Writing the Thriller Film: The Terror Within (Michael Wiese Productions) ReviewI bought this book to help me with my current script. I thought I was writing a thriller, but after reading it, I have discovered that I am really writing a horror story! At last, someone has finally dissected what a thriller IS and ISN'T. I need to see the RULES, and they are all here. Now I understand the genre. Mr. Hicks has done an outstanding job by explaining what it is and how to do it. His screenplay excerpts are excellent. I'm going to rent "Breakdown" this weekend and study the form.Writing the Thriller Film: The Terror Within (Michael Wiese Productions) OverviewDiscover the secrets of writing the thriller film in this book which will have your audiences on the edge of their seats.

Pitching Hollywood: How to Sell Your TV and Movie Ideas ReviewThis book has a lot of information on concepts and treatments. It does not go into the details of the technique of a pitch. It is very encouraging, but with reagrds to the actual pitch they wrote,"the energy of a pitch can't be written" or something to that effect. I would have appreciated an outline or something. They provide general info like be on time, make it brief, etc... Wow, insightful!Pitching Hollywood: How to Sell Your TV and Movie Ideas OverviewTwo successful movie and TV producers provide the reader with the tools needed to create, develop, and sell ideas to Hollywood. Producers Jonathan Koch ("Beyond the Glory") and Robert Kosberg (Deep Blue Sea) are known as the "Kings of Pitch." They currently have more than a dozen projects in development at major studios, including projects with Josh Lucas, Tobey Maguire, and Katherine Heigl.

Script: A Writer's Guide to the Hollywood Jungle ReviewI found this book to be very encouraging for a new screen writer like myself. I like the part where the author says there are no failures in Hollywood for writers, but they just give up. This is a great resource book that has the "whose who" of places a screen writer can get recognition. It isn't an instructional book on how to write screenplays, but where to promote one's script once it is completed and ready to sell or compete in a screenplay contest. The author also tells what kind of scripts make it to the box office and what's the kind of audience that producers want to see the scripts attract for a writer needs to know what kind of scripts sell and what doesn't. This book gives direction on where to take one's script.Script: A Writer's Guide to the Hollywood Jungle OverviewThe first, authentic survival guide for writers in Hollywood walks you through the world of developing scripts for major motion pictures and television. It's packed with invaluable insight into how the studio system and the networks function and how the producers and executives think, from a veteran insider's POV. This revised and expanded second edition also includes insight into new media, the transmedia storytelling model and includes a list of the best writing workshops and script contests in Hollywood. This book is a "must have" field manual for screenwriters and writer-producers of film and television.

Making the Transformational Moment in Film: Unleashing the Power of the Image (with the films of Vincent Ward) ReviewI'm probably Vincent Ward's biggest fan. At least I've never met a bigger fan. I have all his movies (including his student films) and all the memorabilia for all of this movies (posters, press kits, etc.)
Boy, was I looking forward to this book, as there currently exist, as far as I know, no books about Vincent Ward, other than the one he wrote himself: Edge of the earth: Stories and images from the antipodes.
I was hoping for a lot of inside information on Ward's life, his philosophy, and the circumstances behind many of his films.
There is some of that, but for the most part this book is not really about Vincent Ward's films as a whole. It's a film book, written for film students and directors. It lays out the cinematography of certain scenes and how they handle emotional progression, etc. The author also has a thesis (think of the title): that the films of Vincent Ward can be profitably studied for how they handle filmic moments where there is a turnaround, something the author opines that Ward handles well.
Maybe so, but this isn't what I was interested in. It's a lot of technical talk. What I was looking for was more of an appreciation of Ward's life and his films, and the story behind that. As I say, there was precious little of that, and quite a lot of pretentious theorizing about visual theory.Making the Transformational Moment in Film: Unleashing the Power of the Image (with the films of Vincent Ward) OverviewThis book is a bold exploration that gets under the skin of the filmmaking process and shows how audiences can be moved through deeply transformational uses of the medium. You'll learn how the raw materials of filmmaking are brought together so that the transformation happens. Key moments in films from Vincent Ward and others are used as examples, examining how the moment is staged, how visual composition is used, how narrative is constructed, how color, light and music are brought together, and how to get inside characters that we really care about. Roger Ebert describes Vincent Ward as a "true visionary." Here, the sources of Ward's filmmaking vision are revealed, offering a unique view of the creative process in film.

