You Can Write Song Lyrics (You Can Write It) ReviewYou Can Write Song Lyrics is a good book for those looking to learn about songwriting. This book uses well know songs as examples which makes it easier to understand the lesson being taught. The author (Terri Cox) also gives very challenging exercises so you can use the skills you are learning.
You Can Write Song Lyrics covers rhyming schemes, and includes exercises how to rhyme past that basic one syllable connection. Although you may 'think' that rhyming is easy...wait until you try these exercises! They are tough and quite fun!
This book also talks about how to understand music jargon, how to work with others on songwriting, and how tempo affects your song.
I was disappointed to see that, You Can Write Song Lyrics offers very little information about how to market your song, once it has been written. Other than that one small dislike, this book was really good. You Can Write Song Lyrics (You Can Write It) OverviewAnyone who's dreamed of writing that hit song - the one that gets played time and time again on the radio - but doesn't know how to start, will welcome the inspiration and practical instruction offered in this new book Terry Cox, an experienced and successful lyric writer, guides readers step-by-step through the process of lyric writing. Readers will learn about basic song components, collaborative songwriting and creative ways to come up with song ideas. Cox also takes the reader through the stages of writing lyrics for a song, from choosing a title to the chorus, versus and bridge. Readers will even find sections on getting the song performed, recorded and getting people in the music business interested. Cox's enthusiastic you-can-do-it approach to the craft of lyric writing is sure to inform, inspire and motivate want-to-be-songwriters. It is the one resource that can make their lyric writing dreams come true.

The accompanying CD has basic agreements, all of which are detailed in the book.
Unfortunately the CD has 75 files which are the wrong format and fail to open in anything but a Windows version of Word. They are listed as RTF files. That is false - they formatted the files wrong.Kohn on Music Licensing, 4th Edition (with CD-ROM) OverviewWhether you are a music publisher or songwriter looking to maximize the value of your music catalog, or a producer, ad agency, or internet music service seeking to clear music rights for products, performances, and other uses, let the authors who have over 70 years of hands-on experience take you through the various music licensing processes, type-by-type and step-by-step. 100 Careers in the Music Business ReviewI enjoyed this book. I was more focused on finding about careers more geared towards A&R and managing, but it also has careers involving songwriting, radio, and so on. Easy to read and a nice format.
I especially liked that each career had quotes from an industry professional telling their favorite and least favorite thing about their job. Very insightful.100 Careers in the Music Business OverviewThe music industry has undergone radical changes in recent years, but abundant career opportunities still exist for beginners with talent, imagination, and a love of music. The record industry and its dealers have suffered recent setbacks, but most other aspects of the music business continue to flourish--and this book tells beginners how and where to find rewarding jobs. Highly talented singers, song writers, and instrumentalists are always in demand, but many lesser known and rewarding career opportunities exist, with new avenues opening virtually every day. Among job opportunities described in this book are artists' agents and managers, talent agents, sound technicians, film and TV technicians, film and TV production managers, advertising illustrators and copywriters, publicists, and many others. The author tells beginners how to match their own qualifications with potential job openings, seek and find job interviews, and get into the music business. For each job designation, she lists the special skills needed, describes a typical workday, and presents actual case studies of men and women who have found music career openings, and have gone on to make the most of them. Sidebar features include at-a-glance career tips and "voices of experience" notes citing the best and worst things about each job. New in this edition is information on how today's new technologies have influenced careers and created opportunities in the music business. The book's several appendices include lists of names, addresses, and web sites of music unions, organizations, directories, magazines, and schools offering degrees in music business management. There is also a glossary of music business and technical terms.

This Business of Music Marketing and Promotion, Revised and Updated Edition ReviewIt seems that most reviewers are quite split on whether this is a "good" book or a "lousy" one. First off, reading the book I got a distinct impression that this book is not intended for musicians, it seems to be targeted more towards those in marketing who are familiar with marketing basics, but not about how they apply to the music industry.

There are much better books about the inner workings of the music industry (see books by Donald S. Passman and Moses Avalon.) There are much better books on marketing (see the "Guerrilla" series by Levinson and Godin). This book is adequate at introducing the music biz to marketing juniors, but not marketing to musicians.

