Media Economics: Theory and Practice (Routledge Communication Series) ReviewUnbelievably dry and boring. Absolutely zero effort to make the experience even the least bit entertaining. The author goes to great lengths to make each sentence as wordy as possible (seemingly from an internal self-esteem issue that requires one to be as verbose as possible), as if vocabulary will cover up a lack of ability to convey a clear thought.Media Economics: Theory and Practice (Routledge Communication Series) OverviewMedia Economics: Theory and Practice focuses on the basic principles of economics in the business sector and applies them to contemporary media industries. This text examines the process of media economics decision making through an exploration of key topics, such as industrial restructuring, regulatory constraints upon media operations, and changing economic value, providing key insights into media business activities. With the structure and value of media industries changing rapidly and sometimes dramatically, this text moves beyond a basic documentation of historical patterns to help readers understand the mechanics of change, offering insight into the processes reproducing contemporary trends in media economics. Thoroughly updated in this third edition, Media Economics focuses on the primary concerns of media economics, the techniques of economic and business analysis, and the overall characteristics of the media environment; and explores contemporary business practices within specific media industries, including newspaper, magazine, television, cable, movie, radio advertising, music, and online industries. New for this edition are chapters on the advertising, book publishing, and magazine publishing industries. Chapters contributed by expert scholars and researchers provide substantial discussions of the crucial topics and issues in the media industry sectors, and emphasize both domestic and international businesses. Offering a thorough examination of the economic factors and forces concerning the media industries, Media Economics is appropriate for use as a course text for advanced media management and economics students. It also serves as an indispensable reference for scholars and researchers in media business arenas.

Actor's Survival Guide: How to Make Your Way in Hollywood ReviewJust by looking at the contents of this book, I could tell this would be worth reading. Unlike so many other books on this topic, this book goes beyond the generalizations of other books.
In order to prepare for this book, Robbins returned to Hollywood after many years to rekindle his acting career, by applying the academic and professional advice he had received through his own experiences, interviewing qualified professionals and struggling actors and conducting research into the various actor friendly neighborhoods in LA. By doing this Robbins was able to discover what is truly effective.
This book is anything but just another book covering the general aspects for a career in acting. I would highly recommend that any Actor pursuing a career in Hollywood not leave home without it.
Karen JohnsonActor's Survival Guide: How to Make Your Way in Hollywood OverviewWhile college drama programs primarily focus on training and technique with western theater history and aesthetics providing the context, nowhere in those programs does one find the study of business or marketing skills to facilitate the serious young actor's transition to the world of professional work. Inevitably, many thousands of these aspiring actors each year end up in Hollywood.
But newcomers will find Hollywood a minefield and a maze, wasting limited resources of time and money out of ignorance of its business realities. The Actor's Survival Guide functions both as a business handbook and a guidebook for newcomers to Los Angeles planning to pursue a professional acting career.
From the experience of relocating to LA, to the casting process, to the identifying (and finding work with) the key players in the film and television industry, The Actor's Survival Guide offers a business-centered road map through the pitfalls and wrong turns that derail too many promising careers and frustrate even the most dedicated of actors, and-for those who have the skills and determination to persevere-provides an extra competitive edge of experience and know-how.

On Hollywood: The Place, The Industry ReviewAllen Scott has produce a very original book. Any person interested in Hollywood business structure will find it valuable. Most interesting is discussion in terms of industrial districts and there relation to globalisation. Also important is connection to cultural economy and the dynamic of creative industries. Very clear. Very readable. Very informative. Bravo! On Hollywood: The Place, The Industry Overview
Why is the U.S. motion picture industry concentrated in Hollywood and why does it remain there in the age of globalization? Allen Scott uses the tools of economic geography to explore these questions and to provide a number of highly original answers. The conceptual roots of his analysis go back to Alfred Marshall's theory of industrial districts and pick up on modern ideas about business clusters as sites of efficient and innovative production.

On Hollywood builds on this work by adding major new empirical elements. By examining the history of motion-picture production from the early twentieth century to the present through this analytic lens, Scott is able to show why the industry (which was initially focused on New York) had shifted the majority of its production to Southern California by 1919. He also addresses in detail the bases of Hollywood's long-standing creative energies and competitive advantages. At the same time, the book explores the steady globalization of Hollywood's market reach as well as the cultural and political dilemmas posed by this phenomenon.

