Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies ReviewI thought that Jason Surrell's book about the Haunted Mansion was great, and this book is just as wonderful. Read about the original idea proposed for the 'walk-thru' version of the Pirates of The Caribbean ride, go through each scene of the actual ride and find out the differences between the California, Florida, Japan and Paris rides. There are many photos and illustrations throughout the book (some of which I've never seen before). The book ends with a section on the movie and points out certain scenes taken from the ride. Overall, this book is worth every penny! I am looking forward to Jason Surrell's upcoming book on the Disney Mountains (Space, Thunder & Splash)Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies OverviewPirates of the Caribbean is one of the most popular and beloved attractions in Disney theme park history, and can be found in each Magic Kingdom Park around the globe. Disney: The Mouse Betrayed ReviewIt all boils down to the 'bottom line', doesn't it? For me, the underlying theme of this book was profits, profits, profits. Whatever it takes to increase profits, that's what Disney will do.
Walt Disney was a different kind of man than Michael Eisner. Walt wanted to create good, wholesome family entertainment - he knew if he did that, the money would come. Eisner, playing off Disney's well-earned reputation, used the profits from Disney classics and theme parks to bankroll projects that Walt would have been embarrassed to mention publicly.
There was a lot of anecdotal evidence in this book, and some reviewers claim that these two authors essentially had 'an axe to grind', or were pushing a conservative agenda. That thought occurred to me too, though I've discovered through other sources that Eisner and his people never really liked Walt Disney's "family values".
Disney is a business, and shareholders are entitled to a return on their money. Given the success of G-rated movies and wholesome family entertainment, the book makes you wonder why Disney would invest heavily in other forms that are certainly less profitable. But this book isn't trying to answer that question; it just sticks to providing insight into the new direction Disney is going, and the causes its management supports. Some of the 'behind the scenes' goings-on will surprise and shock you. The Mouse has its fingers in many pies, some quite unsavory. Ooops, careful, we must be 'tolerant'.

Pauline Frommer's Walt Disney World and Orlando (Pauline Frommer Guides) ReviewThis book really made my vacation at DisneyWorld. I'll admit I'm not a Disney 'fanatic'; I'd been once before and enjoyed it just fine, but hadn't thought about going back until this family reunion came up. I was put in charge of the DisneyWorld planning and bought several guidebooks -- this book was definitely the best.
It was clear that the author knew the parks inside and out, but he didn't seem to have 'drunk the Disney kool aid' if you know what I mean. For example, he pointed out rides that were disappointments and eating options that were overpriced, whereas the other guidebooks basically said it was all great, and gave you no caveats whatsoever.
I really appreciated the book's frankness and wonder if that's why it got those negative reviews from the folks who seem to go there over and over. Sometimes he was ironic about the parks too in a way that made me laugh out loud (never chuckled at a guidebook before).
I thought the book was very accurate. We ended up going the condo rental route thanks to this book (an option the other books barely mentioned but in this book there were a lot of details on it) and I have no doubt our group of 12 saved a good $2000 that way if not more.

