A Cinema of Loneliness: Penn, Stone, Kubrick, Scorsese, Spielberg, Altman ReviewAlthough I missed the very first edition of this book in 1980, its second edition has been among my favorite film books for a decade. This is despite the fact that most of the film-makers discussed within (especially Scorsese & Altman) had made numerous films since the last ones featured in that edition. Now I have the joyful experience of catching up on their films with one of the finest writers on the topic of American film ever and his third edition of one of the finest books on American film ever published.
Kolker has gone back to his earlier editions and used the newer films to both confirm and refute his earlier evaluations. Many fans of film in general (and some of these directors, in particular) will not agree with many of Kolker's points. What makes this book so wonderful, though, is that you don't have to agree to enjoy it. Kolker understands that film criticism is meant to be a lively art, rather than a process of emalming great works of art. I may not agree with his assessment of each Scorsese picture but his analysis of Scorsese's significance is right on the money. At the same time, his newly added discussion of Oliver Stone is the first writing about the controversial director that gave a fair picture of his artistic strengths (there are many) and weaknesses (fewer but still significant).
Deserving of special note is the book's section on the late Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick's passing makes him the only film-maker in the book whose body of work is completely finished, a matter which Kolkee addresses in a special epitaph. It is indicative of both the quality and bold approach of the book that the author uses Kubrick's final film, "Eyes Wide Shut" as a springboard to ponder how Kubrick's work will fit into the history of cinema in the years to come. He does not make pat, easy judgements but rather admits that the still vital medium is ever shifting and even old works can take on new meanings in hindsight. Production Design and Art Direction (Screencraft Series) ReviewTexts on Production Design are just plain fun to read. When I received this text I looked with great anticipation at the big white space and contemporary layout on the cover. Turning that first page, and the second page, and third to see more, and more, white space, accompanied by extremely small print and small reproductions of rare conceptual drawings, storyboards, photos and architectual drawings from films designed by 16 masters of their craft, was a disappointment.
Compared to books like "Hollywood: Legend and Reality" Edited by Michael Webb, from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, which also had rarely seen drawings and photos, the visual layout and design lacked impact and clarity. Print within the storyboards, often important clues to how the scene was shot, is hard to read.
Ettedgui's beautiful book is an illustrated interview book, but the interviews prove anecdotal more than educational.
Compared to the Text: "Film Design", compiled by Terence St. John Marner, part of The London Film School Series, 1974, the explanation of how production design was technically done on individual films was meager.
In "By Design, Interviews with Film Production Designers", LoBrutto knows what questions to ask in interviews with 20 masters of their craft to relay meaningful information about how the film industry, as well as these designers, work. Ettedgui's work cannot compare in content to LoBrutto's.
As an independent reviewer, I review books on the filmmaking craft for what they can help you learn about the craft on your own. This is a beautiful book. If your eyesight is 20/20 or better you might not even mind the small print, but once past the intial oh-oh, ah-ah of the size, design and layout of this large text, the content rates not much more than 3 Stars.

Make the Cut: A Guide to Becoming a Successful Assistant Editor in Film and TV Review
I found this to be a hard review to write. Normally I pick up a book after reading its title and figure that it will include something that will interest me. I read the title to the instant book and figured the contents would include information about what a skilled film editor needs to know to be good at his job. Basically I expected to read a book that would help me understand "how to stock footage, sound effects (SFX), music (MX), visual effects (VFX or VIZFX), automatic dialog replacement (ADR), onlining, protecting network/studio assets, and even organizing the office space." [see page 3 of book]. I also expected to learn about being "responsible for paperwork systems, project settings and organization, digitizing, import/export/file transfer procedures, logging, media storage, backup technologies and procedures." [id]. Unfortunately I did not get what I expected. Instead I was stuck reading a career guide for someone considering getting a degree in filmmaking or who has sufficient technical training to skip such schooling.
Sometimes I give a very low star rating to a book that is guilty of bait and switch. Sometimes I don't. It really depends on the mood I find myself in when sitting down to write my review. I have put off writing this review for over a month now. So if I cannot find some good qualities in it, then I should have written a killer review a month ago, i.e, 1-star.
The authors have been involved in filmmaking for a long time now - more than 30 years each I think I read. I got the feeling they are kind of old and by writing this book they were "giving back" so younger people could successfully follow in their footsteps. The authors are freelancers. They work on projects and when one projects ends they go without work for a bit until another project comes along. In the book they explain how a recent graduate of filmmaking school needs to get an intern position under a film editor. Such jobs usually are performed without pay, but they enable you to eventually get hired as an assistant film editor - i.e., chief bottle washer under a full-fledged film editor. Interestingly we are told you have to be an assistant before you can become a full-fledger. However, one of the full-fledgers interviewed at the end of the book said he had no technical skills and couldn't do what an assistant does if his life depended on it. So I got conflicting messages from this book.
If I were interested in learning about how to get an internship, then get gigs as an assistant editor, and finally get recognized as a full-fledged editor, then I would have been very happy to read this book. It explains that there is a lot of pro bono work provided by the wanta-be assistant editor. There is a lot of effort required to be expended in order to appear to be skilled and competent and willing to go the extra mile. All in all, I though someone would have to be crazy to want to be a film editor in the filmmaking business. It reminded me of my days trying to find my way in the legal profession as an attorney. What a racket!
Much of what we are told is common practice in any project management setting. There are the managers with authority, and then there are the worker bees doing all the real work for little or no pay. By the way, why wasn't compensation mentioned more in this book? After all, money is why people pursue a career and this book is certainly a career guide.
This book included 16 chapters that were divided among 4 parts or sections. The subject headings for the "parts" did not really help me follow the book too well. And it seemed absurd to group 9 of the 16 chapters in a part called "Getting Started."
Since this book is a career guide I think it should have had a few less chapters in the first part of the book. I think there should have been a "part" that covered filmmaking schools and degree programs. And there certainly should have been some coverage of the technical training that could be substituted for a filmmaking degree before a person sought an internship.
So the book is mistitled. It covers a bunch of interesting stuff for a career guide, but it fails to cover all the bases that should be covered in a good career guide. So I can't say I loved or liked this book. But I didn't dislike or hate it, either. So what is left, a 3-star rating? The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron ReviewThe book was not poorly written, simply...written. It was the equivalent of a high school paper doing a feature article on James Cameron and he is a subject matter that is much more deserving than this.
The book covers his career relatively well, but could have delved deeper. I did enjoy the anecdotes of his early efforts and his fearless attitude on whatever new movie he was working on. Would have liked to hear more about his opinion on the content of his earlier movies rather than his insight of actually making the movies.
Also, the post Titanic content was pretty weak. It focused more on his non-film work, but it would have been interesting to really dig and ask some probing questions on his new found celebrity and the implications of having the biggest box office film in history.
Occasionally we would hear Cameron's opinion's on particular subjects and some movies, but would have enjoyed reading a lot more like this. It was briefly noted that Speilberg and Peter Jackson visited his Avatar set - what a great meeting of the cinematic minds. What about some questions on what that conversation was like? Or asking Cameron's opinions on various films? I've read some recent interviews with him and Cameron is so brutally honest on subjects it quite refreshing. Cameron is a major cinema buff - why not more questions on what films he liked/disliked and why?

