Actor's Survival Guide: How to Make Your Way in Hollywood ReviewJust by looking at the contents of this book, I could tell this would be worth reading. Unlike so many other books on this topic, this book goes beyond the generalizations of other books.
In order to prepare for this book, Robbins returned to Hollywood after many years to rekindle his acting career, by applying the academic and professional advice he had received through his own experiences, interviewing qualified professionals and struggling actors and conducting research into the various actor friendly neighborhoods in LA. By doing this Robbins was able to discover what is truly effective.
This book is anything but just another book covering the general aspects for a career in acting. I would highly recommend that any Actor pursuing a career in Hollywood not leave home without it.
Karen JohnsonActor's Survival Guide: How to Make Your Way in Hollywood OverviewWhile college drama programs primarily focus on training and technique with western theater history and aesthetics providing the context, nowhere in those programs does one find the study of business or marketing skills to facilitate the serious young actor's transition to the world of professional work. Inevitably, many thousands of these aspiring actors each year end up in Hollywood.
But newcomers will find Hollywood a minefield and a maze, wasting limited resources of time and money out of ignorance of its business realities. The Actor's Survival Guide functions both as a business handbook and a guidebook for newcomers to Los Angeles planning to pursue a professional acting career.
From the experience of relocating to LA, to the casting process, to the identifying (and finding work with) the key players in the film and television industry, The Actor's Survival Guide offers a business-centered road map through the pitfalls and wrong turns that derail too many promising careers and frustrate even the most dedicated of actors, and-for those who have the skills and determination to persevere-provides an extra competitive edge of experience and know-how.

Sports and Entertainment Marketing ReviewI was in Ken Kaser's marketing class for two years and i can honestly say with utmost certainty that Mr. Kaser's sports marketing book is the greatest, most compelling story of human drama and intrigue that i have ever read. It is a poignant and touching journey into the human psyche and inded the very nature of man. Through his stunning portrayal of the book's main character (a Jewish man named Trey), Kaser delves into the relms of intelectual enlightenment and human sexuality. While many subjects are explored through the main character's search for the meaning of life, he ultimately confronts the eternal questions of existence such as "Why am i here?", and "Why is Tenney such a bastard?". This book is a life changing epic full of all the things that make great literature great. Ken Kaser has given the world a gift it will appreciate forever and he will go down in history as the greatest writer in the English language. I give it 5 stars.Sports and Entertainment Marketing OverviewSPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING 3E continues to use sports and entertainment topics as the foundation for teaching marketing concepts. Each marketing function is incorporated throughout the text and is highlighted with an icon to indicate how it is used in the marketing process.

New Ideas from Dead CEOs: Lasting Lessons from the Corner Office Review
Actually, it was Bernard of Chartres, not Isaac Newton, who should be properly credited with first observing that "we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness on sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size." I thought of that observation as I began to read Todd Buchholz's book about ten "giants" of the business world, each of whom introduced or refined "new" ideas that have, by now, been widely adopted.
The ideas on which Todd Buchholz focuses in this book were obviously "new" at one time but have by now become widely-adopted core concepts for achieving and then sustaining success in business. For example, almost all of the ideas about salesmanship that Thomas J. Watson, Sr. institutionalized so effectively at IBM and his son Thomas Jr. then refined were developed years earlier at National Cash Register when CEO John Patterson noted that his brother was outselling everyone else, examined how he achieved it, and established what is reputed to be the first corporate sales training program (in 1893) based on his brother's sales strategies and tactics. It is worth noting that Watson Sr. worked for IBM for several years and later acknowledged the value of what he learned about salesmanship from its branch manager in Buffalo, John J. Range.
In (of all places) the book's concluding chapter, Buchholz offers a challenge to his reader and makes a statement that indicates his approach top each of the ten "giants":
"I dare you. Search this book for the solitary secret that will guarantee riches while protecting you from being flung against the wall by competitors. You won't find it." Buchholz then continues, "Not because I have failed to divulge the lives and lessons f great CEOs, but because I tried to reveal the simple truth about making it big: It does not take a village, a Harvard MBA, or even a rich uncle. It takes passion, and obsession with turning a great idea into a sweeping revolution."
