the filmmaking process and shows how audiences can be moved through deeply transformational uses of the medium. You'll learn how the raw materials of filmmaking are brought together so that the transformation happens. Key moments in films from Vincent Ward and others are used as examples, examining how the moment is staged, how visual composition is used, how narrative is constructed, how color, light and music are brought together, and how to get inside characters that we really care about. Roger Ebert describes Vincent Ward as a "true visionary." Here, the sources of Ward's filmmaking vision are revealed, offering a unique view of the creative process in film.

Creative Filmmaking from the Inside Out: Five Keys to the Art of Making Inspired Movies and Television ReviewThis book is a hybrid of interview collections and workbook exercises, designed to help filmmakers with their creative processes, not using the dumbed-down how-to-manual approach that so many filmmaking books employ, but in an intelligent and subtle way that engages and challenges the reader. These authors have assembled a formidable list of filmmakers -- the brains and souls behind The English Patient, Toy Story, E.R., Boys Don't Cry, many more -- and asked them more than the usual-suspect kind of questions, and by doing so have managed to go deeply into the creative process. The book interweaves the interviews with anecdotes, proverbs, and a group of creativity exercises which are several levels above the kind of artists' self-help books that have sometimes insulted our intelligence in the past. Ever wonder how Anthony Minghella thought of the opening shot for The English Patient? Or how Merchant Ivory get those stellar casts? This book actually tells you things you want to know, and then challenges you to go out and make a movie.Creative Filmmaking from the Inside Out: Five Keys to the Art of Making Inspired Movies and Television OverviewFive keys to creating authentic, distinctive work, whether you are a student, professional or simply love making films on your own For Creative Filmmaking from the Inside Out, three professors at the renowned University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television interviewed fifteen outstanding filmmakers, then distilled their insights into the "Five I's" of creativity. Learn how to: • Uncover your unique creative voice (Introspection) • Work from real-life observations and experience (Inquiry) • Draw on your nonconscious wells of creativity (Intuition) • Strengthen your creative collaborations (Interaction) • Communicate at the deepest level with your audience (Impact) This comprehensive approach provides practical exercises that will enrich and transform your work, whether you are looking for a story idea, lighting a set, editing a scene or selecting a music cue. The participating filmmakers, who have collectively won or been nominated for 39 Oscars and 27 Emmys, are: Anthony Minghella, writer-director (The English Patient); Kimberly Peirce, writer-director (Boys Don't Cry); John Lasseter, writer-director-producer (Toy Story); John Wells, writer-producer (ER); Hanif Kureishi, writer (My Beautiful Laundrette); Pamela Douglas, writer (Between Mother and Daughter); Renee Tajima-PeÑa, director-producer (My America...or, Honk If You Love Buddha); Ismail Merchant, producer (The Remains of the Day); Jeannine Oppewall, production designer (L.A. Confidential); Conrad L. Hall, cinematographer (American Beauty); Kathy Baker, actor (Picket Fences); Walter Murch, sound designer-editor (Apocalypse Now); Lisa Fruchtman, editor (The Right Stuff); Kate Amend, editor (Into the Arms of Strangers); and James Newton Howard, composer (The Sixth Sense).

Raindance Producers' Lab Lo-To-No Budget Filmmaking ReviewThe book touched on all the challenges of indie filmmaking in a clear and concise way. He discussed what areas you should focus on and what areas you can spend less money and time while still getting a great film as your final product. Elliott explored the psyche of the indie filmmaker too by bringing his own easy to understand explanations of why things work the way they do.
His anecdotes really help explain why things work the way they do on low budget productions. He is gifted at giving you insights into the small things you can change that show big improvements on camera. This book eases your mind about not having enough money to make your film. And hopefully give you the courage to put your film out there.
I recommend that any filmmaker who has little or no money buy this book. With Elliot's expertise, you can gain value insights into telling the story that you want.

Indie Producers Handbook : Creative Producing From A to Z ReviewI bought this book because it had cool art work and boy was I surprised. I was a student at NYU Tish School of the Arts majoring in Film Producing and this book taught me more about producing than the years I spent at NYU. I read the book from cover to cover in one sitting and then I decided that I would re-read a little each night before going to sleep. So I keep it at my bedside. Every night I learn more and more about the creative side of producing...and discovering that it is as much an art form as directing or writing. This book has really opened my eyes. I don't know who Myrl Schreibman is except that he is on the faculty of UCLA but I wish I had taken courses from him if he is anything like his book. This is a book that I will refer to alot. ThanksIndie Producers Handbook : Creative Producing From A to Z OverviewMyrl Schreibman has written a straighfoward, insightful, and articulate account of what it takes to make a successful feature film.

