Stanley Kubrick: A Biography ReviewI found Baxter's book an enjoyable read, lively and somewhat informative, though apparently not the work of awesome scholarship that Lubrutto's book is. I haven't read that tome yet, but will soon, fascinated as I am by all things Kubrick. I didn't have the reaction that others have had concerning Baxter's feelings toward Kubrick. As far as I could tell, he seemed to have an appropriate level of respect. Baxter is obviously not a film scholar or someone too well versed in the technical side of filmmaking, but he keeps the book moving along briskly. This certainly a good start-up for someone new to Kubrick's films.Stanley Kubrick: A Biography OverviewFor decades, the films of Stanley Kubrick have staked out a claim at the core of the cultural landscape. In the 1950s he was one of the few American filmmakers, with Paths of Glory, to achieve the gravitas of European cinema. To 1960s audiences he was the man who made Dr. Strangelove, the influential anti-war movie, and the counterculture favorite 2001: A Space Odyssey. In the 1970s he created his hymn to urban violence, A Clockwork Orange, and in the 1980s distilled the nature of private madness and collective insanity in The Shining and Full Metal Jacket.
Yet little is still known of the man and the influence exerted by his private life on his public art. Born in the Bronx, Kubrick has lived since 1961 in seclusion in rural England. From in-depth interviews with a range of people who have known the man best, from his childhood to the present, John Baxter has extracted the most complete account available of Kubrick's life: the conflicts with partners and stars, the failure to make Napoleon, the failed marriages and broken friendships, the use and abuse of writers and other creative collaborators.
Kubrick emerges from this detailed and complex telling as a man both sensitive and ruthless, petulant and generous: a man who adulates reason but whose films reflect the wildest excesses of passion and who, above all, has dared to live life on his terms, whatever the price.

Field of Dreams/Laser ReviewHi...
this is a great movie..great transfer and great extra features...commentary, roundtable with hall of fame baseball players...bravo special ...current day update on the actual field of dreams location....BUT , and its a big one...it does NOT contain the fabulous hour long making of documentary from the initial release!!! as well as many of the other bonus features....
so.....if you are a fan , you will most likely want both editions...
I don't understand why they couldn't have included the bonus features from the first "collectors" edition to make this the definitive issue...but Like ON GOLDEN POND ...you get a newer edition with great extras which don't duplicate the original....
anyway...just thought I'd warn fans out there who are thinking of "trading up" for the new edition...Field of Dreams/Laser Overview

Max Ophuls in the Hollywood Studios ReviewUnlike some of the other books about Ophuls, Bacher's book goes into what lay behind some of Ophuls' directorial decisions, the personalities of producers, editors, stars, etc. It is the book of scholarship that needs to be written about every director worth studying. This is the book you read BEFORE you start to consider what Ophuls is trying to communicate, what the meaning is of Ophuls films. The only drawback of the book is that it only goes into detail about Ophuls' four American films!
The biggest surprise was that the book was a pleasure to read. The personalities presented are real people. It is, despite the scholarly intention of the book, very fast reading. I found it too fast.... I will have to go back and read it again in order to write my own paper on Ophuls films!
MIchael Ian ChaplanMax Ophuls in the Hollywood Studios OverviewMax Ophuls, who is consideredone of the greatest film directors of all time, has long been seen as an "auteur"--the artist in complete control of his work. Lutz Bacher's examination of his American career gives us a unique perspective on the struggle on the workings of the Hollywood system and the struggle of a visionary to function within it. He thus establishes clear connections between the production contexts of Ophuls's American films and their idiosyncratic style.Drawing on documents in many archives and on interviews with more than sixty of Ophuls's contemporaries, Bacher traces the European director's struggle to find a niche in the U.S. film industry. He describes how Ophuls ran the gamut from ghost writing to substitute directing, to a debilitating association with Preston Sturges and Howard Hughes, to making four films--Letter from and Unknown Woman and Caught among them--in thirty months, and then returning to Europe with a runaway production that was to have starred Greta Garbo. Throughout, Bacher demonstrates that Ophuls's bending of conventional Hollywood methods to his own will through compromise and subversion allowed him to achieve a style that was both uniquely American and a point of departure from his later work. A rare synthesis of production history, stylistic analysis, and biography, this book is essential reading for serious film scholars and fans of the director's work.

Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies ReviewHere's a real treat for fans of science fiction movies. Gary Gerani's TOP 100 SCI-FI MOVIES is an entertaining, insightful and well-illustrated guide to great science fiction films of the past 80 years. To paraphrase director John Carpenter, who wrote the Introduction to Gerani's book, "For movie addicts, it doesn't get much better than this." Here, here.
In reverse order, Gerani counts down "cinema's most significant science fiction endeavors." Number 100 is EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS. You'll have to read the book to find out #1! Each film gets at least a full-page spread. Many get two pages; a very few get four. After listing 'Who Made It' production details, Gerani gives a 'What It's About' plot summary followed by a lengthy 'Why It's Important' discussion on the film and its impact. Likewise, each film is illustrated by at least one or more photographs and/or movie poster artwork. Some titles rate more illustrations. THEM, for example, has the original color movie poster and eight b&w production stills. 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA features a color poster and nine color stills.
Paging through TOP 100 SCI-FI MOVIES is akin to taking a walk down memory lane. The films covered include INVADERS FROM MARS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, MATRIX, GODZILLA, STAR TREK II, VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, ON THE BEACH, ALIENS, FORBIDDEN PLANET, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, METROPOLIS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, FANTASTIC VOYAGE, FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, THE FLY, ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS, DARK STAR, THE CONQUEST OF SPACE and many others. Gerani's affectionate yet critical commentary makes for entertaining reading.
In short, Science Fiction Film buffs should pick up a copy of Gerani's book. It's a fun, thought-provoking guided tour through many fondly-remembered cinematic treats. Highly recommended.Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies OverviewFantastic Press strikes again with its second trade paperback offering, this time exploring the ultra-fanciful universe of spaceships, exotic planets, time travel, and extraterrestrials. The "Top 100 Sci-Fi Movies" are reviewed and ranked by fantasy screenwriter/film historian Gary Gerani, who covers everything from early silent groundbreakers like A Trip to the Moon to today's widescreen, computer-generated blockbusters. With over 600 rare visuals, full-color layouts. and an introduction by one of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, this exciting new pictorial overview is the ideal companion book to 2010's Top 100 Horror Movies.

Directed by Steven Spielberg: Poetics of the Contemporary Hollywood Blockbuster ReviewWarren Buckland's "Directed by Steven Spielberg" is a welcome addition to the growing shelf of books that take a serious look at the films of Spielberg. His approach is to do a deep analysis of Spielberg's visual style, and he comes up with some fascinating results. It's no news to me that Spielberg's movies are way smarter than a lot of people tend to assume, but Buckland makes a good case for "Jurassic Park," which I'd previously considered to be one of the lesser movies in his career. Buckland is similarly insightful on the subjects of the rest of the movies he covers.
However, I have reservations about certain aspects of the book. For one thing, it's a dry, dry, dry read. This is acdemic writing, and frankly, academics don't know how to write nine times out of ten. Buckland is great at analysis; he's less good at presenting his analysis. Therefore, unless you're a pretty serious Spielberg fan (or a serious film-school student), you're likely to have a hard time making it through some sections of this book.
Secondly, Buckland's concentration on Spielberg's visuals lapses in certain places. Whenever he begins discussing elements of Spielberg's films that he doesn't like, Buckland almost immediately shifts away from visual analysis and toward more traditional criticisms of plot and character, etc. These are quite possibly valid critical arguments, but they are a betrayal of Buckland's intent in writing the book. And quite frankly, a visual analysis of some of these sections might have been useful, even revelatory.
Another issue is with Buckland's analysis of "Poltergeist." He takes a statistical analysis -- a fascinating one, in fact -- of the movie in order to determine who "really" directed the movie. (If you weren't aware, it has long been a Hollywood controversy over whether credited director Tobe Hooper was in fact just a patsy for Spielberg, who has been rumored to have actually done most of the directing himself.) Buckland's findings, surprising even to himself, is that while Spielberg obviously wielded some influence, Hooper was also extremely active in the movie's visuals. This is great stuff, but it seems to settle the controversy in favor of Hooper, and fails utterly to take into account the fact that Spielberg wrote the film (he's credited with "story by," but did an uncredited full rewrite of the final draft of the screenplay). Whether or not he physically directed it, it's a Spielberg movie. To be fair, this is a problem with film criticism at large; the writer of the film is often ignored, and ought not be.
Finally, at the end, there are short analyses of several Spielberg movies not covered in full. One of these is "A.I.," and Buckland opts not to approach the movie's visuals at all. Instead, he offers up the analysis that the majority of the movie is a dream sequence from the point of view of the sick child, sleeping within the cryogenic chamber. This analysis is so poor, so entirely off-base, that it's hard to believe I'm supposed to take it seriously. It's so wrong-headed, in fact, that it calls Buckland's overall credibility somewhat into question. This is a problem coming at the end of an otherwise solid book.
Don't let these problems put you off from buying it if you're a serious Spielberg fan, though. There is a lot to like and appreciate here.Directed by Steven Spielberg: Poetics of the Contemporary Hollywood Blockbuster OverviewAlthough the blockbuster is the most popular and commercially successful type of filmmaking, it has yet to be studied seriously from a formalist standpoint. This is in opposition to classical Hollywood cinema and International Art cinema, whose form has been analyzed and deconstructed in great detail. Directed By Steven Spielberg fills this gap by examining the distinctive form of the blockbuster. The book focuses on Spielberg's blockbusters, because he is the most consistent and successful director of this type of film - he defines the standard by which other Hollywood blockbusters are judged and compared. But how did Spielberg attain this position? Film critics and scholars generally agree that Spielberg's blockbusters have a unique look and use visual storytelling techniques to their utmost effectiveness. In this book, Warren Buckland examines Spielberg's distinct manipulation of film form, and his singular use of stylistic and narrative techniques. The book demonstrates the aesthetic options available to Spielberg, and particularly the choices he makes in structuring his blockbusters. Buckland emphasizes the director's activity in making a film (particularly such a powerful director as Spielberg), including: visualizing the scene on paper via storyboards; staging and blocking the scene; selecting camera placement and movement; determining the progression or flow of the film from shot to shot; and deciding how to narrate the story to the spectator.Directed By Steven Spielberg combines film studies scholarship with the approach taken by many filmmaking manuals. The unique value of the book lies in its grounding of formal film analysis in filmmaking.