Writing Television Comedy ReviewHaving written professionally for thirty-plus years, I've read dozens of books on "how to write." They range from the sublime to the ridiculous, and only a relative few have been -- and continue to be -- helpful. Jerry Rannow's delightful Writing Television Comedy is a welcome addition to my bookshelf, not because I'm interested in writing TV comedy but because it helps me WRITE -- period! While the book does target the aspiring sitcom writer, it also offers valuable tips and inspiration for ALL writers.
I often struggle with so-called writer's block, and Rannow's book provides me with several different techniques for breaking through it. The chapter entitled Managing The Story Muscle is particularly helpful, but I can open the book almost at random and find a jump-start to get me going. Sometime's it's just a reminder, like: "So-called writer's block is simply FEAR, but when you sit down and concentrate and focus on the story at hand, you erase that fear." And sometimes I discover that the problem was in my plot, or a character wasn't ringing true.
The book also reminds me of ways to look for the humorous aspects of life, because I frequently use humor in my own writing: in radio and TV spots, print ads, newspaper articles, and the novel I'm currently completing. So if you're already a paid professional or still a wannabe writer, I highly recommend Jerry Rannow's book. It really IS well worth the price, and a whole lot more!Writing Television Comedy OverviewVeteran television writer/producer Jerry Rannow gives aspiring and experienced comedy writers a humorous and eye-opening guide to conceiving, writing, and marketing a winning TV sitcom. Drawing on more than twenty-five years' experience, he tells how to construct a story outline, structure and format scripts, develop character and dialogue, pitch to producers, collaborate with other writers, and work with network and studio executives, producers, directors, agents, writers, and stars. Full of laughs and profitable tips for making a living in the business, this book is an invaluable tool for any writer who wants to break into TV comedy.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Screenwriting, 3rd Edition Review"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Screenwriting" is a phenomenal overview of the increasingly popular field of screenwriting, and it is written with care, compassion, and expertise by Skip Press. And the Best Screenplay Goes to...Learning from the Winners - Sideways, Shakespeare in Love, Crash ReviewLinda Seger, screenwriting guru and author of the seminal Making A Good Script Great, gives you a nice head start on the process in her latest book And The Best Screenplay Goes To..., which examines in detail the biology of three Oscar-winning scripts: Sideways, Shakespeare In Love, and Crash.
Each film is subjected to a minute analysis, broken down into specific categories relevant to the particular story involved. The analysis is followed by 10 study questions to get you thinking. Then you'll find interviews with each of writers of the scripts, and finally, there's a story beats breakdown on each, with setups, turning points, and climaxes all clearly noted.
The real strength of this book is how each movie is investigated in a different way. They're such different movies, and they present different challenges to the analyst. Seger takes all this into account, and doesn't try to cookie-cutter them with any sort of canned metrics. Each gets a custom treatment, keyed to the movie's specific personality.
Screenwriters will get their fill of tips and gambits here, not only from Seger but from the writers themselves, from their discussions of their own processes. You'll get lots of ideas on your approach to story and how to go about realizing your vision.
This book can also be read as work of critical analysis with background included...appealing to movie lovers everywhere! And the Best Screenplay Goes to...Learning from the Winners - Sideways, Shakespeare in Love, Crash OverviewThis book provides a CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) approach to Academy Award-winning screenplays, giving you the nitty gritty details of how an Academy Award script was created.

