Made You Laugh: The Funniest Moments in Comedy ReviewThe sub-title says a lot. This is a collection of stories about comedy through the years. The list is too long to repeat here, but if it was funny: on stage, on radio, on television or in the movies, it's probably here.
It's written that you don't need to sit down and go from beginning to end. You flip through and you find Richard Pryor, or Bill Murray, or here's the story of the Smothers Brothers TV show getting cancelled because of political sensitivities, immediately to be followed by Laugh In.
To top it off, there's a CD, worth the price of the book by itself there's a DVD. On it, Carl and Rob Reiner present a compilation of clips from Charlie Chaplin to Jerry Lewis to Jim Carrey.
This is a very good, very entertaining book. This is not a funny book. It's a book about being funny. It should have sold for about half of that.Jungleland (Images of America) (Images of America Series) OverviewIn 1926, animal attendant Louis Goebel bought five lots at $10 apiece as a home for his seven African lions along old Ventura Boulevard in a remote, sparsely populated portion of Ventura County just over the Los Angeles County line--where the city of Thousand Oaks eventually grew. Not surprisingly, the big predators became a roadside attraction. By 1929, Goebel added exotic birds and other animals. Premier woman tiger trainer Mabel Stark arrived as Goebel's Lion Farm accrued regional fame, and Capt. Frank Phillips trained Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's famous Leo the Lion after the name changed to World Jungle Compound. The park maintained Hollywood ties, renting animals and hosting scenes for dozens of movies and television shows. Jungleland became the zoo's lasting moniker after name and ownership changes. The enthusiastic opening of Disneyland in 1955 on the other side of Los Angeles inspired big plans for the Ventura County attraction, including a monorail. These plans fizzled, however, and Goebel resumed ownership in 1961. The park closed eight years later, and 1,800 animals were sold at auction. After four decades, the distinctive Conejo Valley lion roars were silenced.

Hollywood Under Siege: Martin Scorsese, the Religious Right, and the Culture Wars ReviewIt is strange to read of the ancient Christological heresies like Arianism which held that somehow Jesus was more than mortal, but less than God; or Docetism, which held that Jesus's humanity was a mere illusion. They were not just controversies, they were often bloody, and we are lucky to be beyond such hairsplitting now. Except that we are not beyond them, really. There is a good deal of writing about how Jesus was tempted, and of course the Gospels describe that he indeed was. Naturally, there had to be some risk that he might give in, or it wasn't really a temptation. There are passages that show that he was tempted in every way, which includes being sexually tempted; but it was too much for many Christians that his sexual temptation was described in the 1951 novel _The Last Temptation of Christ_ by Nikos Kazantzakis, and it was worse when it was depicted in Martin Scorsese's movie in 1988. In _Hollywood Under Siege: Martin Scorsese, the Religious Right, and the Culture Wars_ (The University Press of Kentucky), Thomas R. Lindlof, a professor in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky, has given a detailed history of an important event in popular culture, religious thinking, and First Amendment philosophy. It was a real firestorm at the time, and it is surprising how naïve the filmmakers were about how much trouble the film might cause. The week the movie opened, Paul Schrader who wrote the initial screenplay found the director Martin Scorsese fretting over the protests and controversy. Schrader pointed out that Scorsese had intended to make a controversial film and had succeeded. "I know, I know," came the reply, "but I didn't think it would be _this_ controversial."
Scorsese had wanted to do a Jesus picture for years, and when he read Kazantzakis's novel, he knew he wanted to make a film of it. The Hollywood brass sitting around the table at a planning session probably could not have understood his answer when they asked why he wanted to make this particular picture: "Because I want to get to know Christ better," came the utterly serious answer. It proved to be a difficult way to attain such knowledge. Lindlof details the problems in gaining rights to the novel, in coming up with draft scripts, and in dealing with the reactions of those who wanted Jesus shown straight from the Gospels only. Scorsese always said he was filming a novel, not the Bible, but even the idea of doing so stirred protest long before filming began. The movie was eventually taken up by Universal Studios, and Lindlof describes the filming in Morocco, including how Scorsese would provide the cast with articles from theology journals to have them consider their roles in depth. The biggest problem the protesters had was that they made the movie more popular. There were serious and dangerous physical assaults, with a gasoline bomb found on one theater's roof or an evangelical Christian ramming a bus through another theater's lobby. More often there were letters of death threats against members of the studio. In one town after another, though, the most visible manifestation of the protests were the pickets outside theaters, and the advanced teams sent from the studios were able to manipulate them so that they would make good photos for the newspapers. Lindlof doesn't mention it, but in Dayton, theater manager Larry Smith kept the protesters outside the Neon Movies warm and well fed with coffee and doughnuts, a small investment to keep up the free publicity.
The film did fairly well financially, and Scorsese went on to direct movies like _Goodfellas_ and _Casino_, which for all their violence, repeated his themes of individuals forced to make moral choices. Lindlof has given us a parable of a simpler time, when the phrase "culture war" was just beginning to be used. Scorsese took into the battle sincerity and intelligence, and made a thoughtful and meaningful film (and, one assumes, one that let him know Christ better). Lindlof's account is detailed and even exciting. Different aspects of the battle between the religious right and Hollywood are still in play, but this episode from twenty years ago marked an important beginning.

