Careers by Design: A Business Guide for Graphic Designers ReviewThis book is 199 pages of fluffy copywriting. There's no substance!
I'll find myself reading a section that feels like a long winded introduction, then...POOF...onto the next topic. Over and over again.
The target audience of this book (Designers) is too broad. Because of that, everything is vague generalizations. Maybe Goldfarb could write about some specifics if the demographic was narrowed down to only one of the following: Graphic Designers, Multimedia Designers, Freelance Designers, etc.
If you need this book to tell you that a resume and portfolio are important to finding a new job, then by all means, pick up a copy. But if you've taken ANY classes in design or have ANY work experience, don't waste your time...Careers by Design: A Business Guide for Graphic Designers OverviewLeading headhunter Roz Goldfarb reveals her time-proven secrets for survival and success in the graphic design industry. Through her work with hundreds of corporations around the world, she provides readers a treasure trove of valuable information for thriving in this creatively driven business, including updated hiring criteria, the latest developments in technology, and the marketplace affecting design careers.Discussion in this revised and expanded third edition includes: jobs, hiring practices, salaries, portfolios, resumes, networking, headhunters, training, freelancing, and more, with a special focus on the new design disciplines, training requirements, and opportunities for the Internet. Careers by Design should be on the desk of every ambitious graphic designer. . . . If you are looking to secure an even more successful future, Careers by Design is a must-read.î óDesign Management Journal.

