James Dean Died Here: The Locations of America's Pop Culture Landmarks ReviewThis book is a lot of fun and one that you might want to take with you if you ever visit Sunset Blvd. (many events happened there!). It lists the locations of cultural landmarks and many entries have a photograph, but not all. Chapters are divided by "History and Tragedy," "Crime, Murder & Assassination," "Celebrity Deaths," "Movies," "Music," "Sports," etc. Landmarks such as the subway grating where Marilyn Monroe posed, Manson Family murder sites, the spot where Zsa Zsa slapped the policeman and Hugh Grant picked up a prostitute are all here. Some entries leave you yearning for more information - for example, it would be interesting to know what became of some of the famous celebrity houses and who lives there now. This information is sometimes noted but often it is not. Photos for ALL of the sites would have been nice too but many do not have photos. Michelin Green Guide California, 7e (Green Guide/Michelin) ReviewI love the Green Guide series because:
1) It's subjective. They tell you what is good, not what is hyped or what the travel agent has a package for. It does not re-hash some handout by the local Chamber of Commerce. Some little-known places get two & three stars because Michelin visited them.
2) It's geared towards road trips. Monsieur Michelin wrote these books to encourage people to wear our their tires. The guides suggest itinararies and put an emphasis on scenic views and scenic routes that Fodors and other guides little heed. It also gives brief road descriptions if the road is dirt or really winding.
3) The green guides give short and interesting background on the history, culture, & economics of the area. These passages are short so they are not boring.
4) The green guides themselves have a lot of maps. Articles are cross-referenced to the map in the Green Guide & regular Michelin road maps.
5) The form factor (shape & size) is easy to carry and stow in a glove box.
6) I mostly agree with their opinions: no stars: so-so; 1 star: Interesting; 2 stars: worth a detour; 3 stars: worth a trip by itself. Frommer's USA (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewWhile on the road (Las Vegas, Arizona and New Mexico) I reviewed three USA guides and my first choice was Fodor's, then Frommer's and finally, Let's Go.
Frommer's practical recommendations are judicious ("We highly recommend that you rent a car when in Las Vegas". YES). The guide's 'What to See & Do' is worth adhering to. The maps are excellent and locate accommodations and dining rapidly for you. The comments for restaurants were normally 'spot on the money', but, restaurants can turn over ownership and management quickly and quality can drop. I experienced this in the case of the Frommer's recommended restaurant 'Maria Teresa' in Albuquerque. This is a property needs to be revisited and possibly dropped from the guide.
Very disappointing (and the PRIMARY reason for the 3 star rating) is the absences of any prices for accommodations or restaurants! This is the first major guide I have ever reviewed that omitted prices! This is a major flaw for this guide.
There are better guides for your money. Consider Fodor's (see my review) or if you are economically challenged consider 'Let's Go USA' (see my review). Conditionally recommendFrommer's USA (Frommer's Complete Guides) OverviewAmerica's #1 bestselling travel series

