The Scarecrow Video Movie Guide ReviewThe Greatest Video Store in the World has released THE SCARECROW VIDEO MOVIE GUIDE. The Scarecrow Video Store is a true mecca for movie lovers located in Seattle Washington's University District. This 808 page celebration of film is written by the friends and workers of the store. They bring to the concept of Movie Guide Books exactly what they bring to Video Store--obsessive passionate iconiclastic eclectisism. After an introduction the book starts with a section on
14 Chapters categorize the movies in a unique way.
In Chapter 1: DIRECTORS you'll find movies listed according to the last names of the fine folks who directed them.So this section starts out with 3 movies by drive in trash maestro, Al Adamson: Black Heat, Mean Mother and Satan's Sadists. No, they don't include all of Adamson's film (and skip over perhaps his best known Dracula Versus Frankenstein) but the idea seems to be to travel down roads not as well traveled as other movie guidebooks. So what movies do they include of Woody and Altman and Richard Lester and Herschell Gordon Lewis? Who did they leave out of the director's section that they should have in there (Doris Wishman, Richard Rush, Ted V. Mikels perhaps?)
Then there's 13 more chapters and you get nearly 4,000 capsule reviews from a variety of perspectives and some mini-essays on diverse filmmakers from Anthony Mann, and Les Blanc to Silent Film-maker Nell Shipman. There's bonus lists like 'Movies We Wish Were on DVD', 'The Most Depressing Movies Ever Made' and 'Best Musical Documentaries Ever Made.'
If you're confused by how this book is organized there are 3 indexes that will help sort it out for you.
Also readable is what amounts to the Scarecrow Video Store story which opens the book. George Latsios (and Rebecca) started the world famous store with little more than George's passionate obsession with movies both very good and very bad. They built a remarkable rentable collection that includes many impossible to find treasures. Brain cancer took George from us, but there were two saviors who wanted to preserve and take further what George did with Scarecrow Video.
Do I really believe that a Movie Guide book that actually features a good review for the awful Bond movie A VIEW TO A KILL can possibly be worth buying and treasuring. Yes, I sure do.
The capsule reviews are not written by professionals but by a large group of knowledgeable movie nuts, most of who work, or use to work, at Scarecrow Video Store.
You see most of us who are likely to read from cover to cover a movie guide like this already know that A View to a Kill is the last Roger Moore Bond movie and it feels so tired and forced that even Christopher Walken's somewhat restrained performance and Grace Jones' outrageous fashion can't help overcome how awful the film is or how annoying Tanya Roberts and her many many "Oh James" exclamations truly are.So the review really sticks out as something so completely wrong and out of touch that it is... well. . . worth reading. Yeah that also meant you'll have to pay attention when this reviewer: N.J. aka Nathan Jensen recommends a movie you don't know anything about because perhaps his taste meter is on a completely different scale than yours. You'll also find a few minor research errors like the one in the listing for 1983's Octopussy, N.J. writes "It's little wonder Moore quit after this film." Moore's last Bond film was of course 1985's A View to a Kill. Oops. Might want to fix that one for the Second Printing.
Please Note: Scarecrow founder George Latsios. would have expected nothing less of me than to find a few mistakes and to nit-pick about a few things in this book. After all I'm the guy who embarrassed him about not having a copy of THE GLORY STOMPERS in Scarecrow several years ago as well as many other... uh memorable films. (And of course TGS is NOT in the guide book! As Dennis Hopper might say: "Man, that's just not cool, man." )
Every once in a while a movie gets two reviews. Sometimes this is a necessary like say with Wes Craven's Last House on the Left. Sometimes both reviews say about the same thing like for 1985's Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins so you wonder why two reviews were necessary.
There are plenty of examples of worthless movies getting their due in this guide too. You'll find 1997's Spice World appropriately dissected as a movie not bad enough to be good and not good enough to watch. And I don't know what bet "N.H." lost that he got to review King Kong Lives, but at least he got to have his say about Posession elsewhere in the guide.Yeah this thing might drive you a little crazy. (I mean where are reviews forBad Girls Go to Hell,Girl with Gold Boots and did I mention Glory Stompers? But that's a good thing that it engages you and gets you passionate about movies again isn't it? Sure it is.
I mean I think there's something wonderfully subversive that you review a few Oliver Stone movies and completely ignore Platoon and Wall Street.
What else can I say about a book that features reviews that embrace Brewster McCloud, el Topo, Oscar (! With Stallone!!!) and understands the appeal of Rudy Ray Moore movies, pays tribute to Les Blanc, gives a thumbs up review to A View to a Kill and wonderfully insists Amityville Horror is a ridiculous boring movie?Read with pleasure what is written in the reviews of all the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movies (the re-make and Leatherface too)!!! Discover Poland's Sargossa Manuscript, Sweden's The Man on the Roof, Thailand's Killer Tattoo, Iran's Secret Ballot and The Circle, Germany's Tuvalu, Videograms of a Revolution and much more.
