Independent Film Distribution: How to Make a Successful End Run Around the Big Guys ReviewIt is always a bitter pill to swallow when I tell my students that after all their hard work, time, energy and passion that they will eventually end up with a product. It is not necessarily a bad thing for them to realize that, once they are done writing their screenplay, they have to treat it like it is the newest product out on the market. And, yes, they have to market it. To market it, they have to distribute it.
The book "INDEPENDENT FILM DISTRIBUTION" does a great job getting to the core of what this journey entails. With a mix of interviews and commentary, Phil Hall, explores this process from the ground up. He delves into the roots of Independent Film and then shows how those roots have grown into the apple tree of today.
What is "Independent Film?" Well, it depends on who you ask. Phil Hall explores that question and then takes it further into: "You've made your film, now what? How do you get your product out to the masses?" Do you go to the comprehensive list of distributors in the back of the book and contact these companies? Or do you do it yourself? Create the website, the marketing kit, the word of mouth? How do you get your product out to the consumers?
Film Festivals? What of those? Mr. Hall devotes a chapter to the pluses and minuses of going the festival route and then, what about "Direct to Video?" Do you want to go that path?
Again, Mr. Hall peels away this onion through interviews of some of the top independent film-makers, producers, publicists and distributors working today.
If I had only one issue with the book, it is the lack of mentioning Roger Corman. Either via interview or his own chapter. In my opinion, Roger was one of the first and most influential independent film-makers who distributed his and other films.
All in all, Phil Hall rips the lid off the Independent Film canister to show you what it takes to distribute your independent film. A great book for anyone planning to take this journey.
Independent Film Distribution: How to Make a Successful End Run Around the Big Guys OverviewNo matter how good your film is, if it doesn't get distribution, it will never been seen by anyone. Learn how to break out of the pack and champion your movie by getting it seen and heard by the biggest audience possible!

Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide ReviewEver since Chris Gore's book was published, I have used it in my classes to teach both undergraduate and graduate level film courses. Students respond extremely well to the style that the book is written in and the pragmatic information that the book provides. Gore has done a terrific job at covering not only film festivals, but an insider's look into how young filmmakers and established festival directors think about the process of filmmaking. This book covers a critical area in film school curriculum to prepare students for the world of festivals. I strongly recommend this book and will continue using it for all my teaching. The Rough Guide to American Independent Film (Rough Guide Reference) ReviewAnother killersmart addition to the Rough Guide series, this volume manages to be uber-informative and addictively entertaining -- you'll never get off your toilet! hehe... The section on B-Movie Mogul Roger Corman perfectly gets across whats great about even his not-so-greatest films, and the study of Miramax and Sundance is illuminating and demonstrates the enormous and positive influence these 2 entities have had on the medium. After pouring through this book, its impossible not to make a beeline to Netflix and add dozens of finds to your cue. One aspect of history that this book really nails, is the indie roots of stars like Jack Nicholson, Scorsese, etc and its fun reading about their early and raw cinematic adventures... Also, it was nice to see so many genres represented, the horror section full of ghastly gems...The Rough Guide to American Independent Film (Rough Guide Reference) OverviewThe Rough Guide is the essential companion for anyone interested in American Independent, low-budget and maverick filmmaking. The book looks at the deep-reaching history of American ''indie'' cinema in all its guises, from its earliest incarnations in the 60s and 70s to the growth of indie avatars (Sundance & Miramax) and even considers where it is today. It explores the definitions of ''independent'' film in terms of both aesthetics and means of production and comes complete with a canon of the 50 greatest American ''Indie'' films of all time.

Indie Producers Handbook : Creative Producing From A to Z ReviewI bought this book because it had cool art work and boy was I surprised. I was a student at NYU Tish School of the Arts majoring in Film Producing and this book taught me more about producing than the years I spent at NYU. I read the book from cover to cover in one sitting and then I decided that I would re-read a little each night before going to sleep. So I keep it at my bedside. Every night I learn more and more about the creative side of producing...and discovering that it is as much an art form as directing or writing. This book has really opened my eyes. I don't know who Myrl Schreibman is except that he is on the faculty of UCLA but I wish I had taken courses from him if he is anything like his book. This is a book that I will refer to alot. ThanksIndie Producers Handbook : Creative Producing From A to Z OverviewMyrl Schreibman has written a straighfoward, insightful, and articulate account of what it takes to make a successful feature film.

