Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door ReviewHugh Martin's THE BOY NEXT DOOR is an instant classic among musical theater autobiographies, a fascinating tale of an Alabama boy who becomes one of the great songwriters of the century. This brillant yet down-to-earth composer knew and worked with nearly all of the greats of his era and his book is loaded with stories and memories of virtually all of them: Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Noel Coward, Kay Thompson, Beatrice Lillie, Mae West, Lucille Ball, Vincente Minnelli, Tony Bennett, Irving Berlin, June Allyson, Frank Sinatra, Ethel Waters, Liza Minnelli, Gene Kelly, Joshua Logan, Carmen Miranda, Lena Horne, Jeanette MacDonald, the list is endless and includes his admirers Stephen Sondheim and Michael Feinstein (who writes the foreward to this book). And of course, the star most associated with Martin, Judy Garland, whom he wrote "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Trolley Song" for and later accompanied her in her legendary 1951 stint at the Palace Theater. There's also much about his famed collaboration with Ralph Blane which apparently was more in-name than in-action. This man knew everyone - from Grandma Moses to Gore Vidal to gospel singer Del Delker, whom he accompanied on religious revival tours when he was quite on in years.
Martin is 96 now and amazingly, wrote the book without a ghost writer. The text beautifully captures this man's gentle, friendly, and loving spirit as noted in the foreward by Feinstein. Gracious and lavish with his praise, no one really gets raked over the coals here, not even "friend" Blane who Martin discovered fairly recently went around claiming to be the author of several Martin songs, although Martin is obviously, to quote Lady Catherine de Bourgh, "seriously displeased". A more complicated issue was his regretted break with Garland during her troubled A STAR IS BORN production in which he begged her not to "belt" her performance of "The Man Who Got Away" but sing it with restrained feeling which resulted in Garland cursing and ridiculing him before the people on the set, causing him to walk off the production. He is harder on himself in restropect than with Judy, not seeing her inner turmoil at the time and now realizing how badly she needed a supportive friend despite her belligerence. (A funnier but similar battle emerged two decades later when Martin was hired to be vocal arranger for the Broadway production of SUGAR BABIES and found Ann Miller equally willful when it came to advice on how to best deliver a song.) Martin sent Garland a note years later who responded with a loving telegram as tall as Garland herself which he had framed.
There's not that much about Martin's personal life but then many a serious musician puts their music above all else and this is undoubtably how he lived during the peak years of his career. Martin is quite frank though about his years battling "speed" which left him an emotional and physical mess even many years after he conquered the vice. Most important to his full recovery was becoming "born again" Christian in the 1970's and although he writes of his joy in embracing religion he is not an confrontational Bible thumper. Feinstein writes in the foreward that Martin's "unwavering faith and appreciation for life...gives others a sense of security and comfort"; Tony Bennett on the back jacket states Martin is "the single most talented and finest human being I know."
One big surprise is how unhappy Martin was during his contract with MGM; producer Arthur Freed apparently was quite a terror not only to Martin but to such stars as Lucille Ball, whom Martin writes that Freed wounded so badly with his tongue that Lucy was unable to return to the studio for days.
One of the lovely things about the book is how Martin repeatedly goes out of his way to praise many of his contemporaries, friends, and associates. He is an eloquent defender of Mickey Rooney against his reputation of being tempermental and his analysis of his songwriting peers (always positive) is as superb as a music critic. There's also lots of good humor too as when Martin recalls Jerome Kern's comments to him and Blane: "I think that was disgracefully unpatriotic of you to write 'Buckle Down Winsocki' when we're at war with Japan" even occasional black humor as Gore Vidal tells him as they watch Princess Diana's funeral, "Do we really want Elton John to sing at our funerals?"
This beautifully produced book (loaded with many rare photos) is sure to be treasured by lovers of musicals be they Broadway or movie, or fans of just good music. Hugh Martin is a true hero; a brillant talent and a truly good man. Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Mr. Martin and thank you for the music of our lives!
Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door OverviewHugh Martin: The Boy Next Door is an enchanting jaunt through the Golden Era of Broadway and the MGM musicals. This firsthand account captures the energy and excitement of those special times, with eyewitness tales of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and dozens more. Hugh recounts the origins of some of America's most beloved songs, including the perennial favorite, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Martin also reveals some secrets that only he could know: the truth about his composition partner Ralph Blane, his addiction to the infamous Dr. Feelgood, Max Jacobson; how he was instrumental in turning Gene Kelly from a performer to a choreographer during the staging of Best Foot Forward; and what it was really like to be part of the MGM musical production machine. As Hugh enters his 96th year, this could be America's last chance to hear these stories from a living source. They are full of his signature charm, grace, musicality, and poeticism.

