TV's Grooviest Variety Shows (of the '60 and '70s) ReviewThis should be a five-star book, considering the fact that it covers many of the great TV variety shows that so rarely get treated with respect in books on the history of television.
But the book is deeply flawed by misinformation, speculation and shocking stereotypes. On multiple pages the author calls Midwesterners racists. He groups Midwesterners with Southerners as hick, anti-black TV viewers, which shows a lack of understanding of the wonderful people of the Midwest who fought for diversity in media.
The book has much information culled from other books and publications, but the problem is that the author didn't double check some of this information--resulting in incorrect "facts" included. He also doesn't include enough research on the ratings history of shows and put the programs in proper perspective regarding their popularity. He obviously doesn't have a good grasp of the history of television and just based much of his "research" on things stated by other authors.
For example, he goes overboard praising Carol Burnett to the point that the '90s flop "Carol & Company" was called a "success" (it wasn't) and calling "Mama's Family" a "spin-off of sorts." (There was no " of sorts" about it--it's a spin-off of a character from The Carol Burnett Show.)
For the failed show "Turn On" (which was cancelled after one episode in 1969) he wrongly states that Tim Conway was "among the regulars" (sorry--he was the guest host that week) and it seems that the author never watched it, otherwise he wouldn't write that it "wasn't really all that bad a show" (I saw it and it deserved the description as TV's "most notorious flop"). His inaccurate description of the show appears to not be based on first-hand viewing but on information culled from some other books. He even compares "Turn On" to "Seinfled"!!! Is he serious?
His writing style is also very odd--he will tie a TV variety show to a totally unrelated historical fact or mention an unrelated famous death at the time the show aired. The writing style is often "cheesy" and uses forced hype to create an improper image of what was happening with a show.
On the plus side, the book does include many long-forgotten books that are rarely mentioned in other sources. The book's title is even somewhat misleading, since the book includes many pages of shows that were not "groovy." So in addition to including Sonny & Cher, the author follows up with sections on "Turn On" and Phyllis Diller's variety show. It's fun to read about these--but the title should be adjusted to note that much of what is in the book is an homage to some of the worst variety shows.
Some insignificant shows should be dropped (Pop Goes the Country, The Music Scene) and the definition of "variety show" is too broad (Monty Python, Benny Hill and Solid Gold?). The book is a fun read for those who are old enough to remember variety shows (mostly those over age 50) but you have to able to tolerate a quirky writing style and incorrect information.TV's Grooviest Variety Shows (of the '60 and '70s) Overviewis an irresistible, page-turning account of TV's greatest and goofiest variety shows of the pyschedelic 1960s and '70s. With the nostalgia trend kicked off by Boogie Nights and Austin Powers and VH1's I Love the '70s specials, combined with the phenomenal success of shows like American Idol and Carol Burnett reunions, now is the perfect time for this book—the first of its kind.Designed to be browser-friendly, the book covers the main shows of the era—Ed Sullivan, Lawrence Welk, Dean Martin, the Smothers Brothers, Laugh-In, Flip Wilson, Sonny and Cher, Midnight Special, classic Saturday Night Live (1975-80), SCTV, and The Muppets. Each of these key chapters is fast-moving and fun, with quick, easy-to-skim sidebars like "Memorable Moments," "Quotable Quotes," and "Bloopers & Breakups," plus a brisk narrative of a show's behind-the-scenes dramas, cast, and history. Including the main shows, Davidson covers more than fifty shows in all, making for a volume that is neither too comprehensive and exhaustive nor too short and superficial. In addition, other shows chosen primarily for their camp appeal and retro quality are grouped together by genre. For example, "Definitely Not Ready for Prime-Time" features campy classics like the Brady Bunch Hour and Pink Lady. "Black & Blue" showcases the curious cancellations of the Pearl Bailey, Leslie Uggams, and Richard Pryor shows. And "The Mod Squad" details ABC's embarassing late-'60s efforts to get stars like Tom Jones and the Lennon Sisters installed in their own shows. This straightforward, fun-to-read account of the campy, funny, popular, and well-remembered TV variety shows of the 1960s and 1970s covers everything from Elvis to the Beatles to the Brady Bunch and Pink Lady, from Dean Martin and Laugh-In and Saturday Night Live and SCTV. It's all here.

