Cosmic Conspiracy: Psychic to the Rich & Famous ReviewThe life of a psychic is one with a drive to try to bring what joy you can. "Cosmic Conspiracy: Psychic to the Rich and Famous" is a memoir from Patricia McLaine as she recounts her own journey through life and how she gained famous clients and helped shape their careers for the better. Thoughtful and intriguing on the insight on the many types of life, "Cosmic Conspiracy" is a metaphysical memoir that will intrigue those who wish to know the life and ways of the psychic.Cosmic Conspiracy: Psychic to the Rich & Famous OverviewPattie McLaine never planned to be a professional psychic consultant. She had started writing at an early age and that was what she thought she really wanted to do with her life. Early on, she had no real clue about what Destiny had in store for her-no clear remembrance of a promise made to the Universe long before she was even born-a promise to perhaps try to help people again and shed some Light-as she had during many other lifetimes throughout the centuries. A series of strange and wonderful events took place, which had actually occurred in many different guises from the day that she was born. When Pattie was three months old, her mother took her into a church, knelt before the altar, and dedicated her daughter's life to God-without asking for Pattie's permission, of course. There were many other strange and incredible events that happened all along the way that are revealed within the pages of this book-which altogether amounted to what Pattie decided had to be a clever, capricious and cunning scheme-if not an Absolute Cosmic Conspiracy!

Hunting with Barracudas: My Life in Hollywood with the Legendary Iris Burton ReviewLike many gay boys who grew up in a small town, Chris Snyder dreamed of being part of the excitement, glitz and fame of Hollywood. As he went through school, he came to the realization that his ideal role would likely be behind the scenes, as an agent, helping to find talent and guide them to their success. After an internship at Warner Brothers, he accepted a job as the assistant to the legendary independent agent, Iris Burton, a Hollywood icon who had guided the career of countless child stars for decades.
Iris warned Chris that she was not easy to work for, an understatement that he would often live to regret for the next thirteen years in the 24/7 personal servitude-like employ of that sarcastic, self-possessed but often brilliant star maker. Chris did get a chance to see Hollywood from a vantage point that nobody else could offer, and to work with up and coming stars such as Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Harnett, Kirsten Dunst, the Olsen twins, and many others, and dealt with a myriad of Hollywood studios, publicists, managers and competing agents. The highlight of his career, and a primary focus of the book, was being witness to one major star's self-destruction: the gradual downfall and drug-related death of River Phoenix, a major event for both Iris and Chris, which signaled a definite shift in the operation of her agency. By this time, Iris was an industry fossil while most agents were half her age, and large, aggressive agencies had already eaten up or destroyed independent agencies like hers. They lost clients, Iris became more and more difficult to work for, and Chris - who had already resigned several times but had been lured back by the needy and persuasive Iris - knew he had to get out of there, for no other reason than what the stress was doing to his health. Chris had no life outside of the agency, other than occasional one-nighters with selfish guys he met at a bar or a bathhouse. Working with Iris had also let him see how the larger agencies worked, stealing clients from each other, making it clear to him that he needed to make some changes in his choice of career.
If you enjoy HBO's "Entourage," you'll absolutely love seeing this look at stars relationships with Hollywood agents, currently and in the not so distant past. This memoir is well written, with genuine heart and soul evident in every detail about his love/hate relationship with Iris, and how it forced him to reassess what he wanted in his own life. I give it four dressing-room-door stars out of five.