Rebel without a Deal: or, How a 30-year-old filmmaker with $11,000 almost became a Hollywood player ReviewActually I think this is the most useful book for indie filmmakers EVER written. And with the addition of an interview with Kevin Smith broken up throughout the book, it always kept things entertaining.
As my daughters karate teacher once said, "It's a wise person that learns from others". So if you ever plan to shoot and sell your own movie, I think it would be wise to read this book first. This book gives a blow by blow description of what it took to write, shoot and sell an independently made movie. Written by a smart, funny, hardworking, determined, and insightful guy, that never gave up on his dream.
Absolutely an indie filmmakers bible. A must read for independent filmmakers, but a great read for anyone even slightly interested in independent filmmaking. Or if you just love Kevin Smith.
I highly recommend that you go buy this book.Rebel without a Deal: or, How a 30-year-old filmmaker with $11,000 almost became a Hollywood player OverviewRebel without a Deal chronicles how a High School dropout made his first movie in five days for $11,000 and got it distributed through Warner Bros. where it went on to gross over a million dollars.

Naked Filmmaking: How To Make A Feature-Length Film - Without A Crew - For $10,000 Or Less ReviewMike Carroll opens his book with a confession when he tells us he wants people to buy the book. He wants people to read the book. He has titled it "Naked Filmmaking" with full awareness that the onlooker will be drawn to it since sex controlled America is lured to perversions like a movement in the peripheral. He's an artist with a grasp on the reality of this ever expanding world of technology (the digital age)and holds no illusions in the possibility of being left behind (perhaps his largest fear?). Carroll chapters his book with layers of straight talk, not of the failed outsider but the active explorer who is eager to share his knowledge. One is inspired to take on the task because Carroll makes it seem possible (and it is!), all the while jabbing the low tech thinkers and non-creative hacks with unsettling reality. This book is what got me through the making of my film and I can say, without shame, it stands as the best book on one-man filmmaking (true independence) since "Rebel Without a Crew" by Robert Rodriguez.

Planning the Low-Budget Film ReviewIf you are making your first legitimate movie where people besides your friends and family are depending on you not to screw up big time and you just searched Amazon for books on filmmaking and you need a no-nonsense step by step guide to help you through the behind the scenes process, this is the book for you!
I work with a comedy group in California, and we recently shot our first budgeted short film. As I am the most organized member of the group I was appointed the "Line Producer" and put in charge of making the whole thing come together on the back end. Coming from a theatre background, I knew what went into putting a stage performance together, but I was in the dark when it came to preparing for a film. After scouring Amazon (and a few other sites) this book seemed the most adequate to help me prepare for my job.
I've worked in film before, so a lot of the books I looked at about making a movie spend 2/3 of their volume explaining the difference between DV and Film and what a DP does, but I needed something that cut through that introductory fat, and would help prepare me for pre-production and detail exactly what went into pulling a film together.
This book is that book. It was my bible. It was glued to my side like Biff's Sports Almanac in Back to the Future 2.
Mr. Brown walks you through everything that goes into "making it happen." From breaking down the script into a functional shooting schedule to preparing an accurate budget to determing how far behind schedule you are to making sure there is a place for people to go to the bathroom, it's all in there. Additionally, the book even helped me to prepare for a lot of the basic legal and propreitary issues that we would encounter.
Brown also peppers the book with great anecdotes that help you avoid the pitfalls and roadblocks that he himself has encountered on large feature films like The Goonies. Yeah, The Goonies, you can't mess with someone who worked on The Goonies.
This book is essential. Bottom line. Read it. Love it. Use it.
Make well prepared movies.
Be a hero for your production.Planning the Low-Budget Film OverviewFinalist, 2007 Benjamin Franklin Awards, for Best New Voice Nonfiction and Professional/Technical

