Writing Television Comedy ReviewHaving written professionally for thirty-plus years, I've read dozens of books on "how to write." They range from the sublime to the ridiculous, and only a relative few have been -- and continue to be -- helpful. Jerry Rannow's delightful Writing Television Comedy is a welcome addition to my bookshelf, not because I'm interested in writing TV comedy but because it helps me WRITE -- period! While the book does target the aspiring sitcom writer, it also offers valuable tips and inspiration for ALL writers.
I often struggle with so-called writer's block, and Rannow's book provides me with several different techniques for breaking through it. The chapter entitled Managing The Story Muscle is particularly helpful, but I can open the book almost at random and find a jump-start to get me going. Sometime's it's just a reminder, like: "So-called writer's block is simply FEAR, but when you sit down and concentrate and focus on the story at hand, you erase that fear." And sometimes I discover that the problem was in my plot, or a character wasn't ringing true.
The book also reminds me of ways to look for the humorous aspects of life, because I frequently use humor in my own writing: in radio and TV spots, print ads, newspaper articles, and the novel I'm currently completing. So if you're already a paid professional or still a wannabe writer, I highly recommend Jerry Rannow's book. Gene Kelly: A Life of Dance and Dreams ReviewUgh, where to begin? As others have written before me, there are so many basic errors in this book that I wonder at the author's "research." If he had spent more time getting the facts straight instead of pretending to know what Gene Kelly was thinking during the AFI tribute, then this book may not be the shambles we readers have had to endure. As I was reading, finding the errors actually became a game for me. I would sit there with my book and pen and paper, just daring Yudkoff to pitch out another mistake. Here are the ones I found: (I'm sure there are several others.)
1. Shirley Maclaine's dress at the AFI Tribute is BLACK not RED. An error that is SO basic, it shows how careless this author is throughout the entire book.
2. In For Me and My Gal, Judy Garland's character was NOT engaged to the George Murphy character. Hey Yudkoff, it would help if you saw the movies of the person about whom you're writing, don't you think???
3. Again, in For Me and My Gal, the Judy Garland and Gene Kelly characters are NOT "immediate sensations," as the author states. Sheesh.
4. Yup, another one regarding For Me and My Gal: the "author" (I'm beginning to use this term more loosely) states that Gene Kelly's character is a solo act in Europe. NOT TRUE. Watch the movie you careless dolt!
5. In Living in a Big Way, Yudkoff says that there is a dance with a trained dog and a dance with a statue. AHEM! They are the same dance. Yikes, this is getting embarrassing! I'm glad I'm not this author!
6. Here's one of the worst: When Yudkoff refers to Vera-Ellen's character in On the Town as "MISS SUBWAYS!" Oh my gosh. Her title was "Miss Turnstiles." Hmm..sounds like someone really needs to sit down with some of the movies before writing any more books.
7. Now here's something I've never seen before in any book, using the exact same quote TWICE. On page 197 and on page 202 he uses the same GK quote in referring to the pioneering on-location film technique of On the Town. (Of course, by this time, who knows if those are even real quotes? So much has already been fabricated!)
SHAME ON THE AUTHOR, THE EDITOR, and THE PUBLISHER who bought the book!!! Gene Kelly fans have waited for 20 years for an updated biography of this legendary dancer, choreographer, and director. The readers deserve better and so does Mr. Kelly himself.
Other annoying things are the way the author's internal monologue Gene Kelly is having with himself at the AFI Tribute(which I gave up on and stopped reading) basically just criticizes and insults everyone. And don't even get me started on the way he keeps hinting at homosexual rumors and portrays a young Betsy Blair as this side of a nymphomaniac. Plus, the book only focuses on about half of Gene Kelly's life. Twenty years are sideswiped in a couple of paragraphs and 40-some years are glossed over in a few pages. How about giving Gene Kelly some credit for being a single widowed father who raised his two younger children who lost their mother to cancer at ages 8 and 11? How about informing your readers that this generous father turned down numerous projects so that he could provide a stable home for his children and this was when he was in his 60's? All Yudkoff cares about are the glamour days. Not a nice way to treat your subject, who you claim to admire.
If you're as frustrated as I am, do what the author did, just learn what you can about Gene Kelly from the 1974 book written by Clive Hirschhorn. You get several treats in one: ACTUAL quotes from Gene Kelly and those who knew him, ACTUAL facts about the man, and a thoroughly enjoyable read.