Dean and Me: (A Love Story) ReviewGrowing up working for an executive at NBC, I was lucky to have known Dean Martin myself. Now, years later, as founder of the "Dean Martin Fan Center", I have met and heard from so many people who were close enough to know both Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis when they were a comedy/musical team who took the world by storm.
After entertaining the world for ten years through stage, radio, films, television and recordings, the public grew to love the team. Then, after a decade of burning up everything they touched, the duo became burned out themselves. Having to please the studio executives who wanted to keep the cash cow producing, their material became recycled. Martin and Lewis as individuals grew and saw beyond what they were doing. Those pressures and confining elements only led to animosity between each other, and finally wound up in divorce. As in any parting, not only did it hurt the two involved, but also their family and friends. The public was their 'extended' family-- and now each fan had to choose between taking Dean's side or Jerry's side, usually putting blame on the other partner for the breakup. The media took huge advantage of this.
When I first heard that Jerry was a writing his memoirs of those partnership years, I was more than a bit apprehensive. After all, Dean has already left this world and what would Jerry say about him? Would Jerry take credit for everything? Would Jerry somehow put blame for their breakup on his partner somehow? I finally got my advance copy sent overnight from the publisher. Amazingly, it wasn't the size of the Gutenberg Bible that I expected. I finished it in one sitting, actually waiting for something I didn't like or would find inacurate to blast on about. Guess what? I WAS SHOCKED -- Shocked to find that this book is honest, sincere, unbiased and does not put either Dean or Jerry into the spotlight -- rather it lights up the stage. It is a well written, well balanced, easy to read history, focusing on the duo as a "team". Their excitement... their worries... their amazement... their ups and their downs... their freedoms and their obstacles. Jerry ties together anecdotes and facts many of us heard before, with more focus and information, to have it all finally make sense. I don't impress easily when it comes to stories told (no matter who writes them), but as for "Dean and Me : A Love Story," this is the real deal. Finally -- an honest inside look at the exhilaration and ever mounting pressures Martin & Lewis experienced, always having to please everyone around them, except themselves.
James Kaplan, Jerry's co-writer, is absolutely marvelous in helping Lewis, not only get his message across, but making the reader feel the emotions inside along the way. He paints a picture with words. I would advise anyone wanting a first-hand look at Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, that this is the book to read.

Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana ReviewI read this book, Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, awhile ago, and reread it again because of my enjoyment of it the first time, and it didn't let me down the second time around. The book kept my interest and gave me a new perspective on a few parts of Nirvana and Kurt. I have read other books, such as "Who Killed Kurt Cobain?" and "Kurt Cobain" and a few other shorter biographies and compiled books. I know a great amount about our legeng, Kurt Donald Cobain, and yet I still love reading his biographies over and over, especially Come As You Are. CAYA takes you through Kurt's life, starting with Day 1. It leads you right through about 1993, very early 1994, and the new editions have an after-chapter about his death, although not nearly as much about the ending as we would have liked. A good thing about the book is the quotes. The biographer wrote the book based on a series of many interviews with Kurt, so Kurt says a lot. A possibilty of biasism is because of one theory. A bad review was written about Kurt and Courtney in Vanity Fair magazine, leading to trials about custody and having their new baby, Frances Bean, taken temporarily away from them, and making them turn in weekly urine tests. Kurt wanted to quickly create a "good, nice" buzz about him so the aftermath of the article would vanish. They wanted to protect Courtney's name, so they hired a biographer. The book may try to make Courtney seem better than she is. Read "Who Killed Kurt Cobain?" afterwards and compare the Courtney in each book. For new Kurt fans, or un-Kurt-ly-educated fans, I would suggest this book, it is simple to read and extremely captivating.Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana Overview

