Most interesting is discussion in terms of industrial districts and there relation to globalisation. Also important is connection to cultural economy and the dynamic of creative industries. Why is the U.S. motion picture industry concentrated in Hollywood and why does it remain there in the age of globalization? Allen Scott uses the tools of economic geography to explore these questions and to provide a number of highly original answers. The conceptual roots of his analysis go back to Alfred Marshall's theory of industrial districts and pick up on modern ideas about business clusters as sites of efficient and innovative production.

On Hollywood builds on this work by adding major new empirical elements. By examining the history of motion-picture production from the early twentieth century to the present through this analytic lens, Scott is able to show why the industry (which was initially focused on New York) had shifted the majority of its production to Southern California by 1919. He also addresses in detail the bases of Hollywood's long-standing creative energies and competitive advantages. At the same time, the book explores the steady globalization of Hollywood's market reach as well as the cultural and political dilemmas posed by this phenomenon.

On Hollywood will appeal not only to general readers with an interest in the motion-picture industry, but also to economic geographers, business professionals, regional development practitioners, and cultural theorists as well.

Independent Film Distribution: How to Make a Successful End Run Around the Big Guys ReviewIt is always a bitter pill to swallow when I tell my students that after all their hard work, time, energy and passion that they will eventually end up with a product. It is not necessarily a bad thing for them to realize that, once they are done writing their screenplay, they have to treat it like it is the newest product out on the market. And, yes, they have to market it. To market it, they have to distribute it.
The book "INDEPENDENT FILM DISTRIBUTION" does a great job getting to the core of what this journey entails. With a mix of interviews and commentary, Phil Hall, explores this process from the ground up. He delves into the roots of Independent Film and then shows how those roots have grown into the apple tree of today.
What is "Independent Film?" Well, it depends on who you ask. Phil Hall explores that question and then takes it further into: "You've made your film, now what? How do you get your product out to the masses?" Do you go to the comprehensive list of distributors in the back of the book and contact these companies? Or do you do it yourself? Create the website, the marketing kit, the word of mouth? How do you get your product out to the consumers?
Film Festivals? What of those? Mr. Hall devotes a chapter to the pluses and minuses of going the festival route and then, what about "Direct to Video?" Do you want to go that path?
Again, Mr. Hall peels away this onion through interviews of some of the top independent film-makers, producers, publicists and distributors working today.
If I had only one issue with the book, it is the lack of mentioning Roger Corman. Either via interview or his own chapter. In my opinion, Roger was one of the first and most influential independent film-makers who distributed his and other films.
All in all, Phil Hall rips the lid off the Independent Film canister to show you what it takes to distribute your independent film. A great book for anyone planning to take this journey.

The interviews with people in the industry who have "been there, done that" has opened my eyes to the behind-the-scenes look at the business of Hollywood and how distribution plays a huge role in whether a film is successful or not. The advice in the book not only looks at what is happening now via distribution, but also looks into the future of the business and offers alternative ways in helping the indie filmmaker get his movie out there for the masses to see. And with the addition of an interview with Kevin Smith broken up throughout the book, it always kept things entertaining.
As my daughters karate teacher once said, "It's a wise person that learns from others". So if you ever plan to shoot and sell your own movie, I think it would be wise to read this book first. This book gives a blow by blow description of what it took to write, shoot and sell an independently made movie. Written by a smart, funny, hardworking, determined, and insightful guy, that never gave up on his dream.
Absolutely an indie filmmakers bible. A must read for independent filmmakers, but a great read for anyone even slightly interested in independent filmmaking. Or if you just love Kevin Smith.
