The Complete Idiot's Guide to Movies, Flicks, and Films ReviewA great introduction to the entire world of film -- not just Hollywood, but a host of world cinemas from European to Latin American to African and Near Eastern. The examples used are well explained and are always pertinent to the points at hand. My favorite chapters were one on film theory (which made obscure concepts accessible to the beginner) and one that used all the concepts introduced in the book to explain the German silent film "Nosferatu." I had just seen the new movie "Shadow of the Vampire," which is based on the making of "Nosferatu"; this book made me understand for the first time what a complex piece of art that early movie is. I highly recommend this book as an affordable intro to film criticism that, while accessible and fun to read, does not talk down to its audience. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Movies, Flicks, and Films OverviewIf you love movies, this entertaining, user-friendly manual offers you a selective guide for finding what you like and for discovering films that are new to you, from 1920s French films to classic Westerns. It covers Hollywoods entire hundred-year history and explains film genre and terminology.

Digital Creativity: Techniques for Digital Media and the Internet ReviewThe author appears to be lost in the sixties (perhaps worse, the '80's). Personal philosophies and idle thoughts are presented as relevant facts. There is a shocking amount of technical errors, even basic optical concepts are incorrect. The interviews have potential but even there the author is so inept that the questions prompt nothing interesting from the contributors. A very disappointing book.Digital Creativity: Techniques for Digital Media and the Internet OverviewMaster the technical skills, creative techniques, and principles of digital designAt last-here is a book that links graphic design fundamentals to the technical and creative knowledge that graphic designers need to work in today's digital and electronic media.Written by a designer for the designer, Digital Creativity explains computer technology in accessible terms as it covers key topics such as Web design, video, audio, and 2D and 3D animation. This comprehensive guide presents an overview of the digital production pipeline, shares principles and techniques for all types of new media, and examines how professionals create commercial art and fine art. Storyboards: Motion In Art, Third Edition Review... I'm an illustrator myself with 23 years of storyboarding experience. This book is an excellent tool for both the novice and the seasoned, old grizzled vet like me. For the novice it explains the process, offers guides to how to approach a board, what's important, staging, mood, the different types of boards markets, billing, promotion... the whole gammut. For the vets, it jogs our memory. We tend to fall into patterns of how we do things and it gets comfortable and perhaps a bit common place... or even sloppy. The book reminded me that there's more than one right way or any single solution and maybe the 1st and easiest way isn't the best. There are some great samples of different styles of boards from different artists and a good focus on thinking before drawing. It's a good, usefull addition to my ever expanding library and anyone in the field or wanting to be in the field should consider getting a copy. Make sure it's the 2nd edition... a far more extensive and complete book than the earlier edition. (I now have both)Storyboards: Motion In Art, Third Edition Overview

Modern Art 1851-1929: Capitalism and Representation (Oxford History of Art) ReviewThis review concerns the quality of the Kindle Edition of this book which I purchased in August 2011. The digital transfer is extremely poor quality and the book is difficult to read on a Kindle and on Kindle for PC.
The only positive thing I can say about the transfer is that any typographical errors from the scanning process have been corrected. Word and letter spacing are consistent and numbers and letters are not confused.
The formatting of the table of contents is strange and choppy and the text formatting is no better. Headlines are displayed in an enormous font size which does not change and the text font size is larger than any other of my other Kindle books at the same font size setting. When I read this title, I have to set the font size smaller than I normally would, then switch back to my preferred setting when reading other titles.
Also, the footnotes are not hyperlinked. The notes are in a chapter at the end of the book and if you want to check a note while reading, you must leave your page and manually page through the notes chapter to find the relevant note.
Worst of all, the product page on Amazon advertises 73 color illustrations which do not exist in the Kindle Edition. Every photo is scanned in grayscale. In contrast, a Kindle Edition of another Oxford History of Art title which I own has many color illustrations viewable when reading the book on Kindle for PC or Mac. There is no reason that this title could not also have the promised color illustrations.
In fact, there is no reason that this digital transfer should be so awful. It completely eliminates any convenience of a Kindle book. If I had known it was this poor, I would never have purchased the Kindle Edition.Modern Art 1851-1929: Capitalism and Representation (Oxford History of Art) OverviewRichard R. Brettell's innovative and beautifully-illustrated account, the latest addition to the acclaimed Oxford History of Art series, explores the works of artists such as Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, and Dali--as well as lesser-known figures--in relation to expansion, colonialism, nationalism and internationalism, and the rise of the museum. Beginning with The Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, Brettell follows the development of the major European avant-garde groups: the Realists, Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, Symbolists, Cubists, and Surrealists. Giving attention to the changing social, economic, and political climate, the book focuses on conditions for the development of modern art such as urban capitalism, modernity, and the accessible image made possible by art museums, temporary exhibitions, lithography, and photography. Brettell examines artists' responses to modernism, including changes in representation, vision, and "the art of seeing." Combining the most recent scholarship with 140 illustrations--75 in full color--the book chronicles the change in art and image itself, from the iconology of new representations of the nude human form to the anti-iconography of "art without 'subject'": landscape painting, text and image, and abstraction. Tracing common themes of representation, imagination, perception, and sexuality across works in a wide range of different media, and offering profuse illustration to bring the changing art forms vividly to life, Modern Art 1851-1929 presents a fresh approach to the fine art and photography of this remarkable era.