1000 Songs that Rock Your World: From Rock Classics to one-Hit Wonders, the Music That Lights Your Fire ReviewIt's not correct to say I finished this one. Every time I open it there's something new to look at. This book is just gorgeous and has a ton of retro and vintage rock photos. My favorite is the use of vintage posters, album covers and rock tickets. In addition to the look, Thompson's picks are on the money but he struggles to put some genres into context. One example is an odd placement of a Bela Lugosi biography used at the beginning of a chapter on movie theme songs. Still, this is a book you'll love to own and want to share.1000 Songs that Rock Your World: From Rock Classics to one-Hit Wonders, the Music That Lights Your Fire Overview

A Talent For Trouble: The Life Of Hollywood's Most Acclaimed Director, William Wyler ReviewA thoroughly engrossing book that delves not only in Wyler the director, but Wyler the man. This books offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of this phenomenal director, from his early days as a young immigrant to becoming honored by the AFI.
Learn what went on before, during and after some of filmdom's greatest movies (Mrs. Miniver, Best Years Of Their Lives, and Ben-Hur) as well as Wylers' time in the service, shooting award winning documentaries. As well as how the HUAC hearings impacted on his professional life and those he came to rely on, and how he dealt with personal triumphs and tragedies.
Jan Herman has taken what could have been a dry retelling of movie making, and offers up a book that is both informative and entertaining.A Talent For Trouble: The Life Of Hollywood's Most Acclaimed Director, William Wyler Overview

The Sundance Kids: How the Mavericks Took Back Hollywood ReviewMottram's "Sundance Kids" is subtitled "How the mavericks took back Hollywood". Except, of course, in the end they didn't. And that is only the beginning to some of the problems that plague this book (which I bought for a dollar on a sale table at the local book store).
Long on history but short on style, Mottram gives the reader a 3-decade glimpse of what the "mavericks" were up to during the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Using The Sundance Film Festival as his yardstick, he cherry-picks various directors, writers and producers to cover, showing their beginnings, their inspirations and their cumulative output to date. It's a good primer on art films, outsider films and indy productions and anyone interested in Hollywood as seen through the independent lens will enjoy what content it has to offer from an educational standpoint.
But that's where the enjoyment ends.
The tone of this 512-page encyclopedia of indy films is slanted towards popular writers and directors he obviously loves and it leaves out multitudes of others he apparently does not. Mottram waxes lovingly of Soderburg, Tarentino and the like in an apparent move to stay on the good side, possibly in order to garner future interviews. What's left out are the crass egotistical interviews, on-set tantrums, belligerent badgering and horrifying treatment of actors, set crew and others - most notably from director Russell, whose fights with actors are legendary (see: YouTube's viral video of actor Lily Tomlin tangling with him on the set of I Heart Huckabees and losing her temper after he's made so many instant changes she can't tell which end is up). It's akin to watching a loving biopic by the very directors themselves, wherein almost everything negative is left on the cutting room floor.
Mottram's writing style is pre-college-level at best. Sentence structure is poor in many places and the work does not flow well from one subject to the next. I found it difficult to get through some chapters since his knowledge of subject and predicate seem to be lacking. The absence of these basic writing tenants hurt an otherwise revealing book, but don't let that stop you from reading it. There are very few other books out there like this one - as mediocre as it is.

Love to Love You Bradys: The Bizarre Story of The Brady Bunch Variety Hour ReviewThe original "Brady Bunch" sitcom has been written about endlessly, but little attention has been paid to any of the subsequent spin-offs... until now, and it's a pretty incredible story! With its tacky sets and costumes, painful song and dance sequences, corny writing and camera-mugging galore, "The Brady Bunch Hour" is more reviled and beloved than any of the subsequent Brady incarnations. It's quite unusual for a show that filmed a grand total of nine episodes to be remembered over 30 years later, let alone be the subject of an entire book -- but the book is jam-packed with interesting info, interviews and remembrances, and tons of rare and never before seen pictures!
The book answers burning questions such as: Why wasn't Eve Plumb involved in the show and which famous socialite nearly replaced her? Which guest-star staggered through a taping drunk? Whose coochie did Chris Knight sneak a peek at? What happened to guest-star Lee Majors' steak? Which Brady became hostile with their co-stars during tapings? Which Brady was nearly reduced to tears by executive producer Marty Krofft? What did they fill the swimming pool with? Which Brady did Fake Jan sleep with... and which one did she WANT to sleep with? Why was Hollywood legend Natalie Wood at a taping? How do Paul Shaffer and Chevy Chase fit into the grand scheme of things? Which series regulars couldn't stand each other? What happened when series writer Bruce Vilanch asked to see guest-star Milton Berle's infamous endowment? Which Brady kid can be seen flipping the bird in an episode?
In addition to all of that, there's an episode guide that includes details on flubs and other things to look for, info on each of the guest stars and cast/crew's remembrances of them, production sketches, script excerpts and much more!
For any fans of The Brady Bunch and/or Sid & Marty Krofft, the book's a must-read!
Love to Love You Bradys: The Bizarre Story of The Brady Bunch Variety Hour OverviewChronicling a production rife with conflicts-from drug addiction and power struggles to sexuality and weight issues-this behind-the-scenes history of the rarely seen Brady Bunch Variety Hour investigates how the show was conceived, produced, and ended up ranked one of the "Worst Shows of All-Time." Featuring hundreds of never-before-published photos and interviews with cast, crew, and production staff, this colorful retrospective details how the spin-off ultimately shattered the Brady's perfect image and forever scarred their television legacy. After decades under lock and key, the story behind the most disastrous offering in television history is revealed in full Brady detail.

