Altman on Altman ReviewWhen I thought of Robert Altman before reading this book, I typically thought of him as a "Seventies" director who had had a few hits in recent years.
This book shows how limited that view of Altman was. It is a wide-ranging interview that covers Altman's career from his stint as an extra in "Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (!!!) to directing "The Company." He talks about his involvement with the classic TV series "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Combat" as well as directing Broadway plays and a couple operas.
And, of course, he talks about his films, the classics that everyone remembers and those that got buried by the critics. From it all, Altman emerges as a fascinating character who pursued his own vision and took advantage of changes in the media to be relatively successful.
Essential reading for anyone interested in recent American film.Altman on Altman OverviewAn exciting collection of original interviews with the infamously outspoken director of Short Cuts. From Nashville to The Player to Gosford Park, Robert Altman's irreverent, iconoclastic style has palpably altered the landscape of American cinema. Cited as an influence by such envelope-pushing directors as Spike Jonze and P. T. Anderson, Altman has created a genre all his own, notable for its improvised, overlapping dialogue and creative cinematography. One of the key moviemakers of the 1970s--commonly considered the heyday of American film--Altman's irrepressible combination of unorthodox vision and style is most clearly evidenced in the fourteen movies he released across that decade. By fine-tuning his talent in a diverse array of genres, including westerns, thrillers, and loopy, absurdist comedies--all subtly altered to fit his signature métier--he cemented his place as one of our most esteemed directors. In these conversations with David Thompson, Altman reflects on his start in industrial filmmaking, as well as his tenure in television directing Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Bonanza, and his big break in feature films as the director of the enormously popular M*A*S*H, a project for which he was the last possible resort behind fourteen other directors. The resulting portrait reveals a quixotic man whose films continue to delight and challenge audiences, both in the United States and beyond.

The Psychotronic Video Guide To Film ReviewI'll freely admit my admiration for Michael Weldon's work, this book, his previous, and his magazine. Even when I disagree with his assessment, he's always honest and straight-forward.
I read some other reviews complaining about the content, or lack thereof, in this book. I think there's a misundserstanding as to what this is. It is a continuation of Michael's previous book, the Psychotronic Encylcopedia. There may be references in the reviews to movies not listed here, but that's because those movies are listed in the Encyclopedia. The two books have very little common content.
I also read a complaint about inclusion of some mainstream pictures such as Basic Instinct. In defense, I would say that Michael's content covers exploitation films of all genres and budget levels, whether made for $26,000 or $26,000,000.
I also like Michael's editorial inserts in this volume, such as his favorite movies of each decade.
Both books are essential, though admittedly his first covers most of the classics. This volume, thankfully, is not only more up-to-date, but stretches back into the silent era as well.
I say...buy them both. The Psychotronic Video Guide To Film Overview

Lynch on Lynch, Revised Edition ReviewThis is a great book written by Chris Rodley that is basically a series of interviews with living legend David Lynch. If you're not into Lynch or his movies at all, I doubt you'll find anything insightful in here but if you appreciate the man at all, this is definitely a must read. It covers a lot of ground on his upbringing, film and art projects. What makes this book such a good read is that Rodley asks great questions to which Lynch answers in a very entertaining fashion. Reading this is probably the closest thing to actually speaking to him and he has an incredible, warm personality. While he doesn't give up his secrets too readily, he does share personal opinions on art in general (film, painting, photography, etc.) and what makes art powerful. He offers invaluable insight on the filmmaking process and some details on what it took to get his films made. He talks about his successes and debacles with equal parts candidness as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates Lynch and anyone who digs offbeat filmmakers.
(NOTE: Make sure that if you pick this up, you get the edition that has been revised and updated to include "Mulholland Drive")
Lynch on Lynch, Revised Edition OverviewDavid Lynch erupted onto the cinema landscape in 1977 with Eraserhead, establishing himself as one of the most original and imaginative directors at work in contemporary cinema. Over the course of his career, he has remained true to a vision of the innocent lost in darkness and confusion, balancing hallucination and surrealism with a sense of Americana that is as pure and simple as his compelling storylines. In this volume, Lynch speaks openly about his films as well as about his lifelong commitment to painting, his work in photography, his television projects, and his musical collaborations with Angelo Badalamenti.

L.A. Bizarro: The All-New Insider's Guide to the Obscure, the Absurd, and the Perverse in Los Angeles ReviewYears ago, I read the first L.A. Bizarro. LOL - admittedly, I was too young and too afraid to visit some of the places listed in the book, so I read it with a sort of voyeuristic wistfulness.
Now, Older (not that much!) and braver, I was thrilled to find the new, updated L.A. Bizarro.
This isn't your Grandma's guidebook!
The authors of L.A. Bizarro bring L.A. natives and tourists alike a peephole view into the kitschy, deviant and bizarre L.A. The L.A. you only dream about.
The book is full of information on some of the weirdest and most interesting places in L.A. From stores where you can buy hardcore S&M Furniture, to dive bars, to haunted hotels and nude beaches, L.A. Bizarro brings them all to you.
A quick warning: some of the entries and photos are definitely not appropriate for kids. The book is strictly adults only, but it's a great deal of fun!L.A. Bizarro: The All-New Insider's Guide to the Obscure, the Absurd, and the Perverse in Los Angeles OverviewThe cult classic is back! More than 10 years after pioneering the gonzo guidebook genre, this all-new edition of the beloved #1 best-selling guide to bad taste L.A. has been fully revised. Packed with 75% new material, L.A. Frommer's Los Angeles 2011 (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewGot this for an upcoming business trip since it's the only digital guide I can find for LA. Moving thru the book is tedious on an iPad and must be a real nightmare on Kindle. The table of contents is linked, but there is no index. My downtown hotel is not listed at all. The contents aren't organized by area, so in any given section you'll find items in downtown or far-flung suburbs in any direction. Lots of history and touristy things, but I expected better and more useful maps. (The print version comes with a fold-out map.) The print edition of the Fodor's Los Angeles 2011 I got from the library is much more useful, but I hate to lug around a big paperback. For maps, you're better off using Google Maps.
As a print book, I'd give it three stars, but it's just too cumbersome in its current digital format. If publishers are going to create digital versions of their print books, they need to find out how people use these books and design digital versions accordingly. I'd recommend downloading the sample first, but there are 17 screens (on iPad) of front matter before you get to any real content so I doubt you'll get a good sense of it.Frommer's Los Angeles 2011 (Frommer's Complete Guides) Overview