How to Write a Selling Screenplay ReviewThere are so many books on screenwriting already in existence that the real question any reviewer must address when another one comes along is: if you could only afford to buy one of them, why should you buy this one and save the others for any book tokens you might receive at Christmas? The title of this review forms the basis of my answer to that question.
Chris Keane has made his living as a professional writer for decades, focusing mostly on novels and screenplays. His success has brought him many offers of teaching posts, and indeed, he spends a considerable part of each year teaching at Emerson, where he is an Associate Professor, and at the International Film and Television Workshops in Maine. All this makes him actuely aware of the nitty-gritty needs of both the fledgling screenwriter and the writer who has been over the course more than once, but who needs to re-learn key lessons. These lessons are so key that for much of the first part of the book, one feels like one is directing a question and answer session, rather than having questions answered in which one might possibly be interested. From the question of work habits to how to generate ideas, and what to do with them once you have them, through to characterisation, dialogue, and the scene as the nucleus of the screenplay, Keane is both judicious and generous with his hard-won wisdom.
The second half of the book puts theory into practice. It consists of the full text of Keane's screenplay 'The Crossing', with honest, detached critical commentary at the end of each scene or section. This allows the reader to see exactly what Keane is talking about in the first half of the book, to experience the emotion that his own work needs to generate, to feel for the characters, and then, with Keane's assistance, to stop and reflect on why he feels as he does. In the hands of a writer with a bigger ego but less talent, this method might well have had the reader reaching for the sick bag after only a few pages, but it works wonderfully here, and it seems to me that anyone wishing a career in screenwriting could not wish for clearer, more genuine exemplification.
A final point on this structural feature of Keane's indispensable book. Something else the inclusion of this constantly optioned but not yet produced screenplay teaches the would-be screenwriter is how tough his desired career can be, that he could write a screenplay as good as Keane's and still wait a long, long time to see it on the big screen, if indeed he ever does.
Other books on screenwriting claim to 'make it easy'. Keane's puts the emphasis exactly where it should be: on the work. How to Write a Selling Screenplay OverviewChristopher Keane has spent 20 years in the business, learning the truths--and the tricks--of writing a selling screenplay. In How to Write a Selling Screenplay, he takes writers through the entire process, from developing a story to finding the best agent. Using an annotated version of an often-optioned screenplay of his own, and citing examples from movies ranging from Casablanca and Lethal Weapon to Sling Blade and The English Patient, he discusses how to create three-dimensional characters, find a compelling story, build an airtight plot structure, fine-tune dialogue, and much more. Keane's tips on the difference between writing for film and television, as well as his advice on dealing with Hollywood movers and shakers, make this an essential companion for people writing their first--or their fortieth--screenplay.

Writing the TV Drama Series: How to Succeed as a Professional Writer in TV ReviewThere have been quite a few screenwriting manuals focussing on the sitcom, but drama series haven't yet been singled out for an in-depth examination. And about time too, because much of the best audiovisual work today is done on television. Pamela Douglas, a highly experienced writer for television, attempts to fill the gap with the current volume.
Douglas starts out by listing the specific qualities of television drama (episodic characterization, long narrative and collaboration) and dispelling some myths about the medium. She then goes into an extensive description of the (American) writing system, and then delves into writing specifics. Douglas provides a four-act grid to fill in with the beats of your story, and also explains how to layer A, B and C stories. She analyzes two hefty script excerpts from NYPD Blue in great detail, an excellent teaching method which makes the practical application of the theory very clear. Subsequent chapters focus on writing your own episode and breaking in. Each chapter is followed by an interview with top writers (Steven Bochco, David Milch etc.), and Douglas rounds off by interviewing a group of her students twice, first after graduation and then several years later, to see how their careers turned out. It's not all good news.
This is a well-written, serious look at television drama, and it provides a lot of necessary insider information for the writer looking to break in.
The second edition of the book updates the info to early 2007, and covers series like Lost, Heroes, Battlstar Galactica and the like. Ms. Douglas also reveals new 'tricks of the trade' such as ABC's mandatory six-act structure. If you don't have the book yet and you're serious about writing for television - get it NOW. If you already have the first edition, the new material is definitely good enough to warrant a new purchase.Writing the TV Drama Series: How to Succeed as a Professional Writer in TV OverviewThis 2nd edition of Douglas's hit book gives the latest inside scoop on obtaining success in this highly competitive industry. This second edition takes readers inside Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Battlestar Gallactica, and CSI:Miami; as well as the great shows dovered in the first edition.

Write to TV: Out of Your Head and onto the Screen ReviewThis book gives you what you need in order to make it in the TV world and it's a great, easy read. I kept wanting to turn the page, just like a TV script, to get to the next section. I've read many books about writing scripts, but this one is going on the reference shelf, right next to my copy of The Elements of Style. It's that special.
What is so perfect about this book, is not only is the information well organized, but it's from someone who has been there. She worked hard to break into the TV industry and her journey resembles the one I am currently going through. It's nice to know that I'm not alone and that someone from the East Coast, with no prior contacts, can make it as a TV writer. I always trust people who actually made it over "Gurus" who teach, but can't do.
If you're serious about being a TV writer, pick this book up. It's a "TV Writing Class" in book form.Write to TV: Out of Your Head and onto the Screen Overview

