Independent Film Distribution: How to Make a Successful End Run Around the Big Guys ReviewIt is always a bitter pill to swallow when I tell my students that after all their hard work, time, energy and passion that they will eventually end up with a product. It is not necessarily a bad thing for them to realize that, once they are done writing their screenplay, they have to treat it like it is the newest product out on the market. And, yes, they have to market it. To market it, they have to distribute it.
The book "INDEPENDENT FILM DISTRIBUTION" does a great job getting to the core of what this journey entails. With a mix of interviews and commentary, Phil Hall, explores this process from the ground up. He delves into the roots of Independent Film and then shows how those roots have grown into the apple tree of today.
What is "Independent Film?" Well, it depends on who you ask. Phil Hall explores that question and then takes it further into: "You've made your film, now what? How do you get your product out to the masses?" Do you go to the comprehensive list of distributors in the back of the book and contact these companies? Or do you do it yourself? Create the website, the marketing kit, the word of mouth? How do you get your product out to the consumers?
Film Festivals? What of those? Mr. Hall devotes a chapter to the pluses and minuses of going the festival route and then, what about "Direct to Video?" Do you want to go that path?
Again, Mr. Hall peels away this onion through interviews of some of the top independent film-makers, producers, publicists and distributors working today.
If I had only one issue with the book, it is the lack of mentioning Roger Corman. Either via interview or his own chapter. In my opinion, Roger was one of the first and most influential independent film-makers who distributed his and other films.
All in all, Phil Hall rips the lid off the Independent Film canister to show you what it takes to distribute your independent film. A great book for anyone planning to take this journey.
Independent Film Distribution: How to Make a Successful End Run Around the Big Guys OverviewNo matter how good your film is, if it doesn't get distribution, it will never been seen by anyone. Learn how to break out of the pack and champion your movie by getting it seen and heard by the biggest audience possible!

Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide ReviewEver since Chris Gore's book was published, I have used it in my classes to teach both undergraduate and graduate level film courses. Students respond extremely well to the style that the book is written in and the pragmatic information that the book provides. Gore has done a terrific job at covering not only film festivals, but an insider's look into how young filmmakers and established festival directors think about the process of filmmaking. This book covers a critical area in film school curriculum to prepare students for the world of festivals. I strongly recommend this book and will continue using it for all my teaching. The Sundance Kids: How the Mavericks Took Back Hollywood ReviewMottram's "Sundance Kids" is subtitled "How the mavericks took back Hollywood". Except, of course, in the end they didn't. And that is only the beginning to some of the problems that plague this book (which I bought for a dollar on a sale table at the local book store).
Long on history but short on style, Mottram gives the reader a 3-decade glimpse of what the "mavericks" were up to during the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Using The Sundance Film Festival as his yardstick, he cherry-picks various directors, writers and producers to cover, showing their beginnings, their inspirations and their cumulative output to date. It's a good primer on art films, outsider films and indy productions and anyone interested in Hollywood as seen through the independent lens will enjoy what content it has to offer from an educational standpoint.
But that's where the enjoyment ends.
The tone of this 512-page encyclopedia of indy films is slanted towards popular writers and directors he obviously loves and it leaves out multitudes of others he apparently does not. Mottram waxes lovingly of Soderburg, Tarentino and the like in an apparent move to stay on the good side, possibly in order to garner future interviews. What's left out are the crass egotistical interviews, on-set tantrums, belligerent badgering and horrifying treatment of actors, set crew and others - most notably from director Russell, whose fights with actors are legendary (see: YouTube's viral video of actor Lily Tomlin tangling with him on the set of I Heart Huckabees and losing her temper after he's made so many instant changes she can't tell which end is up). It's akin to watching a loving biopic by the very directors themselves, wherein almost everything negative is left on the cutting room floor.
Mottram's writing style is pre-college-level at best. Sentence structure is poor in many places and the work does not flow well from one subject to the next. I found it difficult to get through some chapters since his knowledge of subject and predicate seem to be lacking. The absence of these basic writing tenants hurt an otherwise revealing book, but don't let that stop you from reading it. There are very few other books out there like this one - as mediocre as it is.