Sure you might get frustrated when a list tells you one of the best Musical documentaries is something called Inside Bjork but you won't find a review of it anywhere in the book. (Gee, guess you'll have to get to Scarecrow Video in Seattle and rent the thing yourself, huh?). Feel utterly vindicated when 1998's Armageddon and Michael Bay are torn new ones by the kind of capsule review you wished a published critic would have written and then read a review of the same flick in which it is declared a wonderful guilty pleasure of a movie!!! Ah one man's rotting bile is another's junk food pig-out. Throw up your hands, dance the Watusi and read the book some more.
If you liked Michael Weldon's Psychotronic books you'll do flips over this one. If you want the guide-book with the most accurate running times and release dates of movies then buy Leonard Maltin's book. If you want a mostly accurate and exhaustive listing of lots of movies rated with dog bones by a team of reviewers whose tastes run the full gamut of all genre but are fairly predictable and mainstream-then be sure to get your copy of the Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever Book. However if you want an alternately brilliant and frustrating guide to movies-many of which aren't found in other guides-then buy The Scarecrow Video Movie Guide ASAP. It may be-- or is that, maybe-- the best guide of them all.Christopher J. Jarmick co-wrote the critically acclaimed mystery suspense novel: The Glass Cocoon

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Movies, Flicks, and Films ReviewA great introduction to the entire world of film -- not just Hollywood, but a host of world cinemas from European to Latin American to African and Near Eastern. The examples used are well explained and are always pertinent to the points at hand. My favorite chapters were one on film theory (which made obscure concepts accessible to the beginner) and one that used all the concepts introduced in the book to explain the German silent film "Nosferatu." I had just seen the new movie "Shadow of the Vampire," which is based on the making of "Nosferatu"; this book made me understand for the first time what a complex piece of art that early movie is. I highly recommend this book as an affordable intro to film criticism that, while accessible and fun to read, does not talk down to its audience. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Movies, Flicks, and Films OverviewIf you love movies, this entertaining, user-friendly manual offers you a selective guide for finding what you like and for discovering films that are new to you, from 1920s French films to classic Westerns. It covers Hollywoods entire hundred-year history and explains film genre and terminology.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Classic Movies ReviewIt is almost an oxymoron to read a book about movies, since books are to stimulate your brain and movies are merely entertainment. But the fact is, many book are not worth the paper they are printed on, and certain movies have a profound impact on us. Thus, we have this book by Lee Pfeiffer. Let's examine the evidence.
1)Organization. Good. The sound movies in this book are organized by sixteen genres such as Westerns, Comedies, Romances, and so forth. And for the most part it works. Occasionally, the author goes off the path. For example, John Wayne's The Quiet Man is listed under Comedy, rather than Romances. Also under Comedies are Mr. Smith Goes To Washington and Lilies of the Field. Similarly movies like A Christmas Carol and It's A Wonderful Life are found listed under Sci-Fi/Fantasy. It would have been better had the author made another category like Inspirational to put those movies in. Then again, a good movie is hard to classify. That's why the author wisely put in several indexes.
2)Movie Choices. Great, especially the silent movies which are often overlooked. By organizing the book of genre, classic animation movies like Dumbo and Pinocchio get their due, as well as certain Hammer horror movies. The author mentions how a friend of his despises It's A Mad...Mad World, but he included it anyway. Good call. However, the author refers to the 1955 Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston as a bad movie. Thumbs down on that. Ten Commandments made the American Film Institute's top 100 inspirational films and Moses made the AFI's top 50 heroes. I also wished that he included Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. The truly bad part is that the films only go to 1969. So that means that Patton (1970) and other classics didn't make it. But that's the fault of the editors. Hopefully, a second volume will remedy that.
3) Information. Excellent. The author is at home with the subject. He lists the company, director, producer, writer, running time, and main actors with their roles, followed by a brief synopsis. He includes composers, like Max Steiner and Elmer Bernstein who have blessed many of my favorite films with memorable tunes. And he did get one detail wrong when he says that Bela Lugosi of Dracula fame died with drug addiction. Bela bravely conquered his addiction, albeit, at the end of his life (at least that what I was told in the commentary to Universal's Dracula). Still, some of the information he reveals is amazing, for example a big error in the movie Yankee Doodle Dandy. (No, I'm not going to tell you.) I only wish there were a good photograph for each movie, but that's just me.
4) Appendix and Index. Great. You are treated to AFI's top 100 films, AFI's top 100 quotes (what we got here is failure to communicate), top ten box office stars 1950-1969, and useful websites. There are indexes of Actors, Directors, and Movies. The indexes make the book very user friendly to find your favorite actor's movies.
