Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door ReviewHugh Martin's THE BOY NEXT DOOR is an instant classic among musical theater autobiographies, a fascinating tale of an Alabama boy who becomes one of the great songwriters of the century. This brillant yet down-to-earth composer knew and worked with nearly all of the greats of his era and his book is loaded with stories and memories of virtually all of them: Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Noel Coward, Kay Thompson, Beatrice Lillie, Mae West, Lucille Ball, Vincente Minnelli, Tony Bennett, Irving Berlin, June Allyson, Frank Sinatra, Ethel Waters, Liza Minnelli, Gene Kelly, Joshua Logan, Carmen Miranda, Lena Horne, Jeanette MacDonald, the list is endless and includes his admirers Stephen Sondheim and Michael Feinstein (who writes the foreward to this book). And of course, the star most associated with Martin, Judy Garland, whom he wrote "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The Trolley Song" for and later accompanied her in her legendary 1951 stint at the Palace Theater. There's also much about his famed collaboration with Ralph Blane which apparently was more in-name than in-action. This man knew everyone - from Grandma Moses to Gore Vidal to gospel singer Del Delker, whom he accompanied on religious revival tours when he was quite on in years.
Martin is 96 now and amazingly, wrote the book without a ghost writer. The text beautifully captures this man's gentle, friendly, and loving spirit as noted in the foreward by Feinstein. Gracious and lavish with his praise, no one really gets raked over the coals here, not even "friend" Blane who Martin discovered fairly recently went around claiming to be the author of several Martin songs, although Martin is obviously, to quote Lady Catherine de Bourgh, "seriously displeased". A more complicated issue was his regretted break with Garland during her troubled A STAR IS BORN production in which he begged her not to "belt" her performance of "The Man Who Got Away" but sing it with restrained feeling which resulted in Garland cursing and ridiculing him before the people on the set, causing him to walk off the production. He is harder on himself in restropect than with Judy, not seeing her inner turmoil at the time and now realizing how badly she needed a supportive friend despite her belligerence. (A funnier but similar battle emerged two decades later when Martin was hired to be vocal arranger for the Broadway production of SUGAR BABIES and found Ann Miller equally willful when it came to advice on how to best deliver a song.) Martin sent Garland a note years later who responded with a loving telegram as tall as Garland herself which he had framed.
There's not that much about Martin's personal life but then many a serious musician puts their music above all else and this is undoubtably how he lived during the peak years of his career. Martin is quite frank though about his years battling "speed" which left him an emotional and physical mess even many years after he conquered the vice. Most important to his full recovery was becoming "born again" Christian in the 1970's and although he writes of his joy in embracing religion he is not an confrontational Bible thumper. Feinstein writes in the foreward that Martin's "unwavering faith and appreciation for life...gives others a sense of security and comfort"; Tony Bennett on the back jacket states Martin is "the single most talented and finest human being I know."
One big surprise is how unhappy Martin was during his contract with MGM; producer Arthur Freed apparently was quite a terror not only to Martin but to such stars as Lucille Ball, whom Martin writes that Freed wounded so badly with his tongue that Lucy was unable to return to the studio for days.
One of the lovely things about the book is how Martin repeatedly goes out of his way to praise many of his contemporaries, friends, and associates. He is an eloquent defender of Mickey Rooney against his reputation of being tempermental and his analysis of his songwriting peers (always positive) is as superb as a music critic. There's also lots of good humor too as when Martin recalls Jerome Kern's comments to him and Blane: "I think that was disgracefully unpatriotic of you to write 'Buckle Down Winsocki' when we're at war with Japan" even occasional black humor as Gore Vidal tells him as they watch Princess Diana's funeral, "Do we really want Elton John to sing at our funerals?"
This beautifully produced book (loaded with many rare photos) is sure to be treasured by lovers of musicals be they Broadway or movie, or fans of just good music. Hugh Martin is a true hero; a brillant talent and a truly good man. Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Mr. Martin and thank you for the music of our lives!
Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door OverviewHugh Martin: The Boy Next Door is an enchanting jaunt through the Golden Era of Broadway and the MGM musicals. This firsthand account captures the energy and excitement of those special times, with eyewitness tales of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and dozens more. Hugh recounts the origins of some of America's most beloved songs, including the perennial favorite, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Martin also reveals some secrets that only he could know: the truth about his composition partner Ralph Blane, his addiction to the infamous Dr. Feelgood, Max Jacobson; how he was instrumental in turning Gene Kelly from a performer to a choreographer during the staging of Best Foot Forward; and what it was really like to be part of the MGM musical production machine. As Hugh enters his 96th year, this could be America's last chance to hear these stories from a living source. They are full of his signature charm, grace, musicality, and poeticism.