Walt Disney World for Couples, 2002-2003: With or Without Kids ReviewThe Perlmutters have compiled an astonishing amount of useful information in this book - most of which is as applicable to families or single travellers as it is to couples. Lots of little, out-of-the-way sights are described, things you'd never otherwise know to look for. Inside the Mouse: Work and Play at Disney World, The Project on Disney ReviewThis book falls somewhere between David Koenig's "Mouse Tales" and Stephen Fjellman's "Vinyl Leaves". It leans a bit more toward the former and seems to have been intended as a critical assessment of Disney, Disney World, popular culture, consumerism and more. It is written in the form of a vacation memoir that tries to weave together the perspectives of academics, parents (some of the authors ARE parents who took their children to Disney World), photo essayists (there are 50 photographs in the book and a handful are noteworthy), Marxists, and feminists. Perhaps this breadth - or lack of focus - is one of the reasons the book failed to really engage me. There are some insights but I struggled to get at them since the writing was a bit verbose and the authors did not provide footnotes on several references. My overall impression of the book was that of a well-intentioned but poorly-written thesis. I did not come away with the impression that the authors disliked Disney or Disney World. As someone who has visited the parks, I can easily agree with some of the criticisms and frustrations noted in the text. Unfortunately for me, most of the messages that the authors where trying to convey to me got lost in the style. For academic insight, try Fjellman's book which, for all its deep thought and length, was actually much easier for me to follow. For an easier read about backstage goings-on at the mouse-house, try Koenig's book which I found most enjoyable and reasonably well-documented.Inside the Mouse: Work and Play at Disney World, The Project on Disney Overview

The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland 2007 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewWe were just at Disneyland two weekends ago (spring break for some folks), and spent two days (Fri & Sat) at Disneyland and one day (Sun)at Disney California, this book was FANTASTIC! I read this on our two-day drive down to Anaheim and mapped out our days using the plans available in the book and the program guide I got off Disney's website for the days we would be there... truly we hardly waited in line at all and rode everything we wanted to and saw TONS of shows. We also had so much "extra" time we were able to do some of our favorites (Soarin' and Star Tours for example) twice. We only opted to get FAST PASSES twice (the book explains it, thankfully)because we didn't really need to use them much as we were so easily getting on everything we wanted to go on. Best tip... Get to the park EARLY (hardly anyone did this, it is a crazy fact!) and follow one of the plans, really you don't need to be a drill sergeant about it or anything! We simply lead our family through the parks in the recommended order and had three extremely fun, stress free days! We spent far more time in line for food than for rides or shows. We also stayed across the street from Disneyland at one of the hotels listed in the book, which made it REALLY easy to leave and come back so I must also recommend spending the extra money if you can, it sure was nice for us(Our kids are 8 and 6, fyi.) This book made Disney fun for all of us and hardly ANY fighting or breakdowns, and our 8 yr old has autism... Birnbaum's Walt Disney World 2009 ReviewLooking for a guide to Walt Disney World? I think I can help. My family, along with two other families, recently spent a week at Disney, and we took five different travel books with us. We thought it would be fun to compare how useful the books were as we planned our trip and as we spent our days at the parks.
This review is the result of our efforts, with book rated from 1 star (awful) to 5 stars (great).
Before I start, you should know that our little reviewing group consisted of three couples, all in their early thirties. Between us we have three little girls, one little boy, a teenage girl, and a pair of grandparents that went along too.
We rated the books based on six criteria:
1. Helpfulness as a Trip Planner
Does the book offer tips on saving money or time? Does it help you get through the Orlando airport? Does it recommend hotels and restaurants to reserve and back up its reasons well? Does it have good advice about the Disney dining plan and which restaurants to eat at?
2. Helpfulness While at Disney World.
Is it worthwhile to take the guide with you? Does it help with last minute decisions? Is it fun to read as you wait for a restaurant table, or in a line for a ride or show?
3. Organization.
No matter how good a particular piece information is, if you can't find it, it doesn't do you any good. This is especially true in travel guides, when you often need a particular piece of information RIGHT NOW!
4. Current information.
Though all of these guides have "2009" in their title, are they really up-to-date? To find out, we picked out three things we know are new at Disney World for this year: The American Idol Experience show, the new promotion where guests get in free on their birthday, and the new room decor at the BoardWalk resort, where we stayed, and checked to see which books knew about them.
5. Addresses family needs
Since so many Disney World visitors are families, how does each book reflect that? Are there specific planning tips for families? Is there advice about which rides are too scary for little ones?
So, on to the reviews!
Birnbaum's Walt Disney World 2009 2 stars
Once published by travel guru Steve Birnbaum, today Birnbaum's Walt Disney World is an objective travel guide in name only. Now written and published by the Disney company, it offers nothing but cheers for everything Walt Disney World has to offer. Worse, a lazy attitude permeates everything, as if this is something Disney is forced to do but would really just forget about. As you would expect, there's precious little about saving money (except for a recommendation to "save" by buying the extra-cost Disney Disney Plan) and no quality ratings for attractions, restaurants or resorts beyond an occasional "Birnbaum's Best" logo. Chapter titles are confusing: restaurants are under "Good Meals Great Times;" water parks within "Everything Else in the World." The book was 1-for-3 on our accuracy test. It knew the American Idol show existed but had no information about it. Its room description for the Boardwalk Resort was two years out of date. It did not mention the birthday promotion. On the plus side, the book's relative few pages makes it the easiest of the Disney guides to scan through, and there are many illustrations of Mickey Mouse and other cartoon characters.