The Boy Who Loved Batman: A Memoir ReviewNot too long ago, the idea of a Batman film franchise revolving around a serious, dark Batman was considered laughable by practically everyone in Hollywood. One individual had the vision and prescience since childhood to see otherwise. Michael Uslan's memoir tells the tale of how a kid with a dream can one day make it a reality - even as the weight of Gotham City is bearing down on you. Born into a middle class family in New Jersey, Uslan's look back through the years wonderfully meshes humor with nostalgia making for a wonderful read, taking the reader on an emotional journey through life's ups and downs, thereby making this book a must read for anyone, comic book fan or not. (It must be noted, however, that if you are a comic book fan, this read is absolutely essential - Uslan's inside account of the industry provides a rare and unique look into its pioneers and evolution). Uslan has fought vigorously for comics to be taken as a serious American art form, capable of masterful storytelling, and even serving as an educational medium. After reading this book, I don't know how it is possible for anyone to make a legitimate argument against such a stance. However, what makes this visually stunning memoir such a stand out is just how much the reader takes away from the book after reading it. Uslan's narrative is a refreshing glimpse into the life of the man who forever changed the world of entertainment, but does not revolve around fame, gossip, and money in Hollywood - that is completely counter to what the author is about. Uslan's story is about passion, hard work, sacrifice, and focusing on what matters in life - namely family and friends. Far from being handed everything on a silver platter, Uslan encourages us all to go against the grain and think creatively, providing us with the life lessons needed to know how to get through times of struggle and rejection to achieve the highest of goals. It seems to live life any other way would be akin to a life spent stuck in Arkham Asylum. The Boy Who Loved Batman: A Memoir OverviewIs any superhero cooler than Batman? He's a crime-fighting vigilante with a tragic past, a lawless attitude, and a seemingly endless supply of high-tech gadgetry. In this fully illustrated memoir, author Michael Uslan recalls his journey from early childhood fandom through to the decades he spent on a caped crusade of his own: to bring Batman to the silver screen as the dark, serious character he was at heart. Uslan's story traces his path from the wilds of New Jersey to the limelight of Hollywood, following his work as Executive Producer on every Batman film from Tim Burton's 1989 re-envisioning to 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. Through it all, he helped to create one of the most successful pop culture franchises of all time.

Jeannie Out of the Bottle ReviewWho doesn't love Barbara Eden? She's one of the classiest stars in show business and her biography is a breezy, fun read. There's no nastiness here, but Barbara still includes lots of stories from "I Dream of Jeannie" and beyond. Barbara has been inspirational in many ways; her dignity in personal tragedy, her loyalty to her "Jeannie" fans, and her willingness to embrace her pop-icon image. She also shares some candid and deep feelings here and it's all very touching. Her autobiography is sweet and to the point. I couldn't put the book down. We all dreamed of Jeannie, but you'll love Barbara.Jeannie Out of the Bottle OverviewA magical, heartwarming memoir from one of Hollywood's most beloved icons Over the past four decades, the landmark NBC hit television series I Dream of Jeannie has delighted generations of audiences and inspired untold numbers of teenage crushes on its beautiful blond star, Barbara Eden. Part pristine Hollywood princess and part classic bombshell, with innocence, strength, and comedic talent to spare, Barbara finally lets Jeannie out of her bottle to tell her whole story. Jeannie Out of the Bottle takes us behind the scenes of I Dream of Jeannie as well as Barbara's dozens of other stage, movie, television, and live concert performances. We follow her from the hungry years when she was a struggling studio contract player at 20th Century Fox through difficult weeks trying to survive as a chorus girl at Ciro's Sunset Strip supper club, from a stint as Johnny Carson's sidekick on live TV to tangling on-screen and off with some of Hollywood's most desirable leading men, including Elvis Presley, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, and Warren Beatty. From the ups and downs of her relationship with her Jeannie co-star Larry Hagman to a touching meeting with an exquisite and vulnerable Marilyn Monroe at the twilight of her career, readers join Barbara on a thrilling journey through her five decades in Hollywood. But Barbara's story is also an intimate and honest memoir of personal tragedy: a stillborn child with her first husband, Michael Ansara; a verbally abusive, drug-addicted second husband; the loss of her beloved mother; and the accidental heroin-induced death of her adult son, just months before his wedding. With candor and poignancy, Barbara reflects on the challenges she has faced, as well as the joys she has experienced and how she has maintained her humor, optimism, and inimitable Jeannie magic throughout the roller-coaster ride of a truly memorable life. Illustrated with sixteen pages of photographs, including candid family pictures and rare publicity stills, Jeannie Out of the Bottle is a must-have for every fan, old and new.