Set out in straightforward language the book is an extensive guide for those new to the industry and seasoned professionals alike. The book also includes a very timely chapter on the impact of the Internet on the film industry and explores the financial possibilities offered by this so-called `Seventh Major'. The Independent Filmmaker's Guide to Writing a Business Plan for Investors ReviewThis book gets to the heart of the matter when it comes to telling students/readers what works and what doesn't, what is necessary and what isn't, when it comes to searching for funds for your project. A lot of the information appeared to be common sense, but then I realized it was the writer who made it appear so simple. I read another book where you had to be an accountant or attorney to make heads or tales of the information. This book spells everything out in plain English and makes you fully comprehend what you're reading with creative examples and comparisons. This book is essential reading for anyone seriously interested in taking the next step as a filmmaker. The Independent Filmmaker's Guide to Writing a Business Plan for Investors OverviewIndependent filmmakers by nature are creative individuals whose primary tools are their imaginations and ingenuity. They are cinematic storytellers. While some independent films take the film festivals by storm—distribution deals, sales to video outlets and cable television—others fall short. Luck and timing play roles in most success stories, but many independent filmmakers have taken the next step: They have carved out a clear-cut plan of action—a business plan—for their projects and careers, analyzing them for what they truly are: businesses. This work helps to connect the creative process and the business side of independent filmmaking by providing a practical guide for assembling a business plan that filmmakers can present to producers and potential investors. A sample business plan and interviews with independent filmmakers and industry executives are included.

Bankroll: A New Approach to Financing Feature Films Review***** Five Stars out of Five! Best book on film fundraising yet! It really gave me a shot in the arm to raise money for my next feature. It's written from a practitioner, not a theorist perspective, in other words Tom has done it from scratch and writes in a conversational style. Artists sometimes forget the second word in "show business" is business, and Tom demystifies the business of bankrolling features in the indie world. God bless you Tom for selflessly sharing your insights, may He multiply back to you everything you have and give.Bankroll: A New Approach to Financing Feature Films OverviewThere is one golden rule in Hollywood: He who has the gold makes the rules. At the end of the day, your film can have every other element in place, yet if it lacks financing, its never going to happen. This book tells you how to get the gold.

The Vatican to Vegas: The History of Special Effects ReviewNot only students and scholars of the history of art, architecture, film, animation, western culture can rejoice at the publication of Norman Klein's epic and illuminating history of special effects illusionism, from the 17th century to the present. This book also promises delight to the common reader interested and engaged with the peculiar culture our times. As spectacle morphs to ever stranger forms, Klein offers an invaluable set of tools for analyzing, understanding, critiquing and surviving its massive leveling wash.
Klein's thesis, that large-scale special effects consistently function within a dialectic of political power and powerlessness, not only newly opens important influential fields for his spectacular research and interdisciplinary penetrations, but delights, in a rich and novelistic narrative, sparkling with brilliant characters (Ben Jonson, Mary Shelley, Edgar A. Poe, Charles Babbage, Jules Verne, George W. Bush) and bubbling over with cascading, interconnected information. The writer also lays bare his own private history, how special effects intervened in his Coney Island Youth and his Los Angeles adulthood, as a useful, literary casestudy. Special Effects emerges not simply as a hegemonic tool of repression but as a perplexing and evolving field of invention, influence and ambitious expression still as liable to charm as depress.
In particular, Klein's research on the history of technology was of particular use and interest to me. But the book serves happily, with its brilliantly organized index and "search engine" as a hand-book of effects history and theory in all disciplines. Klein crosses boudaries between history, theory, sociology and literature, offering important new realizations without ever overlooking, or short-shrifting the achievements of scholars dedicated to those particular fields. Vatican to Vegas, indeed, offers a brilliant example of the promise that interdisciplinary engagement offers writers of the future. I haven't read Klein before, but I'm telling you, I'll start now.
I won't start praising the pictures, though they're fascinating.
Buy this book and nail it to your desk or bedside table. In our current "Electronic Baroque" (a key Kleinian term), it grows more and more relevant every day.The Vatican to Vegas: The History of Special Effects Overview