That is certainly true of A.P. Giannini who "invented modern banking" by establishing and then building his Bank of Italy (that eventually became Bank of America) with a customer base of "the little people" (e.g. immigrants) and small businesses ignored by other banks. It is also true of Estée Lauder who "recognized that by placing herself among the `power elites,' to borrow C. Wright Mills' phrase, she could more easily market her cosmetics to the strata just below them." One of her most important insights was that she could sell more perfume by avoiding the word "perfume." She was among the earliest (if not the earliest) of those who recognized how important it is to members of the lower and middle economic classes to have a "taste of luxury" even if and especially if, that is all they can afford. Mass affluence has become and remains among the most significant phenomena in contemporary marketing.
Of special interest to me is what Buchholz reveals about David Sarnoff `s life and career, and especially his impact on the communications media in the 20th century. He was hired by Guglielmo Marconi to work for the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company as Marconi's personal assistant. He enrolled in and was among the few to complete an electrical engineering course at the Pratt Institute. He was on duty the night of April 14, 1912, when he received a message from H.M.S. Titanic that it was struck an iceberg and was rapidly sinking. Of course, there was nothing he could do except share this tragic news with his associates. But he began to think about an intriguing challenge: How to deliver sound to more people? Over the next several decades, he served as CEO of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), heading an organization that delivered first sound, then pictures, and eventually colored pictures to people throughout the world. "David Sarnoff conquered radio and television because he had the brainpower and the willpower to understand both the science and the business."
Buchholz also has much of value to say about the lives and careers of Mary Kay Ash, Ray Kroc, Akio Morita, Walt Disney, and Sam Walton. With regard to Ash, in response to someone's suggestion that pink (actually mountain laurel) Cadillacs are "tacky," she inquired: "What color was the car your company gave you?" As a boy, Disney lived with his family on a small farm near Marceline, Missouri, for only a few years but later immortalized it as Main Street, USA, an especially popular area that welcomes visitors to both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. "In fact, along Main Street, Walt honored his father with a fictitious second-story shop, featuring the following window sign: Elias Disney - contractor - est. 1895." Some of the anecdotes that Buchholz shares about them and the other CEOs are well-known, some less so. However, in combination with a wealth of carefully selected historical material, they help to reveal the CEOs' "passion, and obsession with turning a great idea into a sweeping revolution."
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Richard Tedlow's Giants of Enterprise: Seven Business Innovators and the Empires They Built, Michael J. Silverstein and Neil Fiske's Trading Up: Why Consumers Want New Luxury Goods... And How Companies Create Them (Revised and Updated), and Paul Nunes and Brian Johnson's Mass Affluence: Seven New Rules of Marketing to Today's Consumer.New Ideas from Dead CEOs: Lasting Lessons from the Corner Office Overview

Inventing The Movies: Hollywood's Epic Battle Between Innovation And The Status Quo, From Thomas Edison To Steve Jobs ReviewOver the past several years, especially since he wrote a definitive article on the topic for Esther Dyson's Release 1.0, Scott Kirsner has become to go-to guy for insight about where digital entertainment is going. He's got more contacts than a dozen beat reporters and more new ideas than a dozen thought leaders. Inventing the Movies taught this media-watcher quite a bit and even the asides are bet you didn't know there's a brand of makeup called blu_ray. Anyone who wants a firm grounding in the never-ending wars between new ideas and entrenched attitudes should read this.Inventing The Movies: Hollywood's Epic Battle Between Innovation And The Status Quo, From Thomas Edison To Steve Jobs OverviewFrom Edison to the iPod, from the Warner Brothers to George Lucas, the story of how the movies became America's favorite form of escapist entertainment - and retained their hold on our imaginations for more than a century - is a story of innovators prevailing again and again over skeptics who prefer to preserve the status quo. Inventing the Movies unspools the never-before-told story of the innovators who shaped Hollywood: how a chance meeting at the Saratoga Race Track led to the end of black-and-white movies ... how Bing Crosby brought you the VCR ... how Walt Disney tamed television ... how a shotgun blast signaled the end of hand-made models and the beginning of digital special effects ... and how even the almighty Morgan Freeman had trouble persuading theater-owners that the Internet wasn't their mortal enemy. Inventing the Movies is an important read not just for fans of Hollywood's history, but for innovators trying to make change happen in any industry.

