Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door ReviewHugh Martin's THE BOY NEXT DOOR is an instant classic among musical theater autobiographies, a fascinating tale of an Alabama boy who becomes one of the great songwriters of the century. This brillant yet down-to-earth composer knew and worked with nearly all of the greats of his era and his book is loaded with stories and memories of virtually all of them: Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Noel Coward, Kay Thompson, Beatrice Lillie, Mae West, Lucille Ball, Vincente Minnelli, Tony Bennett, Irving Berlin, June Allyson, Frank Sinatra, Ethel Waters, Liza Minnelli, Gene Kelly, Joshua Logan, Carmen Miranda, Lena Horne, Jeanette MacDonald, the list is endless and includes his admirers Stephen Sondheim and Michael Feinstein (who writes the foreward to this book). And of course, the star most associated with Martin, Judy Garland, whom he wrote "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Trolley Song" for and later accompanied her in her legendary 1951 stint at the Palace Theater. There's also much about his famed collaboration with Ralph Blane which apparently was more in-name than in-action. This man knew everyone - from Grandma Moses to Gore Vidal to gospel singer Del Delker, whom he accompanied on religious revival tours when he was quite on in years.
Martin is 96 now and amazingly, wrote the book without a ghost writer. The text beautifully captures this man's gentle, friendly, and loving spirit as noted in the foreward by Feinstein. Gracious and lavish with his praise, no one really gets raked over the coals here, not even "friend" Blane who Martin discovered fairly recently went around claiming to be the author of several Martin songs, although Martin is obviously, to quote Lady Catherine de Bourgh, "seriously displeased". A more complicated issue was his regretted break with Garland during her troubled A STAR IS BORN production in which he begged her not to "belt" her performance of "The Man Who Got Away" but sing it with restrained feeling which resulted in Garland cursing and ridiculing him before the people on the set, causing him to walk off the production. He is harder on himself in restropect than with Judy, not seeing her inner turmoil at the time and now realizing how badly she needed a supportive friend despite her belligerence. (A funnier but similar battle emerged two decades later when Martin was hired to be vocal arranger for the Broadway production of SUGAR BABIES and found Ann Miller equally willful when it came to advice on how to best deliver a song.) Martin sent Garland a note years later who responded with a loving telegram as tall as Garland herself which he had framed.
There's not that much about Martin's personal life but then many a serious musician puts their music above all else and this is undoubtably how he lived during the peak years of his career. Martin is quite frank though about his years battling "speed" which left him an emotional and physical mess even many years after he conquered the vice. Most important to his full recovery was becoming "born again" Christian in the 1970's and although he writes of his joy in embracing religion he is not an confrontational Bible thumper. Feinstein writes in the foreward that Martin's "unwavering faith and appreciation for life...gives others a sense of security and comfort"; Tony Bennett on the back jacket states Martin is "the single most talented and finest human being I know."
One big surprise is how unhappy Martin was during his contract with MGM; producer Arthur Freed apparently was quite a terror not only to Martin but to such stars as Lucille Ball, whom Martin writes that Freed wounded so badly with his tongue that Lucy was unable to return to the studio for days.
One of the lovely things about the book is how Martin repeatedly goes out of his way to praise many of his contemporaries, friends, and associates. He is an eloquent defender of Mickey Rooney against his reputation of being tempermental and his analysis of his songwriting peers (always positive) is as superb as a music critic. There's also lots of good humor too as when Martin recalls Jerome Kern's comments to him and Blane: "I think that was disgracefully unpatriotic of you to write 'Buckle Down Winsocki' when we're at war with Japan" even occasional black humor as Gore Vidal tells him as they watch Princess Diana's funeral, "Do we really want Elton John to sing at our funerals?"
This beautifully produced book (loaded with many rare photos) is sure to be treasured by lovers of musicals be they Broadway or movie, or fans of just good music. Hugh Martin is a true hero; a brillant talent and a truly good man. Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Mr. Martin and thank you for the music of our lives!
Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door OverviewHugh Martin: The Boy Next Door is an enchanting jaunt through the Golden Era of Broadway and the MGM musicals. This firsthand account captures the energy and excitement of those special times, with eyewitness tales of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and dozens more. Hugh recounts the origins of some of America's most beloved songs, including the perennial favorite, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Martin also reveals some secrets that only he could know: the truth about his composition partner Ralph Blane, his addiction to the infamous Dr. Feelgood, Max Jacobson; how he was instrumental in turning Gene Kelly from a performer to a choreographer during the staging of Best Foot Forward; and what it was really like to be part of the MGM musical production machine. As Hugh enters his 96th year, this could be America's last chance to hear these stories from a living source. They are full of his signature charm, grace, musicality, and poeticism.

Killer Instinct ReviewI give 'Killer Instinct' this much: it was a quick and entertaining read -- a fun ride. The type of book you tear right through in a night. However, I find it difficult to take seriously Jane Hamsher's account of events. I find it curious that every single woman in this book is portrayed as a sweet, strong-willed, honest-to-goodness saint, worthy of enormous sympathy -- (not least of all, Jane Hamsher herself!) -- while almost every single man (save for one writer friend of hers) is portrayed as, more or less, an utter demon (at times, almost literally.)* Even her "partner in crime," Don Murphy is shown, at times, in a critical light -- but never Iron-Willed Jane. She is the very picture of patience and professionalism, often beset upon, but rarely (if ever) in error. It's interesting that at several points, particularly on the production of NBK, it is implied that a lot of people on the set are losing patience with her and are irritated by her presence -- but unfortunately, we don't have their side of the story, and as far as Jane is concerned, it is (always!) all miraculously due to their inability to handle the fact that she's a woman. (!!!) Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt there's plenty of sexism in Hollywood, but Hamsher's account, with its suspiciously unfailing tendency to portray every single woman as a flawless, tough-hearted angel, leads me to believe that this is not just a one-sided account, but quite possibly entirely out-of-whack, the rays of truth refracted wildly through Hamsher's "feminist fairytale" vision of her own experiences.
Additionally, I find it interesting that while initially very smitten with Tarantino's ideas and scripts, that as their professional ties go south, he magically turns into a thoroughly talentless hack, milking stolen ideas for all they're worth. But then she remembers that NBK is her dream project, and it was, of course, scripted by him -- drats! Thinking fast, she asserts that by far the best part of the script -- the TV sitcom parody -- was the work of her writer friend, not Tarantino. Well, uh ... OK.
Particularly priceless, though, is her initial (and I think only) direct encounter with Lawrence Bender, Tarantino's producer. They meet at a party, he says hello and is perfectly friendly and polite to her, and that's pretty much the extent of her experiences with him. Given that, it's pretty amazing (and terribly questionable) exactly how much hostility she has towards him and how much dirt she shovels in his direction throughout the rest of the book. Upon meeting him, she feels "queasy," shakes, and has to immediately leave the room for some air when they part! Why? Because she feels intuitively that she has just been in the presence of -- I believe she uses the term "jackal" -- but given the incredibly over-the-top way she describes it, the impression is more that of a "demon."* And why does she feel that way? Well, it's not one of those things you can explain, see, but essentially, it seems to mainly have to do with the fact that his eyes have a distant look to them. (They "recede into an emotional abyss when he speaks" according to Hamsher.)
I've never met Lawrence Bender, and I have no trouble believing that Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone and the host of other male Hollywood stars and hopefuls that appear in Hamsher's tale have their fair share of shortcomings and ballooned egos. Maybe a few of them really are even bad, dishonest people, through and though. Maybe. What I find more difficult to believe is that Hamsher and her coterie of oppressed agents and starlets and mother-figures are half as immaculate as they seem in the version of events she gives us here.
I also question the motivation for writing this book. A fun ride through the Hollywood system, or just an excuse to trash-talk people who've gone on to have more successful careers than she? Looking through Hamsher's filmography, I notice her unfailing tendency to grab interesting projects and turn them into mediocre films with mediocre earnings. It seems unlikely that Hamsher would ever deign to admit to an emotion as base as jealousy, but one wonders all the same.Killer Instinct Overview

The Oxford Companion to the American Musical: Theatre, Film, and Television (Oxford Companions) ReviewThe Oxford Companion to the American Musical is a surprisingly detailed overview of the the American musicals of Broadway, film and television as witnessed/researched through author Thomas Hischak. The most exciting part of this book is its careful research of the television musical, until now all but glossed over in books on the subject of musical theatre. There was a point in time where television churned out musicals and it is nice to see them get their due. Holiday Specials by Rankin and Bass added much to our song lexicon and it is nice to see them so well represented.
