Disney: The Mouse Betrayed ReviewIt all boils down to the 'bottom line', doesn't it? For me, the underlying theme of this book was profits, profits, profits. Whatever it takes to increase profits, that's what Disney will do.
Walt Disney was a different kind of man than Michael Eisner. Walt wanted to create good, wholesome family entertainment - he knew if he did that, the money would come. Eisner, playing off Disney's well-earned reputation, used the profits from Disney classics and theme parks to bankroll projects that Walt would have been embarrassed to mention publicly.
There was a lot of anecdotal evidence in this book, and some reviewers claim that these two authors essentially had 'an axe to grind', or were pushing a conservative agenda. That thought occurred to me too, though I've discovered through other sources that Eisner and his people never really liked Walt Disney's "family values".
Disney is a business, and shareholders are entitled to a return on their money. Given the success of G-rated movies and wholesome family entertainment, the book makes you wonder why Disney would invest heavily in other forms that are certainly less profitable. But this book isn't trying to answer that question; it just sticks to providing insight into the new direction Disney is going, and the causes its management supports. Some of the 'behind the scenes' goings-on will surprise and shock you. The Mouse has its fingers in many pies, some quite unsavory. Ooops, careful, we must be 'tolerant'.

Pauline Frommer's Walt Disney World and Orlando (Pauline Frommer Guides) ReviewThis book really made my vacation at DisneyWorld. I'll admit I'm not a Disney 'fanatic'; I'd been once before and enjoyed it just fine, but hadn't thought about going back until this family reunion came up. I was put in charge of the DisneyWorld planning and bought several guidebooks -- this book was definitely the best.
It was clear that the author knew the parks inside and out, but he didn't seem to have 'drunk the Disney kool aid' if you know what I mean. For example, he pointed out rides that were disappointments and eating options that were overpriced, whereas the other guidebooks basically said it was all great, and gave you no caveats whatsoever.
I really appreciated the book's frankness and wonder if that's why it got those negative reviews from the folks who seem to go there over and over. Sometimes he was ironic about the parks too in a way that made me laugh out loud (never chuckled at a guidebook before).
I thought the book was very accurate. We ended up going the condo rental route thanks to this book (an option the other books barely mentioned but in this book there were a lot of details on it) and I have no doubt our group of 12 saved a good $2000 that way if not more.

The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland 2007 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewWe were just at Disneyland two weekends ago (spring break for some folks), and spent two days (Fri & Sat) at Disneyland and one day (Sun)at Disney California, this book was FANTASTIC! I read this on our two-day drive down to Anaheim and mapped out our days using the plans available in the book and the program guide I got off Disney's website for the days we would be there... truly we hardly waited in line at all and rode everything we wanted to and saw TONS of shows. We also had so much "extra" time we were able to do some of our favorites (Soarin' and Star Tours for example) twice. We only opted to get FAST PASSES twice (the book explains it, thankfully)because we didn't really need to use them much as we were so easily getting on everything we wanted to go on. Best tip... Get to the park EARLY (hardly anyone did this, it is a crazy fact!) and follow one of the plans, really you don't need to be a drill sergeant about it or anything! We simply lead our family through the parks in the recommended order and had three extremely fun, stress free days! We spent far more time in line for food than for rides or shows. We also stayed across the street from Disneyland at one of the hotels listed in the book, which made it REALLY easy to leave and come back so I must also recommend spending the extra money if you can, it sure was nice for us(Our kids are 8 and 6, fyi.) This book made Disney fun for all of us and hardly ANY fighting or breakdowns, and our 8 yr old has autism... Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World For Grown-Ups (Unofficial Guides) ReviewThis compact format of the "Unofficial Guide" is handy to carry compared to its larger counterpart "Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2000; Bob Sehlinger" but the information is basically the same. Tips to help with the Kids for are cut, as are some of the more lengthy reviews of hotels/attractions/restaurants.
This book aims and hits the mark with helpful hints for the Grown-up (are we ever grown-up?) visitor. However, to keep the book more compact there is a great deal of rich material left out that is useful for the first time visitor. The information is provided in a well-organized format that most will find useful. Common questions are answered, and the book provides resource lists, Web sites, and e-mail addresses.
Timesavers are included regarding attractions that are more along the adult taste, but who is to say that the author knows everyone's taste. One of the "Don't Bother" items for the Magic Kingdom is Mickey's ToonTown. For the more whimsical adult this can be a fun place and a hot spot to meet characters unclose and personal. After all what would a trip to WDW be without that old standard photo of you and "the Mouse" himself.
Where this book shines is pointing you towards the more "adult" attractions and events. With so much to do and experience at WDW a good guide is extremely helpful.
Using the planning tips in this and other guides hundreds of dollars can be saved. The How to Cut Costs section offers many ways to save money both in the planning stages as well as during the visit. While money may be no object to some, most people would rather with a little knowledge save some cash to happily spend it on all the souvenirs we must bring back to those not heading for the "World".
Overall as a handy guide easy to carry I would recommend this book for the "adult" traveler. Another handy to carry guide is "PassPorter Walt Disney World: The unique travel guide, planner, organizer, journal, and keepsake!" For serious planning a meatier guidebook is needed. I have found that the "Unofficial" guides offer the off the cuff, straight shooting opinions and have relied on them for years.
If this is your first trip to WDW then buy the more comprehensive guide and if you want a handy to carry reference then The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World for Grown-Ups is a great choice. If you are a repeat visitor you should be able to skip the larger version and go straight for the Grown-Ups guide. As WDW evolves so do the attractions but the goal is the same, HAVE FUN!Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World For Grown-Ups (Unofficial Guides) Overview

