Critical Studies in Media Commercialism ReviewThis is a good collection of media essays with a marxist and technophobe bent that includes articles by some of the most important scholars working in media criticism today. It points up the difficulties and complexities of the complete domination of media by commerce. In addition, it brings the material into the age of globalization rather than looking at media as single technological units. One area I think that it misses is the cell phone revolution, because that could create a counter model to the centralizing aspects of commercial media.
Critical Studies in Media Commercialism OverviewThis book brings together an impressive collection of essays that explore the growing complexity, range, and reach of media commercialism in today's world. From the corporate conglomeration of today's media giants to the effects of advertising on politics, society, and the individual, this collection provides a comprehensive and insightful critique of both the impact and the limits of media commercialism.

The New Media Monopoly: A Completely Revised and Updated Edition With Seven New Chapters ReviewThis is the newly updated version of Bagdikian's classic tome *The Media Monopoly* which first appeared in 1983 and was prescient enough to reach six editions by 2000. While dismissed as alarmism, with each edition of the book the problem of corporate media consolidation became worse, and now we are down to just five mega-conglomerates controlling almost all media content, and subsequently most political and social thought among the American public. Bagdikian is an expert commentator on the effects this has on popular democracy and social justice, and the problem has become so bad that it became necessary to create a completely revised text, rather than just a "new" edition of the old book with some tacked-on updates.
This powerful manifesto by Bagdikian sometimes suffers from a lack of focus. One frequent weakness is his tendency to opinionate on the social issues he uses as examples of poor mainstream media coverage. Examples include homelessness and smoking, in which Bagdikian forgets his analysis of media control issues and embarks on long expostulations of his own personal politics. A more general issue is his tendency to drift into political science as applied to modern corporate conservatism and crony capitalism. These are subjects in which Bagdikian is certainly proficient, and they are the root causes of the horrific state of American media. However, Bagdikian frequently drifts from useful media analysis to occasionally cranky political tirades that detract from the focus and power of the book's main points.
And even though this is a completely new edition, much of the text has still been copied verbatim from the old versions of the original book, leading to odd appearances of stories and examples from the 1960s and 70s, some of which have little modern relevance. The new chapter on the internet gives the impression that Bagdikian is barely familiar with that realm, as he gives remedial introductions to concepts that most of us are long familiar with. Other writers and analysts have now taken the issue of corporate media control and produced outstanding treatises that surpass Bagdikian's groundbreaking work (I especially recommend Robert W. McChesney). However, Bagdikian is still the originator and when he's focused, his insights into the social and political damage wrought by our corporate media are still powerful and prescient. [~doomsdayer520~]The New Media Monopoly: A Completely Revised and Updated Edition With Seven New Chapters OverviewWhen the first edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 1983, critics called Ben Bagdikian's warnings about the chilling effects of corporate ownership and mass advertising on the nation's news "alarmist." Since then, the number of corporations controlling most of America's daily newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, book publishers, and movie companies has dwindled from fifty to ten to five. The most respected critique of modern mass media ever issued is now published in a completely updated and revised twentieth anniversary edition.'Ben Bagdikian has written the first great media book of the twenty-first century. The New Media Monopoly will provide a roadmap to understanding how we got here and where we need to go to make matters better.' -Robert McChesney, author of Rich Media, Poor Democracy