Becoming Ray Bradbury ReviewThis biography is the first in three volumes. It details Ray Bradbury's early life and who influenced and mentored him, both in the science fiction and fantasy realm as well the literary, philosophical and psychological sources who shaped his thinking and aesthetics. As other reviews noted, Dr. Eller's biography bridges the scholarly insights and detailed information in one of the most readable books available. Where some scholars mire the reader down, this one does not. Dr. Eller understands that his audience is both scholars and fans and is able to address the needs and concerns of both without compromising the integrity of his work. For those interested, especially in the early shaping of Bradbury, Dr. Eller has some previously unpublished photographs of Bradbury in group shots with other early pioneers of the science fiction and fantasy, including one which Robert Heinlein.
For more on this particular work, see this review: [...]
And for more on Dr. Eller, you might want to visit the Center for Ray Bradbury studies' site:
[...]Becoming Ray Bradbury OverviewBecoming Ray Bradbury chronicles the making of an iconic American writer by exploring Ray Bradbury's childhood and early years of his long life in fiction, film, television, radio, and theater. Jonathan R. Eller measures the impact of the authors, artists, illustrators, and filmmakers who stimulated Bradbury's imagination throughout his first three decades. Unprecedented access to Bradbury's personal papers and other private collections provides insight into his emerging talent through his unpublished correspondence, his rare but often insightful notes on writing, and his interactions with those who mentored him during those early years.

Beginning with his childhood in Waukegan, Illinois, and Los Angeles, this biography follows Bradbury's development from avid reader to maturing author, making a living writing for pulp magazines. Eller illuminates the sources of Bradbury's growing interest in the human mind, the human condition, and the ambiguities of life and death--themes that became increasingly apparent in his early fiction. Bradbury's correspondence documents his frustrating encounters with the major trade publishing houses and his earliest unpublished reflections on the nature of authorship. Eller traces the sources of Bradbury's very conscious decisions, following the sudden success of The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man, to voice controversial political statements in his fiction, and he highlights the private motivations behind the burst of creative energy that transformed his novella "The Fireman" into the classic novel Fahrenheit 451.

Becoming Ray Bradbury reveals Bradbury's emotional world as it matured through his explorations of cinema and art, his interactions with agents and editors, his reading discoveries, and the invaluable reading suggestions of older writers. These largely unexplored elements of his life pave the way to a deeper understanding of his more public achievements, providing a biography of the mind, the story of Bradbury's self-education and the emerging sense of authorship at the heart of his boundless creativity.

Real Screenwriting: Strategies and Stories from the Trenches ReviewThe first thing you will notice about Ron Suppa's book "Real Screenwriting" is that it is heavy. One person can carry it, but it is 400 pages. And it is not just heavy because of the page count. This book is heavy with valuable, useful material, thoughtfully presented.
This is not for dilettantes. If you are looking for short cuts to that first big spec sale, buy one of those cute, little, entertaining paperbacks. (Or contact me. I probably have all of them on my shelf.) This is a book for people serious about learning the craft. It is also entertaining. His "From the Trenches" sections are both fun and informative, stories from someone who was, and is, in the middle of the Hollywood scene.
But the really interesting thing for me about Ron Suppa's book is how slowly and carefully I have been working through it. In my prior reading on scriptwriting, I would finish the books very quickly and I think it was because there just wasn't that much value in these books. It was either old and rehashed material or information that was mostly self-explanatory. I usually felt I was finishing the books without coming away with the help that I really needed.
With Mr. Suppa's new book, I notice how often I reread a sentence or paragraph and then think about how it might apply to my script. I don't recall ever doing that with any other scriptwriting books. So many of his statements are absolute pearls of useful information. Here's just one example out of the thousands in the book: "Screenplays are goal-oriented. The goal must be specific, clearly identifiable, as crucial to your character as life and death, and not subject to compromise. And yet, it is not the goal itself but the character's journey toward the goal that matters most." Great stuff! And worth taking a moment to think about.
If, when you finish this book, you want to know more about scriptwriting, read the book again. I am quite certain that you will learn about as much the second time around -- this book is loaded! I am not suggesting that this book "adds to the library of existing books on scriptwriting." I think you will find, as I did, that it replaces them. Rick SmithReal Screenwriting: Strategies and Stories from the Trenches OverviewAs news of screenwriters getting seven-figure deals leaks to the masses, it's no wonder hundreds of aspiring screenwriters come to Hollywood each day for a chance at easy money and glory. However, the reality is that writing and selling a screenplay is far easier said than done and requires that the author not only write a cohesive and complete script (and not just have an idea for a movie), but that he also have the knowledge of the filmmaking process and industry necessary to market and sell the screenplay. Real Screenwriting: Strategies and Stories from the Trenches provides the real deal on the art, craft, business and everyday life of a screenwriter. Written by a former entertainment lawyer turned successful Hollywood film producer and produced screenwriter, and gleaned from the author's popular screenwriting seminars at UCLA Extension school, this book provides aspiring writers with the inspiration and tools they need to get their stories on the page, and eventually onto the screen. Real Screenwriting also presents personal "in the trenches" anecdotes, invaluable insider tips and strategies, plus the helpful Hollywood survival skills every screenwriter needs to write a marketable screenplay, network himself, get an agent, protect his work, and develop a writing career.