Producing Animation, Second Edition ReviewI am an animation artist who has also worked as a producer and production manager. PRODUCING ANIMATION attempts to explain an under-researched topic, but also helps perpetuate the idea that you need to have five managers for every artist on an animated picture. Top heavy management and overproduced films that are in production before their story is set are the true reasons for the skyrocketing costs of animation in the past few years. There are some horror stories here, such as the 'executive' who thought he could rewrite dialogue...after the picture had been animated. The authors also decry an 'artistic supervisor' (could that possibly be a director?) who (oh dear) wanted to make changes. The executive got his changes. The artist, they imply, did not. They also claim that artists have to be told by production people when to give up their artwork so that they can meet the production schedule. So the blame for production delays is invariably placed on the artists, who are a 'rag tag team', not highly trained professionals. Portions of the book are useful: blueprints for schedules (nothing about 'complexity of the film' setting the neat little figures back though.) Anyone who wishes to produce animated films and who does not have any idea what the artists do on the project (and sadly that describes a good many producers) would do well to read the sections on the PRODUCTION PLAN and PRODUCTION CREW.
There is one helpful quote at the beginning of this book from Warner Television executive Ken Duer. "...it would only make sense to let the directors direct and be creatively responsible for the project and let the producers manage and create a 'stage' for creative artists so that the artists can do what they do best."
They didn't need to write any more about the 'function of the producer' after that. But it was amusing to see the authors attempt to justify the existence of a 'line producer' whose job descriptions are duplicated by the associate producer; and they actually admit that the associate-executive-in-charge-of-assistant-to-the producer titles are more a product of 'what an agent or representative is able to negotiate for their clients, wholly independent of their actual ability.'
Artists, buy this book and read it. Know who you are dealing with. Producers, read it and learn, but have some respect for the artists. They are, after all, the ones actually producing something.Producing Animation, Second Edition Overview

Producing Animation is your answer.

Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination (Vintage) ReviewHaving collected and read about Walt Disney and animation for 30+ years, I found that the only proper way to read Gabler's biography is as follow-up to the great book by Michael Barrier, "An Animated Man", also available on Amazon. Barrier gives the structure of Walt's life as centered on Walt's true loves: his animation and his parks. While Barrier's book is a very pleasant read, and gives insight in what made Walt tick. As a contrast, Gabler recites data as if it was a class in Latin and represents Walt as a kind of nut. Gabler clearly neither likes nor understands Walt. He also has no knowledge of--or love for--the medium of animation, and he keeps talking of Walt's "animations," an expression that is only used by people who have no idea what they are talking about. But he did have access to the Archives, and thus some things are only to be found in his book. There are many, many factual errors in Gabler's book. A huge list can be found on Barriers's site (Google "GablerErrata"). And as a final note, on that same site, one can read that Diane Disney Miller herself thinks the Gabler book is a gross misrepresentation of her father (Google "Diane_On_Gabler"). So buy both books, read Barrier first, then Gabler, and then make up your own mind!Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination (Vintage) Overview

Designs on Film: A Century of Hollywood Art Direction ReviewThe product copy above does not do justice to this splendid and sumptuous doorstopper on Hollywood art direction. The photographs are the payoff here, literally hundreds of production stills detailing on-the-set constructions and activity. My eye tells me that I have not seen most of these photos before in other Hollywood books. I think the book would serve better if it cut off after the 1970s and included more on the silent era and 1930s when the concept of art direction in film was nurtured and flourished. The 80s are focused on special effects and much of the new millennium material look like nothing more than Town & Country layouts. Nonetheless, the bulk of the book will take the Golden Era Hollywood fan to another place and time in American history, creative and socially.Designs on Film: A Century of Hollywood Art Direction Overview
Who can forget the over-the-top, white-on-white, high-gloss interiors through which Fred Astaire danced in Top Hat? The modernist high-rise architecture, inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, in the adaptation of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead? The lavish, opulent drawing rooms of Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence? Through the use of film design-called both art direction and production design in the film industry-movies can transport us to new worlds of luxury, highlight the ornament of the everyday, offer a vision of the future, or evoke the realities of a distant era. In Designs on Film, journalist and interior designer Cathy Whitlock illuminates the often undercelebrated role of the production designer in the creation of the most memorable moments in film history. Through a lush collection of rare archival photographs, Whitlock narrates the evolving story of art direction over the course of a century-from the massive Roman architecture of Ben-Hur to the infamous Dakota apartment in Rosemary's Baby to the digital CGI wonders of Avatar's Pandora.