The Shocking Miss Pilgrim: A Writer in Early Hollywood ReviewIt's hard to believe the world described by Frederica Sagor Maas in her memoir "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim" existed within the lifetimes of people alive today. So many of those who were once household names are now forgotten, so many of the places changed irrevocably.
Yet many of Ms. Maas' experiences & views will come as quite a surprise to the younger generation who tend to think they invented sex, drugs & partying. It's a revelation to hear a woman born in 1900, talking about herself at 20 state "I considered sex something natural like eating or getting dressed. Once it was over, it was over."
For a lifelong LA resident (now in exile) like myself, the greatest pleasure of this book was reading about what life was like in the entertainment capital at the beginning of it's reign. Now decrepit apartment houses described when they were desirable addresses; crowded urban corridors that were once sylvan wildlife areas! What surprises lurk here for those who know LA well!
For the general reader, the memoir moves along well, with Ms. Maas' tart comments always enlivening the recollections. The writing style is sparse & not especially descriptive as you would expect from someone who got her start writing scenarios for silent film. I did feel the book could benefit from some fleshing out; entire decades pass in a few paragraphs, the section describing the making of the film the book is entitled after is only a few pages long, & there were many experiences mentioned that would have benefitted from more description. But I guess at nearly 100 the past must often seem a film at fast forward & Ms. Maas' memory is to be commended!
This book is a valuable addition to the memoirs from the Golden Age of Film. It is especially valuable because it's from someone who was not viewing the industry from the heights but rather from the trenches. I salute Frederica Sagor Maas for having the honesty & clear-sightedness to produce this autobiography & for living the life she has led.The Shocking Miss Pilgrim: A Writer in Early Hollywood Overview

America's Film Legacy: The Authoritative Guide to the Landmark Movies in the National Film Registry ReviewThe National Film Registry is a fascinating endeavour. It collects, in the Library of Congress, what it deems the most important films in our history. NOT the best, necessarily (some of them are downright awful... Elia Kazan's "Wild River", anyone?); not necessarily the most famous (I'll wager there isn't a movie buff alive who won't find at least one or two films he/she's never heard of before). Even being a full-length film isn't required,(any number of 7 minute cartoons and, from earlier days, brief snippets like "The Kiss"). All that IS required is that the film, in some way or other, has contributed something unique to the history and/or art of film. What have each of the films in this book, the first 500 selections, contributed? THAT is what this marvelously readable compendium is all about! Indeed, I can't imagine ANY film fan worthy of the name who WOULDN'T want to read this.America's Film Legacy: The Authoritative Guide to the Landmark Movies in the National Film Registry Overview