One review wrote: "...dizzying amount of extremely useful information, all within an engrossing and enjoyable text" -- I find this review extremely suspect. I've read many books on both the music biz and marketing -- but this one is so mind-crushingly boring it's difficult to read and useful info is easily forgotten. This Business of Music Marketing and Promotion, Revised and Updated Edition OverviewThe maxim in the music industry has always been "You can't make it on talent alone," and with This Business of Music Marketing & Promotion, you don't have to.In language that is simple and direct, author Tad Lathrop details promotional skills, publicity plans, royalty guidelines, and more, all supported by real-life examples. He shows how the Web and other technological developments have revolutionized not only how music is made, but how it is marketed and promoted. The old rules still apply—create a marketing plan, know your copyrights, be familiar with the laws of commerce—but there are a host of new ones as well, along with new strategies on how to give your recording the exposure it deserves. This streamlined, reorganized, and updated edition features an all-new chapter ("Twenty-Five Profile-Building Ideas to Use Right Now"), which will help readers get a running start in the recording business. They'll also find completely updated material about Internet sales and promotion techniques, the latest information available on integrated marketing and e-marketing strategies, and brand-new listings of information resources.

The Life and Death of Classical Music: Featuring the 100 Best and 20 Worst Recordings Ever Made ReviewA fascinating and absorbing read, Lebrecht's expose into the demise of classical music is as revealing as it is heartbreaking. Ten years ago, I was fortunate enough to work at one of the top classical radio stations in the US--(KDFC Classical 102.1 FM in San Francisco)there, I acquired a passion for classical music, reading Grammaphone and the Penguin Guide to Classial Compact Disc's with a fervor as children do with comic books. In short, it was an education in many ways--music as an art form, the aquisition of a refined taste, and a practical education into a highly unpredicatable business.
Lebrecht's book sheds light on all the vanities, egos, and personalities in the industry--past and present. Here is Karajan--masestro grandioso--feared but respected, whose net worth at his death was estimated at over $500 million with most of it derived from reissues of his earlier and better performances. Here is Bernstein, who, considered a somewhat of a second-tier conductor, plagued with insecurities and pretentious self-doubt, would often exasperate orchestras without punctuality or form (often forcing entire orchestras to wait an hour or more before he took to the podium) with his disdain for the inviolate nature of some works that are an inherent part of a country's national identity. Although venerated as a national treasure, Lebrecht paints another dimension to Bernstein; he recalls how the conductor completely botched a recording session with BBC Orchestra to produce one of the "worst classical recordings of all time"--Elgar's Enigma Variations in 1982. A very sloppy and unprofessional approach to a job overall and a personal insult to the dead composer's memory and the English.
What is interesting about this book is how Lebrecht puts it all together; the rivalries between the major labels: Decca, DG, Phillips, EMI and their producers scrambling to be the first to sign an exclusive contract with the industry's power players--Bernstein, Solti, Rattle, among others; how "crossover" discs and performances(a Bono and Pavarotti duo easily comes to mind)ultimately spelled doom for serious classical music fan; how the major labels used sexy CD cover art of young and talented artists like Vanessa Mae, Anne Sophie Mutter and Charlotte Church to increase sales of an already declining market, and the unexpected rise of Klaus Heymann and NAXOS. Here is the budget CD tycoon who taught all the "majors" a valuable lesson by hiring lesser known and Eastern European orchestras looking for work and produced several Grammaphone award-winning discs with Vivaldi's Four Seasons taking away honors as one of the best-selling classical recordings ever produced topping sales of 1.16 million besting even the venerated Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops!
If you ever wanted to know the in and outs of a business as fascinating as the classical music industry, this is a must read. The Life and Death of Classical Music: Featuring the 100 Best and 20 Worst Recordings Ever Made Overview

This Business of Artist Management ReviewI thought it was a good reference for the beginner. I felt that for such an extensive topic, the authors were able to convey the subject matter objectively and precisely without inundating the reader with meticulous explainations. I have referenced this book countless times since I purchased it, and I feel that it is an asset to my library. This Business of Artist Management OverviewThis authoritative reference on artist management in the music industry is the standard for all phases of managing a musician's career from both the artist's and manager's point of view. This substantially updated edition covers the major changes that have transformed the business world and music industry over the past six years. Particular emphasis is given to the impact of the Internet, including the MP3 controversy and its lingering ramifications, copyright licensing on the Web, navigating trade identity issues on the Net, domain names, and the high-tech fight against cyberpiracy. Included are real-world examples-as well as new interviews with top booking agents, personal managers, concert promoters, record company executives, road managers, and artists.• For aspiring and professional managers in the music/entertainment field as well as musicians, music publishers, and record company personnel• Winner of the presigious ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music publishing• This replaces 0-8230-7705-5, which sold more than 25,000 copies

