The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland 2007 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewWe were just at Disneyland two weekends ago (spring break for some folks), and spent two days (Fri & Sat) at Disneyland and one day (Sun)at Disney California, this book was FANTASTIC! I read this on our two-day drive down to Anaheim and mapped out our days using the plans available in the book and the program guide I got off Disney's website for the days we would be there... truly we hardly waited in line at all and rode everything we wanted to and saw TONS of shows. We also had so much "extra" time we were able to do some of our favorites (Soarin' and Star Tours for example) twice. We only opted to get FAST PASSES twice (the book explains it, thankfully)because we didn't really need to use them much as we were so easily getting on everything we wanted to go on. Best tip... Get to the park EARLY (hardly anyone did this, it is a crazy fact!) and follow one of the plans, really you don't need to be a drill sergeant about it or anything! We simply lead our family through the parks in the recommended order and had three extremely fun, stress free days! We spent far more time in line for food than for rides or shows. We also stayed across the street from Disneyland at one of the hotels listed in the book, which made it REALLY easy to leave and come back so I must also recommend spending the extra money if you can, it sure was nice for us(Our kids are 8 and 6, fyi.) This book made Disney fun for all of us and hardly ANY fighting or breakdowns, and our 8 yr old has autism... Birnbaum's Walt Disney World 2009 ReviewLooking for a guide to Walt Disney World? I think I can help. My family, along with two other families, recently spent a week at Disney, and we took five different travel books with us. We thought it would be fun to compare how useful the books were as we planned our trip and as we spent our days at the parks.
This review is the result of our efforts, with book rated from 1 star (awful) to 5 stars (great).
Before I start, you should know that our little reviewing group consisted of three couples, all in their early thirties. Between us we have three little girls, one little boy, a teenage girl, and a pair of grandparents that went along too.
We rated the books based on six criteria:
1. Helpfulness as a Trip Planner
Does the book offer tips on saving money or time? Does it help you get through the Orlando airport? Does it recommend hotels and restaurants to reserve and back up its reasons well? Does it have good advice about the Disney dining plan and which restaurants to eat at?
2. Helpfulness While at Disney World.
Is it worthwhile to take the guide with you? Does it help with last minute decisions? Is it fun to read as you wait for a restaurant table, or in a line for a ride or show?
3. Organization.
No matter how good a particular piece information is, if you can't find it, it doesn't do you any good. This is especially true in travel guides, when you often need a particular piece of information RIGHT NOW!
4. Current information.
Though all of these guides have "2009" in their title, are they really up-to-date? To find out, we picked out three things we know are new at Disney World for this year: The American Idol Experience show, the new promotion where guests get in free on their birthday, and the new room decor at the BoardWalk resort, where we stayed, and checked to see which books knew about them.
5. Addresses family needs
Since so many Disney World visitors are families, how does each book reflect that? Are there specific planning tips for families? Is there advice about which rides are too scary for little ones?
So, on to the reviews!
Birnbaum's Walt Disney World 2009 2 stars
Once published by travel guru Steve Birnbaum, today Birnbaum's Walt Disney World is an objective travel guide in name only. Now written and published by the Disney company, it offers nothing but cheers for everything Walt Disney World has to offer. Worse, a lazy attitude permeates everything, as if this is something Disney is forced to do but would really just forget about. As you would expect, there's precious little about saving money (except for a recommendation to "save" by buying the extra-cost Disney Disney Plan) and no quality ratings for attractions, restaurants or resorts beyond an occasional "Birnbaum's Best" logo. Chapter titles are confusing: restaurants are under "Good Meals Great Times;" water parks within "Everything Else in the World." The book was 1-for-3 on our accuracy test. It knew the American Idol show existed but had no information about it. Its room description for the Boardwalk Resort was two years out of date. It did not mention the birthday promotion. On the plus side, the book's relative few pages makes it the easiest of the Disney guides to scan through, and there are many illustrations of Mickey Mouse and other cartoon characters.
The Complete Walt Disney World 2009 5 stars
Outstanding organization and a wealth of color photos makes it easy to find particular information in The Complete Walt Disney World. Chapters are color coded, and subjects are grouped together well. For example, a Planning Your Trip chapter has a subsection on the Disney Dining Plan that clearly spells out the pluses and minuses of that add-on, and individual articles titled Saving Money (with 30 numbered tips), another called Saving Time. Restaurant reviews include good insight on character meals. Resort descriptions have more details than the other guides, though the authors provide little opinion beyond a star rating. Theme park information is superb. Attraction reviews, which can go on for multiple pages for major headliners like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, include "Fear Factors" as well as "Fun Finds," are practical for families and fun for Disney fans. There's a touring plan for each park that we found helpful. The Complete Guide was 3-for-3 in our accuracy test. The only downer: Except for hotel listings, the Complete Walt Disney World focuses exclusively on Walt Disney World. There's no mention of Universal Studios, Sea World, or even the Orlando airport.