The Filmmaker's Book of the Dead: How to Make Your Own Heart-Racing Horror Movie ReviewAs a member of the film-community, I am notoriously critical of these "how-to" texts. In general, they are either 1.) halfheartedly written with recycled material or 2.) unnecessarily pretentious and alienating. Therefore, when I ordered Draven's Book of the Dead, I guess you could say I was dubious of its value. In an (admittedly) unfair way, it began with a "strike against it" ... and won me over in no time!
Pros:
-Draven provides plenty of practical "tips" you may never consider. For instance, Draven suggests renting equipment/shooting during holidays: "I often shoot films 2 weeks before Christmas ... I usually get a lot of equipment upgrades for free" (89). Draven's years of experience become your guide to saving money. Another "for instance" ... exploring thrift-shops for inexpensive props/costumes (92). Not only is this a fantastic suggestion for maintaining a budget, but you'll be more inclined to find "unique" pieces. Clever. Likewise, he offers some critical tips you WILL need ... such as "how to communicate with your editor" (161).
-Draven's text includes "Interview Boxes" in which actors, directors, producers, and composers discuss relevant issues with a dash of humor. (Ex. "What are some of the most annoying, penny-pinching things low-budget films producers do when making a film?" (71).) Moreover, these aren't your "obvious" interviews! I was ecstatic when I spotted Draven's discussion with John D. LeMay. As a huge fan of Friday the 13th: The Series, I very much enjoyed an inside glimpse into this underrated television show. You won't find this attention to originality in any other text. Moreover, these interviews underscore that this is a "guide" for those who know and love the horror genre. This isn't a superficial "Let's have a conversation with John Carpenter" stuff (don't get me wrong, I dig his films, but every text in the world makes him its keystone ... yawn).
-Draven acknowledges a huge catalog of films. Instead of remaining in the "comfort zone" of the last fifteen years, Draven elects to reference Polanski, Murnau, and Corman along with more contemporary directors. Again, this brave move emphasizes how this text appeals to the true fans and creators of horror. And, it is so appreciated!
-I'm going to credit Focal Press for this next "pro." This book has GORGEOUS, full color pages on thick (i.e. expensive) paper-stock! While many publishing houses will release these texts in black and white, Focal did justice to these amazing photos, stills, posters, examples, etc... Beyond mere aesthetics, this enhances the learning potential of this piece. And, believe me, it's worth the couple of extra bucks that were probably added to the book. This is, by all means, an exciting visual masterpiece! I doubt you'll be willing to lend out this book ... it's JUST THAT "beautiful" (And, yeah, I believe a pop-corn box overflowing with viscera can be "beautiful").Cons:
-I honestly cannot find one fault with this text ... and, it's not for lack of searching.
Buy this text if you are a struggling film-maker, a neophyte in the field, a professor of film-studies (it's a great window into the "making-of" stuff) ... even if you are a lover of horror (because you will very much enjoy all the references to obscure films that your friends have never even heard of)! Hey, any text that has stills from Kiersch's Children of the Corn is genius ... and you know it! This book is unadulterated brilliance! Buy it already!

Getting the Money: A Step-By-Step Guide for Writing Business Plans for Film Review
Although there's one or two good books in the market in regards to hardcore fundraising, "Getting The Money" is in a universe of it's own.
The fluff is kept to a minimal, and, conversely, hard facts, tools, and graphs are the focus of this unusual well of information. This
book is not for the half-hearted/half-committed film school grad, but film-makers who want to see their vision as well as their careers
jump to life. In short, I'm ecstatic about this book and consider this a major breakthrough in this ever-evolving and capital driven industry.Getting the Money: A Step-By-Step Guide for Writing Business Plans for Film OverviewFilmmakers interested in financing their own films have to start with a business plan. Few know how to put one together. Getting the Money gives a relaxed, step-by-step approach on how to do so. Of particular use are the financial sections where, for the first time, readers are guided on exactly what to do and exactly how to do it, using examples from sample plans. No more vague instructions that amount to hiring someone else. Once finished with the book, readers will have their own plan they can use to attract financing for their films.

