3-D Movies: A History and Filmography of Stereoscopic Cinema (McFarland classics) ReviewThe first part of this book covers the historic aspects of Stereoscopic film making and is well written and interesting but the majority of the book is a reference guide to 3D movies. It is a great reference guide for anyone interested in 3D movies but it is not the greated book if you are looking for an in depth historical look at this genre. If you are a true 3D movie fan, this book is an indespensable reference.3-D Movies: A History and Filmography of Stereoscopic Cinema (McFarland classics) Overview

John Ford: Hollywood's Old Master (Oklahoma Western Biographies) ReviewIf you've never read a Ford bio, this is a decent introduction. But the book has three problems. It has very little interpretation and evaluation of the films. Much of the book is about Ford's flaws as a human being, especially his cruelty to the people he worked with. Film by film, he piles up examples of Ford's bad behavior without explaining what all this nastiness has to do with Ford's achievement as an artist. Finally, much of the book's material comes from interviews. In a bibliographical essay, Davis lists all this material. In the text, however, he never makes it clear where he got a particular quote. Davis did quite a few interviews for the book. Those don't need further citation. If you want to track down quotations from other interviews, however, forget it. There's no way of finding out when an interview was given or what the context for the quote is.John Ford: Hollywood's Old Master (Oklahoma Western Biographies) Overview

WHO NEEDS HOLLYWOOD: The Amazing Story of a Small Time Filmmaker who Writes the Screenplay, Raises the Production Budget, Directs, and Distributes the #3 Movie of the Year ReviewThe inspiring story of Joe Camp's life and the events that led to producing Benji despite so much discouragement from others and so few resources provides insight into how to make a movie while sticking true to Camp's philosophy of always telling an emotionally engaging story. Looking back on his life, Camp views the failures and coincidences as positive things that led him to Benji. Much of his success relies on his attitude- he overcomes many obstacles every step of the way from selling people on the idea to distributing the film himself through persistence and the willingness to get his hands dirty, the gumption to do it himself and the courage to stick to what he believes to be the right idea even if it defies convention.
"Life is but a series of choices... your dreams can become reality by making the right choices and sticking with them: the choice of following your passion at all cost: the choice of persistence, of never giving up, because you can never fail unless you quit... turn your back on the naysayers. You are the driver of your destiny. Only you can accept the challenge and make your life extraordinary."
I recommend this book to people who loved Benji, are interested in film making, or want a motivational tale about really executing on your dreams.WHO NEEDS HOLLYWOOD: The Amazing Story of a Small Time Filmmaker who Writes the Screenplay, Raises the Production Budget, Directs, and Distributes the #3 Movie of the Year OverviewWho Needs Hollywood is an incredible story of slammed doors, rejection, ridicule, and ultimately a tenacity that brought home to Joe Camp the #3 movie of the year, with no help whatsoever from Hollywood. Author of the recent National Best Seller The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd, Camp believes that anything is possible if you work hard enough and have faith in yourself. He was told by industry "experts" not to bother with his first film; that it wouldn't work. He proved the experts wrong and now, after an award-winning career in movies and television, he's at it again with a brand new career as an author. His best seller The Soul of a Horse is in its seventh printing and is changing the lives of horses all across the planet for the better. With this new book he hopes to do the same for people. Camp has written, produced and directed seven theatrical motion pictures cumulatively grossing well over the equivalent of $600 million in today's dollars, making him one of the most successful independent filmmakers of all time. His new book, Who Needs Hollywood, is an inspiring insight into how to make things happen, against all odds, and confirmation that every dream is, in fact, possible.