Cinema Treasures: A New Look at Classic Movie Theaters ReviewReview of CINEMA TREASURES, October, 2004 by James H. Rankin
It is always a pleasure to welcome any significant contribution to the weal of theatrical lore, and the 208-page volume "Cinema Treasures: A New Look at Classic Movie Theatres" by Ross Melnick and Andreas Fuchs, is certainly a fine 'treasure' of a chronicle of the architectural treasures this book so well covers. In fact, it is really two books in one, for it is first a meticulously researched survey of the eras of movie exhibition, and secondly a series of capsule descriptions of 30 notable examples of those cinema treasures still operating. The two young men who bring us this handsome, hardbound volume reflect some 35 years between them of theatre research and operation, and thus their heartfelt devotion to the genre is sincere, accurately related, and enthusiastically delivered. The quality of prose shows skill beyond their years.
The large book (12x10-1/2 inches) is printed on heavy, glossy paper within black cloth covers with only the spine stamped in gold, but the heavy paper jacket over it is a fitting cover since its full front color image behind the title is of the Grand Lake Theatre of Oakland, California, and this alone warrants one applying a plastic film wrap in order to protect it. The image there shows the auditorium of one of the survivors of the glorious days of the movie palace and ironically shows on its stage a portion of the grand house curtain of the long-lost and lamented Fox Theatre once of San Francisco, and is thus a visual summation of the tumult of loss and survival of two significant theatres into our day. This sturdily bound coffee table book is heavy on illustrations with at least one visual on each page, and most are in color, but this is far more than a picture book!
The Preface and nine chapters describe in great and fascinating detail the progress of the cinema in the USA in terms of the technological, sociological, and economic timeline of this art form, and the consequent effect of these factors upon the architecture of theatres and cinemas that we have come to love. This is not a book about theatre architecture per se, but its extensive research in related topics is reflected in the 12 columns of fine print on three pages which comprises the 550 end Notes. Such a large total is unusual in a scholarly university publication, but in a general market book like this, it is astonishing, especially when coupled with the 148 entries in the Resources listing. The only disappointment with this scholarly aspect is the somewhat insufficient Index in which the absence of many proper nouns, such as names of people and theatres mentioned, can lead one to assume they are not to be found, and the careful listing of all such is a basic for any volume wanting to be regarded as serious research material. For example, the little-known curiosity of "Screeno" is described on page 99, but not listed in the Index. A theatre not insignificant to the lineage of exhibition is the Alhambra in Milwaukee, which is discussed in some detail on pages 19-21, but neither it, the location, nor its proprietor, Herman Fehr (identified as "Howard Fehr," at first, but later corrected to "Herman" on page 33) are mentioned anywhere in their 138-line Index. These are but a few of many such examples. Given the careful end Notes and Resources listings, this reviewer can only conclude that a more complete Index was offered, but the publisher (accustomed to hobby books for the motor vehicle market) declined to spend for more such supposedly nonessential pages.
In a sense, this work picks up where that landmark book of 1961: "The Best Remaining Seats, The Story of the Golden Age of the Movie Palace" by the late Ben M. Hall, leaves off. It repeats with additions the survey of theatres that Mr. Hall did, but also continues to our day through the eras of post war, single large-format screens, the arrival of the multiplex, then the megaplex and a discussion of a new trend that is starting to bring a version of the luxurious movie palace back to us! Each of these is given a chapter with a well-written introduction and essay, and concluded with a box titled "Curtain Call" which is a needed necrology of sorts that tells us the outcome of most of the theatres mentioned in the text, some of which are listed there as still with us in one form or another, along with their dates of operation, addresses, and ID numbers on the CinemaTreasures web site, for future reference.
Aside from the nine well written chapter heads, are the 30 profiles of notable "cinema treasures" with us today, and these constitute more than a travelogue to help one find a good place to see a movie -- vintage or otherwise. Each one has several photos, modern and antique if possible, arranged on facing buff color pages with the notable history, features, and lore of each described and their CT IDs given along with their web page addresses (URLs). Several movie palaces are included here, such as the Fox in Atlanta, the Music Box in Chicago, and the Palace in Canton, Ohio (where there is the unfortunate mistake of characterizing the Organ Screens as "fake box seats" on either side of the proscenium, and the Vertical Sign on the facade as a "blade sign," a term unknown to those who designed them). Mostly, however, the pages are about individual theatres/cinemas that reflect the smaller venues across the nation, and thereby bring to light the often surprisingly good features and designs of places we would all like to visit and may not have known of but for their fine expositions here.
The only real flaw I can find in this opus is that it is not longer, with more theatres profiled, or at least a listing of those they knew were worthy, but were forced to leave out. This comprehensive effort will not soon be equaled, especially in light of its being a treasure twice over.Cinema Treasures: A New Look at Classic Movie Theaters OverviewMore than 100 years after the first movie delighted audiences, movie theaters remain the last great community centers and one of the few amusements any family can afford. While countless books have been devoted to films and their stars, none have attempted a truly definitive history of those magical venues that have transported moviegoers since the beginning of the last century. In this stunningly illustrated book, film industry insiders Ross Melnick and Andreas Fuchs take readers from the nickelodeon to the megaplex and show how changes in moviemaking and political, social, and technological forces (e.g., war, depression, the baby boom, the VCR) have influenced the way we see movies.Archival photographs from archives like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and movie theater ephemera (postcards, period ads, matchbooks, and even a "barf bag") sourced from private collections complement Melnick's informative and engaging history. Also included throughout the book are Fuchs' profiles detailing 25 classic movie theaters that have been restored and renovated and which continue to operate today. Each of these two-page spreads is illustrated with marvelous modern photographs, many taken by top architectural photographers. The result is a fabulous look at one way in which Americans continue to come together as a nation. A timeline throughout places the developments described in a broader historical context."We've had a number of beautiful books about the great movie palaces, and even some individual volumes that pay tribute to surviving theaters around the country. This is the first book I can recall that focuses on the survivors, from coast to coast, and puts them into historical context. Sumptuously produced in an oversized format, on heavy coated paper stock, this beautiful book offers a lively history of movie theaters in America , an impressive array of photos and memorabilia, and a heartening survey of the landmarks in our midst, from the majestic Fox Tucson Theatre in Tucson, Arizona to the charming jewel-box that is the Avon in Stamford, Connecticut. I don't know why, but I never tire of gazing at black & white photos of marquees from the past; they evoke the era of moviemaking (and moviegoing) I care about the most, and this book is packed with them. Cinema Treasures is indeed a treasure, and a perfect gift item for the holiday season. - Leonard Maltin"Humble or grandiose, stand-alone or strung together, movie theaters are places where dreams are born. Once upon a time, they were treated with the respect they deserve. In their heyday, historian Ross Melnick and exhibitor Andreas Fuchs write in Cinema Treasures, openings of new motion-picture pleasure palaces that would have dazzled Kubla Khan 'received enormous attention in newspapers around the country. On top of the publicity they generated, their debuts were treated like the gala openings of new operas or exhibits, with critics weighing in on everything from the interior and exterior design to the orchestra.' Handsomely produced and extensively illustrated, Cinema Treasures is detailed without being dull and thoroughly at home with this often neglected subject matter. Its title would have you believe it is a celebration of the golden age of movie theaters. But this book is something completely different: an examination of the history of movie exhibition, which the authors accurately call 'a vastly under-researched topic.'" - Los Angeles Times

