Get A Reel Job ReviewI first found out about Philip Nemy through allexperts.com, where I contacted him in regards to getting into films, etc. for my daughter as she has being doing commercials and a few extra jobs on films but only locally in San Francisco. I wanted to find out more about getting into more of a principal role, etc. Philip Nemy was wonderful, answered all my questions, etc., and recommended his book to get more information. This book is a very valuable tool for anyone wanting to get into the motion picture industry whether it be as an actor, writer, director, etc.! This book covers every aspect of the industry, provides you with basically a step-to-step guide on what you need to do. No one could ask for a better book!
If you are serious about a career in the motion picture industry, no matter what aspect of the industry, I would highly recommend you purchase this book as this man knows his stuff! He use to work for Disney pictures and has now started his own company. The "inside" information can largely be found on the net and/or in better-written books by screenwriters of prominence. The agent and producer listings are vague and of little help. The book tells you almost nothing about "what they want" and virtually nothing about "how to win them over." All in all, it's poorly written and verbose and could have been cut down to a third of its length. Some of it is shockingly inappropriate, such as recommending to African-American writers where they can get good fried chicken in LA. In sum, it's yet another add-water-and-stir screenwriting book by somebody long on self-aggrandizement and short on Hollywood experience. I also find it quite suspicious that twelve five-star reviews here on ... were posted within a three-day period. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: The Shooting Script (Newmarket Shooting Script Series) Review"Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!/Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd... Desires compos'd, affections ever ev'n,/Tears that delight, and sighs that waft to Heav'n." The original Alexander Pope poem suits the movie whose title it inspired, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," a unique, surreal film about memories, love and sorrow.
"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" deals with timid, conservative Joel, who bumps into ex-girlfriend Clementine at a store -- and finds she doesn't remember him. He finds a notice in his mail that she has had him erased from her memories, and angrily decides to have the same done. But during the procedure, Joel revisits the good times they had together, and finds that he doesn't want to lose his memories with Clementine.
This movie, by Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman, was one of the best of 2004, and one that isn't quickly forgotten. The screenplay is an excellent accompaniment; if there is a line or an image that didn't seem to make sense, it might make more sense here. "Eternal Sunshine" fans will also like the scenes that never made it to the final cut, and one scene got shuffled around.
Additionally, there is an interview at the end with Kaufman. In it, he describes his writing background, his collaborations with Gondry, clashes with Ben Affleck's horrific "Paycheck," memory, and that wonderful "Velveteen Rabbit" scene. Although, it could have used more of Kaufman's thoughts on the final product and the actors.
The stumbling blocks? Don't try reading the screenplay BEFORE seeing the movie, or you will be hopelessly lost. The script cuts wildly from the past, the present, inside and outside the characters' heads. It works wonderfully on the screen, but on paper it's hard to visualize just by the words alone. That, and this richly visual film is only represented by some murky black-and-white photos.
"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a wonderful script, which spawned a wonderful film. The Complete Book of Scriptwriting ReviewScriptwriting is a great all purpose review of both the creative and business sides of writing for TV, movies, animation, radio drama, and the stage. Straczynski is the perfect authority to write on these subjects, having garnered success in all those fields.
The book is a how to manual, with plenty of examples to follow. It also traces out the business side of selling what you write. Straczynski writes in a personable style, but pulls no punches. He helps a potentional writer separate his dreams from reality without crushing one's ambition. This book has been used in colleges as a textbook and upon reading it, yu'll see why. It's a handy reference tool that I have thumbed back through scores of times over the last 3 years. I give it the highest praise. Riding the Alligator: Strategies for a Career in Screenplay Writing (and not getting eaten) ReviewAs a rule of thumb, I generally avoid reading screenwriting books because they either make me feel anxious or feel like I'm somehow not a "true writer" because I don't follow the specific rules of screenwriting that the author has prescribed. So it was with great pleasure that when I read Pen Densham's RIDING THE ALLIGATOR, I felt quite the opposite.