Indie Producers Handbook : Creative Producing From A to Z ReviewI bought this book because it had cool art work and boy was I surprised. I was a student at NYU Tish School of the Arts majoring in Film Producing and this book taught me more about producing than the years I spent at NYU. I read the book from cover to cover in one sitting and then I decided that I would re-read a little each night before going to sleep. So I keep it at my bedside. Every night I learn more and more about the creative side of producing...and discovering that it is as much an art form as directing or writing. This book has really opened my eyes. I don't know who Myrl Schreibman is except that he is on the faculty of UCLA but I wish I had taken courses from him if he is anything like his book. This is a book that I will refer to alot. ThanksIndie Producers Handbook : Creative Producing From A to Z OverviewMyrl Schreibman has written a straighfoward, insightful, and articulate account of what it takes to make a successful feature film.

What I Really Want to Do Is Produce: Top Producers Talk Movies and Money ReviewVery informative read for those curious about producing. You get a sense of the producers personality through the interviews even to the point of sensing some of the pomp and ego that goes with operating at their level. These guys are tops of their field and don't mind sharing lessons learned and how they got where they are. One warning: the producers interviewed are disproportionately from England and Europe. The Americans interviewed are not the most cutting edge and look sort of boring by comparison. All the producers are tops of their field, but by focusing only on the very successful the Americans have typical career paths while the Brits are mavericks since it is much harder to make it there. I would have liked to see some of the good lesser known American producers. What I Really Want to Do Is Produce: Top Producers Talk Movies and Money OverviewWhat does a movie producer actually do for a living? Does producing amount toanything more than writing checks and smoking cigars? Helen de Winter, herself an intrepid young producer, explores the ins and outs ofa job that requires the combined skills of a wheeler-dealer, a diplomat, a stern but doting parent, and a clinical psychiatrist.

Archival Storytelling: A Filmmaker's Guide to Finding, Using, and Licensing Third-Party Visuals and Music ReviewThis book is an essential edition to any filmmaker's library. It is both a guide and a reference work. It offers listings of many archival sources that allow for access to and affordable use of all kinds of images and music. It offers a primer on copyright, covering relevant issues related to archival use such as public domain content, internet licensing, moral rights, most-favored-nations clauses, music synchronization and master use licenses, and fair use. It also covers frustrating and sticky issues that arise when acquiring materials such as inability to gain access to public domain content.
It engages the reader in an exploration that works for any of the creative arts--a discussion of ethical issues related to the use of other's content in a manner that is true to its original meaning, mission, context, and purpose.
And the book presents an inside/out perspective of the business of filmmaking and the complexities of its intellectual property issues. The authors accomplish this perspective through the use of interviews and roundtable discussions with well-established filmmakers, archivists, film researchers, insurance executives, and supervisors and managers of rights in the music industry. The work also contains a thought-provoking commentary on what copyright has become and of what it should be and why. This discussion impels filmmakers to actively engage in the current dialogue about a concept of copyright that would both protect their own and others' creations, secure current access to archival materials, and increase the amount of archival content that is accessible in the future.
Archival Storytelling: A Filmmaker's Guide to Finding, Using, and Licensing Third-Party Visuals and Music Overview
Archival Storytelling is an essential, pragmatic guide to one of the most challenging issues facing filmmakers today: the use of images and music that belong to someone else. Where do producers go for affordable stills and footage? How do filmmakers evaluate the historical value of archival materials? What do verite' producers need to know when documenting a world filled with rights-protected images and sounds? How do filmmakers protect their own creative efforts from infringement?