DogTown: The Legend of the Z-Boys ReviewFinally, collected in one hardback book are all of the "Dogtown" articles from the mid 70's Skateboarder magazine. What a treat!
In their original incarnation, these articles (especially the single page "Who's Hot!")festooned the walls of my bedroom. Even if the originals hadn't disappeared over the years, most probably never survived the pillaging of their contents; thus, a hardback reprint is a treasure! But the real surprise is how well these articles were written.
Your average 13 year old skate nut is hardly a literary critic. So, I didn't really expect the articles themselves to still hold up nearly 30 years down the road. SURPRISE! They are extremely well-written, in a very adult voice. I'm amazed so many of us read these as young teens, they are really quite sophisticated. Whether Stecyk is writing as "John Smythe" or himself, his voice is intelligent and never descends to the "whoa, dude rad!" depths unless quoting a specific skater. The skaters themselves sound quite self-aware, and each has a distinctive attitude that comes thru, even in the first articles. Stacy Peralta is the proto-typical laid back SoCal surfer guy, into peace & inner-growth. Tony Alva is always & forever the rock star, fully into the babes & bling bling being thrown his way, but never losing sight of skating. Jay Adams is the unpredictable, mischievious imp, while Bob Biniack is thuggish & Wentzle Ruml is devil-may-care & funny.
Friedman's photos are awesome of course, & the color seperations & printing quality lavished on these photos is really impressive. This could have easily been a throw-away done for nostalgia or to cash in on the resurgence of "old school" skating, but instead someone took the time to do it right. The cover alone is a masterpiece of photo-reproduction. "The Legend of the Z-Boys" is a major bargain at this price.DogTown: The Legend of the Z-Boys OverviewIn the early 1970s, the sport of skateboarding had so waned from its popularity in the 1960s that it was virtually non-existent. In the Dogtown area of west Los Angeles, a group of young surfers known as the Zephyr Team (Z-Boys) was experimenting with new and radical moves and styles in the water which they translated to the street. When competition skateboarding returned in 1975, the Z-Boys turned the skating world on its head. . Dogtown The Legend of the Z-Boys is a truly fascinating case study of just how an underground sport ascended on the world. These are the stories and images of a time that not only inspired a generation but changed the face of sport forever. The Legend of the Z-Boys has been described as "The Dogtown text book" and an insightful companion piece to the movie: "DogTown and Z-Boys". . Spanning 1975 – 1985, the first section of the 240 page book includes the best of the "DogTown" articles written by C.R. Stecyk III as they originally appeared in SkateBoarder Magazine. The second half compiles 100's of never before seen skate images from the archive of Glen E. Friedman - many of which appear in the movie. Both Stecyk and Friedman acted as executive producers and advisors for the award winning film, Dogtown and Z-Boys to be released nationwide simultaneously by Sony Picture Classics in April 2002.

