Media Economics: Theory and Practice (Routledge Communication Series) ReviewUnbelievably dry and boring. Absolutely zero effort to make the experience even the least bit entertaining. The author goes to great lengths to make each sentence as wordy as possible (seemingly from an internal self-esteem issue that requires one to be as verbose as possible), as if vocabulary will cover up a lack of ability to convey a clear thought.Media Economics: Theory and Practice (Routledge Communication Series) OverviewMedia Economics: Theory and Practice focuses on the basic principles of economics in the business sector and applies them to contemporary media industries. This text examines the process of media economics decision making through an exploration of key topics, such as industrial restructuring, regulatory constraints upon media operations, and changing economic value, providing key insights into media business activities. With the structure and value of media industries changing rapidly and sometimes dramatically, this text moves beyond a basic documentation of historical patterns to help readers understand the mechanics of change, offering insight into the processes reproducing contemporary trends in media economics. Thoroughly updated in this third edition, Media Economics focuses on the primary concerns of media economics, the techniques of economic and business analysis, and the overall characteristics of the media environment; and explores contemporary business practices within specific media industries, including newspaper, magazine, television, cable, movie, radio advertising, music, and online industries. New for this edition are chapters on the advertising, book publishing, and magazine publishing industries. Chapters contributed by expert scholars and researchers provide substantial discussions of the crucial topics and issues in the media industry sectors, and emphasize both domestic and international businesses. Offering a thorough examination of the economic factors and forces concerning the media industries, Media Economics is appropriate for use as a course text for advanced media management and economics students. It also serves as an indispensable reference for scholars and researchers in media business arenas.

Playing to the World's Biggest Audience: The Globalization of Chinese Film and TV ReviewI write this from Los Angeles, which has the Hollywood film industry. It has dominated world cinema since its inception. Yet in this book, Curtin suggests that the expansion of Chinese film and TV might one day make it a serious global cultural competitor.
He analyses the current geographic distribution of Chinese output. Until recently, it was mostly Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. While mainland China had been making movies for decades, the hitherto insular nature of the Chinese economy relegated its film output to mostly China itself. But the burgeoning rise of the overall economy and its opening to global trade has also expanded the scope of Chinese films. This is perhaps the most interesting part of the book. Much of the future projected growth emanates from China.
The quality of the films is also described as rapidly improving. Due to larger budgets, which in turn is a functioning of greater real spending power by Chinese audiences. It has meant that the cheesy, low budget kung fu and romance films are increasingly sidelined.
The discussions about Singapore and Taiwan are interesting, certainly. But those are largely saturated (and small) markets.
The only missing feature of the book is the minimal discussion about animation. The technology for this is now largely available to Chinese studios. While the latest animation techniques are still dominated by American studios, there might be a trend of diminishing returns. Thus, there might be good prospects for a global Chinese animation industry. Akin perhaps to Japanese anime.Playing to the World's Biggest Audience: The Globalization of Chinese Film and TV OverviewIn this provocative analysis of screen industries in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore, Michael Curtin delineates the globalizing pressures and opportunities that since the 1980s have dramatically transformed the terrain of Chinese film and television, including the end of the cold war, the rise of the World Trade Organization, the escalation of democracy movements, and the emergence of an East Asian youth culture. Reaching beyond national frameworks, Curtin examines the prospect of a global Chinese audience that will include more viewers than in the United States and Europe combined. He draws on in-depth interviews with a diverse array of media executives plus a wealth of historical material to argue that this vast and increasingly wealthy market is likely to shake the very foundations of Hollywood's century-long hegemony.Playing to the World's Biggest Audience profiles the leading Chinese commercial studios and telecasters, and delves into the operations of Western conglomerates extending their reach into Asia. Advancing a dynamic and integrative theory of media capital, this innovative book explains the histories and strategies of screen enterprises that aim to become central players in the Global China market and offers an alternative perspective to recent debates about cultural globalization.