On Hollywood will appeal not only to general readers with an interest in the motion-picture industry, but also to economic geographers, business professionals, regional development practitioners, and cultural theorists as well.

Bankroll: A New Approach to Financing Feature Films Review***** Five Stars out of Five! Best book on film fundraising yet! It really gave me a shot in the arm to raise money for my next feature. It's written from a practitioner, not a theorist perspective, in other words Tom has done it from scratch and writes in a conversational style. Artists sometimes forget the second word in "show business" is business, and Tom demystifies the business of bankrolling features in the indie world. God bless you Tom for selflessly sharing your insights, may He multiply back to you everything you have and give.Bankroll: A New Approach to Financing Feature Films OverviewThere is one golden rule in Hollywood: He who has the gold makes the rules. At the end of the day, your film can have every other element in place, yet if it lacks financing, its never going to happen. This book tells you how to get the gold.

Behind the Screen: Hollywood Insiders on Faith, Film, and Culture ReviewBehind the Screen is a collection of essays written by Hollywood writers and producers longing to integrate their faith and work. Their years of experience shine through in thought provoking essays regarding culture, faith and the entertainment industry. These are people that know of what they speak, and those that 1) wish to make a living in the entertainment industry and 2) think they know how to *fix* Hollywood need to read this book and take its words to heart.
I initially read this book in one sitting, but there is too much contained in these pages for just a one-time read. While I'm not a screenwriter and won't be moving to Hollywood, this book resonates with me as a writer, for much of its wisdom is applicable to writing as a whole, and life in general.
The essays in this book are thought-provoking and in a few instances, have even challenged me---something a book rarely does for me these days. Behind the Screen is a book that will remain on my shelves for a long time to come.Behind the Screen: Hollywood Insiders on Faith, Film, and Culture Overview

And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records ReviewI heard about AND PARTY EVERY DAY earlier this year and have been waiting for it ever since. I got my copy the other day and was blown away. I had some high expectations and they were all surpassed ...by a mile.

The book is full of stories about Casablanca's wild parties (the money and drugs flying around the place were just amazing...how did these guys not get arrested?) and their very high profile acts like Donna Summer, The Village People, and Kiss. I thought I knew a lot about Casablanca Records, but I didn't. The book is very well written and even though it's full of details, it's very easy to read, and very hard to put down.

I enjoyed learning about the business side of the music industry, but I was just adddicted to the feeling it gives you of being right there when it was all happening. You feel transported into the 1970s and I was rooting for Neil Bogart the whole way through and found myself thrilled when the label broke through and cringing at all their mistakes.

I've always been a big fan of the 1970s and have read a ton of books and articles about it, but AND PARTY EVERY DAY is the first time I've felt like I was actually there. Highly recommended. And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records OverviewNow it can be told! The true, behind-the-scenes story of Casablanca Records, from an eyewitness to the excess and insanity. Casablanca was not a product of the 1970s, it was the 1970s. From 1974 to 1980, the landscape of American culture was a banquet of hedonism and self-indulgence, and no person or company in that era was more emblematic of the times than Casablanca Records and its magnetic founder, Neil Bogart. From his daring first signing of KISS, through the discovery and superstardom of Donna Summer, the Village People, and funk master George Clinton and his circus of freaks, Parliament Funkadelic, to the descent into the manic world of disco, this book charts Bogart's meteoric success and eventual collapse under the weight of uncontrolled ego and hype. It is a compelling tale of ambition, greed, excess, and some of the era's biggest music acts.

Show Runner: Producing Variety and Talk Shows for Television ReviewDear Professor Clements:
I just wanted to thank you for the eternally-helpful advice and wisdom that you impart in Show Runner. I'm new to being a talk show creator but I feel much better prepared for the struggle ahead after having read (and re-read x3) your book. By struggle, I mean to learn how to do the job well.