As for this book: IT IS A DISGRACE! The entire thing is written like the author is wearing a neon sign saying, "Hey everyone! Look at me! I'm writing a book about Gene Kelly!" OK! So you wrote your terrible book, now do something useful like apologize to your readers. If I was Betsy Blair, or Kerry, Timothy, or Bridget Kelly, I would sue the pants off this guy. Writing the Romantic Comedy ReviewI've been looking for a book like this for a long time. Most of the screenwriting books out there just cover the usual nuts and bolts of screenwriting and cite the same movies as examples (i.e. Citizen Kane, The Verdict). I found this book very useful because it was specific for the Romantic comedy genre. The author obviously studied the genre exensively as hundreds of romantic comedies old and new are cited. The book has a very good chapter on the basic structure road map of romantic comedy--but leaves enough flexibility and points out exceptions to the rules...like Sleepless in Seattle where the couple doesn't technically meet until the very last scene (but the screenwriter got around the rule well). I also liked the way the book lays this out to you in Layman's terms, not like the Robert McKee book where you end up more confused by the end than when you started. The book also offers some good chapters on Theme, imagery,dialogue, character chemistry, story credibility and "being funny" and offers specific case analyses at the end of the chapter to highlight what the author's talking about. The book also goes into the history of romantic comedy, the future, and a list of sub genres and sub categories--but what really made it worth my money was the chapters on theme and structure and the case studies. This Is Orson Welles ReviewSome have criticized this book, which Welles felt was the definitive word on his films, by stating that it never deals with Orson's children or his failed marriages. That has nothing to do with what this book is about. If you are looking for a biography then look elsewhere. This is Orson Welles talking about his films and his life in film and what he was trying to do and say. When I finished reading I knew that for once Welles was getting the final word on his films and that what he said was honest. If you want to really know him as an artist I would strongly recommend reading this book. It's a very fast read even though it's crammed full of insights. As a bonus it also contains the shooting script for Magnificent Ambersons which would have exceeded Citizen Kane in its beauty if RKO hadn't cut it to shreds. Psychology for Screenwriters ReviewFor any writer struggling to create powerful and believable characters, it is imperative that you understand the psychological aspects of why people do the things they do, why they behave in the ways they choose to, and what inner drives propel them towards potential greatness. The hero's journey talked about in myth and story has a structure based upon archetypes, themes and patters of human behavior that any writer can come to master when creating the perfect screenplay, and "Psychology For Screenwriters: Building Conflict in Your Script" by screenwriter and Assistant Professor of Psychology William Indick is a priceless guidebook for navigating the interior of the mind.
Written for screenwriters, with tons of examples of movies current and past that clarify the concepts, this book can also serve as an indespensable guide for writers of novels, who also grapple with making their characters believable, truthful and effective. Using Freudian psychology as well as the teachings of Carl Jung, Alfred Adler and the late, great mythologist Joseph Campbell, the author takes us on a highly detailed journey into the hero's journey itself, breaking apart each step of character development and providing a correlating psychological theme that underlies the motivations and actions of human beings. By doing this, the writer can absorb on a subconscious level what they then hope to realize in their work on a consious level - fully rounded, deeply real characters experiencing things that the audience can cheer for, relate to and feel authenticated by.
The book, which is thick and wordy and almost like a textbook, so filled with information is it, covers every aspect of human behavior and motivation, from psychosexuality to the conflict of identity crisis, from the hero's journey and its trials and pitfalls, to the many archetypes of persona and plot, to the different aspects of the heroine's journey, the existential conflict, the battle of ego and id, neurosis and narcissism, the defense mechanisms of the crafty ego, sibling rivalry, good versus evil, finding the inner animus, inferiority complexes, the power and metaphor of dreams and so very much more. In fact, reading this book can be somewhat intimidating for a writer who simply wants to "create better characters" and one can easily get bogged down in detail. But all that psychological stuff is truly worth it, because the end result is a greater understanding of human nature, which translates into writing that is more authentic, more profound, and more emotionally satisfying.
What works really well in this book are the many examples of how these aspects of personality show up in films most of us have seen before. This really allows the author to drive home his points and clarify his concepts in a way we call can understand - by relating it to what we've already experienced on the big screen. Even better are the many helpful sidebars, chapter summary points and insightful exercises all geared towards making sure that the writer, and reader, truly understands the material before closing the book and beginning to write.
I found this book to be a highly recommended "must-have" for writers serious about doing more than just popping out a commercial, story-driven script for a quick sale (ha-ha). This manual for serious character and story development is for those writers who truly want to create memorable people and plotlines that will connect with and move their audiences. One important suggestion, though. There is so much ground covered in this book that you might feel crippled by it when you are ready to write. Instead, read it, absorb the material, then set it aside long enough for it to sink into your psyche.
Then sit down and write, and watch your characters and your story take on a powerful and profoundly effective life of their own. Not only will you have learned more about what makes your characters tick, you will have learned a thing or two about yourself, which is really what writing is all about - expressing the self.Psychology for Screenwriters OverviewScreenwriters must understand human behavior to make their stories come alive. This book clearly describes theories of personality and psychoanalysis with simple guidelines, thought provoking exercises, vivid film images and hundreds of examples from classic movies.

The pictures alone are worth the price of the book. The background also tells about Lugosi's dialogue being cut out and what some of it was. It also explains the ending and the escape of Massey, Knowles, and Ouspenskaya (which is not shown in the film). And he says to "Wilber"(Lou)"I Said Come Back!"."Wilber Brown"sits on the rock and says"'No! I'm sitting right here and I'm not going back!".Until both Lou and the rock are zipped back into the cave and into the evil clutches of "Dracula"(Bele Lugosi) and "Dr.Sandra Morney"(Lenore Aubert).The book also shows some photos from the film and some wonderful behind the scenes candid pictures from the cast members,the film's director(Charlie Barton),The film's producer(Bob Arthur)and Dialogue Director(Norman Abbott..Bud's newphew)and the members of the Abbott & Costello families.There are also some thoughts about the making of the film from the team's family members and the true story of how this classic parody was conceived and filmed by the book's author:Mr.Riley.For fans of horror movies and for fans of classic comedy movies.This is one book to have in your collection.Bravo Phil!