The Interior Designer's Guide to Pricing, Estimating, and Budgeting (Second Edition) ReviewOne of the hardest things to learn about interior design, or any other service industry is that the only thing you have to sell is your time. To do this in a profitable manner, you need two sets of skills.
The first is the one you know about. You've got to find customers, you've got to do the job they want done and you've go to make them happy. This is probably the job you've trained yourself to do through experience, through training, and through the basic aptitude that you had to get into that business in the first place.
The second job is harder. You've got to realize that you are a business manager. You need accounting (to keep your business partner the IRS happy). You need to develop a busines plan, budgeting, etc. You need to know how to prepare and send out bills and how to handle the money when it comes in. And the most critical of all, telling the customer what your effort is going to cost him.
In this book Mr. Williams gives an excellent introduction on how to do these critical things. He also includes enough war stories from his past to give you the understanding of how he learned these things.
I really enjoyed his page one story of starting his own company: sold his car so as to eliminate the payments, crammed his office into his bedroom, paid off all credit cards, in general reduced his expenses to a minimum. When I started I did almost exactly the same: I had a very tiny kind of dumpy house in not too good a neighborhood - but no payments. I had an ancient vehicle - but no payments. Like with him, I was profitable the first month, but you had best not bet on it.
Mr. Williams has been there, done that, walked the walk. His book makes excellent sense. The Interior Designer's Guide to Pricing, Estimating, and Budgeting (Second Edition) OverviewThis second edition is updated throughout and includes additional material on time management and numerous interviews with leading designers. Empowered by the step-by-step guidance in this book, interior designers will be able to establish prices and budgets that make their clients happy and their businesses profitable. Written by a designer and veteran expert on pricing, estimating, and budgeting systems, the book provides practical guidelines on how to value the cost of designing commercial or residential interiors, from the designer's creative input to the pricing of decorating products and procedures. The book shows how to determine a profitable and fair hourly rate, balance the client's budget with his or her wishes and needs, negotiate prices with suppliers and contractors, write realistic estimates and clear proposals, manage budgets for projects of all sizes and types, and position the firm's brand in relation to its practices. Interviews with experienced interior designers, case studies, and sidebars highlight professional pitfalls and how to master them, from daily crisis management and self-organization to finding the perfect office manager. This superbly thorough guide offers pricing, estimating, and budgeting advice that is a necessity for every designer and firm pushing to bolster the bottom line.

Power Mentoring: How Successful Mentors and Proteges Get the Most Out of Their Relationships ReviewTo demonstrate how "power mentoring" works in practice, authors Ellen Ensher and Susan Murphy provide down-to-earth interviews with about 50 pairs of high-powered mentors and their protégés. The conversations offer useful nuggets of insight about office politics, job advancement and successful networking. In addition, unlike many books on the topic, this one provides a useful snapshot of the issues, dramas and special challenges women and minorities in the modern workplace face - and the picture is not always pretty. The book's biggest flaws are its redundancy and use of boardroom clichés. Still, we recommend this personalized, practical book to potential mentor-protégé teams.Power Mentoring: How Successful Mentors and Proteges Get the Most Out of Their Relationships Overview

What I Really Want to Do Is Produce: Top Producers Talk Movies and Money ReviewVery informative read for those curious about producing. You get a sense of the producers personality through the interviews even to the point of sensing some of the pomp and ego that goes with operating at their level. These guys are tops of their field and don't mind sharing lessons learned and how they got where they are. One warning: the producers interviewed are disproportionately from England and Europe. The Americans interviewed are not the most cutting edge and look sort of boring by comparison. All the producers are tops of their field, but by focusing only on the very successful the Americans have typical career paths while the Brits are mavericks since it is much harder to make it there. I would have liked to see some of the good lesser known American producers. What I Really Want to Do Is Produce: Top Producers Talk Movies and Money OverviewWhat does a movie producer actually do for a living? Does producing amount toanything more than writing checks and smoking cigars? Helen de Winter, herself an intrepid young producer, explores the ins and outs ofa job that requires the combined skills of a wheeler-dealer, a diplomat, a stern but doting parent, and a clinical psychiatrist.