The Complete Walt Disney World 2009 5 stars
Outstanding organization and a wealth of color photos makes it easy to find particular information in The Complete Walt Disney World. Chapters are color coded, and subjects are grouped together well. For example, a Planning Your Trip chapter has a subsection on the Disney Dining Plan that clearly spells out the pluses and minuses of that add-on, and individual articles titled Saving Money (with 30 numbered tips), another called Saving Time. Restaurant reviews include good insight on character meals. Resort descriptions have more details than the other guides, though the authors provide little opinion beyond a star rating. Theme park information is superb. Attraction reviews, which can go on for multiple pages for major headliners like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, include "Fear Factors" as well as "Fun Finds," are practical for families and fun for Disney fans. There's a touring plan for each park that we found helpful. The Complete Guide was 3-for-3 in our accuracy test. The only downer: Except for hotel listings, the Complete Walt Disney World focuses exclusively on Walt Disney World. There's no mention of Universal Studios, Sea World, or even the Orlando airport.
Frommer's Walt Disney World and Orlando 2009 3 stars
Frommers is well written, well organized and in many ways thorough, but the author doesn't seem that familiar with Walt Disney World. The book has no tips on saving time or money, and its hotel and restaurant opinions aren't backed up with a lot of facts. Attraction descriptions are short paragraphs with no specifications and few tips. The book offers little take-along value, and hardly any specific information for families. Vague family information. There are no photos or illustrations. The book scored 0 for 3 on our accuracy test. It didn't know about the American Idol show, our new room decor, or Disney's birthday promotion.
Fodor's Walt Disney World 2009: plus Universal Orlando and SeaWorld 2 star
Like a weaker version of the Frommers guide, the Fodors one is less organized and offers even less planning advice. Its ride and show descriptions seem to be edited versions of those in the Unofficial Guide, which this company also publishes. Like Frommers, the book scored 0 for 3 on our accuracy test.
The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2009 4 stars
Is there an editor in the house? Packed with advice and information, the 848-page Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World is like your grandmother's attic: there's a lot of good stuff in there but so much junk to shift through! Actually it depends on the subject. If you have hours to dig through it, this massive tome can be a great planning tool. Page after page is devoted to subjects such as saving time or saving money. Incredibly detailed resort information includes which rooms, by number, offer the best views. Attraction summaries have details such as ratings by age group, but the authors comments are often so cynical they have value only if you find them funny. The Unofficial Guide scored 2 out of 3 on our accuracy test. It didn't know about Disney's birthday promotion. The book includes various Touring Plans, which offer step-by-step guidance for a day, or two, at each of the theme parks. These looked useful, but our group had too many individual interests to follow them. In short, this is a good book for those who aren't really fans of the Disney company, but want to take months to plan out a visit to its mecca.
So that's it! We determined that the Unofficial Guide and the Complete Guide are the best two books out there. As for which is the best for you, I think if you like Disney (or want a book that includes photography) you will like the Complete Guide best, but if you are headed there reluctantly (like, say, only to keep your kids happy), or also want information about SeaWorld or Universal, you will find the Unofficial Guide more to your liking. Frommer's Walt Disney World & Orlando 2008 (Frommer's Complete) ReviewThis book is what it states: an excellent tool for learning about any of the new or newly rehabbed rides and shows at Disney world and several other Orlando area parks. It's as up to date as the books press time would allow and the maps of the parks are decent if not totally encompassing. This is not the book to get if your debating on where to stay on the Disney property as the hotel descriptions are extremely brief. You're likely better off cruising the web with as many informative web sites as fellow Disney fanatics have created out there.