Obviously, the book has its omissions, something that is inevitable when a book has this size and scope. But entries are lovingly chosen and carefully researched and those that are left out are judiciously put aside, or accounted for under other entries. For example: I am a big fan of the musical flop Nick and Nora. N&N does not have it's own entry, but it is mentioned in several other places such us under Joanna Gleason's entry. It is amazing, through cross referencing, just how much author Hischak has accounted for.
One special note: an earlier reviewer of this book makes mention of the musical Destry Rides Again as being named merely "Destry." This is false, as any student of Stanley Greene's Broadway Musicals: Show By Show will tell you. The musical was indeed called Destry Rides Again.
Any true fan of musical theatre will find minor quibbles with any book that may leave out the particular pieces of minutia that fascinate them. However, this book is one of the best of its kind and it is cram packed FULL of wonderful details and oft cast aside information. A must read. The Oxford Companion to the American Musical: Theatre, Film, and Television (Oxford Companions) Overview

Warren William: Magnificent Scoundrel of Pre-Code Hollywood ReviewThis is an actor I've done quite a bit of research about myself--I've had to, I started a website in his honor in 2007. As I've said in my review of this title over there, Stangeland has taken a story that I'd figured out the outline for and he colored in that outline better than I believed ever possible. While he talks about all of the films to some degree this title is biography and through surviving nieces of the actor the author has discovered information about William's early days that I never thought would be found: his childhood in Minnesota, his days in New York at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, his World War I service, etc. William's stage career is covered as is, of course, his film career. Stangeland also arrives at the likely solution of why William left Warner Brothers and why his career didn't recover to pre-code heights once he did. I am certainly biased due to my appreciation of the subject material, but I read a lot of film biographies covering stars from this period and I haven't enjoyed one like this in awhile. As much as I might be easy to please on this subject I think I probably would also be one of the most difficult to please, but I absolutely loved this book!Warren William: Magnificent Scoundrel of Pre-Code Hollywood OverviewOn the motion picture screen, Hollywood star Warren William (1894-1948) was a magnificent rogue, often deliciously immoral and utterly callous, yet remarkably likable in his wickedness. Off-screen, the actor was as humble and retiring as his film characters were mean and heartless. This biography examines William's life and career in detail, from his rural Minnesota roots through his service in World War I, his Broadway stage success, and his meteoric rise and gradual fall from Hollywood fame in the 1930s and 1940s. Also analyzed are his film persona and the curious mechanisms by which our culture "selects" certain film personalities to remember and others to forget. Featured is a wealth of biographical material never before available, including rare candid photos of William's early years. Interviews with his surviving nieces provide intimate family details and personal remembrances.

Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz, from Godspell to Wicked ReviewFor decades, I have been fascinated by Broadway musicals and Broadway music, even though my occupation has nothing to do with the field of entertainment. However, it does deal with creativity. I think this is part of the reason I was drawn to the work of such composers and lyricists as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Lerner and Loewe, and Sondheim. I have read everything I could get my hands on about this individuals and others. What in their background led them to this occupation? What led them to become so successful?
Stephen Schwartz is a member of the current generation of Broadway composers and lyricists. Probably because there are so few opportunities for individuals with this talent and desire, each generation produces a very small number of successful composers and lyricists. In his case, Schwartz is both a composer and lyricist. Anyone with an interest in show music will have his or her favorite shows and favorite songs. Schwartz is the composer-lyricist of WICKED, my favorite of his shows and an amazing accomplishment. He wrote the lyrics to the songs from Disney's HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (and the German stage production of it) and to the song "If I Never You" from POCAHONTAS, also bordering on masterpieces in my opinion.
The author of this marvelous book is Carol de Giere. This book is not only extremely interesting to read, the author has capured the story of the steps along the path that led Schwartz from childhood to where he is today. This includes such great successes for someone so very young to great diappointments and how he handled them. We are left with an extraordinarily talented artist who received encouragement when he needed it and possessing an abundance of self-confidence.