Archival Storytelling: A Filmmaker's Guide to Finding, Using, and Licensing Third-Party Visuals and Music ReviewThis book is an essential edition to any filmmaker's library. It is both a guide and a reference work. It offers listings of many archival sources that allow for access to and affordable use of all kinds of images and music. It offers a primer on copyright, covering relevant issues related to archival use such as public domain content, internet licensing, moral rights, most-favored-nations clauses, music synchronization and master use licenses, and fair use. It also covers frustrating and sticky issues that arise when acquiring materials such as inability to gain access to public domain content.
It engages the reader in an exploration that works for any of the creative arts--a discussion of ethical issues related to the use of other's content in a manner that is true to its original meaning, mission, context, and purpose.
And the book presents an inside/out perspective of the business of filmmaking and the complexities of its intellectual property issues. The authors accomplish this perspective through the use of interviews and roundtable discussions with well-established filmmakers, archivists, film researchers, insurance executives, and supervisors and managers of rights in the music industry. The work also contains a thought-provoking commentary on what copyright has become and of what it should be and why. This discussion impels filmmakers to actively engage in the current dialogue about a concept of copyright that would both protect their own and others' creations, secure current access to archival materials, and increase the amount of archival content that is accessible in the future.
Archival Storytelling: A Filmmaker's Guide to Finding, Using, and Licensing Third-Party Visuals and Music Overview
Archival Storytelling is an essential, pragmatic guide to one of the most challenging issues facing filmmakers today: the use of images and music that belong to someone else. Where do producers go for affordable stills and footage? How do filmmakers evaluate the historical value of archival materials? What do verite' producers need to know when documenting a world filled with rights-protected images and sounds? How do filmmakers protect their own creative efforts from infringement?

Filled with advice and insight from filmmakers, archivists, film researchers, music supervisors, intellectual property experts, insurance executives and others, Archival Storytelling defines key terms-copyright, fair use, public domain, orphan works and more-and challenges filmmakers to become not only archival users but also archival and copyright activists, ensuring their ongoing ability as creators to draw on the cultural materials that surround them.

Features conversations with industry leaders including Patricia Aufderheide, Hubert Best, Peter Jaszi, Jan Krawitz, Lawrence Lessig, Stanley Nelson, Rick Prelinger, Geoffrey C. Ward and many others.

Additional praise for Archival Storytelling: "I've been making historical documentaries for many years, yet I learned new things from this book. This is the definitive guide for archival research for documentary filmmakers. An invaluable resource." -Mark Jonathan Harris, Distinguished Professor, School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California, and writer/director, The Long Way Home and Into the Arms of Strangers

"One of the best-and most needed-[books] I have seen in a while..The challenge is to keep what is a fairly technical aspect of filmmaking interesting without compromising the quality and depth of information. The authors have done an exceptional job in this regard by the careful interweaving of interviews with researchers, filmmakers and legal experts through the factual material.There is the strong sense of being in the presence of experienced filmmakers and researchers who accept that while there are standard practices, archival use and intellectual property laws etc. are contingent fields in which each case must be assessed and dealt with on its merits." -Bruce Sheridan, Chair, Film & Video Department, Columbia College

"It's hard to imagine a more organized, comprehensive dissection of Byzantine material. The authors have produced a tremendous guide for all who use archival resources. Best of all, because of their effort, I believe more individuals will be able to access and properly utilize such material. This book will serve filmmakers and, in turn, the public for years to come." -Thomas Speicher, Producer, Pennsylvania College of Technology

"Not simply a 'how-to' manual, it is also a discussion of ideas, issues and history that creates an enjoyable text even when the subject matter becomes complicated.The real world examples, the roundtable discussions, and the exploration of ideas and issues surrounding the technical aspects are very welcome and well done." -Dustin Ogdin, Filmmaker, Spoke Digital Films

"The book properly advances the notion that 'films matter,' but this is countered by discussants with 'films cost money too.' Filmmakers may take decades to recoup, and licensing helps. It's an ongoing volley, the chapter engenders a road map through the split, the tension makes a good read...This authorative book belongs on every producer's shelf." -Loren S. Miller, Freelance Documentary and Dramatic Editor, Emerson College