The Kid Stays in the Picture ReviewBob Evans. What a guy. I must admit I loved this book. It is pure gossip and not exactly Dickens. But, Evans is completely honest and his own harshest critic. He tells fantastic stories (was there a woman in Hollywood he did not date between 1950 and 1980?). He takes responsiblity for the many, many mistakes in his life and spins fantastic yarns. Toward the end, it can be a bit annoying reading about how once again, he made the right choice and get railroaded by justice, but at the same time, you care about him. Those amazingly honest stories (particularly about his destruction of his marriages--the story on Phyllis George is a hoot) make the book even more interesting. A must read for film fans and anyone interested in one of our more fascinating Americans. Who else would tell stories about Jack, Warren, and Henry Kissinger? It ends in 1994, before his stroke and bizarre 10 day marriage to Catherine Oxenberg (and his highly medicore movies of the last 7 years or so); but that is nomatter. You'll want to hang at Woodland with Evans by the end. You might even be using "the kid stays in the picture" as your own mantra. Then again, maybe not. Just find a copy and read it.The Kid Stays in the Picture OverviewFrom his marriage to Ali McGraw, his cocaine bust, the accusations of murder, the friendships with the likes of Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman, to his legendary court case and bust up with Francis Ford Coppola, this is the tell-all autobiography from Robert Evans, the legendary Hollywood producer ("The Godfather", "Rosemary's Baby" and "Chinatown") who's lived the Hollywood dream.

Steve McQueen: The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon ReviewThis will not be a lengthy review because I think the work should speak for itself. As a lifelong, die hard, Steve McQueen fan I think I can state without fear of contradiction this is THE best researched and written biography I have ever read on Steve McQueen -- and I've read them all! I've read Terrill's previous work on McQueen and he has outdone himself and any other previous attempts to chronicle the man's life. Why? Minus the sordid nonsense of Darwin Porter or the flagrantly incorrect data of Penina Speigel, William Nolan, Michael Munn, etc, Terrill sets the record straight, backs up his facts, and unearths some truly amazing revelations about the man's ancestry, life and work. I'd love to state what those revelations are but the best way to find out is the way I did...buy and savor the book!Steve McQueen: The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon Overview

And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records ReviewI heard about AND PARTY EVERY DAY earlier this year and have been waiting for it ever since. I got my copy the other day and was blown away. I had some high expectations and they were all surpassed ...by a mile.

The book is full of stories about Casablanca's wild parties (the money and drugs flying around the place were just amazing...how did these guys not get arrested?) and their very high profile acts like Donna Summer, The Village People, and Kiss. I thought I knew a lot about Casablanca Records, but I didn't. The book is very well written and even though it's full of details, it's very easy to read, and very hard to put down.

I enjoyed learning about the business side of the music industry, but I was just adddicted to the feeling it gives you of being right there when it was all happening. You feel transported into the 1970s and I was rooting for Neil Bogart the whole way through and found myself thrilled when the label broke through and cringing at all their mistakes.

I've always been a big fan of the 1970s and have read a ton of books and articles about it, but AND PARTY EVERY DAY is the first time I've felt like I was actually there. Highly recommended. And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records OverviewNow it can be told! The true, behind-the-scenes story of Casablanca Records, from an eyewitness to the excess and insanity. Casablanca was not a product of the 1970s, it was the 1970s. From 1974 to 1980, the landscape of American culture was a banquet of hedonism and self-indulgence, and no person or company in that era was more emblematic of the times than Casablanca Records and its magnetic founder, Neil Bogart. From his daring first signing of KISS, through the discovery and superstardom of Donna Summer, the Village People, and funk master George Clinton and his circus of freaks, Parliament Funkadelic, to the descent into the manic world of disco, this book charts Bogart's meteoric success and eventual collapse under the weight of uncontrolled ego and hype. It is a compelling tale of ambition, greed, excess, and some of the era's biggest music acts.

Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg, Special Collector's Edition ReviewI never thought I'd ever say this about anything "Brady", but this is a very multilayered book. Barry Williams is quite the storyteller, and Chris Kreski packaged "Growing Up Brady" very nicely. It remains the standard TV autobiography for the Gen X voyeur who wants to know the details of on-set romances, Hawaii wipeouts, guest star memories, etc. What I really enjoy about "Growing Up Brady" is the easy, affable way that Barry Williams publicly comes to terms with his Brady past. One can only imagine the inane questions, the ignorant comments, and the stares this man has had to endure. And, of course, no matter how good or bad his talents are, there will always be a Brady subtext to anything he does.
Despite the superficial Hollywood tell-all there is a sad undercurrent to Williams' book. Robert Reed's unhappiness as Mike Brady was a surprise to me, although it wasn't unpredicatable. While his mannerisms and on-set antics seem trivial, the man seemed genuinely bothered by how insignificant he perceived his role to be. Watch anything non-Brady from the 1970s and you'll see Reed try to act as different from Mike as he can manage, to the point of extreme hamminess (catch "Pray For The Wildcats", co-starring the king of ham himself, William Shatner). Reed's limits were imposed by himself, and I find it very sad that despite trying very hard, he never seemed to come to terms with his most notable role. Reed's documented generosity and warmth towards his castmates seems to far outweigh any negative insight into his character.
Almost as sad is the inevitable comparison of the actors' post-Brady lives with their former roles. Williams alludes to this many times in the book...fans addressing the cast by their "Brady" names, inane questions about fictional people, and surprised stares from the public when they demonstrate their natural personalities. From the anecdotes, the cast's self-consciousness sometimes manifested itself through refusal to be part of reunions, interview comments, etc. According to Williams, they all turned our remarkably well and very successful in their various pursuits, and hopefully they are all as well-adjusted as Williams seems to be.
For now, I wish Barry well and hope that he and the entire cast can eat at a restaurant free of thoughtless idiots screaming out their "Brady" names. Hopefully we will see more from this talented man.Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg, Special Collector's Edition OverviewThis is the inside story of The Brady Bunch as only Barry Williams could tellit! In this updated Collector's Edition are updated information and numerous never-before-seenphotos of this classic American TV show and its stars.Think you know everything about Greg, Peter, Bobby, Marcia, Jan, Cindy, Mike, Carol, Alice--and the people who played them? Think again! From drunken golf-cart races across theParamount lot to make-out sessions in Tiger's doghouse, Barry tells the real Brady story, previously hidden behind the carefully-groomed facade of TV's favorite family. In 31anecdote-packed chapters, Barry Williams takes readers from the beginnings of the showthrough its wildly successful run, and on through all the Brady Bunch reunions, wrapping upwith a facscinating chapter on "Whatever Happened to..."Also included in this pop culture classic is a play-by-play of every Brady Bunch episode, makingGrowing Up Brady the ultimate Brady Bunch collectible--as well as a delcious slice ofHollywood gossip. The Bradys remain one of America's most loved and admired TV families. From 1969 through1974, The Brady Bunch aired every Friday night on ABC. The show reamins one of TV'shighest-rated shows, reaching 72 million viewers during its two evening repeats on Nick at Nite.