Tell to Win: Connect, Persuade, and Triumph with the Hidden Power of Story ReviewLately, I have been reading about the power of persuasion, and some experts believe stories can be used to induce a trance-like state. I like telling stories, and have found that as a teacher, students remember the personal stories I tell long after they have forgotten basic facts. However, I don't think I am always a great storyteller, and I have rarely tried to craft a good story. I hoped this book would shed light on the power of a story, and show me how to tell an effective one.
Guber highlights the times he failed to connect with a client, and most of the time, it was because he failed to tell a story. This may sound counter-intuitive to many in the business world. After all, isn't business about being sober and logical? Where do stories fit in? According to Guber, most people in business forget that they are dealing with humans, and in order to reach people, a sales pitch has to have an emotional component. Stories not only add an emotional dimension to business interactions, but also appeal to our natural love of good stories (which contain a challenge, struggle, and resolution). This love of the challenge-struggle-resolution story is, according to research in the book, hard-wired into our brains. Thus, stories are not just entertaining: they are powerful tools that help us connect with others, and persuade them to see our point of view.
I have to respectfully disagree with other reviewers that suggest the author doesn't explain how to tell good stories. It is true that this is not a book you would use in a creative writing class. You won't learn about the elements of a short story, or what personification is. However, the book explains how to use a certain type of story to become more successful. Guber does clearly explain how to tell an effective story. The entire book is about this, surrounded by stories of him and others. He tells readers how to find the right hero, where to find inspiration, ways to make a story emotionally relevant, how to make sure a story connects with a given audience, how to be authentic, the importance of proper intention (thus sending out proper body language), using props, and many other tips and tricks that clearly indicate how a good, purposeful, story is told. Many of these tips are condensed in the "aHHa" sections at the end of each chapter. He may not treat the topic the way an English teacher would, but he does offer practical advice.
One possible drawback is that this book may not appeal to all readers because it is short on hard data, which isn't too surprising, given that it is about shifting away from that sort of approach. Guber does include research, it is just that the book itself is based on Guber's personal ideas and stories. I am convinced, but it is definitely a new way of looking at business interaction.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It opened my eyes to the power of the stories I regularly tell, and ones I have been told. After reading this book, I know how to craft a compelling story, that will entertain, build rapport with others, persuade others, and help me accomplish my goals. Since reading the book, I have made an effort to tell more stories, and the response has been positive. The fodder for stories is all around, in what I have done, and what I have seen others do. As I start my own business, and continue to teach in the classroom, I plan to craft my storytelling ability to not only educate, but also make more money.Tell to Win: Connect, Persuade, and Triumph with the Hidden Power of Story Overview

The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires (Borzoi Books) ReviewWarning: This is not light reading. The book is well-written but is not designed as entertainment. If, however, you are concerned about the Internet and potentially where it might go in the near future, or more specifically, how it might wind up controlled, this book will be an interesting and informative read. Important too because communication and information dissemination are vital to the freedom of us all.
Columbia University Professor Tim Wu takes us on an in-depth tour of the history of the communication empires of telephone, radio, television, and now the Internet. Wu's analyses and conclusions are both brilliant as well as at times somewhat surprising. Every page gives evidence of Wu's thorough research, careful thinking and insights that went into the writing of this fine work.
The internet has become part of the lives of almost everyone, with its freeing and empowering presence; in fact in important ways it has become indispensable. A not-too-surprising worry might be that the federal government may someday try to control it, not so overwhelmingly as does the government of China of course, but the possibility is there.
What Wu so sagatiously points out is that that threat of control could just as easily, or actually more easily, come from the private sector, because in fact the existence of the internet and its smooth functioning are dependent, not on the government, but private enterprise. A different kind of monopoly looms ahead of us as a distinct danger, and this present information age presents new policy and regulation challenges.
One hopes that the right government officials at the federal level take heed to this awesomely researched book.
If you would like to understand more accurately recent decades as well as the present time the huge corporations that have in the past but also could one of these days control the ways and means of communication, by all means give this worthy work a read.
Highly recommended.

The Business of Media Distribution: Monetizing Film, TV and Video Content in an Online World ReviewThis book is loaded to the gills with information about how studios market their films. It's very high quality-it helps you maximize distribution while minimizing risk. Like any quality work it is laden with examples of who did what, what worked and what didn't, and the most important piece of the equation: why.
So essential is this book to me that I wouldn't recommend spending a dime making a film until you've read this first. It covers not only the nuts and bolts of distribution but gives insight into what kinds of films are likely to be more profitable than others and how to analyze it with greater insight. Beyond that it includes the dynamic marketplace and what to consider about how you want to release your work. And of course, you want to know how to deal with large competition. You get good info on that here.
Chapters included:
Market Opportunity and Segmentation-The diverse roles of studios and networks
Intellectual Property Assets Enabling Distribution-The business of Creating, Marketing, and Protecting an Idea
Financing Production: Studios and Networks as Venture Capitalists
Theatrical Distribution
The Home Video Business
Television Distribution
Internet Distribution, Downloads, and On-Demand Streaming-A New Paradigm
Ancillary Revenues:Merchandising, Video Games, Hotels, Transactional Video On Demand, Airlines and other Markets
Marketing
Making Money-Net Profits, Hollywood Accounting, and the Relative Simplicity of Online Revenue Sharing
Really, these descriptions only scratch the surface as the coverage of each topic is detailed and broad. If you've covered all these things and you've analyzed it and you think you can make a good profit, congratulations. If you're the typical Indy with what you feel is a great script in hand, and you're brokering your staff, this book is worth the time it takes to read all 461 pages (page count not including index and references). Personally, I'm very glad I have The Business of Media Distribution and recommend that no serious film maker spend a dime without reading it first, beginning to end. You might even change your mind about the film you intend to produce, or have better ideas for making it profitable. Making money is risky-making money with movies is certainly no exception, and if you're Indy and making a quality film, there's a chance you have your share of investors on board. You owe yourself this book. It will be some of the best $35.00 you've ever spent. Your investors will certainly agree.
The Business of Media Distribution: Monetizing Film, TV and Video Content in an Online World Overview
Written by the insider who headed sales for Lucasfilm across distribution markets and managed the release of Star Wars Episode III, this is the first book to show how all related media distribution markets, including television, video and online, work together and independently to finance and maximize profits on productions. It demystifies how an idea moves from concept to profits and how distribution quietly dominates an industry otherwise grounded in high profile elements (production, marketing, creative, finance, law).