Cases to Accompany Contemporary Strategy Analysis ReviewI use Cases in Contemporary Strategy Analysis in my Capstone course (final course) for my MBA graduate students. It provides them with excellent insight into corporate decision making and strategic planning processes. The case studies are interesting and rich for discussion. My only criticism is the world of business is so fast paced. I would have like to see an internet site or CD ROM with more current information on the companies. Many of the organizational case studies were dated 1998. A myriad of financial, economic, marketing, and strategic changes occurred since the printing of the text. Overall, I recommend the book for textbook use.Cases to Accompany Contemporary Strategy Analysis OverviewThis popular casebook is now available in a more compact and updated edition. In response to requests from instructors and students for cases that require less reading time, all the cases are shorter than those in previous editions. Riding the Alligator: Strategies for a Career in Screenplay Writing (and not getting eaten) ReviewAs a rule of thumb, I generally avoid reading screenwriting books because they either make me feel anxious or feel like I'm somehow not a "true writer" because I don't follow the specific rules of screenwriting that the author has prescribed. So it was with great pleasure that when I read Pen Densham's RIDING THE ALLIGATOR, I felt quite the opposite.
This book is best described as "Screenwriting Spirituality" giving you the building blocks to create a career as a screenwriter and survive all the highs and lows that will inevitably come over that career. It is written in a very relaxed manner that was both informative and encouraging. Even as a seasoned writer, I felt it an incredibly worthwhile read, because it reaffirmed many of my own feelings and attitudes on the business as well as offered insightful takes on aspects I hadn't even considered.
If you are serious about the craft of screenwriting and/or just want to hear some uplifting and supportive advice from someone like Pen Densham who has lived it day to day, do yourself a favor and add this to your cart and go directly to "express check out".Riding the Alligator: Strategies for a Career in Screenplay Writing (and not getting eaten) OverviewThe first artist-friendly screenwriting overview and guide to success by a Hollywood insider whose films and TV series have grossed more than a billion dollars.Pen Densham is your own, warm, funny, personal mentor as you read this book that has garnered amazing responses from both the Hollywood and academic communities. Actress Robin Wright says: It is like getting a UC screenwriting course for under $30!!!. Riding the Alligator is different from many other screenwriting books in that it takes a non-dogmatic approach to finding your own personal creative process, and shares Pen s best kept secrets for selling your creations and yourself.Pen draws from his own breakthroughs and shares his inspiring philosophy on finding a personal well of creativity from your inner voice, to overcoming the many challenges in a unique business, managing stress, the real secrets to selling your work, finding the right agent and being true to one's nature to create a lasting and passion filled career. The book is hailed by Hollywood luminaries like Ron Howard, Paul Haggis, Jeff Bridges, Morgan Freeman and Robin Wright, as well as heads of major motion picture studios and academics from top film schools including USC, UCLA, NYU and AFI.Also included are short, personal essays by A-List Hollywood scripters such as Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang), Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Eric Roth (Forrest Gump), Robin Swicord (Memoirs of a Geisha), Ron Shelton (White Men Can't Jump), Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island), Todd Robinson (White Squall), Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center), Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) and more. Tales from the Script: 50 Hollywood Screenwriters Share Their Stories ReviewI loved this book even though I'm not a screenwriter. I picked it up because I'm a movie buff who loves behind-the-scenes stories. I never knew how badly screenwriters are treated, and I never knew how important screenplays are. But after reading this incredibly entertaining book, I feel like I just got to know all of the writers included. They're a fun bunch of people, they've seen everything there is to see in Hollywood, and their stories are just as compelling as the movies they write!
The photos of the writers make it feel like they're sitting right in front of me, and the extra interviews at the end of every chapter are really cool -- it's great to get the viewpoints of a development executive, a movie director, a guy who runs a script contest, etc. Thanks to "Tales from the Script," I have a new appreciation for how hard it is to write a movie, and I loved hearing all the stories about the making of "Bull Durham," "Butch Cassidy," "X-Men," "War of the Worlds," "The Mist," and so many others.
I know friends who write scripts, and I'm going to recommend this book to all of them, but it's not just for screenwriters. If you love movies, you'll enjoy this book as much as I did! Oh, and I can't wait to see the "Tales from the Script" movie when it comes out on DVD!Tales from the Script: 50 Hollywood Screenwriters Share Their Stories Overview