Cosmic Conspiracy: Psychic to the Rich & Famous ReviewThe life of a psychic is one with a drive to try to bring what joy you can. "Cosmic Conspiracy: Psychic to the Rich and Famous" is a memoir from Patricia McLaine as she recounts her own journey through life and how she gained famous clients and helped shape their careers for the better. Thoughtful and intriguing on the insight on the many types of life, "Cosmic Conspiracy" is a metaphysical memoir that will intrigue those who wish to know the life and ways of the psychic.Cosmic Conspiracy: Psychic to the Rich & Famous OverviewPattie McLaine never planned to be a professional psychic consultant. She had started writing at an early age and that was what she thought she really wanted to do with her life. Early on, she had no real clue about what Destiny had in store for her-no clear remembrance of a promise made to the Universe long before she was even born-a promise to perhaps try to help people again and shed some Light-as she had during many other lifetimes throughout the centuries. A series of strange and wonderful events took place, which had actually occurred in many different guises from the day that she was born. When Pattie was three months old, her mother took her into a church, knelt before the altar, and dedicated her daughter's life to God-without asking for Pattie's permission, of course. There were many other strange and incredible events that happened all along the way that are revealed within the pages of this book-which altogether amounted to what Pattie decided had to be a clever, capricious and cunning scheme-if not an Absolute Cosmic Conspiracy!

The First Time ReviewI have been a fan of Cher's for several years now, and it wasn't until recently that I finally decided to read The First Time. Let me say, I was not disappointed. Cher describes the important firsts in her life, which goes in detail from past to present. There are tales of the beginning of her music career, acting career, and so on. I always had an image of her being an honest and down to earth person, and that's exactly what was confirmed from reading this book. She can be sarcastic, but in a lovable way, and it's obvious that she only wants the best for people, as evident in how she helps children with Craniofacial disease, and other stories told in The First Time. I really enjoyed reading this book, and it's a must have for fans. The First Time Overview

Just Call Me Mike: A Journey to Actor and Activist ReviewI am a conservative, over 20 years served, active duty US Marine, currently deployed to Baghdad Iraq. I am guessing some readers would wonder why I read the book. I know Mr Farrell is a little to the left, so what. I have enjoyed hearing his opinions on various political shows over the years so that I can hear what the left has to say. He has always been polite and respectful to all opinions, so I gave it a shot. I was not dissapointed, he tells a great story of how he became who he is, to include his time in the US Marines. I almost laugh at the thought of him serving, but I believe from reading this book Mr Farrell loves his country and is a patriot, just with differing opinions from my own and I salute his service to our country. You will read some about MASH, his childhood and how he became a activist. Be warned, he is harsh to conservatives, which I did not agree with, but I respect his right to speak out, and speak out he does. Maybe a little too much conservatie bashing, he could have got his point across with less, but overall a good read, just have a open mind, and if you are looking for a book only about MASH, this is not it. Semper Fi Mr Farrell, I enjoyed your book.Just Call Me Mike: A Journey to Actor and Activist Overview

Sh-Boom: The Explosion of Rock 'n' Roll (1953-1968) ReviewThe writing is robust and beautiful. I wanted to keep it in my life a little longer. Clay Cole has skillfully blended memoirs with cultural history. There are tender moments and others that are very funny. Clay has the well-earned reputation of being one of the kindest people in show business. He does not hold back, however, in describing some of the darker moments in Rock 'n' Roll history. Payola and racism get it right in the chops.
Baby boomers will love this book, but non boomers should not hold back. Everyone's life will be enriched by reading about these legendary times when teenagers wrote and performed for teenagers, and the book could easily be used in writing classrooms as a prime example of how to tell a story.Sh-Boom: The Explosion of Rock 'n' Roll (1953-1968) OverviewThere was a small sliver of time between Be-Bop and Hip-Hop, when a new generation of teenagers created rock 'n' roll. Clay Cole was one of those teenagers he was the host of his own Saturday night, pop music television show.
Clay Cole's SH-BOOM! is the pop culture chronicle of that exciting time, 1953-1968, when teenagers created their own music, from swing bands and pop to rhythm and blues, cover records, a cappella, rockabilly, folk-rock, and girl groups; from the British Invasion to the creation of the American Boy Band. He was first to introduce Chubby Checker performing the "Twist;" the first to present the Rolling Stones, Tony Orlando, Dionne Warwick, Neil Diamond, Bobby Vinton, the Rascals, Ronettes, Four Seasons, Dion, and dozens more; the first to introduce music video clips, discotheque, go-go girls and young unknown standup comedians Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and Fannie Flagg to a teenage television audience.

Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography ReviewChong provides a very interesting walk through his life and career and tells some good "behind the scenes" stories, but I would have liked more detail in certain areas. More info on how they made the movies and albums would have been nice. It would also have been interested to hear Cheech's side of some of the stories, but it is understandable why that isn't in there. Still, it is a very entertaining read overall.Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography Overview Dave's Not Here, Man But America's favorite stoner comedian, Tommy Chong, is back and funnier than ever as he takes us on a nostalgic trip through his career with partner Richard "Cheech" Marin. Over the course of their decades-long partnership, Cheech and Chong performed to sold-out crowds across the country, made nine hit albums, starred in eight blockbuster movies, and created memorable and iconic characters that still resonate with fans today. But the good life didn't just appear in a haze of smoke. It all started during the late 1960s in a strip club in the fragile heart of Vancouver's Chinatown, where Tommy was winding down his career as a Motown recording artist and starting an improv comedy troupe, and Cheech was a draft-dodging, pottery-throwing, underground music reviewer. Together they came to define the hippie-era counterculture, and theircelebrated movie debut, Up in Smoke, remains one of the highest-grossing Warner Bros. films ever. In his very own unauthorized autobiography, New York Times bestselling author and pop culture hero Chong reveals his unique relationship with Cheech and recalls the inspiration for their most beloved bits. He introduces famous guest stars like Peter Sellers, John Belushi, Jimi Hendrix, Dan Aykroyd, John Lennon, Diana Ross, and Jack Nicholson, and examines the influences that had the greatest impact on his comedy -- from R&B musicians and Redd Foxx to Lenny Bruce and (of course) marijuana. Finally, with keen insight and utter candor, he explores the rift that has separated the legendary comedy team for more than twenty years. From pot smoking to politics to the universe at large, Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography is the closestyou'll ever get to sitting in a van made entirely of marijuana, trading stories with an unlikely legend, and feeling...well...funny.

Searching for Schindler: A memoir ReviewThomas Keneally is among the finest, most versatile and prolific writers in the world. His fiction and non-fiction range from the American South, to Ireland, to Eritrea, to World War I Europe, to Antarctica, and to contemporary and 'convict' Australia, his native country. And, of course to the Holocaust and his Booker Prize winning "Schindler's List" ("Schindler's Ark" everywhere but in the United States). "Searching for Schindler" is a moving account of how Keneally first heard of Oskar Schindler, how he crossed the globe to do the research necessary to write the novel, and how he participated in the making of the Academy Award winning film.
"Searching for Schindler" is also intensely personal and the reader comes to know many of the survivors Keneally interviewed and the author himself, a writer with a staggering capacity for work and an unquenchable thirst for understanding humanity. I recommend this book and everything Keneally has written. I have, for many years believed Thomas Keneally deserves consideration for the Nobel Prize; this book is confirmation of that belief.

Call Me Lucky: A Texan in Hollywood ReviewI borrowed the book from my Mom and absolutely couldn't put it down until I finished it, very well written. I know anyone would enjoy this book about all of the actors and singers that Bobby Hinkle has worked with during his 50 years in show business. It is almost like being there with him as he shares the very interesting and personal stories of the movie and recording stars we all grew up with. I highly recommend this book to anyone, a wonderful read! EGCall Me Lucky: A Texan in Hollywood Overview"Do you think you could teach Rock Hudson to talk like you do?"
The question came from famed Hollywood director George Stevens, and an affirmative answer propelled Bob Hinkle into a fifty-year career in Hollywood as a speech coach, actor, producer, director, and friend to the stars. Along the way, Hinkle helped Rock Hudson, Dennis Hopper, Carroll Baker, and Mercedes McCambridge talk like Texans for the 1956 epic film Giant. He also helped create the character Jett Rink with James Dean, who became a best friend, and he consoled Elizabeth Taylor personally when Dean was killed in a tragic car accident before the film was released.

