John Huston: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers) ReviewThis is a terrific book. It consists of interviews with John Huston from 1952-85. Not only does the reader find out about Huston's ideas on filmmaking and get some inside info on the making of classic films, but he will find out about the breadth of Huston's interests, which extended beyond filmmaking to art and philosophy. Here, truly, was an intelligent man.
The most interesting thing to me about Huston was that he started in the classic studio age and survived its downfall to make films that were fresh, interesting and important even in the Eighties. These interviews show Huston's mental flexibility. He admires "McCabe and Mrs. Miller," "Rocky," and "Taxi Driver." Huston is also quite frank about his own films. I will never be tempted to see "Roots of Heaven" or "Barbarian and the Geisha." I have to see "Moby Dick," which he considered one of his films that never got its due.
I was sorry when this book ended.John Huston: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers) Overview

Death By Misfortune ReviewI love AM Riley's writing. This latest from her is one gripping and suspenseful romance mystery. I usually like my story to be told from the two main guys' POV and not to wander to a 3rd person. But I absolutely have no such trouble with the no. of characters in Death by Misfortune, because all the characters are so interesting and complex with vital roles in a riveting and tightly paced plot. I also do not like stories with Hollywood glitter and glamor but find myself fascinated with the absorbing drama played out among these Hollywood personalities even as they are immersed in the complex mystery.
As for the romance, we have two complex relationships here. Detective Bill Turner from Amor en Retrogrado has always been one intriguing character and his relationship with Chris has never been easy. Deeply in the closet it is wonderful to see Bill finally able to overcome his inner demons and take little steps forward with Chris.
And then there are the two main characters of the story, Jeremy Reilly and Becket Russel, who are such complex and flawed personalities. Their developing romance is as dramatic and suspenseful as the mystery itself as the younger Jeremy will do anything for his mentor whom he adored, even covering up for Becket for possible murder. But would the older, cynical yet vulnerable Becket, with his Hollywood ambition reciprocate ?
I love the passion and chemistry in these two relationships. And I find myself enjoying the sex scenes which are sharp and filled with tension. And after reading so many M/M romance I really appreciate sex scenes which I do not find myself skipping.
The supporting characters are just as wonderfully developed. I do not go for female roles much in M/M romance but Kate's down to earth personality is a solid presence amidst these vulnerable guys with their relationship problems. As for Leslie, flamboyant and gay and Jeremy's friend, he is a wonderful supporting character providing the laughs.
Back to the mystery, I never guessed the villain and when it was revealed I wonder why I have missed it :).
Death by Misfortune is a well written mystery with a gripping plot but what I like is the complex and flawed characters caught up in the drama and mystery. Jeremy and Becket has their Hollywood closure but I would love to hear more of Bill and Chris.Death By Misfortune OverviewAfter a glamorous studio party, "Psychic to the Stars" Sylvie Black is found murdered in her fortune telling booth, a blood soaked tarot reading spread out before her. Shortly afterwards, the high-profile director who was about to produce Ms. Black's 'tell-all' Hollywood screenplay, is found murdered as well. Closeted Homicide detective, Bill Turner, and his partner, Kate Crandall, find themselves sorting through a cast of likely suspects, who all seem to have secrets worth killing for. They soon run up against the studio rumor mill, and Jeremy Reilly, a young studio AD determined to protect their prime suspect. The characters in this book also appear in Am Riley's Amor en Retrogrado.