Drawing on insights from the most prominent Hollywood production designers and the historical knowledge of the venerable Art Directors Guild, Whitlock delves into the detailed process of how sets are imagined, drawn, built, and decorated. Designs on Film is the must-have look book for film lovers, movie buffs, and anyone looking to draw interior design inspiration from the constructions and confections of Hollywood. Whitlock lifts the curtain on movie magic and celebrates the many ways in which art direction and set design allow us to lose ourselves in the diverse worlds showcased on the big screen.

Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business ReviewI found this book to not only be an interesting read but very informative too. It starts off as a guide for those who have never freelanced before but as you move on through the chapters it suggests that you have started your business and by the end it talks about the future.
It is a great book for those who are starting out at the very beginning but is also useful for people (like me) who have been working for themselves for a while. There is information on setting up a portfolio, what kind of person you need to be to be able to do this sort of work and has a big focus on those that work for clients.
For me, the best parts of the book were the profile interviews with other creative freelancers who are successful in their own business as well as the chapters on pricing, agents and balancing work and personal life.
The pricing chapter was particularly helpful to me, so much so that I actually wished I could hug the authors when I read it.
I also appreciated the chapter on finding an agent and whether that might be the right decision for you. The balancing of work and personal life (something I'm not that great at) was also helpful, especially from a standpoint from someone who's been-there-done-that.
The book is honest and funny at times and it doesn't make the world of freelancing sound like a whole lot of long lunches and never ending holidays, which I think adds to its usefulness. But it doesn't make it sound like a hell that you'll wish you never entered either. I will also note that while it is written for an American audience, other than the parts about becoming a business in a legal sense and the tax requirements, it seems pretty universal and certainly applicable to Australian and international readers.
I will be keeping this book close to hand so that I can refer to it over and over, I think it will be a great resource and I'm already considering buying another copy for a friend of mine who I think will benefit from it too.
Thanks to Meg and Joy for writing this resource, I think it's the kind of book that will stay relevant for years to come.Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business OverviewAs the hipster classic Craft, Inc. did for crafters, this book will teach all types of creativesillustrators, photographers, graphic designers, animators, and morehow to build a successful business doing what they love. Freelancing pros Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Deangdeelert Cho explain everythingfrom creating a standout portfolio to navigating the legal issues of starting a business. 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die ReviewAlthough this book provided an acceptably organized compilation of movie classics, I was bugged by the fact that reviews/thoughts included spoilers, or revelations of the movies' endings.
I purchased this book in order to discover movies I knew not of previously or had heard of and was interested in seeing. The occasional spoilers are given without warning and made me read with caution to those movies that I did not yet know the outcome of, which was quite tedious.
Overall, the reviews were convincing and thoughtful when not completely blatant, but do proceed with caution.1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Overview

How To Draw Crazy Cars & Mad Monsters Like a Pro (Motorbooks Studio) ReviewMy kids just loved this book. They are both aspiring artists and have done some great work since Christmas! How To Draw Crazy Cars & Mad Monsters Like a Pro (Motorbooks Studio) OverviewChopped, slammed, channeled, blown . . . in the late '50s and early '60s all of these features lent themselves nicely to the rise of hot rod art that caricaturized the already severe design traits associated with these cars. Usually, the rods and customs in this art were piloted by slobbering, snaggle-toothed "monsters" with bulging, bloodshot eyes. Thanks to the iron-on T-shirt boom of the '70s and a raft of younger artists working today, hot rod monsters have persevered. Now award-winning car-designer Thom Taylor and legendary kustom culture figure Ed Newton reveal the tricks and techniques used by masters past and present to render these whack rods and their warts-and-all drivers. Beginning with a brief history of the form, the authors examine figures like Stanley Mouse, Ed Roth, and Newton himself, then reveal how those pioneers influenced modern artists like Keith Weesner, John Bell, and Dave Deal, to name a few. In addition to offering chapters covering topics like equipment, perspective, light sources, and other technical considerations, Taylor expands on the cartooning, proportion, and color chapters from his previous works, applying them to the subject at hand. Also includes dozens of examples of the form from many of the above-mentioned artists and more.