The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations ReviewThis book combines two of my main interests: travel and classic movies. British journalist Tony Reeves shares these interests to an extreme. He has personally visited and photographed an amazing number of movie locations. There is information provided here that I have not seen anywhere else. The book is organized encyclopedia-style with brief entries alphabetically ordered by film title. Important sites for each film are highlighted in bold type. There are several one or two page colour sections dealing with a topic or movie in greater-than-normal detail. Most movies are given only a few sentences or a paragraph at most; there are tiny black and white picture illustrating the more important listings. There is a very helpful section at the end organizing the movie listings by country. I would have liked to see more, some films could easily have been given pages of information and the most important classics such as Lawrence of Arabia, entire chapters. Watch It Made in the U.S.A.: A Visitor's Guide to the Best Factory Tours and Company Museums ReviewI bought both this book and "Inside America" (theother book that Amazon lists...I reviewed that too..don't bother withit!). This book is really nice. It was so well thought out: 1. There are color pictures of what you would see in some of the factories. 2. It tells you whether you actually get to TOUR the factory or whether you will be looking through a window or a watching a video. 3. Tells whether you get freebies. 4. At first I was disappointed because there were so few entries for CT and NJ but when I read the beginning of the book they explained EXACTLY the reason for some states having so few and how they picked the tours for the book. 5. Each tour has like 4-5 paragraphs dedicated to describing it. 6. Tells cost. 7. Tells you anything "special" you might need to know like: the CRAYOLA tour in PA is first come first serve so you might get there and not be allowed in (I personally know of 5 people this happened to... so I specifically checked to see if this would be mentioned). 8. This was geared towards the average person...and specifically families.
I'm crazy when it comes to details and I was thrilled that these people were too. I was very impressed when things would be in parenthesis saying they double checked all information but that you should still call ahead. Lonely Planet Singapore Encounter ReviewMy husband and I took a week long trip to Singapore. When we landed, we realized that we had no idea where to go and what to see, all we knew was that Singapore was supposed to have great food. We were staying near Orchard Road and stopped by the Borders Books, and after looking over the extensive travel book section decided upon this one for it's compact size. We then began exploring each neighborhood one at a time while we ate our way through the city! Every restaurant recommendation did NOT disappoint! We literally ate 4-5 meals a day and used this book to guide us to all the Hawker Stalls that sell AMAZING food! I've bought a Lonely Planet City Guide, which is a little more extensive; however, we have found the Encounter series a lot more user-friendly as all information (eating, shopping, sites) are broken up by neighborhood instead of by category. The only downside is that a few of the timings were off -- we ended up going to a restaurant that wasn't open although the book said it would be -- but from my experience that's normal for travel guide books. Beyond Disney: The Unofficial Guide to Universal, SeaWorld, and the Best of Central Florida, 2nd edition ReviewI have been a fan of Bob Sehlinger's "Unofficial" guide to Walt Disney World since the early 1990s. I have made numerous trips to the Disney resort, and have saved a great deal of time and money using his book "The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World".
Much like his WDW book, this guide offers honest rankings of activities such as shows, attractions, and dining for parks including Busch Gardens, Cypress Gardens, Gatorland, Kennedy Space Center, Sea World, Universal Studios and Universal's Island of Adventure. As a water park fan I appreciate the detailed comparison and ratings of the different water parks, including Disney's. It also has a section discussing night life and dinner theaters, but doesn't cover or compare Downtown Disney or Cirque Du Solie.
While the brutally honest ratings are great in this book, I am greatly disappointed that their traffic gurus didn't write up touring plans for which their WDW are famous. There is plenty of detailed information that will allow you to create "battle plans" based on age, type of ride, and attraction popularity.
It is a small book, easily carried in a fanny pack and is an excellent companion with their "Mini Mickey" book for touring, and "The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World" for planning. It's all-too familiar in the case of Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. In fact, it's simply a verbatim extract of the "Walt Disney World" text. Worse yet, it omits one of the best features of the Disney book: the touring plans.
If you're planning a trip to Universal Studios, and/or Islands of Adventure, stick with Sehlinger's Disney book: it contains more and better coverage. Sea World receives better coverage here. Fodor's Walt Disney World® 2008: with Universal Orlando and SeaWorld (Fodor's Gold Guides) ReviewAlthough I've been to Disney with my family several times, I pick up a guide book every year to brush up on an outside opinion on places we haven't eaten, what construction is going on, etc. I had picked up the 2003 Fodor's Walt Disney World for Couples book and absolutely loved it. When they discontinued the series, I picked up this year's 2008 Guide book. Having been to Disney regularly, I was disappointed at the write-ups. While they do at least mention all the major rides and attractions, and offer some helpful tips, the write-ups in this edition aren't nearly as detailed as the other title I'd bought. I felt cheated of not only better writing, but a sense of humor and a lot of the little details their previous series offered. The input from the public that they published was mainly from two people, hardly a wide sampling.

Universal Orlando with Kids, 2nd Edition: Your Ultimate Guide to Orlando's Universal Studios, CityWalk, and Islands of Adventure (Travel with Kids) ReviewI love this book series and consider it to be the most helpful type of book for families traveling with kids under the age of 12. Our family has gone to Disney World many times but just recently began adding trips to Universal to our vacations as well. Our kids are 6 and 10. It helped a lot that the writer prepared us for the fact that Universal rides are louder and scarier than those at Disney world. I think otherwise we may have made some choices that would have flipped out our younger child - the signs in Universal are all cartoon like and very misleading.
The book also helped us to decide to stay in one of the Universal hotels, the Hard Rock hotel. I think I might have skipped this for another type of hotel both becuase I would have thought the Hard Rock wasn't for families or because other hotels in the area were less expensive. But the book convinved me that since we were going in summer we would need the front of the line privledges that people get when they stay at a Universal hotel. Boy were we spoiled! we saw every ride we wanted at both Islands and Universal without waiting at all and rode some things more than once. And the Hard Rock was a great, friendly hotel where the kids were treated very nicely.

I will say that the book looks nice and is laid out all right, but the content is awful. The book mentions attractions and shows that were long gone (I mean years) by it's release date in late 1998. One of Disney's major resort hotels isn't even named properly in the book. There is a big difference between Coronado Springs (correct) and Colorado Springs (wrong). Anyone who has even briefly visited the hotel can pick up on the southwest/Mayan/Aztec theme and should realize that the name Colorado Springs wouldn't make sense. I think if an author is claiming to be enough of an expert on something to write a guidebook, the basic facts should be right, which they are not. All of my Orlando trips, of which there have been several, have always been Mouse-oriented. Now that Universal has added The
Wizarding World of Harry Potter to its many themes, my friend and I are planning a trip for early 2011.
However, I couldn't find any book that even mentioned the new Wizarding World. Until this one. I believe it's the first.
I read the book from cover to cover, and the Harry Potter section over and over. There are many typos and grammatical mistakes all the way through the book, and I found that distracting. However, the information in the book was so valuable, the editor in me has to let those mistakes slide.
This is truly a valuable book. I now know how to buy my tickets, approximately how much they're going to cost, how many days we're probably going to need, and how many days it'll take us to see the things we want to see. I even discovered that there's a Men in Black themed ride inside Universal.