* Nearly all filmmakers, at some point in their careers, will want to use third-party materials, or will be asked to license their own work to someone else. This book will show you how to do it (and stay on-time and within budget)* This book, by clarifying and defining such terms as fair use, copyright, intellectual property, and Creative Commons, can better prepare media makers to not only protect their own creative rights but to understand and respect those of others.* Additional resources are available on the authors' website: http://www.archivalstorytelling.com

Hello, He Lied -- and Other Tales from the Hollywood Trenches ReviewWhile Lynda Obst certainly knows her way around Hollywood and has survived and even prospered in an arena where megalomaniacs, narcissists and pathological liars abound and indeed make the rules, her book is most useful in describing why good business makes for lousy art. Obst again proves the observation that 'Hollywood is high school with money'. Ambitious and driven (and obviously intelligent) though Obst may be, the deal-making she painstakingly describes is the art form, the pictures themselves mere adjuncts. Shopping witless scripts to a tiny group of hugely overpaid stars and directors insures a steady stream of 'product' and little beyond the most common entertainment and certainly rarely anything approaching art. Sheer persistence overcomes all. A project moves forward only when the right people are 'attached'. Risky, personal pictures do not fit into this equation and subsequently rarely get produced. Instead the motion picture audience receives a steady stream of generic diversions, soulless to the extreme, dull, predictable and adolescent, near perfect reflections of their creators.Hello, He Lied -- and Other Tales from the Hollywood Trenches Overview

I'll Be in My Trailer: The Creative Wars Between Directors and Actors ReviewActors... can't live with them, can't fire them. Of course, actors are very special people. And of course, the main key to dealing with them is communication. However, finding the RIGHT way to communicate is often very difficult, because the way a director, writer or a producer thinks is very different from how the mind of an actor sees the creative process. (they also differ greatly from each other, but that's a whole different ballgame)
John Badham, director of some huge hits (Saturday Night Fever, Stakeout, War Games) tries to build bridges in this book, even though the title leads one to believe the tone will be fairly belligerent. On the contrary, while there are some stories about extremely bad behaviour here, Badham is being very constructive. In many cases, he puts the blame for an incident squarely on his own shoulders, even when an objective observer would think he did nothing wrong. His main goal is to facilitate the communication between director and actor, by explaining how to give direction in a way that actors can actually use. Badham himself uses the `as if'-technique (i.e. play this scene as if you got to catch the last train) to put actors in the right frame of mind. However, this approach isn't right for everyone (some actors DO want result-oriented direction), and Badham duly notes alternative approaches.
The book also provides a ton of helpful hints for almost all of the problems that can crop up on a set, acting-wise and actor-wise. When dealing with an addict, the only option is tough love. When some actors misbehave just for the fun of it or to flaunt their own power, a swift and just retribution is in order - except when you're dealing with real stars, who are beyond anyone's power to control.
The book also contains lots of interviews with actors, directors and producers who provide insights from all sides of the `war'. There's a lot of on-set anecdotes about Travolta (Saturday Night Fever) and Richard Dreyfuss, among others, and the interviewees include both huge stars, television directors, well-known actors who never made it to the A-list, and producers. The book is completely succesful at what it sets out to do, though of course the problems will remain. But now at least, there's some real help out there for directors struggling to get their cast under control.I'll Be in My Trailer: The Creative Wars Between Directors and Actors OverviewBeneath the entertaining and instructive war stories lies the truth: how directors elicit the best performances from difficult and terrified actors. You'll learn how to use proven techniques to get actors to give their best performances - including the ten best and ten worst things to say - and what you can do when an actor won't or can't do what the director wants. Includes never before published stories from veteran director, John Badham, as well as Sydney Pollock, Mel Gibson, James Woods, Michael Mann and many more.

The Art of Film Funding: Alternative Financing Concepts ReviewI bought this book eager to learn some of the "alternative" financing concepts based on the glowing reviews. I'm about to mount a low budget feature, and I thought the book might provide good info on investment schemes and methods of raising money and other non-monetary support for a fictional project. However, this book is aimed at the non-profit and/or documentary filmmaker with only cursory references to fictional feature (or short) projects. I really learned nothing new from this title and I feel the description here is misleading. I suggest those of you looking for insight on funding for-profit films look elsewhere. If you are wanting to shoot a documentary then this book could be very helpful. My two cents worth.The Art of Film Funding: Alternative Financing Concepts OverviewThis book is your reference guide for creating the perfect pitch, inspiring your winning application, finding and connecting with funding organizations, making a successful "ask," and landing the money to make your film.