Filmmaking For Dummies ReviewI read this book, as well as others, because I'm taking a stab at filming a screenplay with some other people. I have enjoyed some of the other dummies books, but I thought this one was off target. It is very high level. For example, in the first or second chapter, he goes over what the job roles are for the production assistant, and ten other job titles you might see at the end of a Hollywood movie, and I'm thinking to myself, am I really going to have a full-time grip on my movie? I was hoping this book would focus on the nuts and bolts of making a small-budget / zero-budget film, but it talked about numbers that apply to people who aren't going to be reading a dummies book. On the whole, I thought it was a real surface look at independent filmmaking, and would be appropriate for someone who wanted to learn about it, but not do it. You would be better off buying IFILM Filmmakers Handbook and some individual books on lighting and sound if you really want information about how to make your own film. A lot of the information in this book can be found on the web, also.Filmmaking For Dummies OverviewNow updated--the step-by-step secrets to capturing great moments on film
With all the recent advancements in filmmaking technology, more people than ever are trying their hand at filmmaking. Keeping up with the newest information in this booming field, this updated edition of Filmmaking For Dummies features up-to-the-minute coverage of the latest and greatest hardware, software, accessories, and trends--including high-definition technology and new outlets for films such as YouTube and MySpace. Producer to Producer: A Step-By-Step Guide to Low Budgets Independent Film Producing ReviewWhen you last got in your car and drove to the store - did you even think about all the things that are working in sync that help your car go? Gas, sparkplugs, catalytic converter, carburetor, computer systems, cooling systems, transmissions, gears, oil, etc. No. Most likely you don't think about that until the car stalls out in the middle of busy traffic and you suddenly have to search through the card catalogue of your mind thinking: "Okay, if the car spews black smoke and the engine won't turn over and the doo-hickey doesn't seem to be connected to the whatsis - then I have to..."
When you watch a film do you realize EVERYTHING that went into the process of making it? If you're like most people you define films by two things: Actor and Director. Maybe if you're a writer like me you add the screenwriter into the mix. But for most people it's: "Oh, that's that Meryl Streep movie!" or "I've heard it's one of Scorsese's best films." You certainly don't think: "Oh, wow, I think I'm going to go see that Jerry Bruckheimer production." We often don't think about everything that a producer does - but, more to the point: The producer does EVERYTHING.
In Maureen Ryan's book, she details EVERYTHING a Producer does from searching out the script, attaching the talent, massaging the budget, scheduling, setting up locations, calling in favors, assisting in shooting (possibly being an extra) to coordinating the post production and working through distribution. See? EVERYTHING.
The book is broken down into chronological chapters detailing the life of a film and she uses conversations with some producers to help make her points. She details every step of the process while also providing the reader with great examples of what, say, a budget should look like - or a contact list - or even a press kit. And you can find even more examples at her website.
"Producer to Producer" is fantastically detailed down to every minutia which is both its greatest strength and its strongest weakness. As I read through it I kept thinking to myself: "God, I've got to do a TON of stuff when I produce my next film (I've produced two micro-budget feature films)." But also thinking: "Thank God she goes into the details she goes into in this book because I hazard to guess that everything is in there." It's a bit of a double-edged sword.
As the book goes on through later chapters, she moves away from the conversations with other film-makers only to return later to that format. I would have liked her to have continued that through-out the book and then add more of what I would refer to as "war stories." If you're going to tell me I need to get the rights to a certain song - find a war story about a producer who didn't and how that ended up. I don't necessarily want to be "scared straight" in this process - but feel those stories would add weight to all the details that are being discussed.
For instance, here's a war story: Over a year ago a close friend of mine, a struggling writer, was ecstatic to see that her script was being made into a short. It was being shot in New York City with a decent sized cast and crew, the website posted behind-the-scenes photos and she loved knowing that within a few months there would be a short film with HER NAME ON IT!! Sadly, in post-production, the Editor wanted to get paid what was promised to him and since no pay was forthcoming, held the film hostage and refused to finish it. Where is the film now? Who knows.
How could the producer have foreseen this issue? How could this have been "nipped in the bud?" Where was the money going to come from to finish? How many people were now affected by this outcome? Could there have been an easier, more palatable solution?
Please, let me be very clear, this is an EXCELLENT book that gives you all the tools (and on-line resources) to get started in the land of producing - I would have just liked there to be a few more stories as to WHY it's important to get the rights to songs. WHY it's important to make sure the budget is in place before you start. WHY it's important to approach SAG (or not). Would some of these stories scare other producers away? Certainly...but they would also give weight to why a Producer has to do all that a Producer has to do. (Note: She includes a quick story about hiring a Production Assistant who had little/no experience who ended up damaging equipment that cost $2,500 to repair. Stories like that.)
All-in-all a great book. If you're thinking about ever producing a film - you can't go wrong having this book by your side.