A few years later, Paul Newman asked Hinkle to do for him what he'd done for James Dean. The result was Newman's powerful portrayal of a Texas no-good in the Academy Award–winning film Hud (1963). Hinkle could—and did—stop by the LBJ Ranch to exchange pleasantries with the president of the United States. He did likewise with Elvis Presley at Graceland. Good friends with Robert Wagner, Hinkle even taught Wagner's wife Natalie Wood how to throw a rope. He appeared in numerous television series, including Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Dragnet, and Walker, Texas Ranger. On a handshake, he worked as country music legend Marty Robbins's manager, and he helped Evel Knievel rise to fame.

From his birth in Brownfield, Texas, to a family so poor "they could only afford a tumbleweed as a pet," Hinkle went on to gain acclaim in Hollywood. Through it all, he remained the salty, down-to-earth former rodeo cowboy from West Texas who could talk his way into—or out of—most any situation. More than forty photographs, including rare behind-the-scenes glimpses of the stars Hinkle met and befriended along the way, complement this rousing, never-dull memoir.

Hunting with Barracudas: My Life in Hollywood with the Legendary Iris Burton ReviewLike many gay boys who grew up in a small town, Chris Snyder dreamed of being part of the excitement, glitz and fame of Hollywood. As he went through school, he came to the realization that his ideal role would likely be behind the scenes, as an agent, helping to find talent and guide them to their success. After an internship at Warner Brothers, he accepted a job as the assistant to the legendary independent agent, Iris Burton, a Hollywood icon who had guided the career of countless child stars for decades.
Iris warned Chris that she was not easy to work for, an understatement that he would often live to regret for the next thirteen years in the 24/7 personal servitude-like employ of that sarcastic, self-possessed but often brilliant star maker. Chris did get a chance to see Hollywood from a vantage point that nobody else could offer, and to work with up and coming stars such as Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Harnett, Kirsten Dunst, the Olsen twins, and many others, and dealt with a myriad of Hollywood studios, publicists, managers and competing agents. The highlight of his career, and a primary focus of the book, was being witness to one major star's self-destruction: the gradual downfall and drug-related death of River Phoenix, a major event for both Iris and Chris, which signaled a definite shift in the operation of her agency. By this time, Iris was an industry fossil while most agents were half her age, and large, aggressive agencies had already eaten up or destroyed independent agencies like hers. They lost clients, Iris became more and more difficult to work for, and Chris - who had already resigned several times but had been lured back by the needy and persuasive Iris - knew he had to get out of there, for no other reason than what the stress was doing to his health. Chris had no life outside of the agency, other than occasional one-nighters with selfish guys he met at a bar or a bathhouse. Working with Iris had also let him see how the larger agencies worked, stealing clients from each other, making it clear to him that he needed to make some changes in his choice of career.
If you enjoy HBO's "Entourage," you'll absolutely love seeing this look at stars relationships with Hollywood agents, currently and in the not so distant past. This memoir is well written, with genuine heart and soul evident in every detail about his love/hate relationship with Iris, and how it forced him to reassess what he wanted in his own life. I give it four dressing-room-door stars out of five.

Halfway to Hollywood: Diaries 1980--1988 ReviewI picked up the first of Michael Palin's diaries abnout a year ago and found it to be a most entertaining read. Seeing the behind-the-scenes machinations of one of the world's funniest troupes was amazing, but to see the gentle reflective family man behind the "lumberjack" who will forever be OK was a revelation. The book truly gave the reader the feeling of being a part of the Palin family besides sharing the insights of the diarist who, it turns out, is quite the Zelig in terms of who he knows and the various well-known people who became a part of his life.
I was enthusiastic but a bit leery when picking up the second book, Halfway to Hollywood. I did not see how it could be as enjoyable given that the bulk of the Python works could be seen in the proverbial rearview mirror. But if anything, this book is at least the equal of its predecessor...warm, revealing, and entertaining. I came away from the book with the realization that Palin may be one of the most grounded celebrities in the world.
Reading this work has made me go out and find some of his lesser-known works ( lesser known to US audiences )because I see this gentleman as someone I'd really like to spend more time with. These pages read like conversation with a friend...a very polite, very insightful friend who has left an indelible mark in the world.
I could not recommend this more.Halfway to Hollywood: Diaries 1980--1988 OverviewThe second volume of Michael Palin's diaries covers the bulk of the 1980s, a decade in which the ties binding the Pythons loosened—they made their last film Monty Pyton's Meaning of Life in 1983. For Michael, writing and acting took over much of his life, culminating in his appearances in A Fish Called Wanda, in which he played the hapless, stuttering Ken, and won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. Halfway to Hollywood follows Palin's torturous trail through seven movies and ends with his final preparations for the documentary that was to change his life—Around the World in 80 Days.