Where Did I Go Right: You're No One in Hollywood Unless Someone Wants You Dead ReviewFor those of us hooked on "The E True Hollywood Story," "VH1's Behind The Music" and other outlets for real life Hollywood dish, Bernie Brillstein's book is a wonderful treat. This is a candid, honest look at a half-century long career in the trenches. Bernie Brillstein nurtured the careers of Lorne Michaels,Jim Henson, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, and many more icons. Besides the wonderful stories (ok, dish) about his clients, Brillstein shares behind the scenes anecdotes from the deal making trenches. Great insights for any future Hollywood agents/managers. But even if you don't work in this town, you will love Bernie's story and possibly pick up some useful life lessons. An appealing, infinitely readable Hollywood read, and if you like this, check out books by Bob Evans and Ken Kragen!Where Did I Go Right: You're No One in Hollywood Unless Someone Wants You Dead Overview

So You Want to Be a Producer ReviewI'm not a producer. I'm a graphic designer. And from what I can tell from Mr. Turman's book, there are a lot of parallels between the two. In fact, that's why I bought the book in the first place: I suddenly found my creative-self undergoing mitosis, and generating a business counter-part. That's the part that doesn't just create a job, but has to sell and manage it. During my frustrations with having gone from "Designer" to "Orchestrator" a friend of mine told me that I was becoming more a less a "Producer." Around the time he said that, I was feeling more like worn-out ready to discard product than a producer.
And then I came across this book, and the title matched perfectly with the mood. Sort of. The author still loves what he does for a living. He's a masochist.
I got exactly what I wanted from this book: That is, a big reality check. Turman is probably dealing with the largest ego's the world will ever know - Cinema Artisans. Artists, when unfulfilled and unappreciated, are insecure. Invert that whole scenario and that insecurity turns into something that only a Producer or agent will tolerate. And when I read Turman's descriptions about many of the off-stage *characters* he's had to juggle, suddenly my life and work didn't seem so bad after all. Of course, I know jack about Producing a movie. But that's not the point. This book essentially illustrates how any type of "producing", places that person at the very center of a massive crowd that will undoubtedly span the gamut of personalities - all of which have to be juggled if the job is to be finished. Turman warns that it is not a job for the faint of heart.
And he covers every topic from what I can see. Like *collaboration*. A word that makes me laugh everytime I hear it. Because Turman's right: collabo projects are like a marriage where it is very rarely between equals. And sure, we may have known this already before opening the book, but I'll be damned if it doesn't feel good to hear someone else say it. And I can certainly relate to the collabo's he's outlined here.
And maybe that's the best part about this book: commiseration. Again, obviously I can't relate to working with a celebrity. But I can relate to working with artists and all the stubborn insecurities that come with that. Or the ugly competition. Or thedivine posturing. And sometimes you actually like the SOB's, but they drive you insane.
There's a nostalgic value to the book that softens and seperates it from the suited-up shark value it could have had. For instance, Turman seems to have a healthy understanding of the balance between art and commerce - a balance that virtually defines Graphic Design. A self-indulgent artist will probably create a brilliant yet alienating piece of art with questionable marketing potential. Marketing types consider themselves the remedy for that. And yet now, as Turman illustrates, the scales have tipped to the other side with the marketing mavens taking over and pushing so far to the other side of commerce that movies are no longer stories but products to be consumed, discarded and forgotten. The best movies are stories that are remembered - and even quoted the way some quote Shakespeare. Ideally, you want to balance the scales so that both ambitions have their time in the sun. I'm too young to ever know if such a time existed. It sounds like maybe this time did exist during Turman's era, when he produced the movies he talks about in this book. But those days seem to have faded.
While there may not be a lot to like about being a producer, there's still a lot to love about this book. Another book like this should be written with a dozen producers talking about their jobs, their movies and the stories that go with them. But have mercy on the poor soul knighted with the task of producing such a book.So You Want to Be a Producer OverviewFew jobs in Hollywood are as shrouded in mystery as the role of the producer. What does it take to be a producer, how does one get started, and what on earth does one actually do? In So You Want to Be a Producer Lawrence Turman, the producer of more than forty films, including The Graduate, The River Wild, Short Circuit, and American History X, and Endowed Chair of the famed Peter Stark Producing Program at the University of Southern California, answers these questions and many more.Examining all the nuts and bolts of production, such as raising money and securing permissions, finding a story and developing a script, choosing a director, hiring actors, and marketing your project, So You Want to Be a Producer is a must-have resource packed with insider information and first-hand advice from top Hollywood producers, writers, and directors, offering invaluable help for beginners and professionals alike. Directors Tell the Story: Master the Craft of Television and Film Directing ReviewThere are quite literally no other books like this one. Most of the other "Directing" books out there are either "Interview" books or "Indie Filmmaker" books, or even "Film Theory" books more suitable to a classroom. As such, there are very few "How-To" and/or "Tell it Like it Is" books by written by WORKING PROFESSIONAL DIRECTORS. And why not? They're *working*; they have no time to write books!
So these Authors have Authority-- now how about their Approach? Leveraging their decades in the Industry, the Authors lay it all out step-by-step:
- Prep: Break-down, Casting, Design, Blocking, Scouting, etc
- Shoot: Directing, Running the Set
- Post: Working with Editors & Post Supe's
- Being a Director: The Demands of the Job, & Getting Started
And it's all from the standpoint of How-To: comparing practical ideas, issues, tips/tricks, etc between Network, multi-camera, single-camera, MOV, and even some 'Feature Film' perspectives. We're not talking (just) "where to put the camera"; we're talking "how to shoot half a feature in eight, sometimes seven days", because "TV is low-budget filmmaking".
But know what's even *better* than all that? Here's my favorite parts:
- Job Requirements for being a Storyteller
- Being a Leader/Leadership qualities of a Director
- Six Steps to Problem Solving
- Suggestions for Dealing with stress
- The Business of the Business
This is the Real Stuff-- as anyone who's spent time on a hot set, herding cats, unsnarling Gordian knots & chasing the sun will tell you...
I particularly appreciate their encouraging, practical, keep-your-eyes-on-the-ball approach to the field of Hollywood filmmaking. They not only share a ton of hard-won advice, they also leverage their massive list of highly-skilled, well-known Director friends, and persuade them to share *their* hard-won advice too!! Bonus!!
And I really love their tongue-in-cheek tone: Who else would (dare) publish a 'real-world' vocab list, & include the definition of a "Two-T" shot? :-D
Highly Recommended.Directors Tell the Story: Master the Craft of Television and Film Directing Overview

