WHO NEEDS HOLLYWOOD: The Amazing Story of a Small Time Filmmaker who Writes the Screenplay, Raises the Production Budget, Directs, and Distributes the #3 Movie of the Year ReviewThe inspiring story of Joe Camp's life and the events that led to producing Benji despite so much discouragement from others and so few resources provides insight into how to make a movie while sticking true to Camp's philosophy of always telling an emotionally engaging story. Looking back on his life, Camp views the failures and coincidences as positive things that led him to Benji. Much of his success relies on his attitude- he overcomes many obstacles every step of the way from selling people on the idea to distributing the film himself through persistence and the willingness to get his hands dirty, the gumption to do it himself and the courage to stick to what he believes to be the right idea even if it defies convention.
"Life is but a series of choices... your dreams can become reality by making the right choices and sticking with them: the choice of following your passion at all cost: the choice of persistence, of never giving up, because you can never fail unless you quit... turn your back on the naysayers. You are the driver of your destiny. Only you can accept the challenge and make your life extraordinary."
I recommend this book to people who loved Benji, are interested in film making, or want a motivational tale about really executing on your dreams.WHO NEEDS HOLLYWOOD: The Amazing Story of a Small Time Filmmaker who Writes the Screenplay, Raises the Production Budget, Directs, and Distributes the #3 Movie of the Year OverviewWho Needs Hollywood is an incredible story of slammed doors, rejection, ridicule, and ultimately a tenacity that brought home to Joe Camp the #3 movie of the year, with no help whatsoever from Hollywood. Author of the recent National Best Seller The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd, Camp believes that anything is possible if you work hard enough and have faith in yourself. He was told by industry "experts" not to bother with his first film; that it wouldn't work. He proved the experts wrong and now, after an award-winning career in movies and television, he's at it again with a brand new career as an author. His best seller The Soul of a Horse is in its seventh printing and is changing the lives of horses all across the planet for the better. With this new book he hopes to do the same for people. Camp has written, produced and directed seven theatrical motion pictures cumulatively grossing well over the equivalent of $600 million in today's dollars, making him one of the most successful independent filmmakers of all time. His new book, Who Needs Hollywood, is an inspiring insight into how to make things happen, against all odds, and confirmation that every dream is, in fact, possible.

Wheeling the Deal: The Outrageous Legend of Gordon Zahler, Hollywood's Flashiest Quadriplegic Review`Wheeling the Deal' moves along at a breathless speed, following the turns, twists, sharp ascents, and sudden drops in the lives of Gordon Zahler and his family. That it reads like a roller-coaster ride is the more surprising, for Zahler is a quadriplegic, whose rise in Hollywood is a testament to his true grit, quick wit, and his soaring, if sometimes off-base, imagination. Chip Jacob's engaging writing style also takes us on a few spurts, sudden stomach-dropping dips, and perilous somersaults, as he delivers us a warm-hearted and humorous view of a family whose characters we at once recognize as being like our own kin, and simultaneously find way over the top. The picture of Gordon Zahler painted by Jacobs is a complex one. At the end of the book you are still not sure how you feel about this indefatigable character. He is as brutal in his personal relationships as he is unrelenting in his drive to get every scrap of excitement he can out of his tenuous life. The indelible impression is astonishment at what power lies in the heart of a human being and what can be achieved even in the face of such devastating loss.Wheeling the Deal: The Outrageous Legend of Gordon Zahler, Hollywood's Flashiest Quadriplegic OverviewParalyzed from the neck down, Gordon Zahler rose from his deathbed to a fast-talking, Hollywood entrepreneur/idea man who traveled the world, lived hard, married, fantasized about water-skiing and chased his dreams to create one of the largest independent postproduction shops in Hollywood. While this is Jacobs story about his coming to grips with his deformed uncle, himself and his mother, the silent victim to Gordon's recklessness, Wheeling the Deal is also a tip of the hat to the man who turned his back on the notion of I can't.