Entertainment Law in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (West Publishing)) ReviewSorry, I can't agree with the previous rave review.
The book focuses mainly on the movie, TV and music industries. Sports, theater, and, for the most part publishing and electronic gaming are ignored (though of course some focus is to be expected in such a short book). The point of view tends to be that of an attorney representing talent, rather than representing a producer, a studio, an investor, etc.
Prof. Burr's choice of emphasis is odd in many places. For example, she spends 10 pages discussing the privileges and perils of celebrity. Aside from mentioning that Kobe Bryant, Robert Blake and others have been involved in criminal cases, there isn't any mention of legal issues; it's more like a rather tame piece of tabloid journalism. As a result, it seems as if chunks of her book are intended for a popular audience, rather than the typical Nutshell audience of law students or practicing attorneys.
The legal content is very haphazard. If you weren't aware of guild agreements or music performance rights societies, you can learn about them in this book. Prof. Burr introduces some collateral topics such as bankruptcy and trusts and estates law when discussing how entertainers squander their wealth (though to be accurate, she discusses celebrity bankruptcies, rather than bankruptcy law).
On the other hand, entertainment finance and the related securities and corporate law issues never are mentioned. Yet movie lawyers, at least in L.A., actually tend to be quite sophisticated about these topics. Completion bonds aren't discussed at all. TV syndication is mentioned only in passing.
The rights of publicity and privacy are discussed only in the context of celebrities - though they apply to ordinary folks too. If you're buying someone's "life rights", or want to shoot a documentary or publish an interview, you might not know from this text that you need to worry about these subjects.
(In addition, the description of the Eastwood v. Superior Court case (Calif. Court of Appeal 1983) concerning the "right of publicity" is slightly misleading. This right is characterized as a "property interest ... grounded in state staututes, common law, and the federal unfair competition act" (p. 288). In California, the common law right is a component of the right of privacy and is definitely NOT a property interest. Nor is the original California statutory right (Civil Code Sec. 3344) a property right, as the heirs of Bela Lugosi found in a famous case. After that decision, the California legislature passed Civil Code Sec. 3344.1, relating to knowing violations of the right of publicity of a deceased person; it is only this stautory right that is a property right.)
The chapter on entertainment contracts is especially scattered. The movie section has a good discussion of case law concerning "pay or play" provisions, but then jumps around. There's a long discussion of publishing contracts, though the publishing industry isn't mentioned anywhere else in the book. The concept of "turnaround" - one of the great IP inventions of entertainment lawyers - is mentioned only tangentially (as a writer's right of reacquisition) and in a different part of the book; you'll never find it in the scanty index. Generally, contracts are discussed in terms of case law, rather than in terms of the documentation customary in typical deals. This point of view may be helpful for litigators, but definitely isn't a deal lawyer perspective.
A last chapter on globalization mentions piracy in Thailand ca. 1992, but has nary a mention of China (book was written in 2004). Localization, local content requirements and international distribution issues aren't addressed at all.
The book is also marred by bad proofreading and bad editing, with chunks of text being repeated verbatim within a few pages of each other (e.g., compare p. 227 with p. 244, and p. 246 with p. 247). In lieu of this book, I'd recommend you consult a "legal issues for laypeople" type of book that focuses on the particular industry you're interested in, such as Mark Litwak's books or Erickson et al. for the movie business.Entertainment Law in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (West Publishing)) OverviewA basic but comprehensive survey of entertainment law, this Nutshell gives a big picture overview of the intellectual property, contract, publicity, estate planning, and First Amendment issues that contribute to the field. Professor Burr also addresses specific legal issues that arise in the film, music, and television industries, including discussion of the rise of reality television. This Nutshell can be assigned as a secondary text to accompany any entertainment law casebook, as the primary text for a seminar, or as background information for someone requiring an overview.

And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records ReviewI heard about AND PARTY EVERY DAY earlier this year and have been waiting for it ever since. I got my copy the other day and was blown away. I had some high expectations and they were all surpassed ...by a mile.

