It doesn't go into a lot of details about things teens don't care about or affect (their father and I chose the hotel, for example) but has plenty of fun little trivia and good information about the rides. We've used Kim Wright Wiley's guide Walt Disney World With Kids on several previous trips and find it really helpful. I thought the difficult economic issues were avoided as well as the analogy of the corporation to a Roman General and his army. Part Three was the best on Class and Heirarchies with all three authors contributing works in the section providing a superb and vitally important introduction to cultural theory and cultural programming.

The Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World Resort, 3rd: How to Get the Most Out of the Best Disney Has to Offer ReviewWhereas most WDW guide books emphasize ways to make an expensive vacation (and let's be honest, ALL WDW vacations are expensive) more afordable, this book does just the opposite by highlighting all of the most expensive options available. Of course this is exactly what it claims to do, and it succeeds wonderfully. Only deluxe-grade resorts are discussed and restaurant reviews focus primarily on WDW's "signature" establishments (although others are discussed). The details provided, however, are exquisite. In a "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" sort of way, you can learn about the contents of the $2000/night luxury suites, chartered cruises, elegant spas, 13 course chefs' table meals, limo services, etc. Although many options for children are discussed (including $150 tea parties), the unspoken theme to this book seems to be how affluent adults can turn a "theme park vacation" into a high-end "resort vacation" that also happens to have theme parks (perhaps you can let your Nanny hustle the kids around the parks while you luxuriate in the spas and drink $150 bottles of wine). Although I am NOT the kind of person who looks for the over-the-top resort features, I DO enjoy higher-end dining, which was my primary reason for reading this book. I was not disappointed. All of the best restaurants in the parks, the resorts, and in nearby Orlando (including Universal) are reviewed to include atmoshpere, quality, price range, and sample menu items. This is not to say that the parks are not discussed. All of the "best" attractions at each park are discussed, and advice for how to maximize use of the sometimes overwhelming WDW tranportation system are very well explained. Although not as extensive as in some other books, sample "touring plans" are given to help you maximize the time you spend in the parks (inbetween your champagne brunches and garden tours). The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I bought it as a book on WDW, and quite a lot of time is spent on Universal, Sea World, Disney Cruises, and other non-Disney locations. If you have never been to WDW before I would recommend this as a "second guide" to have in addition to the various more complete guides on the Market (The "Unofficial Guide" being the most comprehensive), but if you are already somewhat familiar with WDW, this is an excellent guide if you are interested in "stepping up" your next visit or if you are planning a special event (e.g. birthday, anniversary, reunion, etc.)The Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World Resort, 3rd: How to Get the Most Out of the Best Disney Has to Offer OverviewDiscover the sophisticated side of Disney "Luxury means different things to different travelers-an elegant guest suite, a hotel atrium full of exotic blooms, a romantic dinner with fireworks as a backdrop. You spend way too much time on various Disney sites and blogs and you've got a vast knowledge of all things WDW. Your friends think you're a little nuts, but not too nuts to solicit advice from regarding their upcoming trip. You know all the details, right? The Nautilus carved on Pooh's tree, Mr. Toad handing over the deed; that stuff is just the beginning. No matter how many times you've been to WDW and how many secrets you know, you are guaranteed to learn something from this book. The simplest of details are not left to chance. Every date on a seemingly random box has a meaning and even the names of merchandise carts or food stands tells a story.
The book is presented in an encyclopedia like format with a pretty comprehensive index. Does the name Bwana Bob's have any sort of meaning? Check it out in the index and find your answer. However, the book is actually readable too. Beginning at the TTC ticket booth the details flow like you are 'reading up Main St.' and then around the Magic Kingdom. The same applies to the other parks as well. As you read you'll be making a mental note of hidden details to check out on your next visit.
This is a nice book for any Disney fan. You're guaranteed to learn something. So much has changed since we went in 2000! I decided to get an updated version because of all the changes (or so I've heard, this is our first family trip.) This book is essential in any form. LOTS of good info for parents, especially if you have preschoolers. It is a smaller book compared to the TUG WDW, but more focused on kids. It condenses some of the WDW hotel info and does not include as many of the reader comments. Fully describes the attractions and shows to help you decide what the kids will like. The Hidden Magic of Walt Disney World: Over 600 Secrets of the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom ReviewI enjoy books about Disney and normally don't judge them harshly.
But people should be warned about this one. In just the first couple dozen pages, there are numerous items that are out of date. It's kind of sad that families will go searching for the old-fashioned phone in the General Store, will go to awaken Tinker Bell in the Fantasyland shop, will go to see Tink in the keyhole of the sewing table there, the wooden leg on the lost and found shelf at the Frontierland station -- when all of these features have been removed over a year ago. In addition to being outdated, the information is sometimes just wrong. For instance, it isn't true that "WDW imagineers could not dig a basement in Orlando as they did at Disneyland in California ..." There are no utilidors in Disneyland. (Walt was frustrated to see a cowboy walking through Tomorrowland on his way to work in Frontierland in Disneyland -- since there was no other way to cross the park. And the idea for the WDW ultidors was born!)
If I can spot things that are wrong, I wonder what a real Disney expert would find. The editing was skethcy, too. For instance, the red and green faces of Cinderella's evil stepsisters are "belying" their anger and jealousy. "Belying" means hiding or contracting. What the author meant was "revealing."
Unfortunately, this book is a regurgitation of all the "WDW Secrets" lists on the Internet. Some of the items on those list aren't legitimate. For instance, the three-circled cut-out shapes in the stone wall that curves along the walkways to the front of the castle - at no time of day do they cast a Mickey-shaped shadow on the ground. I read about this online a couple of years ago and went on many occasions to the castle to see the shadows. I kept coming back to check. I asked castmembers.
