The Unofficial Guide to California with Kids (Unofficial Guides) ReviewThis book has been sooo helpful in planning our first family trip together up the coast! I was absolutely amazed. It gives you ideas for activities that are popular along with the hidden secrets of each area that are usually only known by the locals. Every section includes kid-friendly restaurants and hotels. There is an entire section on the best beaches and parks for children as well. One of the best parts is that at the beginning of each activity description, it gives you a 4-star scale on how each age range (up to seniors) will enjoy the activity. It also gives you ALL the important information on that activity such as how much it costs, whether or not food is available, stroller/wheelchair/locker rentals, how much time you can anticipate spending there and MANY other helpful tips and information.
I also bought the Fodor's California guide, but this has been SO much more informative and helpful for a family with children. Again - a MUST if you are planning a trip with you entire family. The Unofficial Guide to California with Kids (Unofficial Guides) OverviewMore than 4 million copies sold! This series is the only one that offers evaluations based on reader surveys and critiques, compiled by a team of unbiased inspectors.
• Hotels, attractions, and restaurants in all price categories
• Extensive information on shopping, nightlife, and sports
• Easy-to-use, two-color design
• Detailed, 2-color maps

The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland 2007 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewWe were just at Disneyland two weekends ago (spring break for some folks), and spent two days (Fri & Sat) at Disneyland and one day (Sun)at Disney California, this book was FANTASTIC! I read this on our two-day drive down to Anaheim and mapped out our days using the plans available in the book and the program guide I got off Disney's website for the days we would be there... truly we hardly waited in line at all and rode everything we wanted to and saw TONS of shows. We also had so much "extra" time we were able to do some of our favorites (Soarin' and Star Tours for example) twice. We only opted to get FAST PASSES twice (the book explains it, thankfully)because we didn't really need to use them much as we were so easily getting on everything we wanted to go on. Best tip... Get to the park EARLY (hardly anyone did this, it is a crazy fact!) and follow one of the plans, really you don't need to be a drill sergeant about it or anything! We simply lead our family through the parks in the recommended order and had three extremely fun, stress free days! We spent far more time in line for food than for rides or shows. We also stayed across the street from Disneyland at one of the hotels listed in the book, which made it REALLY easy to leave and come back so I must also recommend spending the extra money if you can, it sure was nice for us(Our kids are 8 and 6, fyi.) This book made Disney fun for all of us and hardly ANY fighting or breakdowns, and our 8 yr old has autism... We simply walked around the parks w/little halos over our heads having fun.The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland 2007 (Unofficial Guides) OverviewFrom the publishers of The Unofficial Guide® to Walt Disney World®

Fun with the Family Southern California, 8th: Hundreds of Ideas for Day Trips with the Kids (Fun with the Family Series) ReviewI ordered this book along with Susan Peterson's "Fun and educational places to go with kids and adults in Southern California," hoping to find good family expeditions. Sad to say, "Fun with the Family" suffers terribly from the comparison. It's not that it's bad, it's just that its a very generic, lightweight guidebook that mostly covers places I already knew about. It would be fine for a family who is visiting and wants the highlights of where to go with kids, but I'm looking for interesting weekend expeditions that aren't theme parks or museums. In that case, I'll definitely go with the Peterson book, which is literally four times the size, much more comprehensive, and full of interesting places you won't find in every other Southern California guidebook.Fun with the Family Southern California, 8th: Hundreds of Ideas for Day Trips with the Kids (Fun with the Family Series) OverviewWritten by a parent, this opinionated, personal, and easy-to-use guide has hundreds of ideas to keep the kids entertained for an hour, a day, or a weekend! Fun with the Family Southern California leads the way to historical attractions, children's museums, wildlife habitats, festivals, parks, and much more. Geared towards parents with children between the ages of two and twelve, the guide features interesting facts and sidebars as well as practical tips about traveling with your little ones.