Stay Tuned for Murder: A Talk Radio Mystery Review"Stay Tuned for Murder" is Mary Kennedy's third Talk Radio Mystery novel featuring radio talk show psychologist Maggie Walsh. When the series began, Maggie had just left her clinical psychology practice in New York to host a show at WYME radio in a small town in southern Florida. Although there are prior books in this series, this installment provides enough basic information about the main characters to catch up new readers.
"Stay Tuned for Murder" begins with Maggie hosting her radio show along with guest Chantel Carrington, a flamboyant psychic who claims she can communicate with the dead. While Maggie doesn't trust Chantel, she agrees to attend a séance Chantel is holding at the local historical society. During the gathering, Chantel warns everyone they are in grave danger from an evil presence. The next day, one of those attendees is murdered in her own home. Is this just a coincidence or is there more to Chantel's self-proclaimed status of medium and oracle than it appears? Maggie is determined to find out more about the murder and about the mysterious "Madame Chantel."
Author Mary Kennedy has a clinical psychology practice, and her experience gives credibility to the character of Maggie. Maggie occasionally references psychological theories that help her in her detecting. This makes the book and the entire series unique.
One downside to the book is the lack of involvement of Maggie's mother Lola and Maggie's housemate Lark. While they make several appearances, they aren't involved in the main plot past the first few chapters. Maggie's on-again/off-again boyfriend and police detective Rafe Martino also appears, but the two are definitely in the "off" stage of their relationship. While they do compare notes on their separate investigations, they don't spend much time together throughout most of the book.
Luckily, Maggie's producer and friend Vera Mae have a major role in helping Maggie investigate. The friendship and working relationship between Maggie and Vera Mae is my favorite thing about the book. Vera Mae is a funny, no-nonsense woman who knows the radio business and shares that knowledge with Maggie. Maggie reciprocates this friendship and at one point in the story, rushes to Vera's side when Vera is in need of a friend. It's refreshing to see two strong female characters friendly and supportive of each other. Their camaraderie reminds me of Emma Lord and Vida Runkel in Mary Daheim's Alpine series.
I like the conversational style the author uses when Maggie is narrating. Maggie sometimes directs her comments to the reader and this technique works well with the light, humorous tone of the book. This light tone is enhanced by several references to current pop culture, such as actors Simon Baker, Robert Pattinson, and television shows "CSI Miami" and "Law and Order." These examples seem natural and don't feel forced.
The book starts out very exciting with Chantel's guest appearance on Maggie's show and then the séance. However, the book ends up taking another direction and the story loses some steam as the suspect list and possible motives grow. I would have liked to see more focus on Chantel's psychic talents, whether real or fake, in action.
I am a fan of this series, and loved the debut novel Dead Air: A Talk Radio Mystery. Although I didn't enjoy "Stay Tuned for Murder" quite as much, it's still an entertaining novel. I would be happy to spend more time with these characters in future books.
This review was originally written for the "Season for Romance" E-Zine. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.Stay Tuned for Murder: A Talk Radio Mystery OverviewMaggie's radio show has been getting a boost in ratings ever since Madame Chantal, who claims to talk to dead people, started her regular guest appearance. But when two women are killed after a séance, it's up to Maggie to catch the culprit before she winds up on the other side...

Watch Me Die ReviewI bought this book because it was recommended by Amazon when I purchased an Andrew Vachss novel. The cover looked kind of cheesy, like an old Mickey Spillane paperback, but once I started into it, this book was unlike any other mystery I've ever read. The main character was incredibly refreshing. He is not a "hard boiled" detective- He's just a regular guy. In fact, I felt like I could identify with him in many ways. That was the appeal. Unlike Batman, whom I like because he represents what a human in peak form could accomplish to solve crimes, the main character of this novel is able to proceed through the mystery without any advanced training or skills of any kind. As a bonus, though, he's incredibly humorous and self-deprecating as he makes his way through the plot. If you enjoy Elmore Leonard, Lawrence Bloch or would just like to read a mystery that's a great variation on the standard genre, I highly recommend this book!Watch Me Die Overview

Mommy's Little Girl: Casey Anthony and her Daughter Caylee's Tragic Fate ReviewI don't know where all of these people are getting their ratings from. Did we read the same book? The only possible reason this book could be a "best seller" is because of how notorious the case is. I have been following this case very closely, and am a huge true crime reader. I am also just an avid reader. This book was simply all of the information I had already read on the internet mashed together. Nothing new, no surprises no insight. I found it tedious to read page after page of law enforcement interviews verbatim--easily accessible from docstoc.com. There was little if any author input or insight and any insight or input given was delivered strangely and in a strange word order that had me re-reading sentences to make sure I understood. In addition to this the author's sentences were very clipped and short. There was no flow, no eloquence, no suspense. It is truly one of the worst books I've read, and it is a shame because I so looked forward to it--in fact, I followed the case so closely, I COULD HAVE WRITTEN IT BETTER! I'm sorry, but I feel like I wasted $7.00. In all fairness, perhaps my distaste for the book was in part due to my knowledge of the case. Maybe those who have no knowledge might enjoy the book. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you want the "cliff notes" to the case, this is the book for you.Mommy's Little Girl: Casey Anthony and her Daughter Caylee's Tragic Fate OverviewWhen news broke of three-year-old Caylee Anthony's disappearance from her home in Florida in July 2008, there was a huge outpouring of sympathy across the nation. The search for Caylee made front-page headlines. But there was one huge question mark hanging over the case: the girl's mother. As the investigation continued and suspicions mounted, Casey became the prime suspect. In October, based on new evidence against Casey—her erratic behavior and lies, her car that showed signs of human decomposition—a grand jury indicted the young single mother. Then, two months later, police found Caylee's remains a quarter of a mile away from the Anthony home. Casey pled not guilty to charges of murder in the first degree, and she continues to protest her innocence. Did she or didn't she kill Caylee? This is the story of one of the most shocking, confusing, and horrific crimes in modern American history.