The book provides a unique apprenticeship to the business, illuminating at a macro level how an idea can move from concept to generating $1 Billion, relating theory and practice in the context of the maturation of global market segments, and exposing the devil in the detail that impacts bottom line profits.

Producers, media executives, students and entertainment attorneys in specific niches will benefit from this wide-ranging look at the business across various distribution outlets, including theatrical, video, television, online, merchandising, video-on-demand, etc. This book is officially endorsed by Variety magazine.

* Covers the entire range distribution outlets; learn how your speciality relates to the big picture * The definitive book on how studios and networks make money; apply the knowledge and concepts to your business - endorsed by Variety magazine! * Demystifies net and gross: learn how/when you get the money once you've produced a film *Includes perspectives from leading industry executives from studios, networks and online leaders, including Fox, Paramount, MGM, ABC, Lucasfilm, Pixar, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon, etc. *Illustrates historical film windows, the economic drivers behind them, and how online and digital delivery applications are changing the landscape * Relates economic theory, in the trenches practices, market history and current trends *Explores and highlights online influences to each sub-distribution market (e.g., film, video, TV) throughout the development, production, financing, marketing and distribution chain

Filmmakers and Financing, Sixth Edition: Business Plans for Independents Review*First Impression
**What this book is and what it isn't
***A Reference Book?
****Conclusion
*This is the second copy of Filmmakers and Financing that I own. I bought the 1st ed. fifteen years ago and, at the time, there weren't many books available and the internet was still relatively underground.
What I liked about the 1st ed. is that it served my initial need of needing to know about the many different aspects of the business side of filmmaking. This is by no means a book about how to write a business plan, neither the 1st ed. nor this 6th edition.
**This book is essentially a reference book that explains the many, many terms and conditions involved with the film industry and dealing with the various entities that do business under this umbrella.
As a business major, one of the things we were taught is that a business plan is a structured proposal that has several key ingredients.
-An introduction--where the company introduces itself and speaks of the nature of its business.
-The Goal(s)--both short-term and long-term. How the company will pursue its goals. When the goals will start, finish. The cost and the expected revenue(s) from such ventures.
-Ancillary Markets--These are possible partnerships or peripheral opportunities that may arise from the undertaking of the venture.
-The Budget--This includes charts and supporting evidence to justify the expenditures.
-Conclusion or Closing Statement.
This book has toward the ending chapters a fictional company and some vague charts.
***Brief explanations are presented for the following categories:
The Executive Summary
The Company
The Films
The Industry
The Markets
Distribution
Risk Factors, etc.
10 pages of tables from an imaginary company.
****This book, nevertheless, is an important book because it explains in the most simple manner the terminology of this industry. It also answers general questions pertaining to the marketing and negotiating of contracts.
Not much has changed since the 1st ed and I would have liked for Ms. Levison to use at least one concrete example: show the budget of the feature. Let me see the salaries of the actors. What were the terms that this independent film company negotiated with a major studio. How much profit was made through ancillary (dvd) markets. What is the cost of film processing. Show some typical expenditure reports.
With the exception of the actual business plan another Focal Press book addresses the very questions that is missing from Filmmakers and Financing: I would suggest a more comprehensive look can be found here, The Business of Media Distribution: Monetizing Film, TV and Video Content in an Online World, by Jeffrey C. Ulin.
This book has not kept pace with the needs of independents.