Frommer's Walt Disney World and Orlando 2009 3 stars
Frommers is well written, well organized and in many ways thorough, but the author doesn't seem that familiar with Walt Disney World. The book has no tips on saving time or money, and its hotel and restaurant opinions aren't backed up with a lot of facts. Attraction descriptions are short paragraphs with no specifications and few tips. The book offers little take-along value, and hardly any specific information for families. Vague family information. There are no photos or illustrations. The book scored 0 for 3 on our accuracy test. It didn't know about the American Idol show, our new room decor, or Disney's birthday promotion.
Fodor's Walt Disney World 2009: plus Universal Orlando and SeaWorld 2 star
Like a weaker version of the Frommers guide, the Fodors one is less organized and offers even less planning advice. Its ride and show descriptions seem to be edited versions of those in the Unofficial Guide, which this company also publishes. Like Frommers, the book scored 0 for 3 on our accuracy test.
The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2009 4 stars
Is there an editor in the house? Packed with advice and information, the 848-page Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World is like your grandmother's attic: there's a lot of good stuff in there but so much junk to shift through! Actually it depends on the subject. If you have hours to dig through it, this massive tome can be a great planning tool. Page after page is devoted to subjects such as saving time or saving money. Incredibly detailed resort information includes which rooms, by number, offer the best views. Attraction summaries have details such as ratings by age group, but the authors comments are often so cynical they have value only if you find them funny. The Unofficial Guide scored 2 out of 3 on our accuracy test. It didn't know about Disney's birthday promotion. The book includes various Touring Plans, which offer step-by-step guidance for a day, or two, at each of the theme parks. These looked useful, but our group had too many individual interests to follow them. In short, this is a good book for those who aren't really fans of the Disney company, but want to take months to plan out a visit to its mecca.
So that's it! We determined that the Unofficial Guide and the Complete Guide are the best two books out there. As for which is the best for you, I think if you like Disney (or want a book that includes photography) you will like the Complete Guide best, but if you are headed there reluctantly (like, say, only to keep your kids happy), or also want information about SeaWorld or Universal, you will find the Unofficial Guide more to your liking. On Location: Cities of the World in Film ReviewI stumbled across this book in the film and TV section of a Barnes & Noble - what a wonderful idea! I can really recommend this book for anyone who loves the movies and wants to know where famous scenes were filmed. I always liked the idea of mixing travel and film, and that is what this book does.
Basically it takes a look at big world cities and tells you which films "belong" to them. Harry Potter is really well covered in the London chapter. One of my favorites is the New York City chapter, because I love "When Harry Met Sally" and found out exactly where they filmed the famous orgasm scene. The Rome chapter was wonderful, too, especially for fans of Roman Holiday - even the exact address of the apartment where the two stars spend that first scandalous night was listed. Then there's Tokyo, and Prague, and Beijing, and it just goes on. The maps are useful, the photos are really stunning, and I found the texts fun and easy to read.On Location: Cities of the World in Film OverviewMany movies are synonymous with the locations where they were filmed. On Location is a lighthearted, round-the-world tour of famous movies so you, too, can go "on location." Lonely Planet Los Angeles & Southern California (Regional Guide) ReviewWe spent a week in the LA area visiting a long term resident and used this book every day! We wanted to visit both tourist sites and places off the beaten track, and were able to do both. Our family had a diverse list of places to go and things to do - see a star or two, visit hollywood, visit some ethnic areas (such as Little Saigon for an article for chaobannewsletter.com), visit an aquarium, eat family friendly food, hit the beaches, go to an amusement park, etc. It helped us with everything.
My only quibble is that we could have used even more family oriented advice and recommendations.
I looked at five or six guidebooks before picking this one - both because I have used their guides before and because it seemed to do the best job with details and off the beaten track exploration. This definately was the right choice. Frommer's USA (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewWhile on the road (Las Vegas, Arizona and New Mexico) I reviewed three USA guides and my first choice was Fodor's, then Frommer's and finally, Let's Go.
Frommer's practical recommendations are judicious ("We highly recommend that you rent a car when in Las Vegas". YES). The guide's 'What to See & Do' is worth adhering to. The maps are excellent and locate accommodations and dining rapidly for you. The comments for restaurants were normally 'spot on the money', but, restaurants can turn over ownership and management quickly and quality can drop. I experienced this in the case of the Frommer's recommended restaurant 'Maria Teresa' in Albuquerque. This is a property needs to be revisited and possibly dropped from the guide.
Very disappointing (and the PRIMARY reason for the 3 star rating) is the absences of any prices for accommodations or restaurants! This is the first major guide I have ever reviewed that omitted prices! This is a major flaw for this guide.

Lonely Planet Discover California (Full Color Regional Travel Guide) ReviewNew to California or hoping to visit for a day, week, or month? Lonely Planet's latest travel guide to California is a great place to start. Chock full of glossy color photographs, six chapters introduce visitors to the best of the Golden State's urban areas, and a few of its wilder scenic wonders. Each chapter is color coded to help readers navigate to the section they want, and descriptions of eateries, local tourist attractions, hotels and hostels, and local parks are all written in the delightful style that readers of Lonely Planet Guides have come to expect.