I thought the difficult economic issues were avoided as well as the analogy of the corporation to a Roman General and his army. With Tony Blair ever-whispering into Bush's ear, the British empire now American-powered, and Disney too a victim of Anglophilia, it is difficult to believe that American Yankees ever fought a war against the British, let alone two wars!

The Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World Resort, 3rd: How to Get the Most Out of the Best Disney Has to Offer ReviewWhereas most WDW guide books emphasize ways to make an expensive vacation (and let's be honest, ALL WDW vacations are expensive) more afordable, this book does just the opposite by highlighting all of the most expensive options available. Of course this is exactly what it claims to do, and it succeeds wonderfully. Only deluxe-grade resorts are discussed and restaurant reviews focus primarily on WDW's "signature" establishments (although others are discussed). The details provided, however, are exquisite. In a "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" sort of way, you can learn about the contents of the $2000/night luxury suites, chartered cruises, elegant spas, 13 course chefs' table meals, limo services, etc. Although many options for children are discussed (including $150 tea parties), the unspoken theme to this book seems to be how affluent adults can turn a "theme park vacation" into a high-end "resort vacation" that also happens to have theme parks (perhaps you can let your Nanny hustle the kids around the parks while you luxuriate in the spas and drink $150 bottles of wine). Although I am NOT the kind of person who looks for the over-the-top resort features, I DO enjoy higher-end dining, which was my primary reason for reading this book. I was not disappointed. All of the best restaurants in the parks, the resorts, and in nearby Orlando (including Universal) are reviewed to include atmoshpere, quality, price range, and sample menu items. This is not to say that the parks are not discussed. All of the "best" attractions at each park are discussed, and advice for how to maximize use of the sometimes overwhelming WDW tranportation system are very well explained. Although not as extensive as in some other books, sample "touring plans" are given to help you maximize the time you spend in the parks (inbetween your champagne brunches and garden tours). The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I bought it as a book on WDW, and quite a lot of time is spent on Universal, Sea World, Disney Cruises, and other non-Disney locations. If you have never been to WDW before I would recommend this as a "second guide" to have in addition to the various more complete guides on the Market (The "Unofficial Guide" being the most comprehensive), but if you are already somewhat familiar with WDW, this is an excellent guide if you are interested in "stepping up" your next visit or if you are planning a special event (e.g. birthday, anniversary, reunion, etc.)The Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World Resort, 3rd: How to Get the Most Out of the Best Disney Has to Offer OverviewDiscover the sophisticated side of Disney "Luxury means different things to different travelers-an elegant guest suite, a hotel atrium full of exotic blooms, a romantic dinner with fireworks as a backdrop. Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination (Vintage) ReviewHaving collected and read about Walt Disney and animation for 30+ years, I found that the only proper way to read Gabler's biography is as follow-up to the great book by Michael Barrier, "An Animated Man", also available on Amazon. Barrier gives the structure of Walt's life as centered on Walt's true loves: his animation and his parks. While Barrier's book is a very pleasant read, and gives insight in what made Walt tick. As a contrast, Gabler recites data as if it was a class in Latin and represents Walt as a kind of nut. Gabler clearly neither likes nor understands Walt. He also has no knowledge of--or love for--the medium of animation, and he keeps talking of Walt's "animations," an expression that is only used by people who have no idea what they are talking about. But he did have access to the Archives, and thus some things are only to be found in his book. There are many, many factual errors in Gabler's book. A huge list can be found on Barriers's site (Google "GablerErrata"). And as a final note, on that same site, one can read that Diane Disney Miller herself thinks the Gabler book is a gross misrepresentation of her father (Google "Diane_On_Gabler"). Married to the Mouse: Walt Disney World and Orlando ReviewRichard Foglesong is one hell of an investigative reporter. I know, I know - he's not a journalist, he's a college professor. But he writes like a journalist and reports like a journalist, and "Married To The Mouse" is a terrifically entertaining and penetrating look at the relationship between Disney and Orlando.
Unfortunately - and this only a minor point, really - Foglesong is also an academic. I say "unfortunately" because the academic portions of this book are far-and-away the least interesting. They are filled with urban planning buzzwords and jargon. They try to tie together in neat academic theories what were really power struggles between a big business and a comparatively small county government.
Foglesong is at his best when he tells us how things happened. How did Orlando build those roads that lured Disney to town? How did Disney get that crazy charter that makes the company an autonomous government? How did they abuse that charter to get perks that no other private business could dream of? How did Orlando and Orange County and Osceola County shirk their responsibilities to their taxpayers in failing to more forcefully confront Disney's abuses? These stories are told through detailed interviews and narrative-style writing that makes the tales engaging reads. It is in the best tradition of muckraking journalism.
Understand one thing: I like Disney World. I've been there many times. It's a fun place. I like Disney movies. I generally root for the Mouse. But I also despise abuses by large corporations. Disney is guilty of more than its share, and "Married To The Mouse" is the best account I've read of how and why that happened.Married to the Mouse: Walt Disney World and Orlando Overview