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2007 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewMy family and I just returned from our first trip to Disney World. (It was as blast!) Because it was our first time and we were essentially clueless to the Disney experience, we bought several guides.
The Unofficial Guide by Bob Sehlinger is the one book that I kept returning to over and over again. It's full of such detailed information that even the clueless will be prepared to visit Disney World. However, *because* this book provides an incredible amount of information (such as how to increase your chances for getting into the Hot Seat for MGM's Millionaire game), it could be almost overwhelming for first time visitors to Disney World. (I often got headaches trying to absorb everything!)
In this book, you'll find a Crowd-Level Calendar, Park Traffic Patterns, Clip-Out Touring Plans, and much, much more. This book is updated yearly, so the 2006 version had information on Mickey's PhilharMagic, Expedition Everest, Lights, Motors, Action! Stunt Show, and so on.
Reader feedback is peppered throughout the book, as is the critical and often snarky comments by the author. He provides fascinating "behind the scenes" facts, too. For example, the Imagineers of Mickey's PhilharMagic thought they were being clever when they released Jasmine's deodorant scent when she flies by on the carpet. However, many people were allergic to the scent (the show was often disrupted by sneezing!) so they pulled it from the show. Another amusing behind the scenes: Disney cast members sometimes mess with the Hall of Presidents to reflect current events (e.g., during the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, the Prez had a condom sticking out of his jacket pocket.)
As you can see, the author can be irreverent.
Each attraction gets a thorough overview, as do the restaurants and hotels. For example, a phone number to each restaurant is provided, as is an evaluation of friendliness, service, wine slection, description of setting and atmosphere, menu samples/house specialities, hours of operation, and more. Although a few of the evaluations didn't jive with my experience (for example, the author raves about the Muppet 3D pre-show and movie whereas I thought it was suprisingly boring), there's enough information provided to at least get an idea if a restaurant or attraction would likely appeal. In fact, their star-system rating according to age (grade school vs. young adults vs. those over 30 etc.) is invaluable--and mostly correlated with my experience with the attractions.
I found myself returing to the Unofficial Guide over and over again. In fact, it's the only guide I took WITH me to Disney World! Although I sometimes felt overwhelmed at all the information (it's hard for a newbie to take in all that Disney World offers, especially sight-unseen), I felt PREPARED due in large part to this book.
The author is THOROUGH on his updates--including which attractions have been discontinued and the new ones to be introduced--so I know that the 2007 guide will be just as awesome as the 2006 version! (By the way, that's a picture of Expedition Everest on the 2007 cover--the new rollercoaster in Animal Kingdom that debuted in April of 2006. Here's a tip for ya: it's not HALF as scary--or fun--as people have said. I enjoyed Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom much more! The wait in the heat wasn't worth it for the Expedition ride, IMO, but we did get a pretty funny picture of the family when the Yeti makes an appearance!)
Another great book you may want to get--and, unlike the Unofficial Guide, it has hundreds of color photographs--is the The Complete Guide to Walt Disney World which was just published in April of 2007. A second edition of that book will be published at the end of 2007.The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2007 (Unofficial Guides) Overview"A Tourist's Best Friend!"-Chicago Sun-Times"Indispensable"-The New York TimesCompanion podcast available on Frommers.comFive Great Features and Benefits offered ONLY by The Unofficial Guide®:

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World with Kids (Unofficial Guides) ReviewI have purchased the Unofficial Guide to Wald Disney world once before when we were planning a trip- we didn't get to go, so I purchased the updated one just last month. Along with my order, I decided to add the Unofficial Guide "with kids" because we have 3 small children. I was very disapointed. This could have been a great accompaniment to the regular Unofficial Guide. For starters, in both my situations, the Unoffical Guide was A+ on info, I loved it. The "with kids" seemed to copy and paste bits from that book. But, the confusing part, is that they didn't copy and paste parts that I found to be most useful in the Unoffical Guide. I am confused about why you would need this book- and it lacks some of his personal insight. My guess is that he did not actually do Disney with children and it seems to show. The upside is that "with kids" does give web sites for outside the world hotels that is missing from the Unofficial Guide. I also did find a couple other tidbits like the section on packing and creating uniforms for your family. There is a lot of info on parenting style that is not found in the regular Unofficial guide- but I am still not sure why it is in this one either. I was so excited to see his insight and sad to say he didn't have any. Bottom line IMO is to skip this book, but don't skip the regular Unofficial guide. It is a 6 star book!!The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World with Kids (Unofficial Guides) OverviewThe Top 5 Ways The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World® with Kids Can Help You Have the Perfect Trip:

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2008 (Unofficial Guides) ReviewAlthough I have been a fan of the UG, it appears that the editors are resting on their laurels, and not updating the book every year as they claim. This year's guide includes a disturbing amount of assertions that were not true at the date of publication, and haven't been true for years.
For example:
* The guide claims that all resorts on the monorail have child care centers. The Contemporary Resort does not, and has not since 2004.
* The guide claims that Universe of Energy is an "Exxon pavilion." Exxon has not sponsored the pavilion since 2004.
* The guide claims that guests at the Hard Rock Hotel and Portofino Bay Hotel can obtain early entry to Universal on certain days. Universal discontinued its general early entry program for resort guests years ago.
* The guide claims that there is no bus between the Wilderness Lodge and the Magic Kingdom. Although that was true at one time, it again hasn't been true for years.
* The guide lists Hidden Treasures and Gardens of the World as tours available to the general public at Epcot, even though they were discontinued earlier this year, and the UG website's corrections for the '07 guide in fact notes that the tours have been discontinued.
The index also contains some serious mistakes, such as the claim that Typhoon Lagoon is in Tomorrowland, the hours of operation for "Paradise Island", and a listing for "Lunch with Walt Disney World Animal Programs" which does not actually appear in the body of the guide (having been discontinued).
There's still a lot of good information in the guide, but its becoming less and less trustworthy every year. Wait for the '09 guide and hope that by then the editors get the message that they actually need to do their jobs. The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2008 (Unofficial Guides) OverviewFrom the publishers of The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World

Fodor's Walt Disney World® with Kids 2010: with Universal Orlando and SeaWorld (Travel Guide) ReviewThe 2008 edition of the book was our BIBLE for the trip my husband, our 8-year old son, and I took in October of 2008. I relied on it for everything -- whether to buy the meal plan and at what level, fast pass tips, restaurant suggestions, money-saving tips, age-appropriateness of rides, etc. Before our departure, I sat down with the book and planned our itinerary, which turned out perfectly and saved us from wasting lots of time and money. Upon our return, I e-mailed Ms. Wiley to let her know about our trip and our impressions of rides, our hotel, the shuttle service, etc. She e-mailed back immediately, requesting additional information, which she incorporated into the 2009 edition.
Well worth your money! A must-read before any trip to Disney with children! We are headed to D.C. this year, and I wish Ms. Wiley had written the Fodor's guide to D.C., as well!Fodor's Walt Disney World® with Kids 2010: with Universal Orlando and SeaWorld (Travel Guide) Overview"Must reading for everyone planning to bring their family."—Katie CouricFodor's Walt Disney World® with Kids, 2010 EditionEntering its 20th edition, Fodor's Walt Disney World with Kids delivers the definitive but always-easy-to-access advice of former Disney Magazine contributing editor Kim Wright Wiley, who has logged more than 50 visits to the parks both as a keen-eyed journalist and as a parent. Universal Studios Escape: The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Theme Park Adventure ReviewI found this book very informative and up to date. I have been planning our Florida vacation for some time and found most information a little outdated. What I really wanted was the most current information on the newest theme park experience in Orlando. After reading this book, and taking many notes from each chapter, I feel I am ready to tackle the Escape! Monaghan gives timely information on rides, itineraries, and ways to save precious vacation time, to get the most out of your travel day. It is by far the most up to date of all travel guidebooks I've read. I recommend it for anyone planning a Universal Studio's and Islands of Adventure vacation.Universal Studios Escape: The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Theme Park Adventure OverviewThis first in-depth guide to Universal's vastly expanded, multi-park complex in Orlando, Florida, covers every attraction, shop and eatery in Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, Citiwalk, and the Portofino Bay Resort.

Universal Orlando with Kids, 2nd Edition: Your Ultimate Guide to Orlando's Universal Studios, CityWalk, and Islands of Adventure (Travel with Kids) ReviewI love this book series and consider it to be the most helpful type of book for families traveling with kids under the age of 12. Our family has gone to Disney World many times but just recently began adding trips to Universal to our vacations as well. Our kids are 6 and 10. It helped a lot that the writer prepared us for the fact that Universal rides are louder and scarier than those at Disney world. I think otherwise we may have made some choices that would have flipped out our younger child - the signs in Universal are all cartoon like and very misleading.
The book also helped us to decide to stay in one of the Universal hotels, the Hard Rock hotel. I think I might have skipped this for another type of hotel both becuase I would have thought the Hard Rock wasn't for families or because other hotels in the area were less expensive. But the book convinved me that since we were going in summer we would need the front of the line privledges that people get when they stay at a Universal hotel. Boy were we spoiled! we saw every ride we wanted at both Islands and Universal without waiting at all and rode some things more than once. And the Hard Rock was a great, friendly hotel where the kids were treated very nicely.

