Spaghetti Westerns: Cowboys and Europeans from Karl May to Sergio Leone (Cinema and Society) ReviewI have very incidentally came across to this book when there was no internet, or any of these technological virtual capabilities. It was the spring of 1986, when a friend of mine called me up and said "there's something I saw in the bookshop at the film theatre, which is just for you. You must not miss it". It was the Istanbul Film Festival days, and the `thing' I must not miss was a book, called `Spaghetti Westerns - Cowboys and Europeans from Karl May to Sergio Leone' by Christopher Frayling. I went and saw the book on the shelf. I was stunned when I turned the cover page to see what's inside. There it was a two page wide picture of Lee Van Cleef, in `Colonel Mortimer' costumes. That famous artistic Van Cleef pose, looking out deadly with his Angel Eyes, waiting for Indio for `La Resa Dei Conti'. As soon as I saw that picture, even without reading the book, I said to myself this guy must have the same feelings as I have towards Leone's movies. Eversince then I have been reading that huge 284 pages book with full of interesting details and analysis. Every time I read it, I feel as if I am learning new things. I still refer that book quite often. He has also done television documentaries on Leone and Morricone for BBC. Christopher Frayling is very well known academician in the UK. He is the rector and the provost of famous Royal College of Art in London. I personally had the chance to meet with him, and had in-depth interviews on Sergio Leone. . There's no doubt that he is one of the most knowledgable people on Leone. He has also just finished a bulky book on Sergio Leone's biography. He is planning the release around the fall of 98. He has years of deep experience about the Spaghetti Western genre. This book is the second edition to the first one, and a "must have" for all spaghetti western genre with lots of interesting details, profound analysis, and stills. I believe that it satisfies both theoratical scholars as well as film buffs. It is a book that sc! ientifically, and emotionally justifies the quality of Spaghetti Western film genre, which has been humilitated and overlooked by many film critics as ersatz film genre. Get the book, read it, read it once more, and then evaluate the genre afterwards. A lot of vista is waiting for those who hadn't read it yet. The book also contains details on the cut scenes of Leone's westerns, as well as their box office revenues. The section I must enjoy is the one on the influence of Spaghetti Westerns on American Western films. And, a last recommendation is: reserve one of the best spots of your library, which can be easily accessable for your future references. Get this book quickly, and wait for the soon-to-be-published "la grande finale": "SOMETHING TO DO WITH DEATH - The Life and Films of Sergio Leone"
VIVA LEONE !! VIVA FRAYLING!!!Spaghetti Westerns: Cowboys and Europeans from Karl May to Sergio Leone (Cinema and Society) OverviewSpaghetti Westerns is the major critical exploration of the European Western. Christopher Frayling approaches the Westerns produced at Cinecitta Studios in Rome from a variety of perspectives, placing them in the Italian, social, political, industrial and cinematic contexts from which they evolved. Over 400 Spaghetti Westerns were produced during their 1960s peak period; Frayling deals with the most interesting examples, giving special attention to the films of Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood.

Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits ReviewA lot of music fans would really love a good biography on Tom Waits, and the author Barney Hoskyns lets this desire overrun the question of whether or not he has the information for a decent biography.
Now, let's get to the problem with this book; Waits has no desire to play along with an unauthorized biographhy, and has requested that his friends honor his wishes to not play along. Hoskyns never forgives Waits for this.
Now, personally, I can see Waits's issue here. Hoskyns however makes a pretty big fuss over Waits excluding friends from his inner circle who don't honor his wishes to keep his private life private. Now this may sound cold, but two things; one, however cold it may sound, Waits is a grownup, his friends are grownups; there's never any evidence or even suggestion that Waits has treated people in any sort of dishonest, criminal or abusive way. Two, personall, I'm a private person if somebody was writing an unauthorized biography (I am in no way claiming to have done anything worth making me famous, or that anyone would be interested in my private life this is conjecture) yes, I would ask that my friends not blabber about my private life, and if they did anyway, I would be quite hurt.
I would love to know some of the stuff Hoskyns wants to know about. I would love to read interviews from the sidemen to get an inside story about the recordings of some of my favorite music, but again, Waits and his friends are grownups; if Waits would prefer that much for stories of his behind the scenes times get spread around, that's his time.
On that note, Hoskyns also conjectures quite a bit about Wait's marriage to Kathleen Brennan, suggesting that she's holding a Yoko-Ono type influence on his life, alienating his friends and affecting his work. We're not talking bout The Beatles here though, where there's a band to disrupt. The albums are issued under one person's name. A Tom Waits album is whatever Tom Waits says it is. If he says that a Waits album is with Kathleen Brennan over the old guys, than that's a Tom Waits album.
The great fault with this book, and as the book goes on Hoskyns seems to be apologizing for it and trying to excuse himself for it is that he signed on to do a book without accepting that he was never going to have access to the information that he wanted. As the book goes on, Hoskyns resorts to stacking up snarky asides against Tom, writing reviews of the later records and recycling stories from David Letterman interviews. Hoskyns's personal offence at Tom's love of privacy even manifests itself in an appendix where the author includes e-mails from Waits acquaintances refusing interviews.
Even if you utterly disagree with my view that Waits is justified in asking his friends not to play along with this project, and you feel that the author is absolutely justified in his disenchantment with Waits, it's hard to deny that the author's lack of necessary information substantially wrecks the latter half of the book.
Hoskyns isn't a terrible writer though, and while I can't recommend buying this book, Tom Waits fanatics will find this worth checking out for some entertaining chapters on the earlier portion of Waits's career and the construction of the drunken jazzbo mythos still follows him around.Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits Overview