Design Research: Methods and Perspectives ReviewBeware! This book has an attractive title for design researchers. I expected it to be a manual that might be useful, for example, to PhD students in design. But it is not. It is hugely disappointing. It has usurped the title `design research' for what is largely innovation management prattle.
It's a book for designers, not students. But I'm not sure what designers would get from it. Inspiration to engage more in user research? Perhaps. Encouragement to delve deeper into research methods, and to learn more? No; because the references and further reading are extremely limited. For instance, two potentially useful chapters, overviews of quantitative and qualitative methods respectively, have just one reference between them, and that's to Cooper's The Inmates are Running the Asylum, in the qualitative methods chapter.Design Research: Methods and Perspectives OverviewThe tools of design research, writes Brenda Laurel, will allow designers"to claim and direct the power of their profession." Often neglected in the variouscurricula of design schools, the new models of design research described in thisbook help designers to investigate people, form, and process in ways that can maketheir work more potent and more delightful. "At the very least," Peter Lunenfeldwrites in the preface, "design research saves us from reinventing the wheel. At itsbest, a lively research methodology can reinvigorate the passion that so often fadesafter designers join the profession."The goal of the book is to introduce designersto the many research tools that can be used to inform design as well as to ideasabout how and when to deploy them effectively. The chapter authors come from diverseinstitutions and enterprises, including Stanford University, MIT, Intel, Maxis,Studio Anybody, Sweden?s HUMlab, and Big Blue Dot. Each has something to say abouthow designers make themselves better at what they do through research, andillustrates it with real world examples--case studies, anecdotes, and images. Topicsof this multi-voice conversation include qualitative and quantitative methods, performance ethnography and design improvisation, trend research, culturaldiversity, formal and structural research practice, tactical discussions of designresearch process, and case studies drawn from areas as unique as computer games, museum information systems, and movies. Interspersed throughout the book areone-page "demos," snapshots of the design research experience. Design Researchcharts the paths from research methods to research findings to design principles todesign results and demonstrates the transformation of theory into a richlysatisfying and more reliably successful practice.

Game Design Workshop, Second Edition: A Playcentric Approach to Creating Innovative Games (Gama Network Series) ReviewThe top rating is well-deserved -- this book is both thorough and well-written. Fullerton provides in-depth discussion and a progressive approach to introducing the material. It begins with the absolute basics, discussing the basics of where game ideas come from, and ends with a treatise on the inner-workings of the game publishing industry.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about game development, as a trade, and especially for anyone looking to do it as a profession.
There were so many things to love about this book, but three things really stand out in my mind as being particularly awesome:
1. The "Designer Perspective" sidebars (insight into how some famous game designers got started and some behind-the-scenes knowledge about the industry)
2. The focus on iterative-design (prototype and test early and often)
3. The Exercises (real application exercises that hold your hand through the development of games, and of yourself as a career designer)
There were basically only two things I *didn't* like about this book, and they are purely circumstantial.
The first thing is that this book is college-textbook dense. Seriously. The page-count is just shy of 450 pages, and each page is divided into two columns, with a relatively small font-size. It was a beast to get through. There were many times when finishing the book felt like a daunting task, particularly towards the end.
The second thing that I wished was different was that the book's focus changes almost completely to digital game development (video games). The first half of the book was about basic game development, and so it could apply to either tabletop games or digital games; but as the book progresses, it makes a clear shift towards digital game development.
Realistically, this is not surprising -- the video game industry is gigantic, with revenues exceeding Box Office sales, and it keeps growing. The market for tabletop games is vastly smaller, domestically, and although it enjoys a much larger market share in Europe, particularly Germany, it is still comparatively diminuitive. So this particular nitpick is purely arbitrary, on my part -- I don't begrudge the authors for their decision regarding the content.Game Design Workshop, Second Edition: A Playcentric Approach to Creating Innovative Games (Gama Network Series) OverviewMaster the craft of game design so you can create that elusive combination of challenge, competition, and interaction that players seek. This design workshop begins with an examination of the fundamental elements of game design; then puts you to work in prototyping, playtesting and redesigning your own games with exercises that teach essential design skills. Workshop exercises require no background in programming or artwork, releasing you from the intricacies of electronic game production, so you can develop a working understanding of the essentials of game design.Features:* A design methodology used in the USC Interactive Media program, a cutting edge program funded in part of Electronic Arts.* Hands-on exercises demonstrate key concepts, and the design methodology* Insights from top industry game designers, including Noah Falstein, American McGee, Peter Molyneux