The book is full of stories about Casablanca's wild parties (the money and drugs flying around the place were just amazing...how did these guys not get arrested?) and their very high profile acts like Donna Summer, The Village People, and Kiss. I thought I knew a lot about Casablanca Records, but I didn't. The book is very well written and even though it's full of details, it's very easy to read, and very hard to put down.

I enjoyed learning about the business side of the music industry, but I was just adddicted to the feeling it gives you of being right there when it was all happening. You feel transported into the 1970s and I was rooting for Neil Bogart the whole way through and found myself thrilled when the label broke through and cringing at all their mistakes.

I've always been a big fan of the 1970s and have read a ton of books and articles about it, but AND PARTY EVERY DAY is the first time I've felt like I was actually there. Highly recommended. And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records OverviewNow it can be told! The true, behind-the-scenes story of Casablanca Records, from an eyewitness to the excess and insanity. Casablanca was not a product of the 1970s, it was the 1970s. From 1974 to 1980, the landscape of American culture was a banquet of hedonism and self-indulgence, and no person or company in that era was more emblematic of the times than Casablanca Records and its magnetic founder, Neil Bogart. From his daring first signing of KISS, through the discovery and superstardom of Donna Summer, the Village People, and funk master George Clinton and his circus of freaks, Parliament Funkadelic, to the descent into the manic world of disco, this book charts Bogart's meteoric success and eventual collapse under the weight of uncontrolled ego and hype. It is a compelling tale of ambition, greed, excess, and some of the era's biggest music acts.

My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep's Prodigy ReviewThis is an insightful autobiography that hooks the audience from the Introduction as Prodigy in a prison four hours from the city realizes he is just another inmate though a celebrity. From there Prodigy explains his family roots changed from musical affluence to the Queensborough projects where violent crime is the norm. For instance, Prodigy, who suffers from Sickle Cell Anemia, admits he committed a robbery to insure he met the code of high school which reminded me of the 1950s Blackboard Jungle by Evan Hunter. His family also knew crime first hand when his aunt a bartender was shot in Queens. When he became a famous rapper, blood money and drugs eventually led to prison. There he found out who his true friends are.
This is a timely fabulous memoir as Albert Johnson pulls no punches with his insightful look at his "infamous life" and at the civil war era of Hip Hop. Profound throughout Mr. Johnson lays bare his guts of thriving and dying in the concrete jungle of New York. Although too frequent use of the first person "I" pronoun at the start of sentences (even for an autobiography) feels a bit disjointing, readers will appreciate the honesty that Mr. Johnson provides in this deep gripping introspective memoir.

My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep's Prodigy OverviewFrom one of the greatest rappers of all time, a memoir about a life almost lost and a revealing look at the dark side of hip hop's Golden Era . . . In this often violent but always introspective memoir, Mobb Deep's Prodigy tells his much anticipated story of struggle, survival, and hope down the mean streets of New York City. For the first time, he gives an intimate look at his family background, his battles with drugs, his life of crime, his relentless suffering with sickle-cell anemia, and much more. Recently released after serving three and a half years in state prison due to what many consider an unlawful arrest by a rumored secret NYPD hip hop task force, Prodigy is ready to talk about his life as one of rap's greatest legends. My Infamous Life is an unblinking account of Prodigy's wild times with Mobb Deep who, alongside rappers like Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Jay-Z, and Wu-Tang Clan, changed the musical landscape with their vivid portrayals of early '90s street life. It is a firsthand chronicle of legendary rap feuds like the East Coast–West Coast rivalry; Prodigy's beefs with Jay-Z, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Ja Rule, and Capone-N-Noreaga; and run-ins with prodigal hit makers and managers like Puff Daddy, Russell Simmons, Chris Lighty, Irv Gotti, and Lyor Cohen. Taking the reader behind the smoke-and-mirrors glamour of the hip hop world, so often seen as the only way out for those with few options, Prodigy lays down the truth about the intoxicating power of money, the meaning of true friendship and loyalty, and the ultimately redemptive power of self. This is the heartbreaking journey of a child born in privilege, his youth spent among music royalty like Diana Ross and Dizzy Gillespie, educated in private schools, until a family tragedy changed everything. Raised in the mayhem of the Queensbridge projects, Prodigy rose to the dizzying heights of fame and eventually fell into the darkness of a prison cell. A truly candid memoir, part fearless confessional and part ode to the concrete jungles of New York City, My Infamous Life is written by a man who was on the front line of the last great moment in hip hop history and who is still fighting to achieve his very own American Dream.