Filled with advice and insight from filmmakers, archivists, film researchers, music supervisors, intellectual property experts, insurance executives and others, Archival Storytelling defines key terms-copyright, fair use, public domain, orphan works and more-and challenges filmmakers to become not only archival users but also archival and copyright activists, ensuring their ongoing ability as creators to draw on the cultural materials that surround them.

Features conversations with industry leaders including Patricia Aufderheide, Hubert Best, Peter Jaszi, Jan Krawitz, Lawrence Lessig, Stanley Nelson, Rick Prelinger, Geoffrey C. Ward and many others.

Additional praise for Archival Storytelling: "I've been making historical documentaries for many years, yet I learned new things from this book. This is the definitive guide for archival research for documentary filmmakers. An invaluable resource." -Mark Jonathan Harris, Distinguished Professor, School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California, and writer/director, The Long Way Home and Into the Arms of Strangers

"One of the best-and most needed-[books] I have seen in a while..The challenge is to keep what is a fairly technical aspect of filmmaking interesting without compromising the quality and depth of information. The authors have done an exceptional job in this regard by the careful interweaving of interviews with researchers, filmmakers and legal experts through the factual material. There is the strong sense of being in the presence of experienced filmmakers and researchers who accept that while there are standard practices, archival use and intellectual property laws etc. are contingent fields in which each case must be assessed and dealt with on its merits." -Bruce Sheridan, Chair, Film & Video Department, Columbia College

"It's hard to imagine a more organized, comprehensive dissection of Byzantine material. The authors have produced a tremendous guide for all who use archival resources. Best of all, because of their effort, I believe more individuals will be able to access and properly utilize such material. This book will serve filmmakers and, in turn, the public for years to come." -Thomas Speicher, Producer, Pennsylvania College of Technology

"Not simply a 'how-to' manual, it is also a discussion of ideas, issues and history that creates an enjoyable text even when the subject matter becomes complicated. The real world examples, the roundtable discussions, and the exploration of ideas and issues surrounding the technical aspects are very welcome and well done." -Dustin Ogdin, Filmmaker, Spoke Digital Films

"The book properly advances the notion that 'films matter,' but this is countered by discussants with 'films cost money too.' Filmmakers may take decades to recoup, and licensing helps. It's an ongoing volley, the chapter engenders a road map through the split, the tension makes a good read...This authorative book belongs on every producer's shelf." -Loren S. Miller, Freelance Documentary and Dramatic Editor, Emerson College

* Nearly all filmmakers, at some point in their careers, will want to use third-party materials, or will be asked to license their own work to someone else. This book will show you how to do it (and stay on-time and within budget)* This book, by clarifying and defining such terms as fair use, copyright, intellectual property, and Creative Commons, can better prepare media makers to not only protect their own creative rights but to understand and respect those of others.* Additional resources are available on the authors' website: http://www.archivalstorytelling.com