Filmmaking For Dummies ReviewI read this book, as well as others, because I'm taking a stab at filming a screenplay with some other people. I have enjoyed some of the other dummies books, but I thought this one was off target. It is very high level. For example, in the first or second chapter, he goes over what the job roles are for the production assistant, and ten other job titles you might see at the end of a Hollywood movie, and I'm thinking to myself, am I really going to have a full-time grip on my movie? I was hoping this book would focus on the nuts and bolts of making a small-budget / zero-budget film, but it talked about numbers that apply to people who aren't going to be reading a dummies book. On the whole, I thought it was a real surface look at independent filmmaking, and would be appropriate for someone who wanted to learn about it, but not do it. You would be better off buying IFILM Filmmakers Handbook and some individual books on lighting and sound if you really want information about how to make your own film. A lot of the information in this book can be found on the web, also.Filmmaking For Dummies OverviewNow updated--the step-by-step secrets to capturing great moments on film

The Green Screen Handbook: Real-World Production Techniques ReviewUsually I'm not an impulse buyer, but this time around I jumped at the opportunity when this book became available. I'm a green-screen amateur by comparison to the author. But this book doesn't overwhelm me with a lot of "technobabble" I have no hope of understanding or using. It's a very user friendly presentation of tips and techniques as well as things to watch out for when producing your own green screen extravaganzas.
There's a nice quality and feel to the book; that sense of durability that lends itself to being able to hold up with a lot of page turns and abuse without falling apart at the seams. There's plenty of pictures and advise. I like it when an author goes out of their way to show as well as to tell. Pictures go a long way to explain what words don't otherwise convey. And when I can see an example of something in action, I'm quick to pick up the technique as my own.
The included DVD has a wealth of video clips and Adobe After Effects project files that goes along with each chapter. You get Quicktime movies, Adobe Photoshop files and more. Gosh there are over 2 gigs worth of HD video footage enough to do some healthy and author encouraged reverse-engineering of project files to better understand how each process fits together and works in producing a quality piece of work in the end. Files are PC or Mac compatible. And everything is written with Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4 in mind.
For me, the quality of the content of this book vastly surpasses the cost and that's value enough to justify my investment. Besides, anything I can learn or what helps me to learn how to be better at what I do is priceless.
Well done!