My biggest complaint with the book is that this author doesn't actually seem to like Disney World. From the tone of her writing maybe she just OD'd on too much Disney, stood in one too many lines, heard one too many crying children in her quest for Disney detail-whatever. Why We Love Disney ReviewDISCLAIMER
It seems like reviews that are not 100% favorable - subject the reviewer to loads of criticism from die-hard Disney fans. The premise seems to be that anything having to do with Disney is GREAT, and any criticism is evil. However, for a review to be meaningful; I believe that the reviewer should try to tell the listening audience how a specific book (or product) affected them, so that people considering the purchase of the product can evaluate the review (with a grain of salt) and apply what they learn towards their decision to buy it or not.
With that out of the way... here is my review, based solely on my personal opinion. Take it or leave it.

The writer is a great researcher, and has organized facts about Disney in a very academic way. I personally would have been much more interested in this book if... 1) it wasn't just another conglomeration of 'known' Disney history, 2) the writer had injected some additional effort to captivate her readers with her storytelling charm, 3) put a price on the book that was more in line with others on that same subject.
Because she is working in the educational field, this book seemed to favor more of a text book presentation, and I suspect that she followed a mind set that "Text Books" are expensive, and because she is in the educational field... her book should be expensive too.
And probably the most important point that I can make about this book is that her title... "Why We Love Disney: The Power of the Disney Brand"... although unique in its approach (and the reason why I purchased the book in the first place) was never really explored, answered or evaluated to any degree that would warrant that title. That part of the writer's marketing approach Really bothered me, especially seeing as this book came with such a high cost. It just didn't deliver as her title promised.
If any NEW Disney fans want to gain knowledge of Disney... there is a plethora of books that do it with greater "entertainment value" in mind, and a whole lot cheaper... Bob Thomas, Jim Krokis have really great books out, to name a few - and titles like "The Animated Man", and one of my favorites... "Disney Wars" which unmasks the Disney Corporation in great 'inside' detail.
If I was a new person to the 'concept' of Disney, and wanted to know how they created the most recent version of the theme park industry... And I was willing to sit in a classroom to gain this knowledge... then this book would be where I'd start. But, and I may be wrong here... this business is supposed to be fun and entertaining, and unfortunately this book (although well researched) does not follow an entertainment approach.
My hat is off to the writer for research and development!
However, I found this book to be more of a culmination of 'old' Disney history that was more inexpensively obtained elsewhere. And my advice to her and all future writers is... when you come up with a 'great and unique title' like her's... make sure that there is adequate information that support such a title, in order to educate your audience about... Fun with the Family Southern California, 8th: Hundreds of Ideas for Day Trips with the Kids (Fun with the Family Series) ReviewI ordered this book along with Susan Peterson's "Fun and educational places to go with kids and adults in Southern California," hoping to find good family expeditions. Sad to say, "Fun with the Family" suffers terribly from the comparison. It's not that it's bad, it's just that its a very generic, lightweight guidebook that mostly covers places I already knew about. It would be fine for a family who is visiting and wants the highlights of where to go with kids, but I'm looking for interesting weekend expeditions that aren't theme parks or museums. PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2009: The Unique Travel Guide, Planner, Organizer, Journal, and Keepsake ReviewI bought this as one of three books to prepare for our Disney trip. I love all things Disney so it was fun to read a travel guide written by a Disney fanatic. Here are the highlights of this guide:
The MAPS: these are the best WDW maps that I have come across for planning your schedule! They are detailed but not convoluted, and seem to be much more drawn to scale than Disney's own maps that you can order customized from the website.
The REVIEWS: she includes reviews of every eatery and attraction including a rating from herself, her husband, and her readers. She also includes comments from her teenager, tween, and toddler about some attractions!
The PICTURES: unlike other travel guides, she includes candid photos of the snapshot variety (from her own trips and probably from readers) and the pics are in full color. The pics really give you a more personal feel than the typical travel guide glossy photos or no photos (as in one of my guidebooks).
The DETAILS: she really seems to leave no stone unturned, like which specific rooms in each resort have the best views!