My talk show is my first piece to be registered with the WGA and its development is going really well. Since I've been having many "firsts" as creator, I've been keeping a slow but steady pace with it. Should the powers-that-be give me a shot to show run my own show (I know now, after having read your book, that I won't be giving myself this job), you can be sure that I'll be having your book in arms reach even then as a constant reference.
Many thanks again.
Show Runner: Producing Variety and Talk Shows for Television OverviewThe show runner is the television producer who commands a show's moment-to-moment, day-to-day details. The show runner hires and supervises the staff, decides what will be included in each show, co-ordinates the casting of each segment, makes sure that a show adheres to its budget, and oversees a production's flow of activities in conjunction with other producers, staff members, technical crews, and post-production personnel. The only book to deal with the subject, this lively, wide-ranging, informative book covers all aspects of show running variety and talk shows for television. Filled with examples from actual television shows, it covers: making, pitching, and selling a pilot show; production development; a show runner's duties and weekly schedule; working with other members of a production's staff and crew; producing a season of shows.Along the way, it also defines the roles played by the many producers whose credits we see on the screen (line producer, field producer, executive producer, etc.) and their interactions with the all-important show runner.Additionally, the book covers show running as a career, discussing the hard realities and many pleasures of the job, including selling oneself, finding work, negotiating for a percentage of a show's profits, and more.

The Business of Media Distribution: Monetizing Film, TV and Video Content in an Online World ReviewThis book is loaded to the gills with information about how studios market their films. It's very high quality-it helps you maximize distribution while minimizing risk. Like any quality work it is laden with examples of who did what, what worked and what didn't, and the most important piece of the equation: why.
So essential is this book to me that I wouldn't recommend spending a dime making a film until you've read this first. It covers not only the nuts and bolts of distribution but gives insight into what kinds of films are likely to be more profitable than others and how to analyze it with greater insight. Beyond that it includes the dynamic marketplace and what to consider about how you want to release your work. And of course, you want to know how to deal with large competition. You get good info on that here.
Chapters included:
Market Opportunity and Segmentation-The diverse roles of studios and networks
Intellectual Property Assets Enabling Distribution-The business of Creating, Marketing, and Protecting an Idea
Financing Production: Studios and Networks as Venture Capitalists
Theatrical Distribution
The Home Video Business
Television Distribution
Internet Distribution, Downloads, and On-Demand Streaming-A New Paradigm
Ancillary Revenues:Merchandising, Video Games, Hotels, Transactional Video On Demand, Airlines and other Markets
Marketing
Making Money-Net Profits, Hollywood Accounting, and the Relative Simplicity of Online Revenue Sharing
Really, these descriptions only scratch the surface as the coverage of each topic is detailed and broad. If you've covered all these things and you've analyzed it and you think you can make a good profit, congratulations. If you're the typical Indy with what you feel is a great script in hand, and you're brokering your staff, this book is worth the time it takes to read all 461 pages (page count not including index and references). Personally, I'm very glad I have The Business of Media Distribution and recommend that no serious film maker spend a dime without reading it first, beginning to end. You might even change your mind about the film you intend to produce, or have better ideas for making it profitable. Making money is risky-making money with movies is certainly no exception, and if you're Indy and making a quality film, there's a chance you have your share of investors on board. You owe yourself this book. It will be some of the best $35.00 you've ever spent. Your investors will certainly agree.
The Business of Media Distribution: Monetizing Film, TV and Video Content in an Online World Overview
Written by the insider who headed sales for Lucasfilm across distribution markets and managed the release of Star Wars Episode III, this is the first book to show how all related media distribution markets, including television, video and online, work together and independently to finance and maximize profits on productions. It demystifies how an idea moves from concept to profits and how distribution quietly dominates an industry otherwise grounded in high profile elements (production, marketing, creative, finance, law).

The book provides a unique apprenticeship to the business, illuminating at a macro level how an idea can move from concept to generating $1 Billion, relating theory and practice in the context of the maturation of global market segments, and exposing the devil in the detail that impacts bottom line profits.

Producers, media executives, students and entertainment attorneys in specific niches will benefit from this wide-ranging look at the business across various distribution outlets, including theatrical, video, television, online, merchandising, video-on-demand, etc. This book is officially endorsed by Variety magazine.

* Covers the entire range distribution outlets; learn how your speciality relates to the big picture * The definitive book on how studios and networks make money; apply the knowledge and concepts to your business - endorsed by Variety magazine! * Demystifies net and gross: learn how/when you get the money once you've produced a film *Includes perspectives from leading industry executives from studios, networks and online leaders, including Fox, Paramount, MGM, ABC, Lucasfilm, Pixar, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon, etc. *Illustrates historical film windows, the economic drivers behind them, and how online and digital delivery applications are changing the landscape * Relates economic theory, in the trenches practices, market history and current trends *Explores and highlights online influences to each sub-distribution market (e.g., film, video, TV) throughout the development, production, financing, marketing and distribution chain
