How To Be A Happy Lesbian: A Coming Out Guide ReviewThis is a book I wish I'd had many years ago, my transition into being "out" would have been much easier, less confusing. I would have spent less time feeling as though I was fumbling around in the dark. So many things I needed to know, and many things that it never occurred to me to ask (but I TRULY needed to know), are included in this book. It is so easy to read, fun actually. The tone is kind, as though you were in the room with dear friends, or the big sister we all dream of having!
Please know that this book is NOT just for young women. I spent 20 years being a wife, trying to be who I had been told I was, so it was in middle age that I decided to live an authentic life and this book made that transition less painful, more joyful.
Thank you Tracey & Katherine! How To Be A Happy Lesbian: A Coming Out Guide OverviewThis guide is obviously written from the heart. The tone is gentle and supportive, a big sister encouraging other lesbians to love and accept themselves and live a full life, free of fear and shame. This is a much-needed book, one the authors wish had been available when they were younger and needed advice on how to "make it" in a predominantly homophobic world. It's not preachy, clinical, or cynical. It's readable, humorous, and, most important, kind. Plus, it's chock full of useful information and resources.

Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Text-Reader ReviewAn excellent reader explaining the media's role in perpetrating common stereotypes of historically marginalized people. Includes analysis of advertising, sexual representation, TV and music. An excellent textbook for cultural studies.Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Text-Reader Overview
Incisive analyses of mass media - including such forms as talk shows, MTV, the internet, soap operas, television sitcoms, dramatic series, pornography, and advertising-enable this provocative new edition of Gender, Race and Class in Media to engage students in critical mass media scholarship. Issues of power related to gender, race, and class are integrated into a wide range of articles examining the economic and cultural implications of mass media as institutions, including the political economy of media production, textual analysis, and media consumption.

Ten new, original essays are included in this text, along with compelling previously published articles and book chapters by both established media scholars and new voices in the field. Together with new section introductions by Gail Dines and Jean Humez, the readings provide a solid yet accessible critical introduction to mass media studies.

Features:

Authority. Original essays and important reprinted articles from renowned scholars comprise this comprehensive and diverse volume
Accessibility. Work in cultural studies and queer theory is made accessible to undergraduate students
Activist Philosophy. Extensive bibliography and media resources encourage conscientious activism.
Integrated analysis. Race is examined throughout the text rather than treated in a separate chapter.

New to the Second Edition:

Expanded coverage of "queer" representations in mass media
New section introductions provide readers with a guide for each section
New section on the violence debates and a new section on the Internet
Two sections devoted to consumerism, marketing, and advertising

Recommended for courses in mass media, feminist theory, race, class, and gender, and social theory in the Sociology, Communication, and Women's Studies disciplines. Also recommended as a general reference title for scholars and anyone interested in the representation of race, class, and gender in the media.