While I enjoyed all three of my Disney travel guides, this is my favorite. If you can only buy one, THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT!!!PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2009: The Unique Travel Guide, Planner, Organizer, Journal, and Keepsake OverviewThe size and scope of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is enough to make the most seasoned traveler shiver. Every map, photo, chart, illustration, and worksheet is in full color, with additional use of color to highlight important points, such as items that are new or have changed since the publication of the previous edition.

Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World For Grown-Ups (Unofficial Guides) ReviewThis compact format of the "Unofficial Guide" is handy to carry compared to its larger counterpart "Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2000; Bob Sehlinger" but the information is basically the same. Tips to help with the Kids for are cut, as are some of the more lengthy reviews of hotels/attractions/restaurants.
This book aims and hits the mark with helpful hints for the Grown-up (are we ever grown-up?) visitor. However, to keep the book more compact there is a great deal of rich material left out that is useful for the first time visitor. The information is provided in a well-organized format that most will find useful. Common questions are answered, and the book provides resource lists, Web sites, and e-mail addresses.
Timesavers are included regarding attractions that are more along the adult taste, but who is to say that the author knows everyone's taste. One of the "Don't Bother" items for the Magic Kingdom is Mickey's ToonTown. For the more whimsical adult this can be a fun place and a hot spot to meet characters unclose and personal. After all what would a trip to WDW be without that old standard photo of you and "the Mouse" himself.
Where this book shines is pointing you towards the more "adult" attractions and events. With so much to do and experience at WDW a good guide is extremely helpful.
Using the planning tips in this and other guides hundreds of dollars can be saved. The How to Cut Costs section offers many ways to save money both in the planning stages as well as during the visit. While money may be no object to some, most people would rather with a little knowledge save some cash to happily spend it on all the souvenirs we must bring back to those not heading for the "World".
Overall as a handy guide easy to carry I would recommend this book for the "adult" traveler. Another handy to carry guide is "PassPorter Walt Disney World: The unique travel guide, planner, organizer, journal, and keepsake!" For serious planning a meatier guidebook is needed. I have found that the "Unofficial" guides offer the off the cuff, straight shooting opinions and have relied on them for years.
If this is your first trip to WDW then buy the more comprehensive guide and if you want a handy to carry reference then The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World for Grown-Ups is a great choice. If you are a repeat visitor you should be able to skip the larger version and go straight for the Grown-Ups guide. As WDW evolves so do the attractions but the goal is the same, HAVE FUN!Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World For Grown-Ups (Unofficial Guides) Overview

I thought the difficult economic issues were avoided as well as the analogy of the corporation to a Roman General and his army. Part Three was the best on Class and Heirarchies with all three authors contributing works in the section providing a superb and vitally important introduction to cultural theory and cultural programming.
With Tony Blair ever-whispering into Bush's ear, the British empire now American-powered, and Disney too a victim of Anglophilia, it is difficult to believe that American Yankees ever fought a war against the British, let alone two wars!

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2007 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewMy family and I just returned from our first trip to Disney World. (It was as blast!) Because it was our first time and we were essentially clueless to the Disney experience, we bought several guides.
The Unofficial Guide by Bob Sehlinger is the one book that I kept returning to over and over again. It's full of such detailed information that even the clueless will be prepared to visit Disney World. However, *because* this book provides an incredible amount of information (such as how to increase your chances for getting into the Hot Seat for MGM's Millionaire game), it could be almost overwhelming for first time visitors to Disney World. (I often got headaches trying to absorb everything!)
In this book, you'll find a Crowd-Level Calendar, Park Traffic Patterns, Clip-Out Touring Plans, and much, much more. This book is updated yearly, so the 2006 version had information on Mickey's PhilharMagic, Expedition Everest, Lights, Motors, Action! Stunt Show, and so on.
Reader feedback is peppered throughout the book, as is the critical and often snarky comments by the author. He provides fascinating "behind the scenes" facts, too. For example, the Imagineers of Mickey's PhilharMagic thought they were being clever when they released Jasmine's deodorant scent when she flies by on the carpet. However, many people were allergic to the scent (the show was often disrupted by sneezing!) so they pulled it from the show. Another amusing behind the scenes: Disney cast members sometimes mess with the Hall of Presidents to reflect current events (e.g., during the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, the Prez had a condom sticking out of his jacket pocket.)