The Making of Star Wars (TM): The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film ReviewThe Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film (Star Wars)
I was four years old when the original "Star Wars" was released, and like so many kids of that generation, that film and its two sequels defined an enormous part of my childhood. Even though I didn't know it at the time, it introduced me to the "best bits" of classical mythology, while being a visual catalyst for my imagination (and years of subsequent role-play, particularly in Upstate New York, where re-enacting ice planet Hoth after "Empire" came out was all too easy...).
As I grew older (I hesitate to use the phrase "grew up," as I'm not sure it's happened yet), I came to appreciate more than just the adventure and dynamic visuals that "Star Wars" represented; it was my "gateway drug" into wanting to learn more about how movies were made. I remember all of the TV specials of that era that pulled back the curtain on the filmmaking process, particularly with regard to the original "Star Wars" trilogy, and I couldn't get enough information. That hunger became the same kind of obsession that's typically associated with "Star Wars" fans, and I absorbed every scrap of detail I could find, from Ralph McQuarrie's concept art, to model photos, to script pages, and even before the Internet made it only a matter of a few clicks to access such information, there was a wealth of it, when it came to "Star Wars."
Fast forward to 2007; "Star Wars" is 30 years old, a whole separate trilogy has come and gone, and my own children are budding "Star Wars" fans for their own reasons. I figured I knew pretty much all there was to know about this film. I darn well should have, for as much time as I had spent (and continue to spend) over the years actively seeking out new details about it. Then came this book; I didn't know anything.
This is dense, dense reading, covering every minute detail about every aspect of production of the original "Star Wars," from drafting the script, to getting it taken seriously by Hollywood, to assembling the team that would revolutionize filmmaking as we came to know it. This is a wonderful thing. I find myself poring over every word, every image, every caption and footnote, just as I did as a child who was learning about film for the first time. It is an amazing tribute, an insanely detailed reference volume, and most incredible of all, a unique representation of a film that has been covered in so many ways by so many authors, that finding anything new to talk about seemed impossible.
The aspect of this book I personally find most exciting is that all of the interviews that comprise it are taken from the period immediately surrounding the production and release of the original film. There is none of the revisionist hindsight pertaining to the film that has come about as a result of the films that came after; every word spoken by the people involved is "of the moment," and as such, is refreshingly candid about what was going on while the film was in the throes of its conception and execution.
The hardcover volume is worth the extra cost, because of its additional supplemental material, not found in the softcover edition. There are 45 pages of storyboard reproductions, as well as Lucas' first-ever references to the larger world beyond what was shown in the original film, in the form of interview excerpts taken in 1977, which involve Lucas describing character and environmental background information. As author J.W. Rinzler explains in the opening to the section, "Many of these ideas...[have since been] modified to a greater or lesser degree. They are presented here...[as] an idea of how he first began [the process of expanding the "Star Wars" universe]." Given the amount of tweaking that the backstory has undergone in the decades following "Star Wars," the inclusion of Lucas' first impressions of it in this volume are incredibly valuable to anyone who, like me, has wondered if the second trilogy of films was truly borne from his original ideas, or was more a product of his later experiences.
This book is exactly what its title promises: the definitive history behind the original film. And for someone who has spent most of his life feeling like there was nothing new under the suns (not a typo) when it came to the story of how "Star Wars" was made, that's saying something. The Making of Star Wars (TM): The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film OverviewMore than thirty years ago, filmmaker George Lucas realized a longtime dream, creating a swashbuckling sf saga inspired by vintage Flash Gordon serials, classic American westerns, the epic cinema of Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa, and mythological heroes. Its original title: The Star Wars. The rest is history–and how it was made is a story as entertaining and exciting as the movie that has enthralled millions for the past three decades.Using his unprecedented access to the Lucasfilm Archives and its trove of never-before-published "lost" interviews, photos, production notes, factoids, and anecdotes, Star Wars scholar J. W. Rinzler hurtles readers back in time for an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the nearly decade-long quest of George Lucas and his key collaborators to make the "little" movie that became a phenomenon. For the first time, it's all here:• the evolution of the now-classic story and characters–including "Annikin Starkiller" and "a huge green-skinned monster with no nose and large gills" named Han Solo• excerpts from George Lucas's numerous, ever-morphing script drafts• the birth of Industrial Light & Magic, the special-effects company that revolutionized Hollywood filmmaking• the grueling, nearly catastrophic location shoot in Tunisia and the following breakneck dash at Elstree Studios in London• the intensive auditions that won the cast members their roles–and made them legends• the who's who of young 1970s film rebels who pitched in to help–including Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and Brian DePalmaBut perhaps most exciting, and rarest of all, are the first interviews conducted before and during production and immediately after the release of Star Wars–in which George Lucas, the film's stars, composer John Williams, effects masters Dennis Muren, Richard Edlund, and John Dykstra, Phil Tippett, Rick Baker, legendary production designer John Barry, and a host of others share their fascinating tales from the trenches and candid opinions of the movie that would ultimately change their lives. No matter where you stand in the spectrum of this thirty-year phenomenon, The Making of Star Wars stands as a crucial document–rich in fascination and revelation–of a genuine cinematic and cultural touchstone.

Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock 'N' Roll Generation Saved Hollywood ReviewThis book is a terrific read: an amazingly revealing insight into the workings of the Hollywood machine and a convincing explanation of why the film industry is the way it is today. Fascinating for any film fan but truly essential for those particularly interested in Coppola, Scorcese, Altman and the other enfants terribles of the 70s. I learned more than I ever thought I would about the strange habits, curious peccadilloes and psychological frailties of these legendary directors and producers. Seminal figures such as Dennis Hopper, William Friedkin, Peter Bogdanovich and Scorsese all come across as frighteningly deranged, emphasising the fine line that separates genius from insanity - and many of these characters clearly ended up on the wrong side of the divide. One of Biskind's great strengths is that he seeks to portray all sides of the story, and it's hard not to believe the majority of what is reported simply for the fact that if wasn't true you can bet your life that lawsuits would have stopped publication in its tracks.
The spirit of the times engendered by the rise of the anti-Vietnam, hippy counterculture, generated a climate where a new form of creativity was allowed to enter the mainstream for the first time. This produced a fabulous glut of films - Bonnie and Clyde, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Taxi Driver, The Deerhunter, Star Wars, MASH and dozens of others. Biskind's belief is that the rise of the super director destroyed this astounding period in Hollywood history - egos and pay checks became so over inflated that eventually the studios realised that they had to seize back control. As a result the industry more or less stopped producing original pictures and opted for the safe bet of formulaic blockbusters which were more likely to draw big crowds - through excessive marketing and merchandising campaigns and extravagant special effects.
Biskind's style is compelling and the anectdotal evidence at times hilarious, at others horrific (Peter Bogdanovich's fall from grace is particularly gruesome). `Easy Riders Raging Bulls' must be one of the best books yet written about Hollywood and one of the best non-fiction books I have read in many years.Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock 'N' Roll Generation Saved Hollywood Overview