The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers: A Legal Toolkit for Independent Producers ReviewEven though I've practiced law for many years outside of the entertainment law area, now that I have moved over into independent film production, I have found the legal issues involved in properly putting together a film to be daunting. If these entertainment law issues are hard for me, as an experienced attorney, I can imagine that they are dramatically more difficult to handle for everyone else. As a result, it is frankly tempting to instead focus on the artistic side of filmmaking so you can skip slogging through the legal quagmire, but you do so at your peril. This is true for a number of reasons, but most importantly, you are taking a huge risk because distributors won't touch a distribution deal for a film with serious legal problems. Fortunately, I've found that this book takes away much of the pain of learning about the legal issues in film, simply because it is so approachable. After reading this book, I really believe that even non-lawyers can quickly grasp the legal challenges of filmmaking. Best of all, the book skips typical "legalese" and instead offers easy to understand, quick references to the contracts, rights clearance and negotiating issues that everyone should understand. Not only did I like the book, but it really is unique, because there's very little else out there on this subject. It really should be on the desk of every producer. I couldn't recommend it more. The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers: A Legal Toolkit for Independent Producers Overview* You have an idea you want to pitch to a production company; how do you safeguard your concept?* There's a painting in the background of your independent film; is it necessary to clear the rights? * The screenplay you and a friend wrote gets optioned; how do you split the proceeds fairly?* How do you get a script to popular Hollywood actors or deal with their agents?Find quick answers to these and hundreds of other questions in The Pocket Lawyer for Film and Video, the next best thing to having an entertainment attorney at your beck and call. Written by a TV-producer-turned-entertainment-lawyer, this no-nonsense reference provides fast answers in plain English: no law degree required! The Pocket Lawyer is designed to help producers reduce legal costs by providing the vital information needed to make informed decisions on the legal aspects of film, video, and TV productions.Film and video production is a litigation lighting rod: actors get hurt, copyrights are infringed, and contracts are broken. Big-budget producers have lawyers on retainer, but many independent filmmakers are left legally exposed. Arm yourself with the practical advice in this book. You will not only avoid common pitfalls, but become empowered in your daily work. Too many otherwise competent producers turn over every aspect of the deal negotiations to their lawyers and agents. Planning the Low-Budget Film ReviewIf you are making your first legitimate movie where people besides your friends and family are depending on you not to screw up big time and you just searched Amazon for books on filmmaking and you need a no-nonsense step by step guide to help you through the behind the scenes process, this is the book for you!
I work with a comedy group in California, and we recently shot our first budgeted short film. As I am the most organized member of the group I was appointed the "Line Producer" and put in charge of making the whole thing come together on the back end. Coming from a theatre background, I knew what went into putting a stage performance together, but I was in the dark when it came to preparing for a film. After scouring Amazon (and a few other sites) this book seemed the most adequate to help me prepare for my job.
I've worked in film before, so a lot of the books I looked at about making a movie spend 2/3 of their volume explaining the difference between DV and Film and what a DP does, but I needed something that cut through that introductory fat, and would help prepare me for pre-production and detail exactly what went into pulling a film together.
This book is that book. It was my bible. It was glued to my side like Biff's Sports Almanac in Back to the Future 2.
Mr. Brown walks you through everything that goes into "making it happen." From breaking down the script into a functional shooting schedule to preparing an accurate budget to determing how far behind schedule you are to making sure there is a place for people to go to the bathroom, it's all in there. Additionally, the book even helped me to prepare for a lot of the basic legal and propreitary issues that we would encounter.
Brown also peppers the book with great anecdotes that help you avoid the pitfalls and roadblocks that he himself has encountered on large feature films like The Goonies. Yeah, The Goonies, you can't mess with someone who worked on The Goonies.
This book is essential. Bottom line. Read it. Love it. Use it.
Make well prepared movies.
Be a hero for your production.Planning the Low-Budget Film OverviewFinalist, 2007 Benjamin Franklin Awards, for Best New Voice Nonfiction and Professional/Technical