The Making of Some Like It Hot: My Memories of Marilyn Monroe and the Classic American Movie ReviewThe one key advantage to Tony Curtis's breezy memoir "The Making of Some Like It Hot" is that you can read in about as much time as it takes to watch the movie. Curtis and his ghostwriter, Mark A. Vieira, aren't particularly introspective and are given to using sub-Hemingway declamatory phrasings such as: "I've got a rich memory bank. It's bursting with treasures. Almost anything can open it up. A sound, a song, a scent, and memories come pouring out." (29) Maybe, but if so, Curtis's memories are only occasionally revealing. The book's focus rests on squarely on Marilyn Monroe: the two of them had a brief relationship, in 1950, before they both became famous, and, on the set of "Some Like It Hot," they briefly resumed it. Yet, Curtis's account only re-affirms what we have known about Monroe for decades - her erratic behavior, her lack of professionalism, and her emotional vulnerability. The book's biggest revelation is Curtis' claim to having fathered the child that Monroe miscarried in December 1958, while her marriage to Arthur Miller was unraveling.
Yet, the focus on Marilyn ultimately takes away from the story of the film. Yes, the famous accounts of the constant delays and near-crack-ups due to Monroe are duly recounted. But Curtis's descriptions of Billy Wilder, I.A.L. Diamond and even his co-stars Jack Lemmon, George Raft, and Joe E. Brown are amazingly one-dimensional. He loves and admires them all and is honored to be working with them - and that's all he really has to say. If you love the movie and don't know a thing about its troubled history, this book is an OK introduction. But, please wait for the paperback version -- this is way too slight to pay the hardcover list price. The Making of Some Like It Hot: My Memories of Marilyn Monroe and the Classic American Movie Overview

Palimpsest: A Memoir ReviewGore Vidal is brilliant, witty, clever, irreverent and a marvelous writer but I was a little disappointed with this first installment of his autobiography. His life has been more multi-faceted and exciting than almost anyone elses, but in some inexplicable way the telling of his story falls short. There was adequate amounts of "juicy gossip" and the obligatory details of many sexual exploits, but true revelation and introspection is lacking.
That is curious, considering Vidal has never been shy about speaking his mind and airing his (and everyone else) dirty laundry in public. He remains one of the most gifted American writers, but his true brilliance is in writing essays, not autobiography.Palimpsest: A Memoir Overview

The Accidental Millionaire: How to Succeed in Life Without Really Trying ReviewAs a wedding photographer, I found Gary's book to be both entertaining and thought provoking. Gary has a unique philosophy about life and success, and his stories are interesting and very funny. His book made me laugh and encouraged me to view my own situation as a photographer a little differently, and even motivated me to take a few more risks. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone interested in business and photography. The Accidental Millionaire: How to Succeed in Life Without Really Trying OverviewThe Accidental Millionaire is the memoir of Gary Fong, would-be slacker who revolutionized wedding photography, inventor of popular photography aids, entrepreneur, contrarian, bon vivant and a man who really, really didn't want to become a doctor. A first-generation Chinese-American, Gary was raised in one of Los Angeles' least-desirable neighborhoods and was forced to deal―in his own quirky and often very funny way―with the burdens of poverty, crime and his parents' relentless aspirations. These issues almost overwhelmed him until he had a dramatic epiphany. Spotting a bumper sticker that read "Since I gave up hope, I feel much better," Gary promptly did just that.He stopped trying and started succeeding. At turns hilarious, insightful and instructive, The Accidental Millionaire is Horatio Alger-meets-David Sedaris. Turning the traditional self-help principles upside down, The Accidental Millionaire disdains the goal-oriented approaches of traditional self-help philosophies. Sometimes not knowing where you are going is the best possible way to get there.