Two urban areas, Los Angeles and San Francisco get their own chapters. The other portions of the book cover the rest of the Bay Area and northern California, the Sierra, the Southern California Coast (which does not include LA but does include both Big Sur and San Diego, two remarkably different areas, and of course Wine Country. Each chapter begins with a list of highlights, as does the book itself. Even relatively small communities which merit interest receive some mention here, including Ferndale, just south of Eureka, and hot springs resort Ukiah. The emphasis in this book is on urban visits, but it does include features on parks. Yosemite, of course, gets extensive coverage. But I was impressed by the amount of space devoted to some otherwise little known state parks like Salt Point and Jack London Historic Park.
For the most part, I found the information in the book accurate, but I did find a couple of minor mistakes. The scenes from Star Wars with the Ewoks are described as filmed in two different state parks and actually it was neither of the ones listed. Visitors who remember the movie will want to visit Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park which is not actually mentioned in the book. A description of Lava Beds National Monument is misplaced in the book and appears in the write up on Redwood National Park. Still in all, this is a nice guidebook to the state. I would recommend, however, that readers who want to get out of their cars a bit more should supplement this book with my favorite statewide hiking guide, Moon Handbooks California Hiking. Frommer's Los Angeles 2011 (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewGot this for an upcoming business trip since it's the only digital guide I can find for LA. Moving thru the book is tedious on an iPad and must be a real nightmare on Kindle. The table of contents is linked, but there is no index. My downtown hotel is not listed at all. The contents aren't organized by area, so in any given section you'll find items in downtown or far-flung suburbs in any direction. Lots of history and touristy things, but I expected better and more useful maps. (The print version comes with a fold-out map.) The print edition of the Fodor's Los Angeles 2011 I got from the library is much more useful, but I hate to lug around a big paperback. For maps, you're better off using Google Maps.
As a print book, I'd give it three stars, but it's just too cumbersome in its current digital format. If publishers are going to create digital versions of their print books, they need to find out how people use these books and design digital versions accordingly. I'd recommend downloading the sample first, but there are 17 screens (on iPad) of front matter before you get to any real content so I doubt you'll get a good sense of it.Frommer's Los Angeles 2011 (Frommer's Complete Guides) Overview

Lonely Planet Los Angeles San Diego & Southern California (Regional Travel Guide) ReviewOk, I was raised in Los Angeles area, and I secretly wanted to know what I missed out on since I left for Alaska. Boy, after going through this book, I see I missed so much, better think about returning soon. This book is well laid out with it's new Top 25 Experiences, itineraries that work for short or long time frames, maps that zero in on what to see in a truly large area. The Understanding SoCal is written for anyone, for me who is an X, or someone going for a first visit, well written!
Lonely Planet puts out guides for regular people, meaning I think anyone can get into a guide, learn with they want, and get busy enjoying. And since I got the soft bound version, it's a size that really fits under your arm to be carried, yet, not too big, or I could have opted for digital chapters for my iPhone or iPad device, those work well too. I like maps that keep me where I'm going. I use a rental car gps, but I still want to know on a bigger scale the area, what sights I'm after, and this book was perfect, for they could go to areas - like Palm Springs & the Deserts, Santa Barbara, and give detailed suggestions, San Diego's Balboa Park - home to museums, parks, and nearby places to stay or eat, well done. The book shows what's FREE, what's a Top Choice, the map of that area was right on. I just went there a few months ago, and boy, I wish I'd had this book with me! The Survival Guide aspect, really helps get you into the proper head space, meaning understanding the locals, their mind set.
Because architecture and culture are gaining in popularity in the area, I went through the author's suggested ideas as Must See's, and again, right on the money. So interested in Post Modernism @ the 1997 Getty Center created by Meier or the Getty Villa, a recreation of an Italian villa in Malibu, it talks about it. The coverage of festivals, there are so many, from the awesome Festival of the Swallows or also known as Fiesta de la Golondrinas with website link included. This is a thinking person's guide, when I anticipated a question, it was answered most of the time. I think you'll use this book, not just put it on a shelf, and want to share it with friends also traveling to Southern California.
Want to visit Disneyland, the guide is thorough in it's multi-page planner with many insights that will save the visitor time and money, and cranky kids. Since the authors know it's a popular site, they created a special trip planner. Helpful information for your cell phone, websites of local interest, or even where to spot a celebrity is there. Amazing breadth of information for the reader. Take Santa Monica, maps, suggested places to go the best beaches, eat, walk, bike, bike rentals, stay by area and price, rated by real people, excellent. I can't wait to try so many new places since our last visit, that's what I am attempting to convey, the book really sets the stage for a well planned trip, Lonely Planet pays for the places it reviews, no freebies, no pay for a review stuff, and you get good quality advice you can count on.