Mastering MultiCamera Techniques: From Preproduction to Editing and Deliverables ReviewThis book, MASTERING MULTICAMERA TECHNIQUES, is a thoroughly comprehensive look at cinematography and the digital editing process. This is NOT one of those cheesy how-to-lighting books that seems to be given away with every camera ever made. No! This is cameramen and camerawomen taking you within inches of performers, like Paul McCartney and Elton John, in a live concert setting. This is backstage where gaffers and technicians set up their equipment and do sound check while engineers in the editing room monitor multiple camera angles over David Letterman's studio soundstage. This is part text-book, part insider's information, part university course for interested persons who'd like to work behind the scenes in film, theatre, television or perhaps to have the practical information on creating her/his own production company.
This really is a phenomenal book.
It is essentially a marriage between two departments: the audio/visual and the digital editing departments. Everything that you need, think you need and things you probably wouldn't have thought about are discussed here.
Preproduction. The author, Mitch Jacobson, discusses topics ranging from organizing personnel, the kinds of recording equipment, archiving to post-production facilities and costs.
Production. Types of multi-camera productions, setting up in various venues, studios and stadiums. The logistics of setting up equipment. "On Shoot Day," he discusses the floor plans from what tools to use to power the equipment, the location of the crew, to the art of "camera matching." Beautiful photographs show how various camera angles are fed and synched to the editing room where we see how the production of the David Letterman show is carried out.

So you buy it to support the author for a job well done and you, perhaps, pay-it-forward as a gift to a deserving individual or institution. If you feel this way, then along with Directing the Documentary, Fifth Edition, How to Make Animated Films: Tony White's Complete Masterclass on the Traditional Principals of Animation and The Complete Film Production Handbook, Fourth Edition ...

I'm a huge fan of Larry Jordan.
As a major Final Cut guru and lecturer, Larry is always entertaining, very witty, informative, has a great free newsletter, and his book: `Edit Well, Final Cut Techniques from the Pros', is an excellent compendium of tips, tricks, and knowledge from some of the best pros in the field.
Every section is written by a knowledgeable practitioner, and there are great accompanying clips and demo projects that can be downloaded from the Peachpit website.
Even though I am at best, a dim bulb when it comes to Final Cut tech, Larry really lays everything out clearly and concisely. However, you should be somewhat familiar with Final Cut Pro to get the most out of this book - otherwise, there are several other tomes available that cover all the basics.
I'm admittedly on the edge when it comes to my personal skill-sets, but my head literally exploded with new-found knowledge and skills after I finished this book.
There are a wide range of essential topics covered.
Part one introduces some basics, like customizing the Final Cut interface to other basic Editing skills: such as exporting stills, removing pull-down frames, and archiving.
The second Part covers Effects - an area that I am still a beginner - but I quickly picked up on setting composite modes, as well as creating masks and mattes - even though I always thought a garbage matte was something out by the dumpster.
In Part four, the very concept of learning Motion has been somewhat nauseating to me, but I actually grasped the basic intricacies of 3D in Motion.
Part five - for sound and the Soundtrack Pro segment - has great info on cleaning your audio and mixing, and the sixth Color section really blew me away - because I finally exported to Color for the first time, followed the program, and learned tons about an incredibly powerful tool that I had previously been in sheer terror of tackling.
An additional section revisits the lovely, recently-demised Live-Type, as well as some great info on DVD Studio chapter programming.
Included within the Peachpit web info are a series of very entertaining interviews with a broad spectrum of Final Cut users, from high-end TV and Feature pros, to musicians, retirees, and even foreigners! I was surprised how much I enjoyed listening and learning from all these different users - and they often include a very useful tip or two (c'mon - it's disarming to hear someone wax poetic about T+T+T+T) - so it is worth the listen.
And Larry's interview style is surprisingly akin to a subdued Yoda.
I thoroughly enjoyed cruising through this book and interacting with the exercises.