Frommer's Florida 2008 (Frommer's Complete) ReviewI know some people criticize Frommer's for being "negative," but to me, they're just doing their job--alerting you about the good and bad of travel destinations, and EVERY one of them has some bad. I don't think it's "negative" to mention that if you visit certain areas of a particular city after dark you should use the lighted, public parking lots instead of parking on the streets because of problems with break-ins and muggings. That's simply fulfilling their responsibility to their readers.
At any rate, I bought this guide in preparation for a trip to Tampa. I had no idea how much there was to do in that part of Florida until I started looking through this guide. It steered us to the Big Cat Rescue facility (NOT to be missed if you love wild cats), the free manatee viewing by the TECO plant and the car museum in Sarasota to name a few. Also got some great restaurant ideas and general information about the area.Frommer's Florida 2008 (Frommer's Complete) OverviewYou'll never fall into the tourist traps when you travel with Frommer's. It's like having a friend show you around, taking you to the places locals like best. No other series offers candid reviews of so many hotels and restaurants in all price ranges. Every Frommer's Travel Guide is up-to-date, with exact prices for everything, dozens of color maps, and exciting coverage of sports, shopping, and nightlife. You'd be lost without us!
Completely updated every year (unlike most of the competition), Frommer's Florida is much more comprehensive and detailed than its major competitor. It is simply the most reliable guide you can buy. Our author has inspected countless accommodations and selected the very best: lavish golf resorts, spas, stunning B&Bs, beachfront motels, and family-friendly condos. Making It Big: The Diary of a Broadway Musical ReviewThe cost of Broadway musicals in the 1990s was so astronomical that when shows succeeded, they succeeded big. And when they flopped, they flopped even harder. Big was one of the latter. And, though this book often feels like it wants to paint the opposite picture, from the trials and tribulations it covers, when you've finished it, you know why it's failed. Most of the book is wonderfully informative and well-written, but the show's lingering death is glossed over in a very ineffective epilogue, and its post-Broadway life is not even discussed at all. If you are at all interested in how Broadway musicals are conceived of and produced, you shouldn't miss this book.Making It Big: The Diary of a Broadway Musical Overview

Wildlife Film-making: Looking to the Future ReviewI knew Piers Warren was creating this book because he had asked me to contribute an essay to it. What I didn't realize until I got a copy and read it was the wealth of information and wisdom in it. If you are interested in wildlife films or connected with the wildlife filmmaking industry in any way, this is a book which will fascinate you and I urge you to read and relish it.

Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies ReviewI thought that Jason Surrell's book about the Haunted Mansion was great, and this book is just as wonderful. Read about the original idea proposed for the 'walk-thru' version of the Pirates of The Caribbean ride, go through each scene of the actual ride and find out the differences between the California, Florida, Japan and Paris rides. There are many photos and illustrations throughout the book (some of which I've never seen before). The book ends with a section on the movie and points out certain scenes taken from the ride. Overall, this book is worth every penny! I am looking forward to Jason Surrell's upcoming book on the Disney Mountains (Space, Thunder & Splash)Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies OverviewPirates of the Caribbean is one of the most popular and beloved attractions in Disney theme park history, and can be found in each Magic Kingdom Park around the globe. Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies will illustrate how the scalawags and buccaneers made the voyage from sketches to reality, evolving from early story concepts to adaptations and changes as it moved into each of the parks around the four corners of the world, to the very latest ideas for show enhancement.

Kenneth Strickfaden, Dr. Frankenstein's Electrician ReviewAs a sci-fi buff growing up and watching those sci-fi movies I always wondered where those awesome special electrical effects came from. In those days special effects (FX) were not computer generated but in fact done live. This book answers the question of where these electrical FX came from. A compelling as well as fascinating read, making you want to revisit those films again and head to the rental store just to see those FX once again.Kenneth Strickfaden, Dr. Frankenstein's Electrician OverviewKenneth Strickfaden, innovative genius of illusionary special effects from silent films to the age of television, set the standard for Hollywood's mad scientists. Strickfaden created the science fiction apparatus in more than 100 motion picture films and television programs, from 1931's Frankenstein to the Wizard of Oz and The Mask of Fu Manchu to television's The Munsters. The skilled technician, known around Hollywood's back lots as "Mr. Electric," once doubled for Boris Karloff in a dangerous scene and was nearly electrocuted. From his birth in 1896 to his death in 1984, Strickfaden's life was filled with adventure. He spent his early years working the amusement parks on both coasts, served overseas as a Marine during World War I, took a 1919 cross-country trip in a dilapidated Model T, and favored risky pursuits like automobile and speedboat racing. He worked as an aeronautical mechanic, constructing airplanes for an historic around-the-world flight. A science teacher at heart, he gave 1,500 traveling science demonstration lectures across the U.S. and Canada. Besides covering Strickfaden's entire personal and professional life, this book discusses how later films show his influence. It reveals the fate of his collection of equipment, and is richly illustrated with numerous rare and previously unpublished photographs. Appendices provide a selection of notes, doodles, and scribbles from Strickfaden's notebooks, informal sketches, correspondence, documents, a chronology of his film and television contributions, a bibliography, a film index, and a complete subject index.