This book is best described as "Screenwriting Spirituality" giving you the building blocks to create a career as a screenwriter and survive all the highs and lows that will inevitably come over that career. It is written in a very relaxed manner that was both informative and encouraging. Even as a seasoned writer, I felt it an incredibly worthwhile read, because it reaffirmed many of my own feelings and attitudes on the business as well as offered insightful takes on aspects I hadn't even considered.

Tales from the Script: 50 Hollywood Screenwriters Share Their Stories ReviewI loved this book even though I'm not a screenwriter. I picked it up because I'm a movie buff who loves behind-the-scenes stories. I never knew how badly screenwriters are treated, and I never knew how important screenplays are. But after reading this incredibly entertaining book, I feel like I just got to know all of the writers included. They're a fun bunch of people, they've seen everything there is to see in Hollywood, and their stories are just as compelling as the movies they write!
The photos of the writers make it feel like they're sitting right in front of me, and the extra interviews at the end of every chapter are really cool -- it's great to get the viewpoints of a development executive, a movie director, a guy who runs a script contest, etc. Thanks to "Tales from the Script," I have a new appreciation for how hard it is to write a movie, and I loved hearing all the stories about the making of "Bull Durham," "Butch Cassidy," "X-Men," "War of the Worlds," "The Mist," and so many others.
I know friends who write scripts, and I'm going to recommend this book to all of them, but it's not just for screenwriters. If you love movies, you'll enjoy this book as much as I did! Writing Subtext: What Lies Beneath ReviewMy wife and I have something we call "wife speak." On an occasional evening, she will ask me: "Do we have any ice cream?" I could easily say "yes" or "no" but what she's really asking is: "Can you check if we have ice cream, grab a bowl, scoop out a scoop - but not too much, drizzle some chocolate sauce on it and bring it to me?" The first question is subtext - the second question is "on the nose."
It was with great anticipation when I opened up Linda Seger's book "Writing Subtext" - first because her book "How to Make a Good Script Great" is in my top three of favorite screenwriting books. The second was that I was looking for a book on subtext. It's one of the hardest things to explain to fledgling screenwriters (and to some not-so-fledgling screenwriters, too).
The way I've always described subtext is: "This is what your movie is REALLY about." When "The Deer Hunter" came out (in 1977!) I read a letter to the editor that described it as a terrible film about guys who get drunk and hunt deer. Obviously this person was looking at the film only on a surface level - not what it was REALLY about: love, sacrifice, friendship.
Linda Seger, though, rips the subtext out of those two basic concepts. Where I looked at subtext only in the items of dialogue and "what the story is about" she actually takes it much further. Relating subtext to both those basic concepts but also taking it the levels of gestures and actions, images and metaphors and even genres. And, honestly, I've never really looked at that way - but created it nonetheless.
In the third week of my class - I have a class called "Showing Character" - it is this class where we explore all the various opportunities the writer has in using visual clues to show character. Everything from clothing, tattoos, cars, etc. I had never thought of it as subtext - just what you do when you create characters. Redefining it as subtext is brilliant, though, because that's what you're REALLY doing. So many scripts I've read where the writer writes: "Joe drives up in a car." WHAT KIND? "Julie watches TV." WHAT SHOW? "Bill has a tattoo on his upper arm." WHAT OF?
Ms. Seger does a great job sprinkling multiple film examples throughout her book. But I'll suggest a few more: "Rear Window" has amazing subtext in the first 3 minutes. The beginnings of the film "The Breakfast Club" and "The Big Chill" also do a masterful job getting across multiple characters in very quick succession. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: This is when writing really becomes fun - where you have the story on one level but then, under the surface, into the depths of the subtext you have where the story really becomes alive and real and amazing.
Finally a book that teaches the writer how to use subtext to tell their story, not only through dialogue but through actions as well. This is a book that will truly bring life to your screenplay and turn your possible good script into a potentially GREAT script.
Final note: of course, when I ask my wife if there is any ice cream my usual subtext is: "Are we going to `cuddle' tonight?" But then she just brings me a bowl of ice cream...maybe I should use less subtext.