Dancing With the Devil: How Puff Burned the Bad Boys of Hip-Hop (Volume 1) ReviewDid you ever want to know what it's like rolling with Diddy and being a part of the world-famous Bad Boy Records? Mark Curry gives you his experience with the mogul in Dancing With The Devil: How Puff Burned the Bad Boys of HipHop. Curry fans away the smoke and dismantles the mirrors with his debut release as an author. What you will find is the good, the bad and gritty lifestyle that Diddy provides to those artists unfortunate to get caught up in the Bad Boy empire.
If you grew up listening to HipHop during the Bad Boy era, Dancing With The Devil will give you an intriguing history of rap music during that time from a person lived it. Curry's attention to detail and ability to weave his personal experiences and research makes this book easy to read and hard to put down. This is more than an expose from a disgruntled artist. Dancing With the Devil is a journey that separates the fact from the fiction. This book shows you the music industry for what it is -- harsh and cut throat. If you can go online, Google and YouTube will be your best friend as you journey with Mark Curry through the maze of music, murders and mayhem.
Once you finish with this book, you will have taken a trip that few have the heart to speak about. Dancing With The Devil is more than a one-sided account of a wannabe artists mad at the world. You will have a thorough understanding of why artists such as The L.O.X., Faith Evans, 112, Total, etc. are no longer a part of Bad Boy's roster. You will hear those Bad Boy classics in a new light once you gain the understanding of why Diddy added his chatter to songs and his presence to the videos.
You might even feel sorry for current Bad Boy artists such as Danity Kane (or what's left of them), Day 26 and Da Band. The infamous contract signing scenarios take on a new meaning once you are aware of Diddy's history of jerking people with terrible deals. Curry acts more like a journalist than anything else as he sifts through tons of information and personal experiences to show how the music industry can promise you diamonds with intentions of giving you coal.
Curry's Dancing With The Devil can easily be considered Bad Boy Records' version of Fredericks Dannen's The Hit Men.

Book ReviewerDancing With the Devil: How Puff Burned the Bad Boys of Hip-Hop (Volume 1) OverviewHe has recorded with the biggest stars in the music business. He wrote many of the hits that made Sean "Puffy" Combs one of the richest men alive. On the surface, the multi-million dollar empire that Puff built looks like the stuff of dreams. But after working with Puff for a decade, Curry discovered that Bad Boy Entertainment is not, as Puff promised, a place where dreams come true. No, rather it is a shell game comprised of contracts designed to rob artists of their time, dreams and publishing rights. Dancing With the Devil reveals startling new details about key events in the fast paced, controversial (and sometimes deadly) world of Hip-Hop.In revealing the dark side of the industry, Curry hopes to provide a road map for reforms necessary to prevent artists ending up in poverty, in prison or in the grave.Mark Curry has appeared on the following albums:Gangsta Shi-Dangerous MC'sAmerican DreamMark Curry has appeared on the following singles:Bad Boy for Life

Hollywood's Hellfire Club: The Misadventures of John Barrymore, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn and the Bundy Drive Boys Review
Greg Mank has left the haunted mansion of golden age horror film critiques and heads into Hollywood Babylon territory with his newest book; and what he finds would have Kenneth Anger gasping for breath. Mank, with his coauthors Charles Heard and Bill Nelson, tells the tale of the Bundy Drive Boys, a collective of fast living and hard drinking Hollywood actors, writers and artists--- all committed to their friendship and the right to destroy their careers, their families and themselves by any means necessary. Among the hell-raisers are John Barrymore, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, John Decker, William Fowler, John Carradine, Ben Hecht and Sadakichi Hartmann; and their stories of childhood tragedy, incest, rape, cannibalism (in a POW camp), drunken brawls, sexual conquests, and even an art forgery scam, will have your jaw hitting the floor.
I read HOLLYWOOD HELLFIRE CLUB in one sitting. My morbid curiosity (wondering just how much worse can things get for the Bundy Drive boys) simply would not let me put this book down. If you are a fan of Hollywood's Golden Age... or the last person to leave the scene of a train wreck, this book will surely entertain and/or horrify you!
Hollywood's Hellfire Club: The Misadventures of John Barrymore, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn and the Bundy Drive Boys OverviewThey made fans go crazy and censors apoplectic, spent fortunes faster than they made them, forged Rembrandts and hung them in major museums, went on trial for committing statutory rape with necrophiliac teenage girls, reinterpreted Hamlet as an incestuous mama's boy,and swilled immeasurable quantities of spirits during week-long parties on wobbly yachts.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future: Twists and Turns and Lessons Learned ReviewThis tiny volume-- barely bigger than a Poptart -- will only take a half-hour or so to read. Author Michael J. Fox of television and movie fame has penned this classic little book for graduates, and it's chock full of insight, humor and interesting stories from his life.
Right up front high-school-dropout Fox poses a question to the reader: "What the hell were you thinking?" He has since earned a GED (General Equivalency Degree) and several honorary college diplomas, but all in all Fox has learned much more in Life 101: "an amazingly comprehensive education, albeit unstructured, and often unbidden."
After listing other accomplished people who also bailed on formal education (including the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp and Ben Franklin), Fox dives into stories from his youth. For example, Fox learns economics through his experiences as a teenage actor, before being cast in Family Ties, dealing with agents and taxes. Later he learns deeper lessons as a recovering alcoholic, family man and as a person stricken with Parkinson's disease.
The overall impression is of a grateful and self-deprecating man with hard-won wisdom, writing with a light touch.
Another good book for a recent grad is Dr. Seuss's incomparable Oh, the Places You'll Go!.
Here's the chapter list:
Prologue: Finally... The Beginning
Part One
Two Schools
When Am I Ever Gonna Use This Stuff?
Part Two
Economics
Comparative Literature
Physics
Political Science
GeographyPart Three
Pay Attention Kid, You Might Learn Something
Part Four