Cinematography: Theory and Practice, Second Edition: Image Making for Cinematographers and Directors ReviewBlain Brown's text has become invaluable to me as an instructor of film studies. While my discipline is generally interested in examining the results of great cinema, I find so few of us understand how these iconic moments are created. So, Brown's efforts not only guide potential cinematographers, but they are equally as valuable to the scholar.
To exemplify his points, Brown draws on some student favorites such as Fight Club, Kill Bill, Blade Runner, and Rain Man. Nonetheless, the author also includes some older/more obscure films which are sure to delight cinephiles: 2001, City of Lost Children, The Fall, Apocalypse Now, Blade Runner, and Citizen Kane. These examples are large, colorful, and deftly underscore Brown's points. In fact, even the examples that are specifically constructed for this text are quite lovely (and that is never the case!) Kudos to the author for making a genuinely engaging text.
Brown devotes much needed attention to lighting (from simple to sublime). Likewise, he thoroughly addresses color, camera movement, and exposure. Personally, I really enjoyed the focus on obvious-but-oft-overlooked aspects of film. For instance, I frequently have to scour new texts for a solid entry on breaking-the-fourth-wall. So, I enjoyed Brown's example of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Certainly, he could have selected a number of "serious" instances, but this film is one of the most memorable examples. It really worked! Brown's lack of pretension is showcased in this moment. He discusses all manner of film: mainstream, classic, art-house, and indie. Very smart and very appreciated, indeed.
Brown's text is lovely to peruse and amazing to read cover-to-cover. Make this a new addition to your professional library. You will not regret it!

Mastering MultiCamera Techniques: From Preproduction to Editing and Deliverables ReviewThis book, MASTERING MULTICAMERA TECHNIQUES, is a thoroughly comprehensive look at cinematography and the digital editing process. This is NOT one of those cheesy how-to-lighting books that seems to be given away with every camera ever made. No! This is cameramen and camerawomen taking you within inches of performers, like Paul McCartney and Elton John, in a live concert setting. This is backstage where gaffers and technicians set up their equipment and do sound check while engineers in the editing room monitor multiple camera angles over David Letterman's studio soundstage. This is part text-book, part insider's information, part university course for interested persons who'd like to work behind the scenes in film, theatre, television or perhaps to have the practical information on creating her/his own production company.
This really is a phenomenal book.
It is essentially a marriage between two departments: the audio/visual and the digital editing departments. Everything that you need, think you need and things you probably wouldn't have thought about are discussed here.
Preproduction. The author, Mitch Jacobson, discusses topics ranging from organizing personnel, the kinds of recording equipment, archiving to post-production facilities and costs.
Production. Types of multi-camera productions, setting up in various venues, studios and stadiums. The logistics of setting up equipment. "On Shoot Day," he discusses the floor plans from what tools to use to power the equipment, the location of the crew, to the art of "camera matching." Beautiful photographs show how various camera angles are fed and synched to the editing room where we see how the production of the David Letterman show is carried out.
* Timecode and Synch Methods
* Computers and Editing Codecs
* Nonlinear Editing Software programs--Apple, Avid, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas and Grass Valley's Edius. (Edius...didn't see that coming!)
* Preparing the Project For Editing.
* Grouping and Synching Angles.
* Cutting Techniques and Styles
* Cutting Music and editing with multiple performances
* Sitcoms and Comedy
* The Main Event
* Deliverables/ Conforming the Master Tape/ Reloading/ Color Correction
* Audio in Post-Production
* Lighting
* Case Studies, including the Paul McCartney event.
Most of the 17 Focal Press titles I own are either above average or excellent. A few are so well done that they necessitate purchase because you will find someone, whether yourself or someone who wants to get into the industry and you know that such a publication would be invaluable. So you buy it to support the author for a job well done and you, perhaps, pay-it-forward as a gift to a deserving individual or institution. If you feel this way, then along with Directing the Documentary, Fifth Edition, How to Make Animated Films: Tony White's Complete Masterclass on the Traditional Principals of Animation and The Complete Film Production Handbook, Fourth Edition ...
MASTERING MULTICAMERA TECHNIQUES should be at the top of your list.
Beyond 5 stars.