Psychology for Screenwriters ReviewFor any writer struggling to create powerful and believable characters, it is imperative that you understand the psychological aspects of why people do the things they do, why they behave in the ways they choose to, and what inner drives propel them towards potential greatness. The hero's journey talked about in myth and story has a structure based upon archetypes, themes and patters of human behavior that any writer can come to master when creating the perfect screenplay, and "Psychology For Screenwriters: Building Conflict in Your Script" by screenwriter and Assistant Professor of Psychology William Indick is a priceless guidebook for navigating the interior of the mind.
Written for screenwriters, with tons of examples of movies current and past that clarify the concepts, this book can also serve as an indespensable guide for writers of novels, who also grapple with making their characters believable, truthful and effective. Using Freudian psychology as well as the teachings of Carl Jung, Alfred Adler and the late, great mythologist Joseph Campbell, the author takes us on a highly detailed journey into the hero's journey itself, breaking apart each step of character development and providing a correlating psychological theme that underlies the motivations and actions of human beings. By doing this, the writer can absorb on a subconscious level what they then hope to realize in their work on a consious level - fully rounded, deeply real characters experiencing things that the audience can cheer for, relate to and feel authenticated by.
The book, which is thick and wordy and almost like a textbook, so filled with information is it, covers every aspect of human behavior and motivation, from psychosexuality to the conflict of identity crisis, from the hero's journey and its trials and pitfalls, to the many archetypes of persona and plot, to the different aspects of the heroine's journey, the existential conflict, the battle of ego and id, neurosis and narcissism, the defense mechanisms of the crafty ego, sibling rivalry, good versus evil, finding the inner animus, inferiority complexes, the power and metaphor of dreams and so very much more. In fact, reading this book can be somewhat intimidating for a writer who simply wants to "create better characters" and one can easily get bogged down in detail. But all that psychological stuff is truly worth it, because the end result is a greater understanding of human nature, which translates into writing that is more authentic, more profound, and more emotionally satisfying.
What works really well in this book are the many examples of how these aspects of personality show up in films most of us have seen before. This really allows the author to drive home his points and clarify his concepts in a way we call can understand - by relating it to what we've already experienced on the big screen. Even better are the many helpful sidebars, chapter summary points and insightful exercises all geared towards making sure that the writer, and reader, truly understands the material before closing the book and beginning to write.
I found this book to be a highly recommended "must-have" for writers serious about doing more than just popping out a commercial, story-driven script for a quick sale (ha-ha). This manual for serious character and story development is for those writers who truly want to create memorable people and plotlines that will connect with and move their audiences. One important suggestion, though. There is so much ground covered in this book that you might feel crippled by it when you are ready to write. Instead, read it, absorb the material, then set it aside long enough for it to sink into your psyche.
Then sit down and write, and watch your characters and your story take on a powerful and profoundly effective life of their own. Not only will you have learned more about what makes your characters tick, you will have learned a thing or two about yourself, which is really what writing is all about - expressing the self.Psychology for Screenwriters OverviewScreenwriters must understand human behavior to make their stories come alive. This book clearly describes theories of personality and psychoanalysis with simple guidelines, thought provoking exercises, vivid film images and hundreds of examples from classic movies.