The jury finds that while this books isn't for a student wanted to go in-depth over a specific film, it is extremely valuable for the average Joe who wants to know about classic films and where to start. Verdict: Not Guilty.
P.S. I hope his editors give him the green light for a sequel. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Classic Movies OverviewSit back, grab some popcorn, and let the credits roll. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Classic Movies provides comprehensive information on the best classic films from the silent era up through 1969, cross-referenced several different ways for easy access. Also contains fun, "insider" trivia and facts about the movies, the stars, and factors that influenced the movie or the audience at the time of the movie's release. • Written by a recognized name in the industry who has written books on movies and film for decades • Features only the best movies (3 and 4 stars) from the silent era up through 1969 • Offers several indexes, which are cross-referenced alphabetically by actor and director, in addition to the main text being indexed by film name and genre • Includes appendices that provide information on the top 100 films of all time, the greatest movie quotes, Academy Award winners, and Internet references for locating hard-to-find films

Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies ReviewHere's a real treat for fans of science fiction movies. Gary Gerani's TOP 100 SCI-FI MOVIES is an entertaining, insightful and well-illustrated guide to great science fiction films of the past 80 years. To paraphrase director John Carpenter, who wrote the Introduction to Gerani's book, "For movie addicts, it doesn't get much better than this." Here, here.
In reverse order, Gerani counts down "cinema's most significant science fiction endeavors." Number 100 is EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS. You'll have to read the book to find out #1! Each film gets at least a full-page spread. Many get two pages; a very few get four. After listing 'Who Made It' production details, Gerani gives a 'What It's About' plot summary followed by a lengthy 'Why It's Important' discussion on the film and its impact. Likewise, each film is illustrated by at least one or more photographs and/or movie poster artwork. Some titles rate more illustrations. THEM, for example, has the original color movie poster and eight b&w production stills. 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA features a color poster and nine color stills.
Paging through TOP 100 SCI-FI MOVIES is akin to taking a walk down memory lane. The films covered include INVADERS FROM MARS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, MATRIX, GODZILLA, STAR TREK II, VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, ON THE BEACH, ALIENS, FORBIDDEN PLANET, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, METROPOLIS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, FANTASTIC VOYAGE, FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, THE FLY, ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS, DARK STAR, THE CONQUEST OF SPACE and many others. Gerani's affectionate yet critical commentary makes for entertaining reading.
In short, Science Fiction Film buffs should pick up a copy of Gerani's book. It's a fun, thought-provoking guided tour through many fondly-remembered cinematic treats. Highly recommended.Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies OverviewFantastic Press strikes again with its second trade paperback offering, this time exploring the ultra-fanciful universe of spaceships, exotic planets, time travel, and extraterrestrials. The "Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies" are reviewed and ranked by fantasy screenwriter/film historian Gary Gerani, who covers everything from early silent groundbreakers like A Trip to the Moon to today's widescreen, computer-generated blockbusters. With over 600 rare visuals, full-color layouts. and an introduction by one of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, this exciting new pictorial overview is the ideal companion book to 2010's Top 100 Horror Movies.

A History of Horror ReviewA History of Horror is an engaging overview of the history of horror cinema. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject, or who wants to know more about the genre. Dixon is a great writer, and I was impressed by the ground he managed to cover in only 210 pages. The only negative to the book is he sometimes slips into a "those were the days" routine, forcing his particular vision of what horror should be on the reader. I love a moody atmospheric film that doesn't rely on gore as much as the next person, but that isn't the only flavor out there that has merit.A History of Horror OverviewEver since horror leapt from popular fiction to the silver screen in the late 1890s, viewers have experienced fear and pleasure in exquisite combination. Wheeler Winston Dixon's A History of Horror is the only book to offer a comprehensive survey of this ever-popular film genre.Arranged by decades, with outliers and franchise films overlapping some years, this one-stop sourcebook unearths the historical origins of characters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman and their various incarnations in film from the silent era to comedic sequels. A History of Horror explores how the horror film fits into the Hollywood studio system and how its enormous success in American and European culture expanded globally over time.Dixon examines key periods in the horror film-in which the basic precepts of the genre were established, then banished into conveniently reliable and malleable forms, and then, after collapsing into parody, rose again and again to create new levels of intensity and menace. A History of Horror, supported by rare stills from classic films, brings over fifty timeless horror films into frightfully clear focus, zooms in on today's top horror Web sites, and champions the stars, directors, and subgenres that make the horror film so exciting and popular with contemporary audiences.

The Great Movies II ReviewAs always, Roger Ebert does not let his readers down with his new book, "Great Movies II." Like its predecessor, "Great Movies I", "II" looks back at films that were released before Ebert started writing film reviews for the "Chicago Sun-Times."
Ebert reviews many of my all time favorites in this book -- "The Searchers", "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Paris, Texas" and so many more.