The Operator: David Geffen Builds, Buys, and Sells the New Hollywood Review"The Operator" makes for compelling reading. King has done a tremendous job of capturing a frightening time in Hollywood, and showing readers what made it so frightening. This book is not just about Geffen but about all the lives he touched, helped and often ruined. Some of the icons of the 80s and 90s figure powerfully into this story--The Eagles, Neil Young, Michael Eisner, Spielberg, Katzenberg and Nirvana.
King's portrait of a man who was not afraid to burn bridges, betray his mentors, and ingratiate himself with people he loathed is a classic tale of the lonely but powerful maverick who has great skills but also severe character flaws. The tragedy of Geffen is that there is much to admire in this man, but it is impossible to overlook the pain he caused so many people who were apparently loyal to him.
The book is balanced; I understand why Geffen is upset by the book but I think an objective reader comes away with equal measures of fear and respect for the man. In a sense I think King has done Geffen a favor by allowing readers a glimpse of the human component behind the wealth and power. There is no excuse for some of the things Geffen has done, but there is a reason: without psychoanalyzing Geffen, King manages to infer a climate, and provide contour to this man's psyche, that would permit a successful man to behave, at times, with such impunity and disregard for the well being of others. The question at the core of this existential puzzle is: Why would a self-made man with everything do more harm than good? In this book Spielberg is portrayed as a man at the opposite end of the spectrum: a man who is grateful for his success, indebted to the people who helped him achieve it, satisfied with the money he has made, and eager to give something in return.
The richer Geffen became, the more good he did, but it is confounding that he hurt so many people in the process, not because they offended him personally but because they sought to be as good at dealmaking as he was. Geffen's most disturbing trait as relayed in this book is his willingness to sabotage the careers of others by manufacturing toxic and unfounded rumors. What is touching is that Geffen seems at points to realize that his best traits are undermined by his worst traits--greed and a vengeful spirit--but seems at a loss to change his behavior. There is a move towards redemption in the final portion of this book, but it is hard to gauge its sincerity.
King is a spectacular journalist and I hope he writes more biographies. My only criticisms are that 1) the last fifth of this long book is the weakest portion, not owing to King's prose but simply to the fact that that Geffen's life became less interesting after he sold Geffen, and 2) the book feels as if large sections of the manuscript were omitted, perhaps for legal or length reasons. I would love to see what King left on the cutting room floor.
The story of David Geffen is not yet finished and, like Michael Milken, his third act could be a spectacular feat of personal redemption. I think this book sits alongside "Wired," "Outrageous Conduct" and "High Concept" as a truly important book about a watershed but ultimately frightening period for Hollywood. The Operator: David Geffen Builds, Buys, and Sells the New Hollywood Overview

How Did I Get Here: The Ascent of an Unlikely CEO Review
About the Book:
This is not only a business book, but a story, actually a drama of sorts, that provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the life of a most unique man. One who has been able to somehow bridge the gap between a very structured corporate world and a very anarchistic and sometimes rebellious youth market with great accuracy and success.
In many ways, you've seen this story before - you know, the typical rare planetary alignment that brings about a kid with ridiculously supportive parents, the right amount of obsessiveness... the hyper overachieving computer nerd with an abundance of natural athletic talent and endless energy. Add to that a little self-made luck, and you have a true success story in the making. I use "in the making," as it is obvious that Mr. Tony Hawk is far from finished with the story.
