Marlene Dietrich: Life and Legend ReviewHaving read Maria Riva's book on her mother along with Dietrich's own autobiography, I didn't really expect any new revelations from this book -- but I couldn't have been more wrong! Mr. Bach is to be congratulated on his fascinating and respectable work honoring Miss Dietrich and her life. What a remarkable performer and a remarkable human being. We could sure use a few more like her in today's world. This is a must read for fans of the Lady and the Legend!!Marlene Dietrich: Life and Legend Overview

Judy ReviewGerold Frank has taken a subject of innumerable facets, a larger-than-life personality, and an almost indescribable talent and has put the history of her life to words as no writer before or since has been able to accomplish. Judy Garland, one of the silver screen's most beloved stars, is accurately and honestly conveyed in this biography. Frank's style is unique: when he tells of the tradgedies or failures of the star, he is not incriminating against the subject. Frank's book is one as written by an observer, sometimes voyueristically so. His thorough research bring Garland through in all her glory: as the vaudeville headliner, the little girl on the rise to stardom, the MGM superstar, loving wife and mother, and the sometimes self-destructive woman, taken from this earth too soon by the disease brought on by a lifetime of pills, but most of all, the woman trying to find her place in the world and the love she always craved and needed. Judy Garland is a human being, not a media figure, in this book. Gerold Frank is to be well commended for his excellent portrayal of Judy Garland, and readers will also be delighted or surprised by the informative tidbits along this Yellow Brick Road into the life of the great Judy Garland.Judy OverviewBased on over 200 interviews and full access to her personal papers, letters, contracts, and photos, as well as the complete cooperation of her children, husbands, relatives, doctors, fellow actors, and directors, this biography explores with candor and empathy the tempestuous, theatrical life of Judy Garland (1922-1969). Here, in all her glory and turmoil, is the singer-actress whose performances in films like The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St. Louis, A Star Is Born, and on concert tours enthralled audiences, a woman whose brazen and tender voice continues to captivate listeners decades after her death at age forty-seven.

The Bad and the Beautiful: Hollywood in the Fifties ReviewWhat did the lives of the Hollywood glitterati mean to American culture during the 1950's? We don't find out. Lots of anecdotes, most quite familiar, but little sense of historical context. The text is well written and goes down well, but when the book is over we are left with no greater understanding of the 1950's or the movie industry, wondering, what was the point. The Bad and the Beautiful: Hollywood in the Fifties Overview

Liz: An Intimate Biography of Elizabeth Taylor (updated with a new chapter) ReviewI've not seen many Liz Taylor's movies before, but since I read the book, I became highly interested to see her films, just to be able to check what I read in this book with how she performs/appears in a particular movie as mentioned in the book. In the beginning of my reading, the book gives me a mix feeling towards Liz Taylor, more negative than positive. But after I finished reading I really felt for her. In short, the story reveals her complicated life in the most open manner. It tells everything you want to know about Liz Taylor, from birth up to the latest marriage (and divorce). It also exposes her severe addiction to drugs and alcohol which is very shocking. What a life story! I enjoy reading the book because it flows smoothly, it is insightful and it gives detail information for every occassion in the story. It is a great book to read.Liz: An Intimate Biography of Elizabeth Taylor (updated with a new chapter) Overview

Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford ReviewI totally agree with "riverscircus" perfect review. The lady definitely knows her Crawford!
I agree that the photographic elements of this book are absolutely appalling, including the book's cover (I know exactly what website it was snagged from). The photos inside are of ghastly quality, pixilated and blurry. But more important than this, is that most aspects of Crawford's life and career are merely glossed over in a paragraph or two. There simply isn't "enough" in this book. As others have stated, very little is new information in this book, and what IS new, is almost totally irrelevant.
I was wildly excited about this book before it arrived (due to the author's good reputation and because I thought it would bring new insight into the woman known as Joan Crawford), only to discover it was half as long as his book on Marilyn Monroe, who lived half as long as Crawford!
The book reads like thrown-together-facts taken from, at times, dubious sources, and tossed out to the book stores.Possessed: The Life of Joan Crawford Overview
The definitive biography of a remarkable woman and true legend of film

Joan Crawford was one of the most incandescent film stars of all time, yet she may have also been one of the most misunderstood. In this brilliantly researched, thoughtful, and intimate biography, bestselling author Donald Spoto goes beyond the popular caricature-the abusive, unstable mother portrayed in her adopted daughter Christina Crawford's memoir, Mommie Dearest-to give us a three-dimensional portrait of the real woman behind the actress, her dazzling career, and her extraordinary life and times.

Based on new archival information and exclusive interviews, Possessed traces Crawford's fifty years of memorable performances in such film classics as Rain, The Women, Mildred Pierce, and Sudden Fear, which are as startling and vivid today as when they were first released. Spoto goes behind the myths to examine the rise and fall of the studio system; Crawford's four marriages; her passionate, thirty-year on-and-off affair with Clark Gable; her friendships and rivalries with other stars; the truth behind the scathing stories in her daughter's memoir; and more.