There have been many movies in the past about composers (including Rodgers and Hart, Kern, Gershwin, and Porter). As I read this book, I thought: This book would make a good basis for a very interesting movie. For those individuals interested in Broadway, Broadway musicals and the people who create them (and creative people in general), I highly recommend this book and compliment the author.Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz, from Godspell to Wicked OverviewDefying Gravity takes readers into the creative world of Broadway and film composer Stephen Schwartz, from writing Godspell's score at age 23 through the making of the megahit Wicked. For this first authorized biography, de Giere draws from 80 hours of interviews with Schwartz and over 100 interviews with his colleagues, friends, and family. Her sympathetic yet frank narrative reveals never-before-told stories and explores both Schwartz's phenomenal hits and expensive flops. The book also includes a series of "Creativity Notes" with insights about artistic life, and more than 200 photographs and illustrations.

Wicked: The Grimmerie, a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Hit Broadway Musical ReviewFinally, after months of waiting (and a whole week early!). Wicked: The Grimmerie is here. Some may be wondering if they should buy this book, and I'm here to tell you.
The Good News: The cover and design of the book is amazing. The cover looks old and worn and is even padded. The intricate designs are textured and the book is nice and heavy and thick. The inside design is incredible. Each page (printed on very heavy paper) is made to look old, worn and stained and it's wonderful to look at. As for the actual contents... wow. The production photos are brilliantly printed and include photos from the following casts: Original Broadway Cast, 2nd Broadway Cast (Jennifer Laura Thompson and Joey McIntyre), Original Tour Cast (Stephanie J. Block and Kendra Kassebaum), and the 3rd Broadway Cast (Shoshana Bean and David Ayers). There are very few new photos but there are some. Most of them are from the tour cast (most of Kendra and some of Stephanie and one small one of Carole Kane). There are many interviews with every cast member and many from Gregory Maguire (writer of Wicked the novel) and Stephen Shwartz and Winnie Holtzman (writer of script). There is a step-by-step page of how Stephanie gets green before each show. They have a page dedicated to the dance Elphaba does in "Dancing Through Life" and they teach it to us step-by-step. They have many photos of props and sets and wigs, as well as original costume and set sketches. There is a handwritten page from the book and an early version of Defying Gravity. There is commentary on each song by Mr. Shwartz and this isn't even all of it. So much information to soak up!
The Wicked News: Unlike what some people are saying, the book DOES NOT INCLUDE THE FULL SCRIPT. There are bits of dialogue and a lot of it is summed up in a few sentences. (The Cornfield Scene is completely gone) They cut whole scenes (which is dumb, they are all spoiler free about it, even though they talk about the same parts in interviews). I was so hoping they would make a huge deal about the script and splash the libretto with tons of photos from each scene... It's very, very disappointing, yes. Very. But... ah, well. They also didn't include Elphaba's spells like they said they would. There is also a sad lack of production photos. There are so many wonderful photos and they don't use NEARLY as much as they should have... You should also know they don't include the 4th Broadway cast (Megan Hilty, Ben Vereen) or ANY of the Chicago cast (Ana Gastyer and Kate Reinders)... that really bites. The Chicago sit-down cast is only mentioned and that is a shame. If you are an Original Cast fan you may be slightly disappointed. Instead of using only the original cast photos (like the RENT "bible") they mix and match all the different casts. This would be fine except that if you are a big fan or the Chicago cast or the current Broadway cast (as of Fall 2005) you will be disappointed.
But over all, an AMAZING book. Buy it! It's a must for every Wicked fan. A MUST. This is also a wonderful gift.Wicked: The Grimmerie, a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Hit Broadway Musical OverviewWicked is not just a musical, it is a phenomenon. Every week 15,000 people pack New York+s Gershwin Theatre to see the show. The most successful musical on Broadway in 2004, Wicked is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire. It tells the story of Elphaba, the headstrong Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the good witch, growing up in the Land of Oz. The show has cast a spell on fans, many of whom return for second and third viewings. In 2005, the show begins an extensive tour across the United States and Canada, hitting major cities such as Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and many more. This beautifully packaged, whimsical keepsake is designed to resemble the Grimmerie, an ancient book of spells that Elphaba uses in the show. Wicked: The Grimmerie offers fans a behind-the-curtains peek at the musical, profiles of the cast and creative team, and inside stories, with full-color photographs throughout. Some of the irresistible special features include an -Ozian+ glossary, spells, an illustrated family tree, and a step-by-step look at how Elphaba gets green before each show-everything fans need to relive the Broadway experience day after day.