Designs on Film: A Century of Hollywood Art Direction ReviewThe product copy above does not do justice to this splendid and sumptuous doorstopper on Hollywood art direction. The photographs are the payoff here, literally hundreds of production stills detailing on-the-set constructions and activity. My eye tells me that I have not seen most of these photos before in other Hollywood books. I think the book would serve better if it cut off after the 1970s and included more on the silent era and 1930s when the concept of art direction in film was nurtured and flourished. The 80s are focused on special effects and much of the new millennium material look like nothing more than Town & Country layouts. Nonetheless, the bulk of the book will take the Golden Era Hollywood fan to another place and time in American history, creative and socially.Designs on Film: A Century of Hollywood Art Direction Overview
Who can forget the over-the-top, white-on-white, high-gloss interiors through which Fred Astaire danced in Top Hat? The modernist high-rise architecture, inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, in the adaptation of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead? The lavish, opulent drawing rooms of Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence? Through the use of film design-called both art direction and production design in the film industry-movies can transport us to new worlds of luxury, highlight the ornament of the everyday, offer a vision of the future, or evoke the realities of a distant era. In Designs on Film, journalist and interior designer Cathy Whitlock illuminates the often undercelebrated role of the production designer in the creation of the most memorable moments in film history. Through a lush collection of rare archival photographs, Whitlock narrates the evolving story of art direction over the course of a century-from the massive Roman architecture of Ben-Hur to the infamous Dakota apartment in Rosemary's Baby to the digital CGI wonders of Avatar's Pandora.

Drawing on insights from the most prominent Hollywood production designers and the historical knowledge of the venerable Art Directors Guild, Whitlock delves into the detailed process of how sets are imagined, drawn, built, and decorated. Designs on Film is the must-have look book for film lovers, movie buffs, and anyone looking to draw interior design inspiration from the constructions and confections of Hollywood. Whitlock lifts the curtain on movie magic and celebrates the many ways in which art direction and set design allow us to lose ourselves in the diverse worlds showcased on the big screen.

Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business ReviewI found this book to not only be an interesting read but very informative too. It starts off as a guide for those who have never freelanced before but as you move on through the chapters it suggests that you have started your business and by the end it talks about the future.
It is a great book for those who are starting out at the very beginning but is also useful for people (like me) who have been working for themselves for a while. There is information on setting up a portfolio, what kind of person you need to be to be able to do this sort of work and has a big focus on those that work for clients.
For me, the best parts of the book were the profile interviews with other creative freelancers who are successful in their own business as well as the chapters on pricing, agents and balancing work and personal life.
The pricing chapter was particularly helpful to me, so much so that I actually wished I could hug the authors when I read it.
I also appreciated the chapter on finding an agent and whether that might be the right decision for you. The balancing of work and personal life (something I'm not that great at) was also helpful, especially from a standpoint from someone who's been-there-done-that.
The book is honest and funny at times and it doesn't make the world of freelancing sound like a whole lot of long lunches and never ending holidays, which I think adds to its usefulness. But it doesn't make it sound like a hell that you'll wish you never entered either. I will also note that while it is written for an American audience, other than the parts about becoming a business in a legal sense and the tax requirements, it seems pretty universal and certainly applicable to Australian and international readers.
I will be keeping this book close to hand so that I can refer to it over and over, I think it will be a great resource and I'm already considering buying another copy for a friend of mine who I think will benefit from it too.
Thanks to Meg and Joy for writing this resource, I think it's the kind of book that will stay relevant for years to come.Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business OverviewAs the hipster classic Craft, Inc. did for crafters, this book will teach all types of creativesillustrators, photographers, graphic designers, animators, and morehow to build a successful business doing what they love. Freelancing pros Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Deangdeelert Cho explain everythingfrom creating a standout portfolio to navigating the legal issues of starting a business. Dressed: A Century of Hollywood Costume Design ReviewWowza, this book is incredible. The photographs and costume illustrations are really high quality. I haven't read all of this massive tome yet, but I've really loved what I've read and looked at so far. The book is basically comprised of 4 components. There are text chapters addressing costume design in each of the last 10 decades, then there are the gorgeous photos (lots and lots of color), many sketches that you probably will not see anywhere else, and finally, and this is the really juicy part, are the captions that accompany the images. The captions are quotes from directors, actors and designers and they are really lively and funny. You feel like you were in the fitting room with the actor. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves movies.Dressed: A Century of Hollywood Costume Design Overview
From the lavish productions of Hollywood's Golden Age through the high-tech blockbusters of today, the most memorable movies all have one thing in common: they rely on the magical transformations rendered by the costume designer. Whether spectacular or subtle, elaborate or barely there, a movie costume must be more than merely a perfect fit. Each costume speaks a language all its own, communicating mood, personality, and setting, and propelling the action of the movie as much as a scripted line or synthetic clap of thunder. More than a few acting careers have been launched on the basis of an unforgettable costume, and many an era defined by the intuition of a costume designer—think curvy Mae West in I'm No Angel (Travis Banton, costume designer), Judy Garland in A Star is Born (Jean Louis and Irene Sharaff, costume designers), Diane Keaton in Annie Hall (Ruth Morley, costume designer), or Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (Deborah Nadoolman Landis, costume designer).