Conversations with Scorsese Review
Richard Schickel's,"Conversations with Scorsese" is the first book I've ever read where the entire book is in a "Q & A" form equivalent to a long conversation.
There are several nuggets within "Conversations with Scorsese" that can be utilized within any industry.
1. Choose a profession that you have an undying love for and immerse yourself in your craft.
2. Within your vocation, become a historian of the past accomplishments of individuals who helped advance the industry.
3. Use the styles and patterns of past and present practitioners within your industry to lay a strong foundation.
4. Develop and create a body of work that is specific to your experiences.
5. Consistently fight for unadulterated ways of expressing your creativity without compunction.
6. Although you may be passionate about creating a body of work, realize that you are only one piece to a larger puzzle. Your work is built from the producers who came before you. And future generations of creators will build their work on the legacy you leave behind.
7. Be introspective enough to embrace your strengths and weaknesses.
"Conversations with Scorsese" exemplifies a charismatic way of writing a book that is active and engaging. The strength of the book lies in the ability to create a visual, auditory masterpiece using words as a medium. This creativity comes through the actual dialogue rather than the flowery prose found in traditional writing styles.
I highly recommend this book based on the legendary Martin Scorsese as well as a style of writing in step with the visual necessity of contemporary society.

The Jaws Log (Newmarket Insider Filmbook) ReviewWhat a great way to celebrate Jaws 30th Anniversary. Reading this book is almost as good as watching the film itself. If you ever wondered how Spielberg turned Peter Benchly's book into one of the scariest movies of all time, you need to read this book. It's kind of like being there while the filming was going on. Tons of insider stuff here.
Frankly, I never liked the water much but Jaws just pushed me over the edge. I'm content to view the ocean from a safe distance. No need to get my feet wet. At this point I'm not too sure of the bathtub either. Don't miss this one.The Jaws Log (Newmarket Insider Filmbook) OverviewWinner of 3 Oscars® and the highest grossing film of its time, Jaws was a phenomenon, and this is the only book on how 26-year-old Steven Spielberg transformed Peter Benchley's best-selling novel into the classic film it became.Hired by Spielberg as a screenwriter to work with him on the set while the movie was being made, Carl Gottlieb, and actor and writer, was there throughout the production that starred Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss. After filming was over, with Spielberg's cooperation, Gottlieb chronicled the extraordinary year-long adventure in The Jaws Log, which was first published in 1975, generating 17 printings and selling more than 2 million copies. This paperback edition includes an introduction by Carl Gottlieb, an introduction by Peter Benchley, and 36 black & white photos.