The Moral Premise: Harnessing Virtue & Vice for Box Office Success ReviewI remember this like it was yesterday: I read a letter to the editors in regards to the film "The Deer Hunter." The person wrote: "I can't understand how a film that glorifies violence and beer drinking and hunting can win Best Picture." This person was, obviously, looking at the over all story - not at what the movie was REALLY about which is a film about love and sacrifice and, literally, laying one's life down for a friend. Far more depth than "beer drinking and hunting."
What are we talking about? The "subtext" of a film. What the film is REALLY about. "The Incredibles?" What's the movie about? "It's about a family of superheroes that does battle against an evil villain and saves the world!" What's it REALLY about: It's about love, the power of family, finding your identity, making sacrifices and doing what is right against all obstacles."
In the book: "The Moral Premise" author Stanley D. Williams, Ph.D. takes the concept of subtext and creates a layer of subtext under it. It almost asks: "What's the SUBTEXT really about?" And if you come up with the answer, then you have the Moral Premise.
The Moral Premise can be described easily as saying: "Evil actions equal failure, Good actions equal success" (depending on the script you are writing). That's a poor example of what the author creates. For example, Dr. Williams's Moral Premise for "Bruce Almighty" is:
Expecting a Miracle Leads to Frustration; but
Being a Miracle Leads to Peace
By digesting a number of films, including "The Incredibles," "Bruce Almighty," "An Officer and a Gentleman" and, to a greater extent, "Braveheart" - he breaks down the Moral Premise and then shows how those films adhered to the premise as stated. It is within the process of dealing with that Moral Premise and the fact that the characters first reject, return to, and live out, that Moral Premise that not only gives the film depth but also, in turn, creates Box Office Success (see full title of the book above).
Dr. Williams goes into extreme detail when it comes to figuring out that Moral Premise and then applying it to your story taking you first through chapters describing the Moral Premise and then taking you through steps giving you a step-by-step of applying the Moral Premise to your script.
The initial chapters, with titles like: "The Moral Premise in Modern Writing Guides" and "Structure of the Moral Premise" give you a fully detailed analysis of the subject (including footnotes) and then the chapters end with exercises to give you a better understanding of what was discussed.
The step-by-step chapters encourage you to apply what you've learned with your own script. Where the previous chapters felt, in some ways, like a class room - the steps feel more like you have been let loose on the world to use the knowledge that you have learned.
I will warn you: This is a weighty book - not in terms of size - but in concept. I found myself re-reading sentences to get a better grasp on what he was saying (often times thinking in my head how to apply what I was reading to my current story - and not paying attention to what I was reading). I am still not sure that I fully have the concept - but I do see how I can use some of the tools he has given me to add more depth to my current script - to give my characters more of a purpose, more of a reality, more of a "Moral Premise."
Where I felt the book could have improved was by providing BAD examples. We know there are a lot of terrible films out there that had no box office success - how did their lack of Moral Premise add to that failure? And how could have ADDING a Moral Premise possibly pull the film out of studio killing tailspin. Is there a Moral Premise in "Catwoman?" What about "Basic Instinct II?" But then there's the rub, I bet with both "Catwoman" and "Basic Instinct II" if you looked for a Moral Premise you could probably find one - so the movies sucked by either NOT focusing on the Moral Premise or they just sucked on a whole.
Another suggestion that Dr. Williams makes is by going through your characters, figuring out the arcs and the plot points and the dramatic (or comedic) beats BEFORE you put pen to paper (or fingertips to keyboards). He suggests getting out 3x5 cards (or using a computer program) to plot these out and arrange them in a way that reinforces the Moral Premise. As helpful as this sounds - and I'm sure it is VERY helpful - most of my students want to jump right in and start writing their script and not think about these nuances and details (as important as they are). So if you want to dive right into your screenplay - go ahead - but you might need to do some backtracking.
Stan Williams does an outstanding job of cutting through what you think your screenplay is about and getting to the heart of what your screenplay is REALLY about. A must read for any screenwriter.
The Moral Premise: Harnessing Virtue & Vice for Box Office Success OverviewThe Moral Premise reveals the foundational concept at the heart of all storytelling and successful box office movies. In concrete terms it explains how you can create your own success and, in the process, entertain, delight, challenge, and uplift this generation and the ones to come.
