The Flash Gordon Serials, 1936-1940: A Heavily Illustrated Guide ReviewI absolutely loved this book. It is loaded with great pictures and behind-the-scenes stories that explained a whole lot for me. When I was younger watching these serials, there was a lot of disjointed scenes as well as inconsistent names of people and places. I was amused to learn that my confusion was the result of how tightly-budgeted these movies were and how Universal severely-cut corners. If the actors blew their lines, someone redubbed their voices or let the blooper stand. Footage from old silent movies was frequently used for some action sequences. The musical soundtracks of all three serials were taken from many other Universal productions, yet have become so familiar to fans that we believed it was created primarily for Flash Gordon. There's a lot of great humor, too. (There was a scene in "Trip to Mars" where Prince Barin and Zarkov are up on a roof trying to break through a skylight to save Flash, and after frantically searching for something useful, Barin reaches off camera and produces a handy crowbar to do the job!) If you ever enjoyed these movies, I highly recommend this book to you.The Flash Gordon Serials, 1936-1940: A Heavily Illustrated Guide OverviewFlash Gordon, Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars and Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, the most expensive and popular movie serials ever made, have been favorites of movie and comic fans for decades. The first serial was even designated a cultural treasure after being selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1996. This is the first book-length guide to the serials. Arranged in a chapter-by-chapter format conforming to the structure of the three original films, the work provides full cast and crew information, plot synopses, and production notes for each film. The work also includes a wealth of background information on the films and more than 150 photographs, along with interview quotations from cast members Buster Crabbe, Jean Rogers, and Caroll Borland. Three appendices provide an overview of the serial film Buck Rogers (1939), select filmographies for 50 of the most prominent Flash Gordon cast and crew members, a complete list of the serials' film and television remakes.

John Landis ReviewI was delighted to discover that the first book I've ever seen on legendary director John Landis was not only informative but really funny! Profusely illustrated, this book is really made up of long interviews with Landis and his collaborators including Dan Aykroyd, Elmer Bernstein, Harold Ramis, Chris Miller, Jamie Lee Curtis, B.B. King and many others. There are also essays about Landis movies by such fantastic filmmakers as David Cronenberg, Guillermo Del Toro, Sam Raimi, Frank Oz, Costa Gavras and many others. And articles by film critics Christopher Frayling, Dave Kehr, Bill Khron, and more. Even an interview that Landis did with Jack Arnold for CAHIERS DU CINEMA in the eighties. And I was amazed to find it so up to date it talks about Landis most recent documentary (which aired on HBO in December) MR. WARMTH, THE DON RICKLES PROJECT. An extremely well produced book with tons of photos and illustrations, most of which I had never seen before. A truly great surprise and one of the best movie related books I've ever bought.John Landis OverviewJOHN LANDIS, by film historian and journalist Giulia D'Agnolo Vallan, is the first American book published about the legendary filmmaker. Using an in-depth interview with Landis, as well as original interviews with and essays by his collaborators, colleagues and film critics, the book examines the life and career of the man who gave us such classic films as THE KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE, NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE, THE BLUES BROTHERS, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, TRADING PLACES, COMING TO AMERICA, THE THREE AMIGOS, and the ground breaking MICHAEL JACKSON'S THRILLER among many others. Contributors include Guillermo Del Toro, David Cronenberg, Frank Oz, Sam Raimi, Costa Gavras, B.B. King, Dan Aykroyd, Aaron McGruder, Elmer Bernstein, Rick Baker, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Frayling, Harold Ramis, and many more. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, production and ad art, many never before published from Mr. Landis's personal collection. Whether you know him for his award winning documentaries, SLASHER, and the recent MR. WARMTH, THE DON RICKLES PROJECT, or his comedies, musicals or horror films, JOHN LANDIS is a fascinating look at the man responsible for many of our pop culture icons. It is available now for the 25th Anniversary of MICHAEL JACKSON'S THRILLER. Giulia D'Agnolo Vallan is an Italian film journalist and curator. She was the director of the Torino Film Festival between 2003 AND 2006 and has also been the US correspondent for the Venice Film Festival. In Italy she has published books on John Carpenter, George Romero, Walter Hill, Clint Eastwood, William Friedkin, John Milius and Robert Aldrich. This is her first English language book.

You Couldn't Ignore Me If You Tried: The Brat Pack, John Hughes, and Their Impact on a Generation ReviewOther reivews of this book convinced me to buy it and they're very on target. It's not full or pictures and the interviews prove that hindsight is 20/20, but there is a gossip-feel to it. It's not a serious film text and it's not People magazine but somewhere in between. For someone like me who saw the films a million times it's interesting to hear about how the characters were formed and the filming and how it all came together. A really enjoyable read and each chapter stands on its own.You Couldn't Ignore Me If You Tried: The Brat Pack, John Hughes, and Their Impact on a Generation Overview

U-571 ReviewThis is a superb story about submarine warfare in the Atlantic in WWII. The plot contains one of the most imaginative twists that makes this story so unique. We follow the American crew as they are trapped by fate. The action is excellent and the characters bring the story to life.U-571 Overview Hell is Under WaterTheir mission was a audacious and daring as it was dangerous. A crew of American sailors in a disguised submarine would rendezvous with U-571--a crippled German U-boat in enemy waters--storm aboard, and capture one of the Nazis' coveted Enigma encryption machines, a device that would allow the Allies to decode secret German transmissions. The planning was meticulous. The secrecy was airtight. Every eventuality was prepared for. Except one. Now, with their own sub lying in pieces on the Atlantic floor, an unseasoned young U.S. naval officer and a handful of his men are trapped in a limping enemy boat trying to make its way across a thousand square-mile killing zone. Suddenly they are the hunted prey of the Reich's killer ships, and the target of Allied bombers. They have a prize in their possession that can turn the tide of the savage global conflict once and for all. And they have nowhere to run. While on a secret mission targeting the Nazi "Enigma" encryption device, a team of American sailors and marines poses as the German rescue team for a crippled submarine. But before they can grab the device and escape, the real rescue unit arrives and destroys their American vessel. Now they are forced to secretly navigate the malfunctioning submarine through enemy lines. This Dino De Laurentiis production is written and directed by Jonathan Mostow (Breakdown), and stars Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel and Jon Bon Jovi.