For the first time in history, a studio took responsibility for protecting theaters and scrambled to recruit a "field crisis team" to guide The Last Temptation of Christ through its contentious American openings. Overseas, the film faced widespread censorship actions, with thirteen countries eventually banning the film. The response in Europe turned violent when opposition groups sacked theaters in France and Greece and caused injuries to dozens of moviegoers. Twenty years later, author Thomas R. Lindlof offers a comprehensive account of how this provocative film came to be made and how Universal Pictures and its parent company MCA became targets of the most intense, unremitting attacks ever mounted against a media company. The film faced early and determined opposition from elements of the religious Right when it was being developed at Paramount during the last year the studio was run by the celebrated troika of Barry Diller, Michael Eisner, and Jeffrey Katzenberg. By the mid-1980s, Scorsese's film was widely regarded as unmakeable -- a political stick of dynamite that no one dared touch. Through the joint efforts of two of the era's most influential executives, CAA president Michael Ovitz and Universal Pictures chairman Thomas P. Pollock, this improbable project found its way into production. The making of The Last Temptation of Christ caught evangelical Christians at a moment when they were suffering a crisis of confidence in their leadership. The religious right seized on the film as a way to rehabilitate its image and to mobilize ordinary citizens to attack liberalism in art and culture. The ensuing controversy over the film's alleged blasphemy escalated into a full-scale war fought out very openly in the media. Universal/MCA faced unprecedented calls for boycotts of its business interests, anti-Semitic rhetoric and death threats were directed at MCA chairman Lew Wasserman and other MCA executives, and the industry faced the specter of violence at theaters. Hollywood Under Siege draws upon interviews with many of the key figures -- Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader, Michael Ovitz, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Jack Valenti, Thomas P. Pollock, and Willem Dafoe -- to explore the trajectory of the film from its conception to the subsequent epic controversy and beyond. Lindlof offers a fascinating dissection of a critical episode in the embryonic culture wars, illuminating the explosive effects of the clash between the interests of the media industry and the forces of social conservatism.