Fodor's Walt Disney World with Kids 2011: with Universal Orlando, SeaWorld & Aquatica (Travel Guide) ReviewMy husband, 13 and 5 year old daughters, and I are Disney veterans. We would rather take a Disney vacation, than almost anything else. We love Disney World, we love Disney Cruises, and we have enjoyed Disneyland a number of times. Needless to say, we own a number of Disney travel guides. I have to say, though, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is one of the best that I have seen.
To begin with, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is both well organized and easy to read. A lot of guides have special little hints and tips embedded in their pages, as does FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011. The difference is that with most other guides, the font on the tips and tricks is smaller, cramped, and hard to read. They also make the pages look busy, confused, and jumbled. However, in FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011, these helpful hints are in the same size font as the rest of the text. They flow naturally as you read and are indicated with bold lettering or color. This makes looking things up extremely fast and easy.
The chapters in FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 are also well done and nicely organized. There is a chapter on hotels, one on each main park, one on each minor park (the water parks, Downtown Disney, etc.), one on dining, and several on NON-Disney attractions like the new Harry Potter park. Each chapter has maps and phone numbers, as well as excellent planning aids. Even with all the times we've visited Disney World, I found places and adventures that were either new or we had missed. This really helped us plan our next trip, when we plan to focus on things we've never seen. Additionally, each chapter provides hints on finding Hidden Mickeys, which is one of my family's favorite pastimes. And one of the best features of FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is that each section includes a list of suitable attractions by age and scare factor. With such a wide age span between my kids, I find these pages to be exceedingly helpful.
As I said before, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is one of the best guides for Walt Disney World that I have seen. It can replace about 5 other guides that we use. And traveling lightly is always a plus. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all Disney lovers.
Fodor's Walt Disney World with Kids 2011: with Universal Orlando, SeaWorld & Aquatica (Travel Guide) OverviewInside this new edition is all the information you need to have the family vacation of a lifetime at the Orlando theme parks. Up-to-date and written with the help of more than 500 families, this guide is packed with details on all the attractions at Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld. It's user-friendly, fun, and designed for at-a-glance reference. And it will help you and your family plan the vacation each of you wants.

The Everything Guide to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Greater Orlando: Hotels, Restaurants, Major Attractions, and More (Everything Series) ReviewHaving had quite a lot of previous Walt Disney World experience, I was really disappointed with this book. I will say that the book looks nice and is laid out all right, but the content is awful. The book mentions attractions and shows that were long gone (I mean years) by it's release date in late 1998. One of Disney's major resort hotels isn't even named properly in the book. There is a big difference between Coronado Springs (correct) and Colorado Springs (wrong). Anyone who has even briefly visited the hotel can pick up on the southwest/Mayan/Aztec theme and should realize that the name Colorado Springs wouldn't make sense. I think if an author is claiming to be enough of an expert on something to write a guidebook, the basic facts should be right, which they are not. Virtually any other guidebook will give you better and more relevant information! The Everything Guide to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Greater Orlando: Hotels, Restaurants, Major Attractions, and More (Everything Series) OverviewEvery year, millions of holiday makers travel to Orlando to experience a jam-packed vacation, from early morning golf to late nights on Pleasure Island. Planning the whole trip can seem overwhelming, expensive and daunting. The good news is planning the holiday can be fun! The Everything Guide to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Greater Orlando offers tons of tips and suggestions on how you can save time and money whilst making the most out of your holiday. This completely updated book includes details on: Hotels and restaurants The Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and MGM A completely up-to-date section on Universal Studios and Island of Adventure Sea World Water parks Night time entertainment And all the rest of Orlando's attractions.

