Critical Studies in Media Commercialism ReviewThis is a good collection of media essays with a marxist and technophobe bent that includes articles by some of the most important scholars working in media criticism today. It points up the difficulties and complexities of the complete domination of media by commerce. In addition, it brings the material into the age of globalization rather than looking at media as single technological units. One area I think that it misses is the cell phone revolution, because that could create a counter model to the centralizing aspects of commercial media.

The Art of Digital Music: 56 Visionary Artists and Insiders Reveal Their Creative Secrets (Includes DVD) ReviewI really wanted to like this book after reading all the reviews. And I must admit that some of the interviews are quite interesting. However, almost all of the 50+ interviews are limited to just two pages, with each interviewee answering just a couple of questions. The latter portions of the book are dedicated to some light advice on music production and the business of music, as well some speculation on the future of the music industry. Perhaps there are just too many topics to allow any one topic to receive a satisfying treatment. Many of the interviews read like an article you would find in Sound on Sound, Electronic Musician or such magazines (that's a good thing) but are even skimpier on content and cover a far-reaching range of topics. This biggest disappointment, however, is the DVD. It mostly contains audio excerpts of the telephone interviews and after a while you just lose interest clicking around on them. There are only a few performance-oriented video clips, but these are not the best quality and their content is of questionable interest. All in all, I think the book has some interesting elements but I'm not sure there's enough there to justify the space on your bookshelf. Media Literacy ReviewThis is the assigned book for a class at University and in no way interests me aside from the requirement that I buy it. What does interest me is that the U-Bookstore is selling this same book for almost $80 and it's here for almost half price.
I considered getting the Kindle version, but with the actual book I can sell it to the bookstore and likely get a good chunk of my money back when the class is over. That's the problem with Kindle editions, you're paying close (sometimes even more) to what you would for a new dead tree book, but without the option to sell/trade/gift it when you're finished.

If, however, you are concerned about the Internet and potentially where it might go in the near future, or more specifically, how it might wind up controlled, this book will be an interesting and informative read. Important too because communication and information dissemination are vital to the freedom of us all.
Columbia University Professor Tim Wu takes us on an in-depth tour of the history of the communication empires of telephone, radio, television, and now the Internet. Wu's analyses and conclusions are both brilliant as well as at times somewhat surprising. Every page gives evidence of Wu's thorough research, careful thinking and insights that went into the writing of this fine work.
The internet has become part of the lives of almost everyone, with its freeing and empowering presence; in fact in important ways it has become indispensable. A not-too-surprising worry might be that the federal government may someday try to control it, not so overwhelmingly as does the government of China of course, but the possibility is there.
What Wu so sagatiously points out is that that threat of control could just as easily, or actually more easily, come from the private sector, because in fact the existence of the internet and its smooth functioning are dependent, not on the government, but private enterprise. A different kind of monopoly looms ahead of us as a distinct danger, and this present information age presents new policy and regulation challenges.
One hopes that the right government officials at the federal level take heed to this awesomely researched book.
If you would like to understand more accurately recent decades as well as the present time the huge corporations that have in the past but also could one of these days control the ways and means of communication, by all means give this worthy work a read.
Highly recommended.