The Beginning... FinallyA Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future: Twists and Turns and Lessons Learned OverviewMichael J. Fox abandoned high school to pursue an acting career, but went on to receive honorary degrees from several universities and garner the highest accolades for his acting, as well as for his writing. In his new book, he inspires and motivates graduates to recognize opportunities, maximize their abilities, and roll with the punches--all with his trademark optimism, warmth, and humor. In A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future, Michael draws on his own life experiences to make a case that real learning happens when "life goes skidding sideways." He writes of coming to Los Angeles from Canada at age eighteen and attempting to make his way as an actor. Fox offers up a comically skewed take on how, in his own way, he fulfilled the requirements of a college syllabus. He learned Economics as a starving artist; an unexpected turn as a neophyte activist schooled him in Political Science; and his approach to Comparative Literature involved stacking books up against their movie versions.
Replete with personal stories and hilarious anecdotes, Michael J. Fox's new book is the perfect gift for graduates.

Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards ReviewAl Kooper has been rightly called the "Forrest Gump" of rock and roll. Throughout the 60's and 70's he seemed to turn up as a producer or band member with the right group of musicians until he either checked out of a band (the first electric Bob Dylan tour in 1965) or was thrown out (Blood, Sweat and Tears). Over the course of 40 years he's amassed an amazing amount of experiences that he's collected in Backstage Passes and Back Stabbing Bastards. This is the third edition of his music biography first published in 1979, then updated in the mid-90's, and now reissued covering 1998 to the present. "BP&BB" reads very much like a long-form interview you'd see in Rolling Stone (when it was good) or MOJO (always good). While he's never quite gone beyond cult figure status on his own, behind the scenes he's worked with some legends, most notably Bob Dylan and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Dylan pops up at various times throughout the book and Al's stories about him are alternately revealing but mostly hilarious. It was Dylan who gave Kooper his "calling card" to rock stardom when he overruled producer Tom Wilson and turned up the organist on "Like a Rolling Stone". The organist was Kooper, who'd BS'd his way onto the session and only jumped on the organ (an instrument he couldn't turn on let alone play) when Mike Bloomfield showed up and shattered Kooper's guitar hero dreams just by tuning up. That session would be both a blessing and a curse for Kooper, who got a ton of session work from producers looking for "that Dylan sound" but left Al wanting something more substantive musically. Enter Dylan, who dragged him onstage at the legendary Newport Folk Festival when he went electric. Al sets the record straight on that show and has a much different version of the event than the history books because he was RIGHT THERE. He was also "right there" when Bob went to Nashville to record "Blonde on Blonde". Al's relationship with Dylan has certainly evolved over the years and from his stories you get the impression that Bob's been doing everything he can to run away from his legacy instead of embracing it.
From there, he joined the Blues Project until they imploded. Organized and performed at Monterey Pop, then formed Blood Sweat and Tears until he was ousted by their drummer following their debut album. That might be the end of the story right? Wrong! Taking the phrase "if you can't beat `em, join `em" to heart, he became a staff producer at CBS Records under "Captain Clive" Davis. His first project would be the legendary "Super Session" album with Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Kooper's work with "Bloomers' is a case of missed opportunities, when things were good with him they were very good. They would produce 3 albums together but Mike could be exasperating to deal with. He only appeared on ½ of "SS" and "The Live Adventures", leaving suddenly midway through both due to chronic insomnia and/or a heroin addiction that eventually took his life.
After leaving CBS, he relocated to Atlanta with the idea of forming his own record label (ala` Phil Walden at Capricorn Records). While scouting local talent he spotted a guitar army from Jacksonville and "Sounds of the South's" first artist was Lynyrd Skynyrd. LS seem to have a love/hate relationship with Kooper. While grateful for producing their first 3 albums (as well as hits like "Free Bird", "Gimme 3 Steps" and "Sweet Home Alabama") his production methods seemed to soften the powerhouse sound they had live. It's no wonder he was immortalized as "Mr. Yankee Slicker" in the song "Workin' for MCA".
The one story I wished he'd expanded on was playing with Jimi Hendrix on "Electric Ladyland". They'd met at Monterey Pop and Al received one of Jimi's Strats as a thank-you for his work. That guitar would prove to be more trouble than it was worth later on.
The last 10 years have been something of a rough road for Al. He became an associate professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, became a grandfather, and endured a long recovery from a debilitating eye disorder. But he's still out playing live (with his academic colleagues no less!) and his dry wit is still there, can't wait for volume 4!
Highly recommended!
Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards OverviewÂA rock 'n roll classic, back in print, updated and revised.ÂÂOne of the funniest rock memoirs ever, Al Kooper's legendary ÂBackstage Passes is available again! American Prince: A Memoir ReviewThis book needs to be read in conjunction with Mr. Curtis's previous autobiography: Tony Curtis the autobiography by Tony Curtis (Author)and Barry Paris, which I found to be a far better book. The text is virtually identical, except for the removal of Mr. Paris's notes which filled in the background story. The biggest difference is that whereas the first book was kind to costars, ex-wives and everyone but Marilyn Monroe, Shelly Winters and his mother, the current memoirs tell all and trash the dead (except for Ms. Monroe who has been transformed into "the great love of my early youth", with nary a peep about the immoral drug abusing self-destructive narcissistic woman previously recollected. Whereas in his previous book, if he hadn't a good word to say about someone, he would merely note that "we had our differences", this time the conveniently dead come in for more savage recollections.
I was never a fan of Tony Curtis, he simply happened to be in films that I saw from time to time. His name on a marquee would not draw me into the cinema, but I enjoyed his first bio for the insight into movie making, especially the cost accounting, and finished it with a respect for the author's discretion. Sadly, this latest effort has changed that opinion. The book is simply a rehash with a few unkind and salacious titbits thrown in.