There is a certain freshness to this book, I think primarily due to it actually being written by Tony and his family, no professional "hired hand" writers involved. You can immediately feel and sense the nights that Tony, his sister Pat, and brother Steve must have spent together either in each others presence or in emails and drafts, organizing, reorganizing, writing, re-writing, checking grammar, reviewing punctuation and everything else that goes into creating a book of top form.
This book might best be described as a "business autobiography," one filled with fun and very interesting experiences that drive along a good narrative, while providing a reasonable amount of insight into the strategies of marketing a bigger-than-life image and the vast array of product attached to it. The product in this case, in addition to skateboards and apparel, runs the gamut from philanthropic endeavors to television cartoons and radio shows, 30 million copy selling video games, Internet startups, and world tours with enough equipment and semi trailers to rival that of the largest of rock concerts. Through it all, we see how Tony successfully navigates the fine line between celebrity, businessman, and "core" skater, without "selling out" to any one side. The Ride:
"How Did I Get Here," although topical in format rather than chronological, primarily covers Tony's "business" life from 1982 (at the age of 14) straight through to the summer of 2010, the time of publication. You live through almost 30 years of rises and falls, often matching that of the rise and fall of the actions-sports industry as a whole.
If you are familiar with skateboarding history, Tony's professional career is rooted directly back to the original "Lords of Dogtown." Stacy Peralta, one of the original Z-Boys, formed skateboarding powerhouse Powell Peralta and with it, the Bones Brigade skate team. One of the first members he recruited was 13 year old Tony Hawk. We briefly follow this time through to see royalty checks with the Bones Brigade grow from .85 cents to over $5,000/mo. while still a teenager.
With the beginning of the skate recession of the early 90's and Tony soon to be pushing the old age of 25 (there were no pro skaters over that age at the time), things were getting to look rather bleak.
Thinking that his time as a pro skater was limited, he tightened his belt and sold his Lexus, bought a Honda Civic, refinanced his house to acquire $40,000 in cash, got a partner from his Bones Brigade days who could invest also, and started his own company, Birdhouse Projects along with his own skate team. Despite the skateboard industry taking a nosedive, they viewed it as an opportunity that would weed out all the wannabes for them. They were one of the those fortunate enough to weather it out.
From about 1992 to 1994 Birdhouse Projects appeared to be on life support. With his wife pregnant, an attempt at a "regular" job was made. With $8,000 loaned from his parents, meals of Taco Bell and lots of Ramen Noodles, he put together a makeshift video editing system in an attempt to make a living as a video editor, but alas it did not work out as described in more detail in the book.
Things took a quick swing for the better in 1995 at the first of ESPN's annual "Extreme Games", later simply the "X Games," the action-sports answer to the Olympics. As detailed in the book, Tony quickly became the "face" of the games and as a result of both his added name recognition and the elevated profile of the sport due to the X Games, Birdhouse sales took off. By 1997, licensing deals were abundant also.
1998 saw the advent of Hawk Clothing, with exclusive rights eventually sold to Kohl's. Between that and his foray into high-end apparel in 2002, many lessons were learned that could probably fill a book on its own.
During the 1999 X Games Tony treated the world to the first "900" ever, a maneuver that entailed 2 1/2 midair spins off a giant "vert" ramp. The anarchist attitude of the entire subculture influencing the ways of corporate culture were quite evident at this event. A big take-away for any business reader.
The seeds of "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" video game franchise were spawned in 1997 which would produce its first incarnation in 1999 and continue year after year through publication of this book. Tony delves into the offers and strategies from its inception to becoming the best selling action-sports franchise of all time. Here we have an instance where against all advice, business decisions that only he could make, paid off more handsomely than anyone could ever have expected.
The early 2000's brought about new and very different ideas which in turn brought about even more financial reward, in most cases, or at the very least, a whole lot of excitement.
From a "corporate shake-up" in his Blitz distribution company to one of his most ambitious projects ever, Tony's brand continued to soar. Details on the creation of the Boom Boom HuckJam "arena tour, taking 14 semi-trucks for equipment and 8 tour buses for a 60-person crew, demonstrate the creativity and energy Tony possesses. Along the way we see how he makes adjustments to the show year to year as he tunes it into a well-oiled, fun, and profitable machine.