Fodor's Walt Disney World® with Kids 2009: with Universal Orlando and SeaWorld (Special-Interest Titles) ReviewThis book does have some helpful tips, but it is not consistent. For example, in the Magic Kingdom section, it may have useful info like good resting places (esp. if you have small children), but not in Epcot section, for example. Or the Magic Kingdom has a section about attractions that are good for preschoolers, and the Hollywood Section does not--you have to search all over the place to find this info. Also the index is INCORRECT. Since the book is sometimes all over the place, I tried to use the index to find a specific topic I needed information on. For example, in the index, it says that the topic "Shopping, delivery for onsite guests" should be on page 42--it is not. The whole index is like that. You would think someone from Fodor's would have proofed/edited the index.Fodor's Walt Disney World® with Kids 2009: with Universal Orlando and SeaWorld (Special-Interest Titles) OverviewEntering its 20th edition, Fodor's Walt Disney World® with Kids delivers the definitive but always-easy-to-access advice of former Disney Magazine contributing editor Kim Wright Wiley, who has logged more than 50 visits to the parks both as a keen-eyed journalist and as a parent. Every family needs her tips and insider knowledge to make the most of a trip to Walt Disney World.Wiley not only rates attractions and rides based on their age-related suitability and "scare" factor, but also incorporates feedback from hundreds of families who, like her, have not-so-tirelessly field tested it all. Inside you'll find: Ø Everything a family needs to choose the right hotel, including driving times to the parks from each propertyØ Full ratings as well as quick-reference charts for the most kid-pleasing rides and restaurants Ø Must-see attraction checklists geared toward young kids as well as preteens and teensØ Time-saving tips, such as how to avoid crowds and lines at the parkØ Insider's secrets and the skinny on "Hidden Mickeys"Ø Cautionary tales and success stories from parents about their park experiencesØ Convenient maps of Walt Disney World and Universal Studios "Must reading for everyone planning to bring their family."–Katie Couric, NBC's Today Show

Beyond Disney: The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando ,SeaWorld and the Best of Central Florida (Unofficial Guides) ReviewBeyond Disney is meant to be used as a second guide when planning a trip to Orlando. They assume that you have purchased The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2010 (Unofficial Guides) or something similar and are using this one for the other theme parks in the area. This is a good idea but there are some problems with it. First, the Universal Parks are already covered in the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World and that material is largely dropped in here with no significant changes. So if you have the Unofficial WDW book, then you don't need to see that again here.
The main value in this book lies in the coverage of Sea World and Busch Gardens. Both are major theme parks and get full coverage here. I found the Busch Gardens information especially helpful. Busch has so many attractions that you can't possibly enjoy every one in a single day and this guide will help you focus on what you might enjoy the most. This is the only book in the Unofficial Guide series where you'll find material on Busch and Sea World, and many of the other publishers ignore those parks completely. If you are interested in attending either park, then I highly recommend Beyond Disney. If you plan to stick to WDW and/or the Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure area then you can safely skip this.Beyond Disney: The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando ,SeaWorld and the Best of Central Florida (Unofficial Guides) OverviewSeven Great Features and Benefits offered ONLY by the Unofficial Guides:

Universal Orlando 2011: The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Theme Park Adventure (Universal Orlando: The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Theme Park Adventure) ReviewI have never been to Universal Orlando, although I have been to Universal Hollywood a couple of times. All of my Orlando trips, of which there have been several, have always been Mouse-oriented. Now that Universal has added The
Wizarding World of Harry Potter to its many themes, my friend and I are planning a trip for early 2011.
However, I couldn't find any book that even mentioned the new Wizarding World. Until this one. I believe it's the first.
I read the book from cover to cover, and the Harry Potter section over and over. There are many typos and grammatical mistakes all the way through the book, and I found that distracting. However, the information in the book was so valuable, the editor in me has to let those mistakes slide.
This is truly a valuable book. I now know how to buy my tickets, approximately how much they're going to cost, how many days we're probably going to need, and how many days it'll take us to see the things we want to see. I even discovered that there's a Men in Black themed ride inside Universal. And that's just the info I was looking for.Universal Orlando 2011: The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Theme Park Adventure (Universal Orlando: The Ultimate Guide to the Ultimate Theme Park Adventure) OverviewUniversal Orlando, the preferred destination for sophisticated adult fun-seekers and thrill-seeking teens, celebrates its 20th anniversary with the hottest new set of attractions in the business: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This new edition not only provides the first printed in-depth reviews of every attraction in Harry's world but adds color photography to better communicate the excitement of Universal's two theme parks, CityWalk entertainment district, and luxury resort hotels.