Most of you probably only know Ebert through the television program, "Ebert & Roeper." If so, you're loosing a luxury of great film critique writing that Ebert provides through the Chicago newspaper and online at http://www.rogerebert.suntimes.com.
Ebert does not just review films - just about anybody can do that, instead, he analyzes them and shares with the reader something deeper found in the film than one may ever realize. The reader is left with a deeper appreciation not only of the movie reviewed but also of the art of filmmaking in general.
I hope that Ebert will continue to grace us with his film thinking in future volumes as well. The Great Movies II Overview

Top 100 Horror Movies ReviewIf you're a long-time horror film fan (like me) you're going to love Gary Gerani's new book, TOP 100 HORROR MOVIES. Who among us has not constructed our own top 10, top 50 or top 100 favorite horror film list over the years? The immediate temptation upon holding this book in your hands is to thumb through it immediately like any other profusely illustrated new book. STOP! DON'T DO IT! You'll instantly be mired in moving from title to title, agreeing here and perhaps even hating a choice there. To properly savor this wonderful fun read, set it aside for a time when you have bracketed at least an hour to start it. It's the kind of book that is best enjoyed after the wife and/or kids are in bed for the night. Turn off the TV; resist the further temptation of having a DVD film on in the background, even one you're overly familiar with. Make sure you have your favorite beverage and (non-greasy) snack at hand. Then you're ready to begin. Approach it like you would a good novel from page one onward. Each turn of the page will bring you to an old friend, or perhaps a film you've heard of but have never seen or a choice you simply can't believe has been included where it is (or even in the book itself!). But that's the real pleasure isn't it? Gerani is a long-time film historian, a man who grew up in the Fifties and saw many of these films as they were released, before their individual uniqueness was compromised by remakes and copycats and by the end of the book you'll realize that you've spent your time in the presence of a real genre film fan. He expectedly presents the important particulars about each movie before moving on to discuss why he's chosen it for inclusion. Familiar as well as rare color and black and white photos accompany the text, and Gerarni has even included original poster advertising showing how classy or classless the studios promoted their product upon original release. Like all of us Gerani has his own personal favorites which sometimes trumps what many would consider a superior film; there is even a title or two that are so awful they are included because of Gerani's belief in their historical importance and/or long term effect on the genre as a whole. That's where I would have placed a better but perhaps less important film. But it's not my book, or yours, but Gary Gerani's and the bottom line is it's worth your money, your time, and a place on your bookshelf. You'll be pulling it down for renewed inspection for years to come. What more can you ask of a book?Top 100 Horror Movies OverviewEvery fan plays the game... what's the best movie of all time, the second best, and did my favorite make it into the "Top 100"? Fantastic Press proudly launches an exciting new series of gift books that colorfully explore popular motion picture genres, reviewing and ranking the best each genre has to offer. With imaginative, full-color layouts and a sense of spirited fun, each book in this custom-designed series begins with coverage of Movie #100, then suspensefully "ascends" to the Number One choice! Along the way, avid readers are treated to rare photos and posters, priceless information, and never-before published cultural artifacts. For the first Fantastic Press offering, it's horror against horror in the ultimate scary movie match-up. Screenwriter/film historian Gary (Pumpkinhead) Gerani presents and evaluates the cinema's most celebrated shockers, from silent classics to today's gleefully audacious gorefests. This super-colorful overview contains over 600 rare visuals, and features a brand-new introduction by celebrated horror movie director Roger Corman.

Horror Movie Freak ReviewIn my opinion, Don has written this book the most appropriate way possible: by not being too scholarly and by talking to the reader as one horror freak to another horror freak or horror freak-in-training. For the last few years, I've proudly written for his site and it was an honor to help create the master film list for this book. I've always believed the most important thing in reviewing horror is to not be afraid to admit that you love it or that you love certain films, and Don captures that idea beautifully, preaching the gospel and virtues of being an unabashed, unashamed Horror Freak. It is one thing to make a "simple" list of "The 100 best films". It is quite another, and far better in some ways, to make a list of movies that are important to a well-rounded, foundational knowledge of the genre....a primer, if you will. Everyone needs a place to start in the genre...or a way for seasoned vets to remember movies they haven't revisted in a long time. Horror Movie Freak fills that void.
Horror Movie Freak OverviewYou'll scream with delight while reading this fun and engaging book that discusses fright flicks all horror fans need to see to ascend to the level of a true Horror Freak—from classics (Dracula and Psycho) to modern movies (Drag Me to Hell) and lesser-known gems (Dog Soldiers).
Movies are divided into various categories, including Asian horror, beginners, homicidal slashers, supernatural thrillers, and zombie invasion. Features more than 130 movies, 250+ photos of movie stills and posters, and a chapter on remakes and reimaginings. The book also includes the DVD of George A. Romero's original 1968 version of Night of the Living Dead.