As you can see, the author can be irreverent.
Each attraction gets a thorough overview, as do the restaurants and hotels. For example, a phone number to each restaurant is provided, as is an evaluation of friendliness, service, wine slection, description of setting and atmosphere, menu samples/house specialities, hours of operation, and more. Although a few of the evaluations didn't jive with my experience (for example, the author raves about the Muppet 3D pre-show and movie whereas I thought it was suprisingly boring), there's enough information provided to at least get an idea if a restaurant or attraction would likely appeal. In fact, their star-system rating according to age (grade school vs. young adults vs. those over 30 etc.) is invaluable--and mostly correlated with my experience with the attractions.
I found myself returing to the Unofficial Guide over and over again. In fact, it's the only guide I took WITH me to Disney World! Although I sometimes felt overwhelmed at all the information (it's hard for a newbie to take in all that Disney World offers, especially sight-unseen), I felt PREPARED due in large part to this book.
The author is THOROUGH on his updates--including which attractions have been discontinued and the new ones to be introduced--so I know that the 2007 guide will be just as awesome as the 2006 version! (By the way, that's a picture of Expedition Everest on the 2007 cover--the new rollercoaster in Animal Kingdom that debuted in April of 2006. Here's a tip for ya: it's not HALF as scary--or fun--as people have said. I enjoyed Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom much more! Inside the Dream ReviewWalt Disney is well on his way to becoming the most written about creative talent in American film.
This is the 100th anniversary of his birth and thankfully any examination of his life can still include careful interviews with people who knew him and worked with him. The book is less an in-depth biography and more like spending a long afternoon hearing how it was from those who knew him best and who can praise him at the same time they acknowledge his frailties. It's an earnest and heartfelt look at the heart and soul of the man, and the authors do their level best to take a frank and thoughtful approach while still being entertaining. Like everything else Disney, it's best to give in to the fact that you're about to be put under a spell. The sooner you give in, the more fun you'll have.
Though some may find it less satisfying than a more critical analysis, this reader is tired of deconstructing American icons and welcomes this lovely look at a historical figure whose impact went well beyond his filmmaking. Disney is arguably the greatest influence on American popular culture and family entertainment in the past 100 years. Most admirable is the way the authors address some of the detractors who've criticized Walt Disney over the years for such things as anti-Semitism or racism. Albeit sentimental, the authors maintain fairly good objectivity. Walt Disney remains enigmatic even to those closest to him. Thankfully, the recollections by family and friends are edited into the layout without making the entire book seem like a posthumous testimonial dinner.
Granted this Disney Editions publication doesn't come without its ulterior motives. With the kind of control Disney has always had over any thing profiling the company one doubts that a harsh light will ever shine on their founder in one of their own pubications. But dreams and dreamers always look better in a soft light, and who but a bitter DreamWorker would ever want to bother trying to detract from such happy success? (And if ever proof was needed that certain ex-studio head turned competitor NEVER was and NEVER WILL be the next Walt Disney, this delivers it!) Though you wish the current Disney brass would pay more attention to the underlying principals of what makes Disney 'Disney' that are spelled out in this book. Hey, we can dream, too, can't we?
Still, this deliciously illustrated oversized scrapbook-styled remembrance of Walt more than makes up for its obvious propaganda focused origins. Imagine(eer) that!
Even though the book serves primarily as a companion to the documentary film of the same title, it's a wonderful read. A gentle reflection with rich illustrations -- some seldom and never before seen photographs -- and a rich and handsome design. Endlessly entertaining. A lovely tribute worth adding to your library.Inside the Dream OverviewA stunning, elaborately illustrated biography of the man who had an immeasurable impact upon American culture. This timely biography, told through the captivating and vivid words of those who knew, and studied Walt Disney, provides the most revelatory protrait to date of the man who has become an icon of American culture.
