Sound for Film and Television, Second Edition ReviewHaving read almost every book out on sound for film and television, from the most contemporary to the classics, it was a surprise to find both the theoretical/aesthetic use of sound and technical sound information (from one who really knows, the author, creator of the THX sound system.) The innovative thinking Homan put into the design of the THX system has been equally applied to this book. The book gives countless examples of both classic and contemporary films demonstrating practical application of sound theories. The information in the book has been of great value to me in my film work and to several students I know from USC School of Cinema-TV and its Summer Production Workshops. I also found the CD in the back of the book extremely helpful in actually "hearing" principles discussed in the book, another innovation from the author.Sound for Film and Television, Second Edition OverviewSound for Film and Television, Second Edition provides a thorough introduction to the fascinating field of recording, editing, mixing, and exhibiting film and television sound. It strikes a fine balance between aesthetic and technical content, combining theory and practice to approach sound as both an art and a science, as no other text has before. This edition includes new information on digital techniques as they have arisen in the industry, and expanded coverage of sound editing and design.Written by one of Hollywood's leading sound experts, Sound for Film and Television, Second Edition provides a solid grounding in all aspects of the sound process. Basic principles are presented with illustrations demonstrating how they affect the day-to-day activities on a film or television set, in the editing room, and in the mix room.
*The only text to present sound design as both an art and a science*Bridges the gap between production books and design engineering books

Creating Music and Sound for Games ReviewThe really, really, basic 123's of creating music and sound. It might be helpful for someone who knows very little about the process of creating sound or music for anything.
The 'for games' part of the title is very limited. The most useful sections were the early and later parts, which were the only things in the book that didn't come off as product/equipment overview. The biggest problem, even if you do find the information useful, is that the book will likely be outdated rather quickly.
I recommend the other video game books instead. The Fatman book and the one by Alexander Brandon are particularly good, as is the one by Aaron Marks. Short of the equipment overview, most of the information in this book can be found in those.
For more education, I'd recommend the Gamasutra website.Creating Music and Sound for Games OverviewGet ready to step into the mysterious world of the video game sound designer and composer. Creating Music and Sound for Games examines the responsibilities associated with each of these roles and offers tips and insight for breaking into the business. With focused sections for each of these important roles, this book offers an insider's look into how the sound designer and compositor fit into the game production team and how these roles interact with one another. You'll cover the essential tools of the trade and will examine sound design and compositional tips that can save you time and make you more efficient.

The Complete Guide to Game Audio, Second Edition: For Composers, Musicians, Sound Designers, Game Developers (Gama Network Series) ReviewThis book was not for me. I'm a student for Game and Simulation Programming looking for good a good introduction to the basics of Game Audio. The author has targeted this book directly at audio engineers who already have a good head start and want to market themselves to game developers as contractors. The majority of the material is about making money, and in fact it seems the author can not pass a topic without some reference to getting paid. As I read through most of the book, the material that I would have found useful was lost in a mess of anecdotes and rambling about the plights that composers have.
I rated it 2 stars because the writing was long winded, difficult to read, repetitious, incomplete, and poorly organized. This was not what I was expecting from a "complete guide".The Complete Guide to Game Audio, Second Edition: For Composers, Musicians, Sound Designers, Game Developers (Gama Network Series) OverviewTurn your musical passion into a profitable career with this exhaustive, indispensable resource for game audio. Sound for Film and Television, Third Edition ReviewSound is the most neglected part of filmmaking, and yet it is so very important for effectively conveying the narrative structure in any motion picture. "Sound for Film and Television" (Third Edition) is a very technical book. In film school, I have taken college-level courses for audio and sound and this is a very professional level book that is more technical than any of our current textbooks. It is definitely on the level of what you would expect from someone who works for THX / Lucasfilm. There are really not a great many illustrations in this book. The reader will have to have at least a little basic knowledge on how sound works, and if you are looking for a weekend filmmaker's how-to type of manual for doing things on the cheap, this book is not it.