Pre-Production Planning for Video, Film, and Multimedia ReviewMr. Cartwright's book is a excellent teaching text for high school or college students studying video and multimedia production. It does a great job of taking the beginner through all of the steps needed to ensure a successful production.
However, one can't help overlook that a text written four years ago on this subject is LONG overdue for a new edition.
Many software applications that are referred to as "soon to be released" are now in their 3rd or 4th version. Likewise, the hardware section of the book is terribly behind the times, as their is virtually no mention of digital video cameras, digital capture cards, current generation non-linear editing systems, or DVD.
Also disappointing was the 3.5" disc that's included, which contains all of the forms in the book. The disc is specially formatted so that it cannot be read on a Macintosh-which CAN read any commonly formatted PC diskette! Instead the publisher encourages Mac users to send in the PC disk and receive a Mac disk at no charge. Why not just use the standard 1.4mb formatting for a PC disk and let users of either platform access the material? Or better yet, just put the forms on a hybrid CD-ROM. This is especially irksome to Mac devotees, when practically all of the computers pictured in the book doing video editing are Macs!
Yet, despite its need for a new edition to address the latest and greatest in hardware and software, and its platform specific floppy, Pre-Production and Planning for Video, Film and Multimedia will serve as a valuable resource for those new to the pre and post production arena, as much of the planning and organizational approaches in the text never go out of style!Pre-Production Planning for Video, Film, and Multimedia OverviewThe key to a project's ultimate success is good planning. This unique new book shows how to prepare for the myriad of steps required to execute production and post production of a video, film or multimedia project.Cartwright explains in detail how to save money and time in production and post-production, yet produce a quality program with high production values. The craft of production planning is explained through a comprehensive system. The production steps are all there, enhanced with graphs of the production process, production forms, photos and a comprehensive list of production resources along with a chapter devoted to the use of computers for the production and post-production process. The techniques of planning for success are easily applied to both traditional linear program development to interactive multimedia development for all types of programs, including communications, training, marketing, corporate news and teleconferencing.Pre-Production Planning for Video, Film and Multimedia also includes 30 planning, production and post-production forms that can be accessed on an accompanying complimentary disk (for both IBM compatibles or Mac).Steve R. Cartwright is president of Cartwright & Associates, a training and communications company, and co-owner of the Motion Graphics Company, a computer graphics and animation firm.A leading producer, consultant and instructor, Cartwright is author of Training with Video and Secrets of Successful Video Programs.A comprehensive system for pre-production planning for video, film and multimedia.Includes a detailed description of the production and post-production processes.A disk with useful forms is also included.

Naked Filmmaking: How To Make A Feature-Length Film - Without A Crew - For $10,000 Or Less ReviewMike Carroll opens his book with a confession when he tells us he wants people to buy the book. He wants people to read the book. He has titled it "Naked Filmmaking" with full awareness that the onlooker will be drawn to it since sex controlled America is lured to perversions like a movement in the peripheral. He's an artist with a grasp on the reality of this ever expanding world of technology (the digital age)and holds no illusions in the possibility of being left behind (perhaps his largest fear?). Carroll chapters his book with layers of straight talk, not of the failed outsider but the active explorer who is eager to share his knowledge. One is inspired to take on the task because Carroll makes it seem possible (and it is!), all the while jabbing the low tech thinkers and non-creative hacks with unsettling reality. This book is what got me through the making of my film and I can say, without shame, it stands as the best book on one-man filmmaking (true independence) since "Rebel Without a Crew" by Robert Rodriguez.

I'll Be in My Trailer: The Creative Wars Between Directors and Actors ReviewActors... can't live with them, can't fire them. Of course, actors are very special people. And of course, the main key to dealing with them is communication. However, finding the RIGHT way to communicate is often very difficult, because the way a director, writer or a producer thinks is very different from how the mind of an actor sees the creative process. (they also differ greatly from each other, but that's a whole different ballgame)
John Badham, director of some huge hits (Saturday Night Fever, Stakeout, War Games) tries to build bridges in this book, even though the title leads one to believe the tone will be fairly belligerent. On the contrary, while there are some stories about extremely bad behaviour here, Badham is being very constructive. In many cases, he puts the blame for an incident squarely on his own shoulders, even when an objective observer would think he did nothing wrong. His main goal is to facilitate the communication between director and actor, by explaining how to give direction in a way that actors can actually use. Badham himself uses the `as if'-technique (i.e. play this scene as if you got to catch the last train) to put actors in the right frame of mind. However, this approach isn't right for everyone (some actors DO want result-oriented direction), and Badham duly notes alternative approaches.
The book also provides a ton of helpful hints for almost all of the problems that can crop up on a set, acting-wise and actor-wise. When dealing with an addict, the only option is tough love. When some actors misbehave just for the fun of it or to flaunt their own power, a swift and just retribution is in order - except when you're dealing with real stars, who are beyond anyone's power to control.
The book also contains lots of interviews with actors, directors and producers who provide insights from all sides of the `war'. There's a lot of on-set anecdotes about Travolta (Saturday Night Fever) and Richard Dreyfuss, among others, and the interviewees include both huge stars, television directors, well-known actors who never made it to the A-list, and producers. The book is completely succesful at what it sets out to do, though of course the problems will remain. But now at least, there's some real help out there for directors struggling to get their cast under control.I'll Be in My Trailer: The Creative Wars Between Directors and Actors OverviewBeneath the entertaining and instructive war stories lies the truth: how directors elicit the best performances from difficult and terrified actors. You'll learn how to use proven techniques to get actors to give their best performances - including the ten best and ten worst things to say - and what you can do when an actor won't or can't do what the director wants. Includes never before published stories from veteran director, John Badham, as well as Sydney Pollock, Mel Gibson, James Woods, Michael Mann and many more.