On Hollywood: The Place, The Industry ReviewAllen Scott has produce a very original book. Any person interested in Hollywood business structure will find it valuable. Most interesting is discussion in terms of industrial districts and there relation to globalisation. Also important is connection to cultural economy and the dynamic of creative industries. Very clear. Very readable. Very informative. Bravo! On Hollywood: The Place, The Industry Overview
Why is the U.S. motion picture industry concentrated in Hollywood and why does it remain there in the age of globalization? Allen Scott uses the tools of economic geography to explore these questions and to provide a number of highly original answers. The conceptual roots of his analysis go back to Alfred Marshall's theory of industrial districts and pick up on modern ideas about business clusters as sites of efficient and innovative production.

On Hollywood builds on this work by adding major new empirical elements. By examining the history of motion-picture production from the early twentieth century to the present through this analytic lens, Scott is able to show why the industry (which was initially focused on New York) had shifted the majority of its production to Southern California by 1919. He also addresses in detail the bases of Hollywood's long-standing creative energies and competitive advantages. At the same time, the book explores the steady globalization of Hollywood's market reach as well as the cultural and political dilemmas posed by this phenomenon.

On Hollywood will appeal not only to general readers with an interest in the motion-picture industry, but also to economic geographers, business professionals, regional development practitioners, and cultural theorists as well.

This Time, This Place: My Life in War, the White House, and Hollywood ReviewHow's this for a life change: you arrange logistics for the President's trip to Texas in 1963, end up in the famous photo of President Johnson being sworn in, end up LIVING in President's Johnson's residence for a month and become his chief aide, how's that? Well, if that's not enough, within 3 years become president of the Motion Pictures Industry roundtable of executives also responsible for lobby work.
Such is the life of Jack Valenti, an always engaging personality on TV, this book backs up that persona in spades. After being a WWII pilot, the U of Houston grad gets in the Harvard MBA program which sets him on his course. After early life set-up the book focuses on his years in the White House and close relationship with Pres. Johnson before focusing more than half the book on Hollywood, his job and his relationships. At the end, he revisits his memories of famous people that he loved or admired: Jackie Kennedy, Warren Buffet, Lew Wasserman, Kirk Douglas, Tom Cruise, etc. The list is long and illustrious, and while very interesting, this is the one part of the book that suffers from massive name-dropping.
I can't recommend this book higher from a great American. If you have interest in politics or pop culture in the 2nd half of the 20th century, this book is a must read. But, if you want to read the life story of a truly engaging, friendly, family man then it is definitely for you. My condolences to the family on the unexpected death of Jack Valenti shortly after completion of the book.
This Time, This Place: My Life in War, the White House, and Hollywood Overview"[Jack Valenti] lived his life as a gentleman and patriot....He might have been the last of the breed." —New York TimesAn Influential and Varied LifeThe list of notable names—people that Jack Valenti knew and with whom he worked—is astonishing. Aside from LBJ, there were Jack and Bobby Kennedy, Kirk Douglas, Frank Sinatra, Robert McNamara, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Julia Roberts, Cary Grant, Lew Wasserman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jack Nicholson, Michael Douglas, Warren Beatty, and Bill Clinton, to begin a very long list. This Time, This Place is a candid, unforgettable memoir of the life of an extraordinary key political player and Hollywood rainmaker. It is also a sweeping and important historical record, written by a brilliantly successful man who helped shape politics and entertainment in the second half of the twentieth century, and who always found himself at the center of any storm. "A wonderful story." —International Herald Tribune"[Valenti] offers a rousing account of his WWII bombing missions, JFK's assassination (he was in the motorcade), and his three-year stint as one of LBJ's closest aides." —Entertainment Weekly"Only the silver screen can really do justice to a man who is bigger than life, moved easily among the stars of politics and Hollywood, and always kept his feet on the ground. An Oscar-deserving lifetime achievement, if ever there was one." —Bill Moyers