How to Write a Selling Screenplay ReviewThere are so many books on screenwriting already in existence that the real question any reviewer must address when another one comes along is: if you could only afford to buy one of them, why should you buy this one and save the others for any book tokens you might receive at Christmas? The title of this review forms the basis of my answer to that question.
Chris Keane has made his living as a professional writer for decades, focusing mostly on novels and screenplays. His success has brought him many offers of teaching posts, and indeed, he spends a considerable part of each year teaching at Emerson, where he is an Associate Professor, and at the International Film and Television Workshops in Maine. All this makes him actuely aware of the nitty-gritty needs of both the fledgling screenwriter and the writer who has been over the course more than once, but who needs to re-learn key lessons. These lessons are so key that for much of the first part of the book, one feels like one is directing a question and answer session, rather than having questions answered in which one might possibly be interested. From the question of work habits to how to generate ideas, and what to do with them once you have them, through to characterisation, dialogue, and the scene as the nucleus of the screenplay, Keane is both judicious and generous with his hard-won wisdom.
The second half of the book puts theory into practice. It consists of the full text of Keane's screenplay 'The Crossing', with honest, detached critical commentary at the end of each scene or section. This allows the reader to see exactly what Keane is talking about in the first half of the book, to experience the emotion that his own work needs to generate, to feel for the characters, and then, with Keane's assistance, to stop and reflect on why he feels as he does. In the hands of a writer with a bigger ego but less talent, this method might well have had the reader reaching for the sick bag after only a few pages, but it works wonderfully here, and it seems to me that anyone wishing a career in screenwriting could not wish for clearer, more genuine exemplification.
A final point on this structural feature of Keane's indispensable book. Something else the inclusion of this constantly optioned but not yet produced screenplay teaches the would-be screenwriter is how tough his desired career can be, that he could write a screenplay as good as Keane's and still wait a long, long time to see it on the big screen, if indeed he ever does.
Other books on screenwriting claim to 'make it easy'. Keane's puts the emphasis exactly where it should be: on the work. How to Write a Selling Screenplay OverviewChristopher Keane has spent 20 years in the business, learning the truths--and the tricks--of writing a selling screenplay. In How to Write a Selling Screenplay, he takes writers through the entire process, from developing a story to finding the best agent. Using an annotated version of an often-optioned screenplay of his own, and citing examples from movies ranging from Casablanca and Lethal Weapon to Sling Blade and The English Patient, he discusses how to create three-dimensional characters, find a compelling story, build an airtight plot structure, fine-tune dialogue, and much more. Keane's tips on the difference between writing for film and television, as well as his advice on dealing with Hollywood movers and shakers, make this an essential companion for people writing their first--or their fortieth--screenplay.

An Actor and a Gentleman ReviewThis was an enjoyable book from start to finish. I have watched Mr. Gossett work his magic in movies and television shows over the years and loved all of his work. I had no idea what a wonderful life he has enjoyed to this moment. He has had his share of ups and downs but is still standing strong. You will be touched when you read of his experiences with racism but through his good upbringing, he was able to handle it with dignity and tact.
I thank him for sharing his life story and recommend it highly. He is truly an inspiration to all.
Go Lakers!!!!!

The Art of Teaching Music ReviewFor those who have read her previous two books "In Search of Music Education" and "Transforming Education," you'll find that "The Art of Teaching Music" carries a very different tone. Whereas the first two books were heavy philosophical readings filled with dialectics and ambiguities, this latest book is much more personal, easy to reading, and inspiring for teachers of all ages. Jorgensen continues with her style of plotting out dialectical tensions to discover truth, but supplements these tensions with her own personal antidotes. This makes the over all tone feel more like a conversation with a veteran teacher over issues you struggle with everyday, yet rarely recognize. It's very insightful, yet filled with warm moments. The content is broken into three large sections, what it is to be a teacher, the nature of musicality, and how music instruction should be conducted. Within each large section, there are smaller qualities that address the larger issue, which are broken down further to short two or three page dialects that define the qualities.
My overall impression is that it is a very well written and organized book that looks at many of the deeper foggy issues facing teachers in a very practical and comforting way. If you're looking for a challenging philosophical work to challenge previous theories or add insight to your own, I'd advice you to read her previous two book, but if you're looking for an thought provoking and gratifying reading without the heavy handed style of academia, I'd suggest this. The Art of Teaching Music Overview