Script Partners: What Makes Film and TV Writing Teams Work ReviewIn the interest of full disclosure, I should say first that Matt Stevens and I are long-time friends. That noted, I can honestly say that "Screen Partners: What Makes Film and TV Writing Teams Work" is one of the most useful and entertaining books on writing that I've ever read, and I've read quite a few. By focusing on how screenwriting teams operate, Johnson and Stevens provide not only a view into the inner workings of the collaborative artistic relationship, but also an original, engaging and illuminating look at the craft of screenwriting. Any working or would-be screenwriting team can certainly benefit by reading (and re-reading) this text, while even the most dedicated "go it alone" soloist may be inspired to keep his/her eyes open for the right writing partner after reading this book.
Writing in a personable and humorous style, Johnson and Stevens generously share what they've learned about collaboration during the course of their own artistic partnership, and they extensively quote other working writers and writing teams that they interviewed for the book. Occasionally, scenes or snippets from finished scripts are included to further illuminate certain points.
The book follows a clear, straightforward structure as Johnson and Stevens explore collaborative screenwriting from every angle. First, they focus the hows and whys, with three chapters that identify the various mental and creative benefits of collaboration, explain how writers go about finding appropriate partners, and explore how teams decide when, where and how to get the actual writing done. The middle section of the book focuses on the work itself, with four chapters dedicated to choice of project, character development, story development and structure, and drafting of the script. The last two chapters address a range of creative and business issues that every writing team should seriously consider up-front, from how to handle disagreements to how to split the money to how to part if the collaboration ends. Additional material includes useful checklists of "Screen Partner Points" that follow each chapter as well as the to-be-expected Introduction, Afterword, Filmography, etc.

Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams: The Story of Black Hollywood ReviewI feel like I had never really seen a Hollywood picture before, now that I have read Donald Bogle's marvelous study of black life in Hollywood on and off screen. The other day for example I saw a inconsequential Fox comedy of the 1950s written by Nunnally Johnson, Oh Men, Oh Women, and in it a spoiled white heiress played by Barbara Rush refuses to exit a New York cab until the driver finds her the correct change. For the moment,the focus of the film is on the hassled driver, who has to contend with Miss Rush's airs, and also with the honks and screams of a dzoen other cabs jammed up behind him. Finally he lets her out for free and he absorbs the cost of his mistake. I didn't recognize the actor who played (briefly) the cabbie, then I waited for the credits. It was Joel Fluellen. A name which would have meant nothing to me, if I hadn't just finished reading Bogle. Joel Fluellen! The forgotten man of the movies dead, alas, too soon, and way before he could reveal his true sexuality.
This performance, brief as it was, is totally calibrated and brings an energy into a movie which sadly needs some! In a way this scene might be an allegory for Bogle's thesis, which is that, even if they were given insulting little to do, African American actors did it stunningly well and the shame of it is how very few of them managed to catch a break all the way to stardom. A few of them did: Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Sidney Poitier. Because the book basically breaks off circa 1960, we don't get to hear later success stories such as Will Smith or Denzel Washington. This book is all about forebears.
A few nights later I watched a picture of an earlier vintage, CRASH DIVE with Tyrone Power. Oddly for its time, the movie gives a fair amount of screen time to a black actor calkled Ben Carter. If you read BBBD, you will find out Carter's whole story, the way he parlayed his limited experience as a theatrical agent into representing some of Hollywood's biggest black names--and often enough stealing their parts from them, because he'd nab the script and secure the part first if he thought it worth his time!
If you've got one film book to read this year make it Donald Bogle. You'll find it an amazing intervention into a quickly disappearing history.Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams: The Story of Black Hollywood Overview

LFO: Lyte Funkie Ones ReviewOkay, let me start off by saying that they did a good job of filling new fans in on LFO's history... it's got a lot of info on how they started and their beginnings with Brizz. But I could've written a more accurate book! The writers obviously got 99% of their info from magazine articles and websites, without verifying if the info was accurate. And we all know that mags & websites don't always have the correct information! They wrote that Rich and Brizz met Brad at a party in NYC. Now, that's what I had thought too because that's what their old bio said. But then in recent interviews and stuff, they said that Rich knocked on Lou's door and Brad answered it and that's how they met. Well, I asked Brad about how they REALLY met and it was at Lou's house, not at a party in NYC! The other thing they were wrong about was LFO first US performance... they said it was at the Orlando Bands Together show on March 15, 1998. That's not right. Because I saw them perform for the first time on February 21, 1998 when they opened up for BSB at the House of Blues in Orlando! Other than that, the book is good and full of info for relatively new fans. (I've been a fan for 2 years, so it was mostly old news to me!) I don't want it to sound like the book isn't good though... it is very informative!
