Universal Studios Vs. The 1978 Battlestar Galactica Series: The Common Sense Manual ReviewFirst of all, let's get the positives out of the way. The author is clearly passionate about his subject matter: he honestly believes his ideas, which is always a big plus. Second, he's kind of right about his central (non-conspiratorial) premise. While I'm no fan of the older Battlestar Galactica, I recognize that it had a very different premise and it was clearly a family show meant to be enjoyed broadly. The newer one, produced by Ronald D. Moore, is harder science fiction, military science fiction, and appeals to a wholly different crowd. This much is true.
Oh, and it's short. It's in the 250s as far as pages go, but the margins are far enough into the page that there isn't much text cluttering the paper.
The author tells you on the very first page two very important things. First, that there is no documentation supporting his view - it's based on observation and conjecture - and that he writes in the style of his opponents on the Internet. The first point is fair: he doesn't claim the book to be a scholarly work, so I'm not going to knock his writing for it.
The second point, however, is part of what makes this book bad literature. I'm all for evolution of the English language, but this is nothing short of assault and battery on it. There are errors of all kinds throughout the book, both in spelling and grammar, and - at least for me - it ruins the reading experience. I would suggest the author clean it up a bit for future editions to make it easier and clearer. It shouldn't be hard, since it's not particularly complicated grammar in any case.
Another negative of the book is the author's tendency towards repetitive arguments. The author goes off on rants against opponents he has encountered on the Internet, or obstacles the 1978 Battlestar Galactica TV series has encountered in being remade, rants which are tangential, usually detract from the chapter's overall theme (though, granted, not always), and above all, are repeated several times in adjacent chapters, instead of being collected in a single one. I realize that some linking of ideas through the book is necessary, but this is pure overkill.
A third negative is the author's excessive reliance on italics as a crutch to emphasize comments. I'm all for getting Bonnie Hammer and professional wrestling the hell out of the Sci-Fi Channel offices, but the stylistic choice again ruins it, making it seem less legitimate. Furthermore, it ties into the previous negative, because many of these repeated arguments are more and more italicized as the text goes on.
Lastly, the author failed to do his research in calling Ronald D. Moore's series a failure, given the Nielsen ratings it has earned. I assume this is an example of the conspiracy against the 1978 series, but it's not explained in the text how the author knows this, or how the author knows the real ratings. I'm willing to entertain the notion that it's a cover-up, however, just because I don't work in that industry and thus can't say.
If the author could clean up the English and calm himself a little more, this would be a fine book. As it is, I have to say it's the product of good intentions that fail to translate into good literature.Universal Studios Vs.