In Dressed: A Century of Hollywood Costume Design, Academy Award-nominated costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis showcases one hundred years of Hollywood's most tantalizing costumes and the characters they helped bring to life. Drawing on years of extraordinary research, Landis has uncovered both a treasure trove of costume sketches and photographs—many of them previously unpublished—and a dazzling array of first-person anecdotes that inform and enhance the images. Along the way she also provides and eye-opening, behind-the-scenes look at the evolution of the costume designer's art, from its emergence as a key element of cinematic collaboration to its limitless future in the era of CGI.

A lavish tribute that mingles words and images of equal luster, Dressed is one book no film and fashion lover should be without.

Software Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System ReviewThis book isn't about implementing Visual Studio Team Systems, so don't expect details on setting up, configuring, or making use of VSTS in a daily work environment. What this book really covers is the high-level use of project data, reports and features in VSTS. The author himself says this is intended as a general book on software engineering practices, touching on how to use VSTS to get engineering done well. You'll have to look elsewhere for the nitty-gritty details on actually rolling VSTS into your organization's development environment
What you will find in this book are some well-written, well-thought guidelines on how to approach various aspects of the software development process. Frequently those guidelines will involve using products or features from VSTS, and the book does some nice analysis using those products.
Specifics which I found very good in the book included the great sidebars, the section on using coverage reports for development feedback, and the troubleshooting section. For example, some sidebars show you the specific MSDN heirarchy for finding specific documentation on an aspect of VSTS, helpful for that actual implementation stuff. (That's assuming Microsoft doesn't completely re-arrange MSDN's content structure as they seem wont to do with alarming frequency.) The portion on coverage feedback is great for developers understanding why coverage might change in unexpected fashions as they're moving through their work.
The troubleshooting chapter is seriously good stuff. Guckenheimer does a great job of tossing up many graphs with different data and showing how to interpret them. He shows how graph states might reflect problems on the project with scope creep, architectural mistakes, or various issues with defects such as reactivations or poor unit testing.
The book is definitely not for developers looking to learn more about VSTS, but rather for management and leads looking to understand how VSTS can help them effectively manage their projects will get a whole lot of use from the book.Software Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System OverviewSoftware Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System is written for a software team that is considering running a software project using Visual Studio Team System (VSTS). It is about the "why" of VSTS: its guiding ideas, why they are presented in certain ways, and how they fit into the process of managing the software lifecycle. This book is the next best thing to having an onsite coach who can lead the team through a consistent set of processes. It is a framework for thinking about software projects in a way that can be directly tooled by VSTS. It presents essential theory and practical examples to describe a realistic process for IT projects. This is a book that any team using or considering VSTS should read.