The Golden Girls of MGM: Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly and Others ReviewUnfortunately, it seems to be an increasingly popular trend today to try and destroy the reputations of deceased screen legends who can no longer defend themselves. This is certainly not the first of its kind, and it's obviously not the last either (too bad!). This book has many brief chapters, each one filled with the worst scandals (abortions, adulterous affairs, criminal activities, etc.) of a specific female screen legend, such as Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly. Elizabeth Taylor, Hedy Lamarr, and several others.
The sections on Lana Turner, Greta Garbo, and Hedy Lamaar were especially infuriating, filled with rumors that even the National Enquirer would hesitate to print. For example, according to this book, Mickey Rooney and Lana Turner had an affair in the late 1930's which resulted in Lana having an abortion. Lana Turner already denied this rumor, and the very idea of a beautiful goddess like Lana Turner going for baby-faced Mickey Rooney is, quite frankly, disgusting and totally unbelievable. It also hints strongly that she had an affair with Clark Gable, although in her memoir she wrote that they had no chemistry off-screen. While some may find this kind of book entertaining, I think it's in poor taste. The book also describes Hedy Lamarr's orgies and bi-sexual relationships, and basically tries to pass her off as an arrogant nymphomaniac (the author does the same thing with Garbo).
This book quickly summarizes the screen careers and lives of these great actresses yet goes into great detail about their sexual activity (and preferences). Don't be too naive when reading about the many imperfections of these famous actresses. After all, there is some truth to many of the scandals mentioned, but there are also plenty of rumors that no one could posibly prove to be true. And after all, the author is merely rehashing what you've already read in previous books written by better authors. I suggest that instead of reading this trash you buy a well-researched biography. The Golden Girls of MGM: Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Judy Garland, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly and Others Overview

Buzz: The Life and Art of Busby Berkeley (Screen Classics) ReviewThis is a newly published book on the life and art of Busby Berkeley. Berkeley was a pioneer in the early days of American cinema and although as a director he lacked the all round character of a man like Orson Welles he easily made up for this with his ability to entertain people. The book starts out by examining Berkeley's family ancestry and takes you through his early days as a struggling stage director in New York followed by his first film roles, his car accident and subsequent trial and finishes with his demise in 1976. Some of the information contained in this book was previously examined in a TV documentary shown in 1998 called "Busby Berkeley going through the roof", but where this book expands is by gaining access to his unpublished autobiography which fills in lots of spaces and ads a lot more detail, invaluable information you would never have known had the book not been published.
This isn't a glossy film book loaded with images it's a flat out biography and if you're a fan of his work then you should find it interesting. In the early days of cinema when most of his contemporaries where busy ripping of early German and Russian filmmaking techniques Berkeley pioneered whole new styles and never got the credit he deserved.