Hidden Talent: The Emergence of Hollywood Agents ReviewIn Tom Kemper's history of the early years of the agency business in Hollywood, he produces a rare work of scholarship: he makes the history riveting to read. Not only does the book offer a persuasive analysis of the financial and even artistic relevance of agents to the motion picture business, but it does so in a way that makes individual agents like Myron Selznick and Charles Feldman stand out as three-dimensional characters one might find in a historical novel. This makes for a compelling read. I would highly recommend this to academics and film buffs alike. As the "narrative" comes to an end with the arrival of TV in the fifties, Kemper promises a sequel (in characteristic Hollywood fashion) and it would be a book I very much would look forward to reading.Hidden Talent: The Emergence of Hollywood Agents OverviewKatharine Hepburn, John Wayne, Lauren Bacall--behind each of these stars was a hidden force: the talent agent. In this first-ever history of Hollywood agents, Tom Kemper mines agency archives to present an insider's view on their tooth-and-claw rise to power during the studio era. It's a tale of ambitious characters, savvy calculation, muckraking, financial ruin, and ultimate triumph, and establishes the agent's vital role in the Hollywood business world. Existing studies characterize agents as a product of the 1950s, but Kemper revises the record to show how agents emerged from the primordial film industry during the late 1920s and carved themselves a permanent niche. Through case studies of key figures like Myron Selznick and Charles Feldman, we see that the agent's character and social relationships functioned within a business structure--a good reputation and powerful connections were his most precious assets. With wit and precision, Kemper locates Hollywood agents at the crossroads of talent and profit, and captures their central and enduring role in the burgeoning film industry.

The Big Picture: Money and Power in Hollywood ReviewAn excellent book revealing a small portion of the creative financing, empty promises to investors and talent, and complex tax structures that go into the entertainment machine. A very good work on the subject.
But sadly, it missed a chance to explain why unsound financial decisions are made on some projects: Sexual favors. It is well documented that many of those with gatekeeper access to the business demand sex for career advancement. The casting couch is sadly not a myth. Epstein's book would have been enhanced by at least mentioning this detestable subject.
This book contains significantly more information that the newer work (2010), and I would suggest not buying the later book as it is more of an addendum and adds no new significant insights. The Big Picture: Money and Power in Hollywood OverviewIn this unprecedented, all-encompassing, and thoroughly entertaining account of the movie business, acclaimed writer Edward Jay Epstein reveals the real magic behind moviemaking: how the studios make their money.Epstein shows that in Hollywood, the only art that matters is the art of the deal: Major films turn huge profits not from the movies themselves but through myriad other enterprises, from video-game spin-offs and soundtracks to fast-food tie-ins, and even theme-park rides. The studios may compete for stars and Oscars, but their corporate parents view wth one another in less glamorous markets such as cable, home video, and pay-TV. Money, though, is only a small part of the Hollywood story; the social and political milieus–power, prestige, and status–tell the rest. Alongside its remarkable financial revelations and incisive profiles of the pioneers who helped build Hollywood, The Big Picture is filled with eye-opening insider stories. If you are interested in Hollywood today and the complex and fascinating way it has evolved in order to survive, you haven' t seen the big picture until you've read The Big Picture.

Movie Money: Understanding Hollywood's (Creative) Accounting Practices, 2nd ed. ReviewThis book will help anyone who desires to learn how their box office ticket dollars are spent. The authors take you step by step through a standard profit participation agreement. I feel the authors are not as aggressive as they should be hollywood's unethical "creative accounting". The distributors and the audit firms would like artists to believe that the lack of knowledge is why many artist are "cheated" out of their net profits or as Eddie Murphy stated "monkey profits". All net profit participants should read this before they listen to their lawyers and auditors. Many auditors and attorneys are willing participants in the "net profit scam"!Movie Money: Understanding Hollywood's (Creative) Accounting Practices, 2nd ed. OverviewThe distribution of a motion's picture's "profits" is, for most filmmakers, a murky, labyrinthine domain ruled by studio/distributor accountants and lawyers. "Movie Money" unravels, demystifies, and clearly explains the film industry's unique, arcane creative accounting practices. It examines a film's various revenue-consuming components and presents numerous film-industry definitions of gross and net profits and the many ways in which these figures are calculated. It also provides in-depth discussions of various aspects of profit participation terminology, accounting practices, and deal practices along with chapters on audits, claims, and negotiating tips and tricks. This Second Edition greatly expands the first edition's coverage of basic cable providers and new rulings regarding motion picture industry financial reporting practices and new material on vertical integration (i.e., studio self-dealing).