We round out the timeline with the power of the Internet as harnessed by Tony. He makes this power more tangible in fewer and more direct words than I've seen in just about any publication. From the success and craziness of his Twitter Easter Swag Hunt to the once potential closing of his ShredOrDie.com social site, lessons abound in this chapter.
Before we come to a close here, we can't forget to mention the lighter side of his trials and tribulations in Hollywood that are interspersed throughout the book. Like the time when he tried to get that 3D movie deal done with Tom Cruise, or that follow-up to Michael Jordan's "Space Jam" entitled "Skate Jam", and certainly we must note that bio-pic where Tony had to describe his "first encounters" with a screenwriter, which I believe he called a concept of "supreme existential strangeness."
Finally, we would be terribly remiss not to mention or minimize the final chapter entitled "Giving Back" that begins to document his philanthropic endeavors. Coupled with his more personal chapter featuring excepts from blogs and journals we are taken to places like Sierra Leone and his involvement in the "Sport for Good Foundation." One of their programs provides traumatized children a chance to simply be kids again through sports. These were the ones who had been forced into combat, labor camps, and other horrible situations, some ongoing, mostly during that country's darker war-torn years. A very touching moment. Domestically, the Tony Hawk Foundation continues to work year long to help neighborhoods in need. True to form, he ends the book as he states in the books' very first chapter, when talking to his more youthful readers, "If you get some extra money in your pocket, give back." He obviously lends a lot of credibility to this advice by truly leading by example.Final Thoughts:
The only difficulty I may have found with the book was a little ambiguity as to who the intended audience was, however that may have been due to a worthwhile attempt to try to make it accessible to everyone, from those with a passing interest in the Tony Hawk story, to the businessperson who has an interest in action-sports or marketing in general, or the teenager with dreams of becoming a pro skater. This is most notably exemplified when providing advice...
"Gravitate toward sponsors and licensees that are willing to
collaborate on, or even give your team control over, the look
and feel of marketing material, no matter how seemingly
insignificant. It's allowed us to weave a thread of graphic
continuity through a wide range of products." (Obviously to
the businessperson.)
or "Don't rebel for rebellion's sake. In fact, rebellion shouldn't
even factor into it. If the thing you love and do best is
viewed as rebellious, then, yes, embrace your inner Che
Guevara. But don't let the cool police dictate your dreams.
Think of it this way: If your passion is dismissed as mainstream
and dorky, that makes your insurgency all the braver. Do it because
you love it, not because you're worried about what others-teachers,
friends, that hot emo chick who sits alone by the bike rack at
lunch-will think." (Obviously, NOT to the businessperson.)
This is a great read. If you're even remotely interested in the action-sports industry, or possibly a pro skater looking for some sound advice in handling, or how not to handle, your business affairs, or just a young kid wanting to know what it takes to "Be like Mike... or Tony", you can't go wrong with this book. I loved it. I'm sure you will too.How Did I Get Here: The Ascent of an Unlikely CEO Overview

The Life and Death of Classical Music: Featuring the 100 Best and 20 Worst Recordings Ever Made ReviewA fascinating and absorbing read, Lebrecht's expose into the demise of classical music is as revealing as it is heartbreaking. Ten years ago, I was fortunate enough to work at one of the top classical radio stations in the US--(KDFC Classical 102.1 FM in San Francisco)there, I acquired a passion for classical music, reading Grammaphone and the Penguin Guide to Classial Compact Disc's with a fervor as children do with comic books. In short, it was an education in many ways--music as an art form, the aquisition of a refined taste, and a practical education into a highly unpredicatable business.