The Fixers: Eddie Mannix, Howard Strickling and the MGM Publicity Machine ReviewI'm a big fan of classic Hollywood, and in the many star biographies I've read, the names of Eddie Mannix and Howard Strickling crop up often. When I found an entire book, just about the two of them, I pounced.
Fleming has some fascinating stories to tell, and at first glance, most of the anecdotes appear to be, for the most part, well documented. When he relies on his own theories, he clearly states that this is the case; even when he just theorizing, he seems to have a good basis in fact, or what facts can still be uncovered after all these years, and after all the covering-up Mannix and Strickling did. His theories about, for example, the deaths of Paul Bern and George Reeves seem sound, on the face of them. I was shocked to read of Wallace Beery's alleged involvement in the beating death of Ted Healy, founder of the Three Stooges, but even that seems to be reasonably well proven.
He does a good amount of research about the early lives of Strickling and Mannix, a topic that has never been explored at any length before. He also provides a detailed history of the origins of the motion picture industry and the births of the major studios, much of which will be familiar to scholars of Hollywood history.
I started to seriously doubt his accuracy for the first time around page 166, when he describes Jean Harlow's death as being caused by "uremic poisoning caused by an infection from wisdom teeth surgery the month before." It's odd, because Fleming previously made several references to David Stenn's excellent biography of Harlow; Fleming apparently didn't read it all the way through, however, since Stenn provided proof that Harlow's death from kidney failure stemmed from her bout with scarlet fever at age 16 (her kidneys had been damaged by the fever and gradually failed her over the next 10 years until her death).
Then I started noticing the various references to author Charles Higham, and I thought, "uh-oh." Higham is the now-notorious author of several Hollywood "biographies" (and I use that term loosely) that are chock-full of wild inaccuracies, the most notable among them being his accusations that Errol Flynn was a Nazi spy. His biography of Louis B. Mayer was also filled with laughable mistakes. Higham's books are listed in the bibliography, along with Kenneth Anger's atrocious collections of Hollywood rumors and nasty gossip. Fleming's credibility took another dip.
So in the end, I'm torn. In some places, Fleming seems to have done a great amount of research (although in some cases his sources are dubious at best). He does a good job of laying some myths to rest and trying to sort out the details of others, such as Clark Gable's various drunken car accidents, and rumors that he at one point struck and killed a pedestrian. On the other hand, he does tend to go into more detail than is plausible about the star's sex lives and orientations, making assertions that he can't possibly know or prove are true. Overall, I would say, enjoy the book, but take it with a grain of salt. The only people who could truly tell this story are Mannix and Strickling themselves, and except for a few tantalizing tidbits passed on to their friends throughout the years, they chose to keep their silence. The Fixers: Eddie Mannix, Howard Strickling and the MGM Publicity Machine OverviewEddie Mannix and Howard Strickling are virtually unknown outside of Hollywood and little-remembered even there, but as General Manager and Head of Publicity for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, they lorded over all the stars in Hollywood's golden age from the 1920s through the 1940s—including legends like Garbo, Dietrich, Gable and Garland. When MGM stars found themselves in trouble, it was Eddie and Howard who took care of them—solved their problems, hid their crimes, and kept their secrets. They were "the Fixers." At a time when image meant everything and the stars were worth millions to the studios that owned them, Mannix and Strickling were the most important men at MGM. Through a complex web of contacts in every arena, from reporters and doctors to corrupt police and district attorneys, they covered up some of the most notorious crimes and scandals in Hollywood history, keeping stars out of jail and, more importantly, their names out of the papers. They handled problems as diverse as the murder of Paul Bern (husband of MGM's biggest star, Jean Harlow), the studio-directed drug addictions of Judy Garland, the murder of Ted Healy (creator of The Three Stooges) at the hands of Wallace Beery, and arranging for an unmarried Loretta Young to adopt her own child—a child fathered by a married Clark Gable. Through exhaustive research and interviews with contemporaries, this is the never-before-told story of Eddie Mannix and Howard Strickling. The dual biography describes how a mob-related New Jersey laborer and the quiet son of a grocer became the most powerful men at the biggest studio in the world.

Raoul Walsh: The True Adventures of Hollywood's Legendary Director (Screen Classics) ReviewI have always loved Raoul Walsh's movies ... "High Sierra," "White Heat," "They Died with Their Boots On," "The Roaring Twenties!" I've loved them since I was a kid. And I've always wondered about the personal side of this director. Well, finally I know about him from reading Moss' book. This biography does a super job of telling us all who Raoul Walsh was when he was away from the camera. He was a great teller of tales, especially the ones he told about himself. Moss does a great job telling the reader about every aspect of Walsh's life -- his marriages, his relationship with his actors and actresses, and how important his movies still are in American cinema.
This is biography at its very best. Moss digs in and comes up with a vivid portrait of Walsh. He's right there on the page -- on every page of this book. She has researched her subject extremely well! If you finally want to know who Walsh REALLY was, look no further than this fascinating biography of this fascinating man!Raoul Walsh: The True Adventures of Hollywood's Legendary Director (Screen Classics) OverviewRaoul Walsh (1887--1980) was known as one of Hollywood's most adventurous, iconoclastic, and creative directors. He carved out an illustrious career and made films that transformed the Hollywood studio yarn into a thrilling art form. Walsh belonged to that early generation of directors -- along with John Ford and Howard Hawks -- who worked in the fledgling film industry of the early twentieth century, learning to make movies with shoestring budgets. Walsh's generation invented a Hollywood that made movies seem bigger than life itself. In the first ever full-length biography of Raoul Walsh, author Marilyn Ann Moss recounts Walsh's life and achievements in a career that spanned more than half a century and produced upwards of two hundred films, many of them cinema classics. Walsh originally entered the movie business as an actor, playing the role of John Wilkes Booth in D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (1915). In the same year, under Griffith's tutelage, Walsh began to direct on his own. Soon he left Griffith's company for Fox Pictures, where he stayed for more than twenty years. It was later, at Warner Bros., that he began his golden period of filmmaking. Walsh was known for his romantic flair and playful persona. Involved in a freak auto accident in 1928, Walsh lost his right eye and began wearing an eye patch, which earned him the suitably dashing moniker "the one-eyed bandit." During his long and illustrious career, he directed such heavyweights as Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Errol Flynn, and Marlene Dietrich, and in 1930 he discovered future star John Wayne.

Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford ReviewI totally agree with "riverscircus" perfect review. The lady definitely knows her Crawford!
I agree that the photographic elements of this book are absolutely appalling, including the book's cover (I know exactly what website it was snagged from). The photos inside are of ghastly quality, pixilated and blurry. But more important than this, is that most aspects of Crawford's life and career are merely glossed over in a paragraph or two. There simply isn't "enough" in this book. As others have stated, very little is new information in this book, and what IS new, is almost totally irrelevant.
I was wildly excited about this book before it arrived (due to the author's good reputation and because I thought it would bring new insight into the woman known as Joan Crawford), only to discover it was half as long as his book on Marilyn Monroe, who lived half as long as Crawford!
The book reads like thrown-together-facts taken from, at times, dubious sources, and tossed out to the book stores.Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford Overview
The definitive biography of a remarkable woman and true legend of film

Joan Crawford was one of the most incandescent film stars of all time, yet she may have also been one of the most misunderstood. In this brilliantly researched, thoughtful, and intimate biography, bestselling author Donald Spoto goes beyond the popular caricature-the abusive, unstable mother portrayed in her adopted daughter Christina Crawford's memoir, Mommie Dearest-to give us a three-dimensional portrait of the real woman behind the actress, her dazzling career, and her extraordinary life and times.

Based on new archival information and exclusive interviews, Possessed traces Crawford's fifty years of memorable performances in such film classics as Rain, The Women, Mildred Pierce, and Sudden Fear, which are as startling and vivid today as when they were first released. Spoto goes behind the myths to examine the rise and fall of the studio system; Crawford's four marriages; her passionate, thirty-year on-and-off affair with Clark Gable; her friendships and rivalries with other stars; the truth behind the scathing stories in her daughter's memoir; and more.

Infamous Players: A Tale of Movies, the Mob, (and Sex) ReviewI wanted so much to like this book. It's a real snooze. Every "story" it contains is covered elsewhere in better books. Seems like it was written in one day. No logical arrangement to the events Mr. Bart is talking about. Luckily it spares us the normal "I was born a poor kid in Brooklyn..." stuff these sort of books usually contain. It doesn't seem like anyone edited the book and it reads more like a compilation of previously published articles then a well-thought-out "tale" as the title suggests. Several times, Mr. Bart mentions the same event in different chapters as if it's the first time relaying it to us without adding any additional information or details to the event.Infamous Players: A Tale of Movies, the Mob, (and Sex) OverviewIn 1967, Peter Bart, then a young family man and rising reporter for the New York Times, decided to upend his life and enter into the dizzying world of motion pictures. Infamous Players is the story of Bart's whirlwind journey at Paramount, his role in its triumph and failures, and how a new kind of filmmaking emerged during that time.
When Bart was lured to Paramount by his friend and fellow newcomer, the legendary Robert Evans, the studio languished, its slate riddled with movies that were out of touch with the dynamic sixties. By the time Bart had left Paramount in 1975, the studio had completed a remarkable run with such films as The Godfather, Rosemary's Baby, Harold and Maude, Love Story, Chinatown, Paper Moon, and True Grit. But this new golden era at Paramount was also fraught with chaos and company turmoil. Drugs, sex, runaway budgets, management infighting, and even the Mafia started finding their way onto the Paramount backlot, making it surely one of the worst-run studios in the history of the movie industry.
As Peter reflects on the New Hollywood era at Paramount with behind-the-scenes details and insightful analysis, here too are his fascinating recollections of the icons from that era: Warren Beatty, Steve McQueen, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Polanski, and Frank Sinatra among others.
For over five decades, first on the inside as a studio executive, and later as the longtime editor-in-chief of Variety, Peter Bart has viewed Hollywood from an incomparable vantage point. The stories he tells and the lessons we learn from Infamous Players are essential for anyone who loves movies.