American Prince: A Memoir Overview"Curtis spares few intimate details about his years as a Hollywood lothario, including his teenage affair with a redheaded, ponytailed Marilyn Monroe."–USA TodayHe was the Golden Boy of the Golden Age. Dashing and debonair, Tony Curtis arrived on the scene in a blaze of bright lights and celluloid. His good looks, smooth charm, and natural talent earned him fame, women, and adulation–Elvis copied his look, and the Beatles put him on their Sgt. Pepper album cover. But the Hollywood life of his dreams brought both invincible highs and debilitating lows. Now, in his captivating, no-holds-barred autobiography, Tony Curtis shares the agony and ecstasy of a private life in the public eye.Curtis revisits his immense body of work–including the classics Houdini, Spartacus, and Some Like It Hot–and regales readers with stories of his associations with Frank Sinatra, Laurence Olivier, and director Billy Wilder, as well as paramours Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe, among others. Written with humor and grace, American Prince is a testament to the power of living the life of one's dreams.

The Brothers Warner ReviewI read "The Brothers Warner" with great interest and curiosity. Author, Ms. Cass Warner Sperling has kept her unspoken "promise" made to Grandpa Harry (patriarch of the Warner brothers) at his deathbed when she was a ten year old girl, to convey to others his deep beliefs and ideals.
I rate it 5 stars because the story and writing style paints an incredible picture of not just another "rags to riches" story but one of tragedy and great sacrifice leading to an enduring legend of the motion picture industry directly because of the "can do and make it go right" attitudes of the Warners.
From the family gold watch (later to be hocked in order to secure payment for the brothers first projector) placed in 1883 into the secret pocket of Benjamin Warner for his immigration to America into New York and the arrival of wife Pearl and children less than a year later, to a realization of a movie empire that had as its motto "Educate, entertain, and enlighten" which is a Hollywood legacy.
A must read for movie buffs and those interested in the beginnings of Hollywood. This is a book that has "all the right stuff" for the making of a fascinating mini-series as told by granddaughter Cass and others.
Shelley Abate, movie buff and avid reader.
The Brothers Warner OverviewThe BROTHERS WARNER, formerly titled "Hollywood Be Thy Name:The Warner Brothers Story", is the definitive family biography and intimate portrait of the four legendary Warner brothers. It unfolds and is told through the eyes of Harry Warner's granddaughter, Cass Warner Sperling and in the voices of others who knew them.