Lebrecht's book sheds light on all the vanities, egos, and personalities in the industry--past and present. Here is Karajan--masestro grandioso--feared but respected, whose net worth at his death was estimated at over $500 million with most of it derived from reissues of his earlier and better performances. Here is Bernstein, who, considered a somewhat of a second-tier conductor, plagued with insecurities and pretentious self-doubt, would often exasperate orchestras without punctuality or form (often forcing entire orchestras to wait an hour or more before he took to the podium) with his disdain for the inviolate nature of some works that are an inherent part of a country's national identity. Although venerated as a national treasure, Lebrecht paints another dimension to Bernstein; he recalls how the conductor completely botched a recording session with BBC Orchestra to produce one of the "worst classical recordings of all time"--Elgar's Enigma Variations in 1982. A very sloppy and unprofessional approach to a job overall and a personal insult to the dead composer's memory and the English.
What is interesting about this book is how Lebrecht puts it all together; the rivalries between the major labels: Decca, DG, Phillips, EMI and their producers scrambling to be the first to sign an exclusive contract with the industry's power players--Bernstein, Solti, Rattle, among others; how "crossover" discs and performances(a Bono and Pavarotti duo easily comes to mind)ultimately spelled doom for serious classical music fan; how the major labels used sexy CD cover art of young and talented artists like Vanessa Mae, Anne Sophie Mutter and Charlotte Church to increase sales of an already declining market, and the unexpected rise of Klaus Heymann and NAXOS. Here is the budget CD tycoon who taught all the "majors" a valuable lesson by hiring lesser known and Eastern European orchestras looking for work and produced several Grammaphone award-winning discs with Vivaldi's Four Seasons taking away honors as one of the best-selling classical recordings ever produced topping sales of 1.16 million besting even the venerated Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops!
If you ever wanted to know the in and outs of a business as fascinating as the classical music industry, this is a must read. The Life and Death of Classical Music: Featuring the 100 Best and 20 Worst Recordings Ever Made Overview

The Accidental Millionaire: How to Succeed in Life Without Really Trying ReviewAs a wedding photographer, I found Gary's book to be both entertaining and thought provoking. Gary has a unique philosophy about life and success, and his stories are interesting and very funny. His book made me laugh and encouraged me to view my own situation as a photographer a little differently, and even motivated me to take a few more risks. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone interested in business and photography. The Accidental Millionaire: How to Succeed in Life Without Really Trying OverviewThe Accidental Millionaire is the memoir of Gary Fong, would-be slacker who revolutionized wedding photography, inventor of popular photography aids, entrepreneur, contrarian, bon vivant and a man who really, really didn't want to become a doctor. A first-generation Chinese-American, Gary was raised in one of Los Angeles' least-desirable neighborhoods and was forced to deal―in his own quirky and often very funny way―with the burdens of poverty, crime and his parents' relentless aspirations. These issues almost overwhelmed him until he had a dramatic epiphany. Spotting a bumper sticker that read "Since I gave up hope, I feel much better," Gary promptly did just that.He stopped trying and started succeeding. At turns hilarious, insightful and instructive, The Accidental Millionaire is Horatio Alger-meets-David Sedaris. Turning the traditional self-help principles upside down, The Accidental Millionaire disdains the goal-oriented approaches of traditional self-help philosophies. Sometimes not knowing where you are going is the best possible way to get there.

Acting Is Everything: An Actor's Guidebook for a Successful Career in Los Angeles, Expanded Gold ReviewI started reading this book thinking I could jot down a couple useful pieces of information and quickly advance to another book on acting. Boy was I wrong!
This book is overflowing with so many sources that you may as well toss out the Yellowpages. Judy Kerr did a flawless job of providing step-by-step instructions regarding the business-side of acting and how you can get started.
Sure, there are useful quotes from all kinds of big names and experienced veterans about the technique, but Judy was very wise to simply refer readers to all types of classes, coaches and workshops rather than attempt to write a book on how to act. Experience is the only way you truly learn, not by reading about others who experience it.
I'm currently saving up to take the 2-week trip to Los Angeles to research the city which is mentioned in the book with detailed stops to make.