Judy: A Legendary Film Career ReviewIf you are just discovering Judy Garland, then this book is a must buy. Filled with beautiful photos, first-hand anecdotes, and a well-organized format, the reader will get a sense of what an amazing force Judy Garland was/is in the entertainment world and what her peers thought of her as well. For die-hard Garland fans, this book will not be anything to knock you out of your chair. The majority of the beautiful photos have already been seen and most of the anecdotes have previously been heard or published. For example, it was great to see all the "Annie Get Your Gun" wardrobe test shots in one place, but only one or two were new to me. I was hoping that this book would be filled with rarities, but instead, it's a thoughtful tribute put together by one of Garland's most knowledgeable fans, John Fricke. One of the curious choices for this book is a design theme of repeating the same photo on one page in different shades. Sure, it looks nice, but for Garland fans & scholars, the space could definitely have been used better by filling it with different photos or more quotes. As a stand-alone book, it should really rate five stars; when compared to the abundance of other books about Garland already available that cover much of the same material, I would probably say three stars is more appropriate as I have to wonder whether there was a really a need for this one in the first place.Judy: A Legendary Film Career OverviewThrough her incomparable work on screen, stage, record, radio, and television, Judy Garland earned renown as "The World's Greatest Entertainer." It was as a motion picture star though, that she first rose to international fame. From her feature film debut in 1936 through the aptly titled I Could Go on Singing in 1963, she lit up the screen with a magic uniquely hers—and dazzled world-wide audiences of all ages.

Early Universal City (Images of America) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) ReviewThis was a very interesting book depicting Universal City from its inception through the silent film era. Wonderfully illustrated, with lots of great stories about the actors, directors, film studios, sets, location, and the filming process from the very beginning of the motion picture industry. Having been born and raised in southern califormia, and I really enjoyed the photograghs of the Hollywood/Burbank area when it was wide open country. If you are interested in the silent film era and early film studios, you will love this book!Early Universal City (Images of America) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) OverviewKnown as much today for its theme park, Universal City is also the largest and the longest continuously operating movie studio in Â"Hollywood.Â" The Universal Film Manufacturing Company was formed by a dozen independent producers in 1912, and Universal City was designed to provide a single facility in which to make their films. Since its official opening on March 15, 1915, Universal City has served as a training ground for great directors such as John Ford, William Wyler, and James Whale and as home to stars like Hoot Gibson, Deanna Durbin, Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Sr. and Jr., and Tom Mix. This evocative volume explores the studio that brought The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Dracula (1930), Frankenstein (1931), and 100 Men and a Girl (1936) to the screen.

City of Dreams: The Making and Remaking of Universal Pictures ReviewCity of Dreams is a great book to read if you want to know more about the history behind Hollywood. From the beginnings of Carl Laemmle in 1906 up to the mid-1990's this book is a very thorough history of Universal Pictures. I especially found the information about the beginning of Universal City very interesting. MGM: Hollywood's Greatest Backlot ReviewThis book is one of the finest books I have ever seen produced on the subject of motion pictures! Like another reviewer I found myself looking at the photographs for minutes at a time trying to see the details in each backlot scene. It is truly a work of spectacular dimensions and I congratulate the authors who have tried to create something for every cinema lover and classic motion picture collector. I have just retired from 40 years in the television and motion picture industry and I have never seen a compilation such as this. I will be buying copies of this book for Christmas and birthday gifts! When you find something you enjoy as much as I enjoyed this work you will want to share it with everyone. Put it on your Christmas list - you can't go wrong!MGM: Hollywood's Greatest Backlot Overview