The Independent Filmmaker's Law and Business Guide: Financing, Shooting, and Distributing Independent and Digital Films ReviewFilmmaking is a leap of faith. A lot of people assume someone else will solve all the paperwork problems when distributions is locked. Unfortunately, if your paperwork is not in order and you can't furnish deliverables, you run the risk of losing the distro deal. Deliverables- what you provide to a distributor so they can do their job of marketing your movie- begin at the screenwriting stage.
If you are totally do it yourself and willing to make investments on yourself, why would you leave legalities to the VERY end when you have no choice (at least at the start you have the option of NOT hiring someone if they won't sign an actors release, avoiding a location if the owner won't sign. There's no "getting away" with anything.) This is stuff you hear about in film school, but it doesn't sink in until you experience the limitations caused by putting off the paperwork.
Author Jon Garon provides a legal book that is inclusive of all filmmakers, including no budget guerilla filmmakers. Even books that deal with guerilla filmmaking tend to gloss over the pertinent details that relate to Do-it-yourself-ers. He has some beautiful words of respect for guerilla filmmakers, too. That this is a law and business guide makes it a must have for anyone thinking about making a movie, be it for no money or millions.
This is the first book I've read that goes indepth as to the protections of a sole-proprietor vs. sole-Proprietor LLC (if your state allows it). I set up the LLC today, following his instructions. Took 10 minutes, online. Even went to the irs.gov for the employer id Number. He explains the risks of partnerships, and how you can unwittingly enter a partnership if you and your pals don't set forth an agreement at the start.
Financing is everyone's biggest complaint. This book explores the conventional and alternative financing models (investors vs. disposable income vs. debt financing/credit cards), and goes one better as to compare the risks and rewards of each. The golden quote is "I have never heard of anyone who has gambled her house on a film and won."
He even breaks down setting up your company and chain of command, running your company, working out deferrals and how those are paid back, and all sorts of issues you need to know but otherwise wouldn't think of. This book also includes info on contracts, actor and location releases, and music permissions.
Granted, this doesn't include a lot of boiler plate. But Mark Litwak has books for that. However, this book bests Litwak in the realm of detail and why certain provisions really matter. This book empowers the filmmaker to understand business and contracts, what to ask for, what to avoid, and so much more. This is a critical book to own. Particularly if you're broke. So get it!The Independent Filmmaker's Law and Business Guide: Financing, Shooting, and Distributing Independent and Digital Films OverviewToday's explosion of independent and digital filmmaking demands a brass-tacks guide to the business and legal aspects of the process. What fundraising options are available to a filmmaker? When should a filmmaker establish a corporation or limited liability company? How do screenwriters protect their work? What are a director's legal obligations to the producer, cast, and crew--and what are their obligations in return? And why must the filmmaker pay special attention to products and artwork that might appear in the background of a shot? This indispensable resource addresses the legal, financial, and organizational questions that an independent or guerrilla filmmaker must face, and the problems that will doom a project if left unanswered. It demystifies issues such as founding a film company, obtaining financing, preparing a budget, securing locations, shooting, granting screen credits, and distributing, exhibiting, and marketing a film. Newly updated and expanded, this second edition explores concepts such as executing a digital distribution strategy through the use of YouTube and "webisodes," the importance of international distribution, and legal issues particular to documentaries. Six handy appendixes provide sample contracts, copyright circulars, Documentary Filmmakers' Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use, studio contact information, and more.

The Visual Effects Producer: Understanding the Art and Business of VFX ReviewI have read this book -cover to cover- and must say that as a reference guide it is the most comprehensive, easy to read and understand book on the subject ever written! It covers everything from inception to going to the movie to see the project!
Susan and Chuck have done a fantastic job of taking difficult to understand concepts and breaking them apart into easy to understand and execute ideas. The illustrations and photos help tremendously and I am just awe-struck at how comprehensive this book is.
It will surely save the reader hours of time and tons of money that would have otherwise been ill-spent on set learning the lessons the hard way.
What is also amazing is how up to date this work is. It even covers Hoyt Yeatman's HDRI technology.
WOW! Hat's off to you two for taking this huge undertaking on, and then doing such a fantastic job with what could have been a yawn. I wish we had had this book 20 years ago!!!

The Art of Film Funding: Alternative Financing Concepts ReviewI bought this book eager to learn some of the "alternative" financing concepts based on the glowing reviews. I'm about to mount a low budget feature, and I thought the book might provide good info on investment schemes and methods of raising money and other non-monetary support for a fictional project. However, this book is aimed at the non-profit and/or documentary filmmaker with only cursory references to fictional feature (or short) projects. I really learned nothing new from this title and I feel the description here is misleading. I suggest those of you looking for insight on funding for-profit films look elsewhere. If you are wanting to shoot a documentary then this book could be very helpful. My two cents worth. The Art of Film Funding: Alternative Financing Concepts OverviewThis book is your reference guide for creating the perfect pitch, inspiring your winning application, finding and connecting with funding organizations, making a successful "ask," and landing the money to make your film.