If you're wondering whether or not this book should be on your bookshelf at home, buy it now. No, don't continue reading my review!! You're not listening and I feel disrespected. You could've been entering your shipping address and credit card info by now you lazy bum! Ya wanna act? Okay, your character is shopping for a book by Judy Kerr... This Business of Television ReviewThis Business of Television is a landmark volume in our practice (entertainment industry economic forecasting) for three reasons.
Reason # 3: it is incredible that guys of this stature would take the time to compile such an essential and complete perspective of the television business. Goodenough, a seasoned entertainment lawyer, law professor, and a scholar pioneering the study of law and evolutionary biology, brings the structure and rigor, while Blumenthal, a prolific TV, multimedia, and online entertainment producer and businessman brings the been-there-done-that street savvy.
Reason # 2: it is, after all, the business that pays for the content (the subscriber, pay-per-view, advertising, syndication, and the latest, e-commerce revenue models) and the content that drives the migration to new technology (streaming media webcasting and video-on-demand, interactive TV, and wireless). The clear understanding of the financial systems supporting television and video entertainment offered by Oliver and Howard in this book facilitates the modeling of future monetary transactions.
Reason # 1: video programming spread from broadcast to cable and then to satellite in one generation. The last decade found it spreading to the PC via CD-ROM, DVD, and broadband Internet. In the future it will be found on our cell phones, wristwatches, car seat backs, and refrigerators. There will be innovations in business arrangements along the way, but those who cannot converse in the basic economics will be doomed.
This segues into a jacket quote by Morty Morton, former producer of the Late Show with David Letterman, who remarked, "This Business of Television has gotten me through years of moderate success in the TV business. I'm now ready to burn the damn thing and open a restaurant."This Business of Television OverviewBroad in scope and rich in detail, This Business of Television has been the essential sourcebook for producers, writers, broadcasters, network executives, and other television professionals since the first edition was published in 1991. And as the television business continues to evolve, This Business of Television evolves along with it. This comprehensive guide to the legal, economic, and production aspects of the industry has been completely revised and restructured to reflect the rapid changes in television today, both domestically and internationally. A user's guide to television contracts, plus directories of associations, government agencies, and producers and distributors, make this book an invaluable resource for anyone involved with—or simply interested in—the business of television.• Practical and comprehensive—the only book of its kind!• More than 300 American colleges and universities have television curriculums• Revised edition focuses on the changing world market for television• Replaces ISBN 0-8230-7704-7•

Consumed: How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow Citizens Whole ReviewI see a number of other reviewers belittling the book because of some trivial factual error regarding sports figures or celebrities, but in my eyes those points merely underscores the point that Barber is trying to make. In the end the constant media focus on these types of people is in my eyes a mass distraction. Does it change my life one iota when a drunken celebrity does something stupid? Not at all, but the media covers it for hour on end, and people lap it up.
People defend popular culture such as Harry Potter or Shrek, but these are all pure escapism and have very little relevance to our daily lives. Reviewers of those films make tortured comparisons to try and prove relevance to daily life, but the sad fact is that many people have become conditioned to not expect more, and perhaps not even have the patience to view a more substantive work.
Other reviewers insist that they aren't manipulated and that they have free choice. To an extent that is true, but one can easily argue that many people are making poor choices because they have been so deeply conditioned by advertisers. How can you justify spending 50K$ on a car, and replacing it when it is 3 years old when an inexpensive well-made car will fulfill the basic needs of transportation and may last 5-8 years instead? How can you justify spending money on bottled water when tap water in most areas is just fine? And how can you justify accumulating tens of thousands in consumer debt just to acquire all of this stuff? There are countless such examples all over the place.
And finally, there is the paradigm that runs deeply through our society that having more money and having more material goods will somehow make you happier. The problem is that these desires can never be satisfied - there is always something more, and there is always someone else who has more. In the end all of this materialism leaves people feeling empty, and the only tonic that they know to try and fill the void is to go out and shop some more.
On the other hand, if you can reach a point where you are content with what you have, you may find that many of the things that you do have are completely superfluous and can be donated to Goodwill or sold. Get rid of enough stuff, and that McMansion will seem empty, and a more modest and affordable house may meet your needs quite nicely.