All of this having been said, as in the introdction, depending on who you are and why you are studying the book, there are various approaches to the text. If you have to be on the set before sunrise the next morning, a thorough study of chapter 4, Capturing Sound, can get you to a place where you are at least reasonably competent. Subjects such as psychoacoustics and getting the most effect out of sound in film and television are also covered early on in the book. The chapter on editing is quite extensive and covers basic micing of both film and television sets for sitcoms, dramas, snd includes pre-mix operations for sound editors as well as a very good section on documentary and reality production. The eleven commandments of film sound are quite enlightening and give a really good insight as to the dos and don'ts. Keeping the sound in synch with the picture is the surest way to tip off the audience that they are dealing with amateur filmmakers. Silence is rarely found in the natural world and should not be found in film. It is the balance of dialogue, music and effects is of paramount importance and although these elements may shift in importance on the screen, it is the effective film editor that can bring out the narrative in the editing process. Sound for Film and Television covers the most effective ways to make all the pieces work together in the final sound edit. Tomlinson Holman adroitly shows these things in depth and does his best to explain them and eliminate confusion for the reader.
There is an included DVD can be played on stereo or surround sound systems. There are setups snd tests for signal present checks, demonstration of full or dramtic fall of and direct sound, boinks, 400Hz tone with a variety of waveforms such as square or triangle waves. Radiation patterns of the voice shown by multiple recordings of simultaneous angles.
Again, this book is very helpful and it is very succinct, but you need to have a strong focus on the importance of good audio engineering and sound editing. You definitely have to have your mind on what you are reading and possibly with your hands on the equipment itself to get the most out of the book.Sound for Film and Television, Third Edition Overview
Sound for Film and Television, Third Edition provides a thorough introduction to the fascinating field of recording, editing, mixing, and exhibiting film and television sound. The Sound Effects Bible: How to Create and Record Hollywood Style Sound Effects Review[...]
Review by: Sable Jak
This is not a book to simply glance through and then put on your shelf and pull out now and then. If you're involved in sound at all, I doubt you could do that. This is a book to carry with you in the field, have next to your computer, in your editing suite and taped to your cereal box so you can read it while you have breakfast.
There is so much information in this thing I don't even know where to begin, so I'll tell you a little set-up information first:
I recorded my own audio drama serial last year (2008) and I wish I'd had this before I started. It sure would have helped stop a lot of stumbling and fumbling around. At the same time, it's more than a little nice now and then to find a piece of information in it that lets me know I did something right... on occasion.
Viers knows his business. He's worked in film, radio, television and video games for years. According to his bio he's one of the world's largest independent providers of sound effects, with over 150,000 sounds and 150 sound libraries. He's also created sound libraries for large companies.
He's taken all that experience and crammed it into 326 fully-loaded pages. He starts out by explaining what sound effects are, from natural to manufactured to designed. Why start with such a basic? Because he's all about understanding what you're doing. So, if the chapter on the science of sound may seem like it's reiterating an old science class, remember; who among us can't benefit from a refresher course?
Not being mechanically/technically inclined I appreciated his information on microphones and their accessories, and even how to put together a portable recording package. In addition to helping you build your own Foley stage (complete with pictures, yippee) he covers studio equipment, recording in the field, recording Foley and working with a database. There's so much information it's hard to absorb it all. I'd like to say it's best taken in small increments, and for someone who works best by doing, it is, but at the same time, there's so much here you want to keep reading in case the next page contains something vital to your current project. However, keep in mind the book is laid out so you can quick reference specific needs without having to wade through unrelated information.
I have to say, some of the hard core technical information is a little hard for me to understand, even though it's written very clearly. But the more I read, the more I work on projects and the more I use this book, the more I will, and do, understand. I say this because to me it seems that Viers knows that having a good reference guide at hand is always a help, no matter how much you do or don't know.
In short, I highly recommend this book.