The Unofficial Guide: The Color Companion to Walt Disney World (Unofficial Guides) ReviewI'm going to be perfectly clear here: I love this guidebook. It's certainly informative and gives you a great overview of the Resort and the color photos are beautiful, humorous, and really add to the book. It's easy to read and provides the same quality of the regular Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, but without being 800 pages long. Most of all, I love the humor that you find in many of the sections. From the humorous captions to pictures, to the satirical take on the Fantasyland expansion, to the fake hotel listings (which, yes, I understand could be somewhat confusing for some, but personally I thought they were great), the humor gives the guide a satirical edge that doesn't overpower the content, but makes the guide enjoyable to read, not just to gather information from. It's satirical but not cynical, and informative but not dry.
However, it is not a fully comprehensive guidebook. It wasn't meant to be; it's a companion to the regular Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. I knew that when I bought the book (I already owned the regular Unofficial Guide), and I brought both Guides with me on my recent trip to Walt Disney World. While the Color Companion was great to carry around in the parks and use for reference, the regular Guide was often referred to throughout the trip. For example, when we wanted to book a behind-the-scenes tour, or when I wanted to know more about Downtown Disney shopping. The regular Guide is also much more detailed when it comes to planning factors before you leave (for instance, what kind of tickets to purchase). If you know going in that the Color Companion is going to be helpful and informative but not comprehensive, then I don't think you'll be disappointed. But if you're going to try and rely on just this book to plan your vacation, you're probably going to be disappointed. And yeah, it's true that you can skip buying this and just get the Unofficial Guide by itself and have all the information you'll need. You spend way too much time on various Disney sites and blogs and you've got a vast knowledge of all things WDW. Your friends think you're a little nuts, but not too nuts to solicit advice from regarding their upcoming trip. You know all the details, right? The Nautilus carved on Pooh's tree, Mr. Toad handing over the deed; that stuff is just the beginning. The same applies to the other parks as well. As you read you'll be making a mental note of hidden details to check out on your next visit.