How to Be Like Walt: Capturing the Disney Magic Every Day of Your Life ReviewJust when I thought I knew everything there was to know about Walt Disney, along comes this brilliant book. How to Be Like Walt shines fresh light on the person and character of Walt Disney, a man I never knew but have loved all my life. More than that, it encourages all of us that we can be like Walt, too - if we study his life, discover what drove him, learn from his failures and examine his interactions with others. There will never be another Walt, but we can all be like Walt if we want to be. This book tells us how. He wasn't perfect - but neither are you or I. Still, as the book says, the world would be a poorer place if it hadn't been for just one Walt Disney. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't mind being remembered for making my world better like he did.
How to Be Like Walt tells his story through the eyes of people who knew him and loved him, people who have admired his accomplishments, and people whose lives have been shaped by the force of his personality. It's the most complete picture of Walt Disney available to date from any book. In the bargain, we get lessons to apply to our own lives. Everything to gain and nothing to lose! Read it today.
How to Be Like Walt: Capturing the Disney Magic Every Day of Your Life OverviewAn inspiring biography of one of the most influential and beloved figures of the 21st century, based on more than a thousand interviews.
"I've read every book that has ever been written about Walt Disney, going back to some that were published in the 1930s. [How to Be Like Walt] is by far the most enjoyable to read of them all!"Tim O'Day, Disney Scholar"How to Be Like Walt is a fitting tribute to Walt's memory and an important contribution to the Disney legacy . . . Now more than ever, we need people with the qualities Walt had: optimism, imagination, creativity, leadership, integrity, courage, boldness, perseverance, commitment to excellence, reverence for the past, hope for tomorrow, and faith in God." Art Linkletter
How to Be Like is a "character biography" series: biographies that also draw out important lessons from the life of their subjects. In this new book-by far the most exhaustive in the series-Pat Williams tackles one of the most influential people in recent history.
While many recent biographies of Walt Disney have reveled in the negative, this book takes an honest but positive look at the man behind the myth. For the first time, the book pulls together all the various strands of Disney's life into one straightforward, easy-to-read tale of imagination, perseverance, and optimism. Far from a preachy or oppressive tome, this book scrapes away the minutiae to capture the true magic of a brilliant maverick.

Universal Studios Vs. The 1978 Battlestar Galactica Series: The Common Sense Manual ReviewFirst of all, let's get the positives out of the way. The author is clearly passionate about his subject matter: he honestly believes his ideas, which is always a big plus. Second, he's kind of right about his central (non-conspiratorial) premise. While I'm no fan of the older Battlestar Galactica, I recognize that it had a very different premise and it was clearly a family show meant to be enjoyed broadly. The newer one, produced by Ronald D. Moore, is harder science fiction, military science fiction, and appeals to a wholly different crowd. This much is true.
Oh, and it's short. It's in the 250s as far as pages go, but the margins are far enough into the page that there isn't much text cluttering the paper.
The author tells you on the very first page two very important things. First, that there is no documentation supporting his view - it's based on observation and conjecture - and that he writes in the style of his opponents on the Internet. The first point is fair: he doesn't claim the book to be a scholarly work, so I'm not going to knock his writing for it.
The second point, however, is part of what makes this book bad literature. I'm all for evolution of the English language, but this is nothing short of assault and battery on it. There are errors of all kinds throughout the book, both in spelling and grammar, and - at least for me - it ruins the reading experience. I would suggest the author clean it up a bit for future editions to make it easier and clearer. It shouldn't be hard, since it's not particularly complicated grammar in any case.
Another negative of the book is the author's tendency towards repetitive arguments. The author goes off on rants against opponents he has encountered on the Internet, or obstacles the 1978 Battlestar Galactica TV series has encountered in being remade, rants which are tangential, usually detract from the chapter's overall theme (though, granted, not always), and above all, are repeated several times in adjacent chapters, instead of being collected in a single one. I realize that some linking of ideas through the book is necessary, but this is pure overkill.
A third negative is the author's excessive reliance on italics as a crutch to emphasize comments. I'm all for getting Bonnie Hammer and professional wrestling the hell out of the Sci-Fi Channel offices, but the stylistic choice again ruins it, making it seem less legitimate. Furthermore, it ties into the previous negative, because many of these repeated arguments are more and more italicized as the text goes on.
Lastly, the author failed to do his research in calling Ronald D. Moore's series a failure, given the Nielsen ratings it has earned. I assume this is an example of the conspiracy against the 1978 series, but it's not explained in the text how the author knows this, or how the author knows the real ratings. I'm willing to entertain the notion that it's a cover-up, however, just because I don't work in that industry and thus can't say.
If the author could clean up the English and calm himself a little more, this would be a fine book. As it is, I have to say it's the product of good intentions that fail to translate into good literature.Universal Studios Vs. The 1978 Battlestar Galactica Series: The Common Sense Manual OverviewAn Eyewitness Account Of 30 Years Of Deliberate Mismanagement. This edition has been updated with new material.
