Shoot Out ReviewI enjoyed reading "Shoot Out". It is filled with behind the scenes stories of how movies were made. This is really how the business of movies really happens.
If you are learning to be an actor or a director or screenwriter, and want to know what happens when you hit "the big time" - this book will give you lots of examples. Amazing stories about famous stars, the movies, deals and the biz.
Well-written and easy to understand. I learned alot about everything that happens before a movie hits the big screen.Shoot Out OverviewHollywood calls it the "shoot out"... the point during the making of a movie when star-fits and power struggles turn into standoffs, walk-outs, and clashing egos. How a film ever gets made is a wonder. Leave it to two industry icons to unreel the true story...

Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide ReviewEver since Chris Gore's book was published, I have used it in my classes to teach both undergraduate and graduate level film courses. Students respond extremely well to the style that the book is written in and the pragmatic information that the book provides. Gore has done a terrific job at covering not only film festivals, but an insider's look into how young filmmakers and established festival directors think about the process of filmmaking. This book covers a critical area in film school curriculum to prepare students for the world of festivals. I strongly recommend this book and will continue using it for all my teaching. The Filmmaker's Guide to Production Design ReviewThis is a handy little guide to production design, but as other reviewers have noted, it is not necessarily meant for a production designer. It's for filmmakers themselves (as noted in the title).
As an independent filmmaker, I found this book an entertaining and informative read. It helped me get a better understanding for just what the art department is involved with on a feature. Also, it inspired me to design the sets for my next film.
Recommended for beginning independent filmmakers who are often their own production designer. For those who want a career in production design this book, although a nice intro, will leave you wanting something deeper. The Filmmaker's Guide to Production Design Overview

Call Me Lucky: A Texan in Hollywood ReviewI borrowed the book from my Mom and absolutely couldn't put it down until I finished it, very well written. I know anyone would enjoy this book about all of the actors and singers that Bobby Hinkle has worked with during his 50 years in show business. It is almost like being there with him as he shares the very interesting and personal stories of the movie and recording stars we all grew up with. I highly recommend this book to anyone, a wonderful read! EGCall Me Lucky: A Texan in Hollywood Overview"Do you think you could teach Rock Hudson to talk like you do?"
The question came from famed Hollywood director George Stevens, and an affirmative answer propelled Bob Hinkle into a fifty-year career in Hollywood as a speech coach, actor, producer, director, and friend to the stars. Along the way, Hinkle helped Rock Hudson, Dennis Hopper, Carroll Baker, and Mercedes McCambridge talk like Texans for the 1956 epic film Giant. He also helped create the character Jett Rink with James Dean, who became a best friend, and he consoled Elizabeth Taylor personally when Dean was killed in a tragic car accident before the film was released.

A few years later, Paul Newman asked Hinkle to do for him what he'd done for James Dean. The result was Newman's powerful portrayal of a Texas no-good in the Academy Award–winning film Hud (1963). Hinkle could—and did—stop by the LBJ Ranch to exchange pleasantries with the president of the United States. He did likewise with Elvis Presley at Graceland. Good friends with Robert Wagner, Hinkle even taught Wagner's wife Natalie Wood how to throw a rope. He appeared in numerous television series, including Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Dragnet, and Walker, Texas Ranger. On a handshake, he worked as country music legend Marty Robbins's manager, and he helped Evel Knievel rise to fame.

From his birth in Brownfield, Texas, to a family so poor "they could only afford a tumbleweed as a pet," Hinkle went on to gain acclaim in Hollywood. Through it all, he remained the salty, down-to-earth former rodeo cowboy from West Texas who could talk his way into—or out of—most any situation. More than forty photographs, including rare behind-the-scenes glimpses of the stars Hinkle met and befriended along the way, complement this rousing, never-dull memoir.

The Green Screen Handbook: Real-World Production Techniques ReviewUsually I'm not an impulse buyer, but this time around I jumped at the opportunity when this book became available. I'm a green-screen amateur by comparison to the author. But this book doesn't overwhelm me with a lot of "technobabble" I have no hope of understanding or using. It's a very user friendly presentation of tips and techniques as well as things to watch out for when producing your own green screen extravaganzas.
There's a nice quality and feel to the book; that sense of durability that lends itself to being able to hold up with a lot of page turns and abuse without falling apart at the seams. There's plenty of pictures and advise. I like it when an author goes out of their way to show as well as to tell. Pictures go a long way to explain what words don't otherwise convey. And when I can see an example of something in action, I'm quick to pick up the technique as my own.
The included DVD has a wealth of video clips and Adobe After Effects project files that goes along with each chapter. You get Quicktime movies, Adobe Photoshop files and more. Gosh there are over 2 gigs worth of HD video footage enough to do some healthy and author encouraged reverse-engineering of project files to better understand how each process fits together and works in producing a quality piece of work in the end. Files are PC or Mac compatible. And everything is written with Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4 in mind.
For me, the quality of the content of this book vastly surpasses the cost and that's value enough to justify my investment. Besides, anything I can learn or what helps me to learn how to be better at what I do is priceless.
Well done!
Cheers! The Green Screen Handbook: Real-World Production Techniques OverviewMake movies and videos with green screen compositing technology with The Green Screen Handbook: Real-World Production Techniques. The Animation Business Handbook ReviewI was looking for a book that could provide details on the inner workings of the animation business. This book did not disappoint. In fact it is much more than I expected. The book details such thing as financing, budgeting, distribution, marketing, pitching your product, operational strategies, and key management fundamentals specific to this industry. It is obvious that the author has been entrenched in this industry and knows it well. Page after page is filled with factual data about production budgets, film revenues (not just box office, all the channels), operational costs, and extremely informative statistical snapshots. This edition was printed in 2004 and the industry has certainly changed, but a vast majority of the information in this book is still relevant today. The Animation Business Handbook OverviewToday, animation is more prevalent than ever in television, films, video games, and the Internet. Karen Raugust has created a much needed, comprehensive look at the entire business. She shows in detail how a successful animation studio or entrepreneur operates, describes the process of developing an animation property from the concept stage through the finished product, and outlines business methods used to create and sell animated media.Topics covered include:* Distribution, sales, and marketing methods* Financing, budgeting, costs and revenue opportunities* The creation of ancillary entertainment and merchandise* Animation in international markets. The Animation Business Handbook is the quintessential reference for anyone in or considering entering the animation industry.
